Plant Hijackers, Gall Aphids

- In this video we crack open some strange looking structures growing on a poplar tree. These structures are actually called galls. Inside of them are found colonies of aphids that I believe are petiole gall aphids. These insects feed from the inside and reproduce by manipulating the plant to create a home for them. Once they emerge they move to mustard plants like cabbage, broccoli, kale or more to feed on the roots. The damage caused by these insects is not much more than aesthetic. Discussion on how to manage and deal with these is discussed. We also discuss the life cycle of these insects.

@@InsectHunter hello.i need help. 2 days ago my female argiope lobata orb weaver spider died from old age. can you tell me ways to preserve her please.(do remember the vid that you show old specimens? the garden spider that you showed is a female argiope lobata orb weaver spider)
Love what you do IH.
Your channel will be big someday soon. Great content
Ha ha I am all about big adventures in the small world of insects! Thanks for taking time to comment.
Thank you ffor interesting story! Good luck!
Pretty cool, never seen before!
Love your imagination bro! Very fascinating stuff too!
Thank you! Cheers!
Woah! That's neat!
Love ur channel bro
5:50 i thought he was going to say waste, but he swore like a sailor.... exoskeletons. Oh shed, like shed it's outer layer. That gap was well timed 🤣
ha ha I haven't sworn in a long time.
I try to maintain a positive attitude towards insects (not hard since I love most of them and find them fascinating) and all life in general, so i hate to admit my gut reaction to these was disgust at first, hasn’t happened with an insect I didn’t really know in a long time, but i guess the gall thing made me uncharacteristically squeamish! After finishing the video I came around though, they’re pretty cool, and they even provide food and shelter to other animals! Proof that all life is intrinsically connected and no animal is insignificant to the chain, even the humble aphid deserves recognition.
That’s really cool. They make tiny homes😂
Tiny cancer homes.
-_-
Great video!!! I see this and think- what a great food item for my micro geckos. But, I would never want to introduce to my facility as the possibility of them getting on other plants would be pretty high. Phu-Phussler!
Yeah they are really small and packed with protein and sugars.
@@InsectHunter Thanks for sharing.
Just found your channel 😁 enjoy your style and humor very interesting 🤔 thanks for your channel i enjoy learning new things and your channel well be a good place to start
Hey welcome back!
Bannana God what do you mean?
Insect Hunter Well your last video was 4 weeks ago so that’s why I said “Welcome back!”
Bannana God yeah my current posting schedule is once per month. Ever since I had my twins life has been super busy!
Trying to find a solution for the constant rain of sticky brown matter, I found these galls on the leaves of my cotton wood tree, there were no aphids under the leaves, I decided to open a gall to see what was inside and like an anomyly of physics alluding to schrödinger, I found death and life at the same time, dead aphids all over the place and in its splendor a soft green almost transparent of its executioner. What insect is this larva?
Imagine somebody just smacking you with branch full of these things.
I believe the species is Pemphigus spyrothecae
Hey what is your opinion on preserving insects in resin/epoxy? Is it a good way to keep them? Do you have any insects in resin?
Bannana God I think this is a good way but I haven’t had time to work with the resin chemicals yet .looking into it though.
I opened one and a bunch of tiny red bugs came out!
Having a masters degree in plant production, I always thought these cancerous growths were super interesting, regarding the phytohormones involved in this process...^^
Is everyone ignoring the fact you destroyed the lil spiders house 😢😢😢
4:00 lol it does
That’s one of the most interesting insects I’ve ever seen! Great video!
Landon Ellison yes they are awesome!
Is your name van
Praise the Almighty God for creating such amazing creature
Yes they are truly fascinating!
White powder
i find little worms in the ones around here
ClogNog interesting! Could have been parasitic wasps, midges or something else.
@@InsectHunter i haven't seen any aphids in them though, only worms in galls on leafs.
Do you work at University of Idaho?
Yes I do!
That’s awesome man I’m from the Moscow/ Lewiston area!
I’m at 6:34 at the time of writing this comment. Do these aphids hurt the plant life they manipulate?
Only minimally. Obviously they will lose some efficiency, but most trees/plants produce way more than enough leaves to sustain themselves and lose some to pests.
Insect Hunter cool, thanks for the reply!
Do some of them do it in pears?
Maybe they are what's killing the tree...
Silver Fox I am not sure but many plants are parasitized by insects in this way we just don’t know about them because we don’t usually look close enough. If you have any pictures send to my email theinsecthunter@gmail.com
I think you could have done without destroying the "nice little earwig home"
That's what that is lol
Good source of protein
NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Eggs V2
Apparently most galls are supposed to be extremely bitter to deter predators, so good luck with that.
Thats gross
Anthrax
Ha ha yeah that would be really scary if it was.
I hate aphids they killed 1 of my plants
4:04 I guess you could call them *_Aphid readers_*
