The weight on the end of the string is the anti-skate weight. It uses gravity to apply a small counter-force to the tonearm's natural inclination to skip towards the record centre. It basically helps keep the needle in the groove.
Pro-ject essential arrived! $250 shipped. I was slightly let down because I assumed the finish would be a high-gloss. Instead it is a flat white. It is still very nice and has such an appealing look! Once I got it set up and running the sound quality was much improved than my previous turntable. Great sound, great look, great product from pro-ject!

Hi, thanks very much for the video. I just got a Project Debut Carbon for my office and this video was perfect for illustrating and amplifying (no pun intended) the Owner's Instructions. Thanks for reducing my stress!
Thanks for the tutorial! It was applicable to the Argon TT-2 as well. Much better explained than the user manual that came with it. Especially the part explaining the anti-skate
I've read the manual and looked at this video and still can't get the correct position on the tune arm. And it'a an Argon TT-2. I tired for one hour now and it doesn't, totally useless in my point of view.
You initially move the counterweight so the arm is completely balanced. When this is done, you need to apply downforce. If you don't apply downforce at this stage the needle will not sit properly in a groove - it will constantly skip. So the process is level the arm, then apply downforce by rotating the whole weight forward to the required point on the scale. Also, if you don't start from a balanced position you cannot be sure what weight you are applying. Hope this helps!
@@larrybranchii Once the arm is balance you need to 'zero' the dial, by twisting just the numbered ring until the zero sits in the 12 o'clock position. Once this is done, you rotate the full counterweight to read so the desired downforce is at 12 o'clock. It's a fiddly process!
It looks like you're turning the numbered wheel only when setting the downforce ( I know you're not though).I got confused (not by this vid.but my lack of concentration lol.)It took me three attempts as I was undoing the balance! Hi. I just got a debut carbon (for my 40th birthday...). I broke the nylon cord of the antiskating weight when I opened it. Do you think I can use the cord with a new knot (shorter length) or should I look for a replacement ? Thanks for your answer, Gaël
It's best to replace it. If it's too short, it can restrict the tonearm's movement when you get near to the end of a record. I hope you enjoy your turntable!
I didn't know better and accidentally removed the cord when unpackaging. It honestly sounds great without it, but I ordered another from amazon for 16 bucks and installed it anyway.
***** Anti-skate weights are one of those little things you don't really think you need until it's proved that you do. The system will work mostly fine without it (slight channel bias to the inner groove wall) but you may one day find your record skating and doing some serious damage to your record. I always err on the side of caution :)
i have a problem with my debut carbon's anti-skating weight thread: when coming at the end of the record, it starts to rub against the anti-skating hanging hoop (clearly visible from 2:09 & onwards). it scrubs so much that the scrubbing noise is audible, the only solution so far was to remove the antiskate weight. is there a way to solve this?
This is a strange one we've not encountered before. I would recommend sending an email to your local distributor for help as you may need a new weight or support hoop.
raoulduke881 It is possible that the hoop has been moved to a wrong position. But we would recommend you visit your local retailer or contact your local distributor to be sure.
as a matter of fact, it was moved and now i can't find its right position. now i'm using the turntable without antiskating weight and it seems to be ok anyway... but could this lead to some kind of damage to the cartridge?
raoulduke881 It will work, but it means the stylus will now press more heavily against one side of the record wall. This could result in a poorer audio performance, and over time will wear the record wall unevenly and possibly effect the suspension on your cartridge. We would recommend giving your local shop a call.
Regarding the ground-wire on the RCA cable, if I want to connect the RCA cable to an extender or splitter to connect to another RCA cable in order to gain length and distance from the receiver, would the ground have to be grounded? I'm not even sure that my receiver even has a place for it.
Hi Jim, Glad you like our videos! In regards to your Xtension 10 tonearm question; yes there should be a very delicate amount of play in the bearing. If the bearing is tightened too much it can cause unwanted movement of the tonearm and other issues. Hope this helps!
I apologize for what may be a stupid question, but I'm puzzled because you adjusted the counterweight by moving it forward and backward until it was balanced, but when you turned it counter-clockwise for the appropriate number, the entire counterweight moved forward. so what was the point of balancing it in the first place? the one i'm working with doesn't move forward when you turn the dial; you'd have to move it arbitrarily.
hi, i have brought an project essential II/Phono USB here in australia. I have encountered a problem I could not figure out yet - set up as the above great video instruction but connected to my Denon AVR 2803 the sound is awful, muffled and disorted. I have tried for hours but can not get it going the way it supposed to play. Can you help? Many thanks and kind regards, andy
Hi Andy, it sounds like you're plugging into the Phono input. The Essential USB already has a phono stage built in, so you need to connect it to a Line input (like a CD or AUX input).
Had the same problem, took it out the phone input into the line input and wey hey, thank you, could've have saved myself hours of grieve if i'd found this question first.

Thank you very much for this video!!! I don´t know if you could help me with something. I set everything up as you explain in the video and I plug the turntable to a Behringer pre-amp (PP400), and the to my amp, but I don´t get a high volume out of the turntable. I have to put the volume quite high on the amp to get a good level. Is there anyway to get more volume out of the turntable? Is it a problem of the pre-amp? Thanks!
***** It sounds like a problem with the phono pre-amp. I don't know it so can't offer any suggestions; but low output normally means a problem at the phono stage level.
Hi, I've just bought debut carbon and in the manual (slovak language) there was written to ratate the counterweight clockwise. Then I saw your video and you turned it counter clockwise, so I looked to the english manual and there was the same direction as in the video, so it was just the mistake in the translation. Now, I want to ask what happend to my turntable during the time, when the counterweight was not properly set up? The sound of music was fine, so I don't know. Thank you.
It depends on what kind of sonic presentation you want. Rega's tend to be leaner, Pro-jects fatter (warmer). I prefer pro-jects but you may not. Only one way to find out... Also, is where you intend placing the TT on level? If not , you'll need to go for the pro-ject since regas don't have levelling feet.
for this turn table, what is the neccesary equipment, you need to use to make this tunrtable sound, a receiver with phono input, and bookshelf speakers will work?
Hi Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I have recently bought a project 6.1 which came with the user manual but which is very difficult to understand. The 3 transit screws holding down the suspended deck were screwed down but I don't know whether to take these out, in which case the deck floats too high for the belt to run the sub platter, or to how many turns to unscrew them, in which case the deck is still held by them. Is there a video available of set up for this turntable?
I'm struggling with what I believe is called 'wow and flutter'... sustained notes on recordings shifting pitch slightly, but noticeably... with my new Debut 3 SE. I've checked there aren't any noticeable obstructions or grime on the motor and belt, and adjusted the counterweight slightly but the problem persists. Have you any suggestions as to what could be causing this, and any possible solutions to the problem, please?
Crow Versus Crow I would recommend returning the turntable to your retailer if it is new, or to your local distributor if it is out of warranty. They can check everything and ensure it's working properly. All decks are affected by wow & flutter, but it should not be so blatantly audible - particularly on Pro-Ject models.
I had this record player a couple of years - and now when I trying to lower the tonearm lift lever, the lift doesn't go down, but stays in the upper position. Can I clean or lubricate any part of the lift-mechanism?
The curved arm that actually lifts the tonearm up and down has a small flat-head screw in it. You can try to loosen this off to allow the spring mechanism to have more effect. If not, i'd suggest getting in touch with a local service agent.
I have a question: Do you need to remove the arm in order to change the cart on an xpression? It seems phenomenally difficult to bolt the inner side of the cart (unless i'm clearly missing something here)
Can't seem to get this working with my Polk speakers. Connected via raw black/red wires into correct +/- slots but no music is going to the speakers. I've the project jukebox by the way. Cheers.
Hey. Its the jukebox so has its own receiver built in. Figured it out anyway. There was a second AC adaptor. 16v and 21v both need to be plugged in! Durr... Cheers anyway.
Hi, can you help me again, I have the arm correctly balanced and revolve the downforce scale ring until the zero. How many marks should I rotate the counterweight for a MC Rondo Red?
Good Morning Harry, For the Rondo Red you'll want a tracking force of roughly 2.3g (23mN) so turn the counterweight all the way around until you get to third little mark after the big 20 one. Hope this helps!
Hi Jason, if removing the dust cover is an option then it's good practice to do so as it will add the potential for more vibration. But the difference is minimal, so it really depends how audiophile you are! Hope this helps!
I bought a Pro-ject turntable 25 years ago, can't remember the model. More, I lost the white plastic ruler and the white and the yellow sheets. How could I purchase them? Is there a video also for my turntable? Thanks!
Good Afternoon, Thanks for your comment! The white plastic ruler that you mention is most likely a manual tracking force gauge, which you can find here: www.henleyaudio.co.uk/products/Tracking-Force-Protractor I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the white and yellow sheets, perhaps the product manual? These are available online but we would need to figure out which turntable you have before sending you the correct one. Give us a call on 01235 511 166 to talk to our technical team and we can help you get to the bottom of it! Hope this helps!
@@HenleyAudio Thanks for answering so quickly! I live in Italy, so I prefer keep in touch with an email or similar, like this. The two sheets were, if memory helps, the exploded scheme of the turntable and the other one the instructions or the manual. I am grateful for the link, probably it was the tool for setting the weight and the alignment of the cartridge, since there was a hole on a side and two little teeth underneath. I am now going to check the link. Regarding the turntable I don't know if it was one of their first models. I am going to their site, but probably already did it without finding the things I needed. I am going to ask them too with an E-mail. Thanks again for Your video! Cheers from Florence.
Hi there! Just a quick and possibly silly question - the weight set on my cartridge is set at 2.0 grams (perfect for my cartridge) before I hang my anti skate weight. It lowers to 1.75 grams once the anti skate weight is attached. Is this correct? Or should I set my ideal weight when the anti skate weight is on? Cheers
Meik Hauswurz Hi Meik, the antiskate weight will naturally reduce some of the downforce you've applied, but this is taken into account when the cartridge is designed. Always set the downforce first - to the correct setting - and then apply the antiskate weight.
I just bought a used Argon Audio version of this turntable (TT-2) and got it set up like this, but the sound is still awful. A lot of static noice, like scratching and cracking, over the music. The turntable is properly connected and grounded to my amplifier. What could be wrong?
Good Morning - Argon Audio tts are likely very different to Pro-Ject turntables so the issue could be any number of things. It's possible you're doubling the signal if you have a built-in phonostage and are still running it into an external one. But aside from this it is likely best you contact Argon Audio or your retailer to troubleshoot.
hi! I would like to buy this TT, to listen to some electronic dub music, deep dubstep and some electro club music white labels, but mainly dub and deep dubstep. My question is, is the OM5E cartridge good for that kind of music, or should i buy another one for my lovely dubz? and which one if needed? thanks in advance :)
My tonearm lift lever does not lift the tonearm fully off the tonearm rest. I just set up the turntable (Pro-Ject Debut Carbon) and it does not work. The tonearm can be manually placed on the record and it play beautifully, but it has to be manually placed on the record. Any suggestions?
The lift mechanism is only designed to lift the cartridge off the record, and drop it down gently when cueing at the beginning of a record. It is not an automatic mechanism. Is this what you mean?
David Codiga OK. If you take the arm out of its rest with the lift lever in the down position, you can see the arched arm that the lift/lower lever moves. On top of that arched arm you will see there is a flat-head screw. If you slightly loosen that screw, you should find the arched arm will now have more effect on the arm. I hope this helps.
Hi! You can absolutely get a replacement counterweight for this turntable! To confirm, this is a Debut S/E 3 but as long as you know what your deck is you'll be able to find the correct replacement on our website: hwww.henleyaudio.co.uk/products/Counterweights?DepartmentIds=1&BrandIds=2
Hi, hoping someone might be able to help! I received a Debut s/e 3 from some friends (2nd hand from one of their parents who never used it) and I'm having serious issues. Once connected to the pre-amp (an ART accessories DJ Pre II) and that to my amp (Cambridge Audio AM-5) the sound is horribly distorted and unlistenable. The "clip signal" light on the pre amp flickers between yellow and red and if I plug direct into the amp (which has no phono stage) the sound is audible but there is noticeable distortion. The cables I use from the pre-amp to the amp are fine (I've tested on my CD player) and another budget turntable works fine with the set up. I can only imagine that the issue is either the wired in phono cable from the turntable or the stylus? I have next to no knowledge of turntables so wondering if someone could help as it's such a nice piece of kit I'd love to use it to it's full potential!
Do you mean the anti-skate weight? I can't think of any reason why this should fall down if the turntable is set-up properly. I would suggest contacting your retailer or local distributor for help - as that's not a normal issue i've come across.
Hi Fabian, something doesn't sound right there. Drop our technical team an email and they should be able to help you troubleshoot! technical@henleyaudio.co.uk
I bought a second-hand one and the sound is terrible. Also the counterweight is missing. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? My previous turntable worked just fine and was really easy to setup. But this one I just cant seem to get to work properly.
Hi Daniel, Sorry to hear that - but if the counterweight is missing it will sound terrible as the downforce on the cartridge will be all wrong (and potentially damaging to your stylus and vinyl). If you drop our tech support team a quick email they'd be more than happy to help you figure out what is needed to get the player singing :) Shoot technical@henleyaudio.co.uk a message or give us a ring on +441235 511 166
Good Afternoon, Since the Pro-Ject range is rather extensive the answer will vary based on model. Do you know which model you have/are considering? Let us know!
You just saved me from returning a stack of used records to my local shop. Thanks for the clarity around the weight balancing, I felt stupid but it cured my problem. ua-cam.com/video/sgJ53im9ZL4/v-deo.htmlm25s was the key hint.
My counterweight doesn't seem to latch on, so twisting it counterclockwise or clockwise doesn't do anything. i can only get it to move back and forth by pushing and pulling it. suggestions?
When putting the counterweight on you slip it on a little way and then use the metal body of the counterweight to guide it backwards or forwards. Turning the plastic dial will have no effect as it turns separately of the main body. Give it a go pushing it on initially a little further than you feel it should be and let us know if you have any luck
I understand that, but isn't the counterweight supposed to latch on to something on the tonearm so twisting the metal piece moves it backwards and forwards? I can move it by pushing it, and can probably find the right balance and just adjust it if it ever moves, but I'd rather get it right so I don't damage the needle or my records. Thanks for your help!
No worries! Here to help you sort it! If you look under the tonearm there should be a little springy bit of metal about 1cm in from the back. This is what allows the counterweight to twist back and forth. Even with this you'll be able to slide it back and forth without twisting so worth checking it's there. If it's not there or you are concerned that it may be broken give us a call or pop in to your local Pro-ject dealer to have a chat/ look at it.
Good Afternoon, that doesn't sound right! There should be three small notches on the rod that you loop the anti-skate on to, have you tried it on different ones to see if it helps?
They forgot one important step. Before adjusting things be sure that the turntable is perfectly leveled. This can be painstaking because the feet are not 100% the same. Measure it carefully in all directions. Then start adjusting it according this video. When you forget the leveling process all adjustments can be off spec.
This is just a turntable, so it needs to be plugged into an amp (and phono stage) to make a sound through speakers. The amp it is connected to should normally have a spare input you could plug an MP3 device into - but it completely depends on your set up.
Still useful 12 years later. Thanks.
That's the aim! Glad it helped :)

HenleyDesignsLtd could the hoop be misaligned? are there some specific settings? i've tried to rotate it but the problem persists...
raoulduke881 It is possible that the hoop has been moved to a wrong position.
How man mm do you turn for an Ortofon OM 5 e Cartridge
No, they are there to hold the rubber supports in place, like with this turntable.
Regarding the ground-wire on the RCA cable, if I want to connect the RCA cable to an extender or splitter to connect to another RCA cable in order to gain length and distance from the receiver, would the ground have to be grounded? I'm not even sure that my receiver even has a place for it.
should there be a little play in the tone arm pivet bearing side to side and up and down i have xtension 10 love your channel
Hi Jim,
Glad you like our videos! In regards to your Xtension 10 tonearm question; yes there should be a very delicate amount of play in the bearing. If the bearing is tightened too much it can cause unwanted movement of the tonearm and other issues.
Hope this helps!
thank you
I apologize for what may be a stupid question, but I'm puzzled because you adjusted the counterweight by moving it forward and backward until it was balanced, but when you turned it counter-clockwise for the appropriate number, the entire counterweight moved forward. so what was the point of balancing it in the first place? the one i'm working with doesn't move forward when you turn the dial; you'd have to move it arbitrarily.
hi,
i have brought an project essential II/Phono USB here in australia.
The Essential USB already has a phono stage built in, so you need to connect it to a Line input (like a CD or AUX input).
thank you so much for your fast and successful answer...learned something new today.
You need speakers as well
Third one was sweet. I love it
Hi, I've just bought debut carbon and in the manual (slovak language) there was written to ratate the counterweight clockwise. Thank you.
I have the Denon PMA520AE Amp and it sounds great with the Carbon.
Alright, cool! Where do I get one? I'm afraid I might have thrown mine away carelessly after not understanding where it was meant to go.
So a Phono Box is required in addition to the Stereo box in order to run?
for this turn table, what is the neccesary equipment, you need to use to make this tunrtable sound, a receiver with phono input, and bookshelf speakers will work?
To change speed to 45 you remove the platter, move the belt to the other pulley, and then put the platter back down.
Hi
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I have recently bought a project 6.1 which came with the user manual but which is very difficult to understand.
It seems phenomenally difficult to bolt the inner side of the cart (unless i'm clearly missing something here)
Hi there! I have a RPM 5.1, when I place the needle at the disk, I hear a buzz, like a grave background noise, can it be a tuning problem?
I just got my Pro-Ject 3 s/e today and I cannot find a counterweight anywhere at all. Anyway I could get this resolved?
Thx, really helpful.
Can't seem to get this working with my Polk speakers. Connected via raw black/red wires into correct +/- slots but no music is going to the speakers. I've the project jukebox by the way. Cheers.
Is the record player connected to a pre amp or amp with a phono input?
Good Morning Harry,
For the Rondo Red you'll want a tracking force of roughly 2.3g (23mN) so turn the counterweight all the way around until you get to third little mark after the big 20 one.
Hope this helps!
Do you suggest playing records without the dust cover on?
Hi Jason, if removing the dust cover is an option then it's good practice to do so as it will add the potential for more vibration. But the difference is minimal, so it really depends how audiophile you are!
Hope this helps!
Anyone know what the small little rectangular piece of plastic with two slots in it is for that came with my Project turntable?
I bought a Pro-ject turntable 25 years ago, can't remember the model. More, I lost the white plastic ruler and the white and the yellow sheets.
How could I purchase them? Is there a video also for my turntable? Thanks!
Good Afternoon,
Thanks for your comment! The white plastic ruler that you mention is most likely a manual tracking force gauge, which you can find here: www.henleyaudio.co.uk/products/Tracking-Force-Protractor
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the white and yellow sheets, perhaps the product manual? These are available online but we would need to figure out which turntable you have before sending you the correct one.
Give us a call on 01235 511 166 to talk to our technical team and we can help you get to the bottom of it!
Hope this helps!

Thanks for answering so quickly!

YES!!! It was the Protractor!! Thanks a lot! I am going to order it as sooner as possible!✌
@@littlebritain64 Good luck with your hunt, happy to help!
Is this the same for the carbon? Same setup?
Cheers
Meik Hauswurz always set the tracking force with the anti skate weight on
Meik Hauswurz Hi Meik, the antiskate weight will naturally reduce some of the downforce you've applied, but this is taken into account when the cartridge is designed.
I am going to put this on my wall.
I have a more recent model with no pulley and a much longer drive belt which appears to be slightly too long even to fit around the turntable. ????
What is the name of the turntable you purchased? If it is a Pro-Ject, there will be a pulley somewhere.
The lift mechanism is not "lifting" the tone arm high enough. It barely engages the tone arm.
What's that safety string thing good for?
Does anyone know if i can get a replacement tonearm counterweight for this turntable?
The S/E3 does not have wired-in phono cables. The issue could be with the stylus, but we would recommend visiting a local retailer for confirmation.
how about the signal cables?
My calibration was way off this instruction. I had to turn the dial way back to stop needle grating the vinyl.
Can anybody tell me what is the size (in mm) of the belt, please.
I have a 2m red on the Carbon Project and the small rope doesn't stay on the small stick . Any help ?
Do you mean the anti-skate weight? I can't think of any reason why this should fall down if the turntable is set-up properly. I would suggest contacting your retailer or local distributor for help - as that's not a normal issue i've come across.
the small loop with the knot does actually tighten if you force it a little. mine also kept slipping off until I forced the knot to move.
I set it up but the tonearm doesn't reach the record. I adjust the guide and it fixes it temporarily but always resets. what do I do?
Hi Fabian, something doesn't sound right there. Drop our technical team an email and they should be able to help you troubleshoot!
technical@henleyaudio.co.uk
I bought a second-hand one and the sound is terrible. Also the counterweight is missing. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? My previous turntable worked just fine and was really easy to setup. But this one I just cant seem to get to work properly.
Hi Daniel,
Sorry to hear that - but if the counterweight is missing it will sound terrible as the downforce on the cartridge will be all wrong (and potentially damaging to your stylus and vinyl).
If you drop our tech support team a quick email they'd be more than happy to help you figure out what is needed to get the player singing :)

Is there any need to adjust the azimuth with this turntable?
Good Afternoon,
Since the Pro-Ject range is rather extensive the answer will vary based on model. Do you know which model you have/are considering?
Let us know!
im looking into the pro-ject debut iii@@HenleyAudio
Hi, do you know what the weight of an Ortofon Rondo Red MC Cartridge?
Good Morning,
10.5g is the weight of the cartridge with a recommended tracking force of 2.3g.
Hope this helps!
Thank you very much, for the information and the video
You just saved me from returning a stack of used records to my local shop. Thanks for the clarity around the weight balancing, I felt stupid but it cured my problem. ua-cam.com/video/sgJ53im9ZL4/v-deo.htmlm25s was the key hint.
what album(s) are playing in this video? good music
Bravo, ben spiegato. Meno male che c'era il tuo video...
How do I adjust the VTA?
My counterweight doesn't seem to latch on, so twisting it counterclockwise or clockwise doesn't do anything. i can only get it to move back and forth by pushing and pulling it. suggestions?
Hi Adam, Which turntable do you have?
Pro-Ject Debut DC Carbon
When I put the anti skate on mine it pulls is so far right it doesn’t go straight down
Good Afternoon, that doesn't sound right!
Great tip! Thanks Marco!
I would also like to know the the artist and song?
Does anybody else have an issue with the anti skate weight staying in place? Mine always falls off. Any tips to fix this?
tone arm keeps on moving away from the record with the anti skating weight?
There cannot be enough down-force applied.
is there a possibility to plug in an mp3 device to this turntable?
This is just a turntable, so it needs to be plugged into an amp (and phono stage) to make a sound through speakers. The amp it is connected to should normally have a spare input you could plug an MP3 device into - but it completely depends on your set up.
right, cheers mate
Can we get a proper video on how to actually set up the cartridge? that's the most difficult part
i lost my white metal gauage where can i get a spare??
