  • Masked hunter bugs are true bugs that are said to have an extremely painful bite. These insects are very unique in that they use debris around them to become a camouflage master. In this episode I find some of these awesome insects and handle them with my bare hands. Do I get bitten on accident while handling these? Only way to find out is to watch this episode.

      I found one also, happy with it because it kills unwanted bugs but when I read up about the bite, I put him in a 5 star resort with a meal worm ever once in a while since I am in northern Ontario and I def have to wait till spring to release him. I just hope this nymph stage last long because I love all the debris he walks around with him but sadly when they are adults they are just a plain (longer than round) black beetle and no more cute camo from surrounding debris.

      @@InsectHunter Yep. My neighbor had an infestation that 'magically resolved itself' without the use of pesticides (there are COPD sufferers in my building)... though we were then plagued with all the adults suddenly popping up (they're largish and black) for a while. I say plagued, but I think I saw like, maybe 4 of them total. When the pest control guy saw them he was just 'Oh.. that explains it.. you'll have these for a while, until they starve. Don't bother them, they bite', and that was it. That was 3 years ago now, i think? No re-infestation, and no bites from the hunters, that i heard about anyway.

    I was bit by one last year in my daughter’s bed. Left quite the welt and burned like a wasp sting for a few days. This one is a juvenile. I just found one the other day in the pool cover. Looked like a sand covered big. The one that bit me was an adult. It got trapped in my shirt and I sent it flying when I saw it 😂

    Back in 2010-2011, I went through a similar situation involving 'Wheel bugs', which are one of the few assassin bug species native to the mid Atlantic region of the US. I had never seen one before, but I started seeing them out in a semi-rural area of Pa where I lived for 2.5 years. I didn't know what they were until about a year after I moved back to Delaware, and stopped seeing them again. Anyway, I had seen the adult wheel bugs in late summer and fall of 2010. They were occasionally seen hanging out on the deck, or on trees.
    The following spring, I saw a strange new bug that ended up being baby wheel bugs. They looked almost entirely different as juveniles. I coaxed quite a few adult wheel bugs onto my hands in 2010, but later learned that their bite is apparently considered one of the most painful insect bites out there. Fortunately I handled them like I handle any insect or small animal, so i was never bit. I never technically "pick up" any insect or animal. I slowly and carefully coax them into walking onto my hand on their own. So there's no reason for them to bite me. Now that I know what they are, I have considered driving back out to that particular area of southeastern PA, and capturing a few wheel bugs and bringing them here.

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  5 років тому +3

      Yeah I haven't received much harm myself doing like you do. Slowly coaxing insects works well. Just stay calm and the bugs will stay calm too.

    Haha, I used to breed pythons. In my experience, their bite is less painful than most insects, such as horseflies and wasps. Funny that the entomologist used them as a comparison. Unless a snake is venomous, their bite is generally more shocking than it is painful.

    That’s a species of Assassin Bug, or as commonly known, The Kissing Bug. The most dangerous part about them isn’t their venom or their bite. The most dangers part about them is the possible deadly parasite they carry within their proboscis called Chagras Disease. When you’re sleep, select species of these bugs actually suck the blood from your lips, and in turn their saliva could very well contain the Chagras Disease which is an old world parasite yet extremely deadly. Assassin Bugs are so terrible that they actually prey on Spiders. These are not to be trifled with.

    I just got stung by one of these mofo's!! It was flying around outside and landed on my shirt.. (Without me knowing till it was flying around my bedroom) SO I go to pick it up cause it landed on my pillow on my bed. My son 6 year old son was freaking out thinking it was hurt him.. I'm telling him.. no, no it's just a lightening bug.. WRONG! I went to pick it up.. thinking it was harmless.. I SCREAMED OUT LOUD WHEN IT BIT ME!! WORSE THAT A HORNETS STING.. It happened like 20 mins ago and its. still throbbing!! So when I finally found it again I stepped on it and took a photo of it with the scanner app on my phone and it pulled up masked hunter.. I'm so glad it got me and not my son😳❗

    Hi insect hunter. I can see this is an assassin bug. I recently woke up after a mid morning nap that lastes about 45 minutes to discover my upper lip swollen and numb. Then, upon closer look, I could see that at the center of the marble sized swollen part of lip there were two small, evenly spaced holes or bite marks and a round ball of dark sticky matter close to the wound. I removed this small ball for saving and to make sure that it wouldnt actually contact the damaged part of the lip. The swelling went away after about a week and the numbness diminished after about 4 or 5 days. I experienced no pain at any point. I live in NJ. Can you pleass give me your thoughts on what could have bitten me. I saw several spiders , a house centipede, and a stink bug in the days following. Thanks and a reply will guarantee a new subscriber

    • @InsectHunter

      A lot of it really depends on what area you are living in. Is the area you live in an area that is hot and humid? If not you may have to travel to another location to get some very large beetles. If you live in the U.S. I would try and see if you can contact a local university and ask for the insect systematist. They are experts curating pinned insects and collections. They might know more about what kinds of larger beetles in your area you might be able to collect or trap.

      The dirt is strongly adhered through an almost biological glue making it very difficult to remove, plus you don't want to get bitten. So it would be difficult to clean them off.

      they are in the same family as assassin bugs, but the common name for the species itself is a masked hunter bug.
