Dave Brubeck. "Take Five".
Thursdays are my days-off, so I tend to take advantage of them.
Nazareth no mean city. Mine is from 1978 :D
Nice! That’s a classic 👍
Nice!

Literally came here to say this. RIP VILLAIN!
I'm really glad that there are easy to reach guides for people who want to build their own turntable and know what parts should they have. Your videos have already helped me build my first (if not counting the old crosley-esque one that I had before) vinyl player last year big thanks!
It’s a turntable dipshit
Part that is missing in this video:
If you DO have an amp with a dedicated PHONO input, you do not need a separate preamp and you connect your turntable directly to the amp on the PHONO input.
If your turntable has this PHONO/LINE switch and your amp does not have a PHONO input, set the switch to LINE and connect the turntable to a LINE/AUX input.
I was just about to write the same because my amp had a phono input so that I don't need a external preamp.
Very true, forgot to mention that in the vid but thanks for bringing it to our attention 👍
I have the "Problem" that my volume is to high. If i have it at about 1/4 of the possible Volume it already is way to loud (And i usually listen music loud, so it is way to loud for me and for the Speakers) ive got an amp with a built-in Preamp and a Rega Planar 3 turntable. Im not sure if the Turntable has also got a built-in preamp becouse i couldnt find that phono/line switch but i was thinking that (Because it is so loud) it could be Pre-amplified twice.
@@juri2894 if you conect it to the phono line of your amplifier and the sound came out loud no need for pre-amplifier ,sometimes the pre-amplifier takes the quality of your stylus that you paid in return of a louder sound wich is not a good exchange, normally all amplifiers with phono line and good turntables that are good in construction no need for pre-amplifier they are ready to be working and normally no turntable with pre-amplifier have a switch just those brands for kids ,yours is good i have a friend that bought one it´s old was having to much problems but to give you an idea i own a pioneer from 74 later i bought a technics SL-3310 later with a quartz engine they renamed it to SL-5000 this are turntables with more than 40 years of use and for decades they were working everyday we are in 2020 and no diference from the day i bought them i have the original cartridge and stylus and their stylus are from their brands not new ones from stylus manufacturers and they would be very expensive if i wanted the same quality in a new one let´s say as an example Ortofon (the right sound in Italian, and a very old brand that i used through out the 90´s as a dj because they had at the time an excelent professional series of stylus) i would have to spend almost 500€ to have the same quality from my high-end stylus from technics in second alf of the 70´s, i have also problems with my new neigboors but i let them scream and call the police and the policeman that was at my door he phoned me, we studied together in highschool and he was far crazier than me i was using a system from 76 that was from my dead and burried father two mono amplifiers a pre-amplifier two huge speakers like you could by a second hand bmw at the time with the money and i use the volume a litle up from 1/4 with loudness on ,treble at 3/4´s and bass at 2/4 also a 12 frequencies dual equalizer with the spectrum as the shape of two boobs on a beach layin´down seen from above and i remenber to listen to a paradise lost lp" icon "and the first of rage against the machine i went to the door and shake hands with the cop ,an old friend and ask him it´s not suposed to be silent time after 11p.m. he replyed yes ,the new neighboor a girl in hers 30´s start to scream like a chiken and in front of the police i screamed to her "if you wanted silence you shouldn´t had while i was in vacations stole 3/4 of my house wall when repairing yours ! "enough with the police listening she went to her house and closed the door , later at 12 p.m. a friend of mine pass through my house and we went to a friends concert hall and he lives down the street 50 meters and he asked me" what happened with your new neighboor?" ,i replyed that she thought the sound was too loud ,than he said to me i went for a smoke on the balcony and didn´t had to conect my stereo the music coming from your house was loud and clear"i said to him if we can hear music till 11 p.m. by law it was still alf past nine, it´s a war ,some like music other prefer those t.v shows that a series as episodes for 2 years and the story is about a guy who married and from nowhere his long dead girlfriend appears after 10 years and says ,my sister died not me than the guy becomes lover of his long lost girlfriend but his wife talks to drug dealers and paid to kill the new husband lover, than the dealer reconises her and can´t killer because she gave his mother a kidney so she could live than he says to his wife that he can´t make it because of the kidney and the wife kills herself the old girlfriend of his husband then she goes to jail but while crying an older girlfriend shows up and they live happy and with 4 kids to the eternity, and normally they spent money on a game together and they get the prize of hundreds of thousands of dollars all happy with kids and 2 dogs that had puppies and everybody cries of hapiness but not while i listen to rage against the machine first lp,and normally i start with "know your enemy" ,regards
On the back of my TubeAmp has an input called "Tuner". Is Tuner=Phono? If they are the same then I don't have to get preamp turntable.
Been watching youtube videos for like a decade, and more often than not guides like this on different things. This is BY FAR the most helpful guide ive ever come across. Extremely helpful.
Well, noticed that the video will be good just after the song of the day was announced (which, by the way, is magnificent). Even though I do know how to connect everything, I still watch it as the video is really entertaining, good job!
Glad you liked both the SOTD and the vid! More good stuff on the way! 😊
spent almost 30 minutes worrying about how to connect the speakers to my turntable, thank you for this video. now i can skip the panic attack & play vinyls
I'm new to the vinyl world and just got a system from the early 80s. PIONEER CS-787 speakers. Denon DCD 500 AE CD-Player. Denon Surround Receiver AVR1908
Denon DP- 30L. And it keeped blowing out on my making defening noise. I didn't realise you need to ground these old record players. It was driving me nuts, you saved me thank you so much. Now I need to see why it crackles, new needle?
You helped tremendously. Output was super low on phono. Switched to line and blew the house down. Thanks
Can you make a video on playback of 78s on a modern turntable? Like where you for example recommend cartridges.
Great idea! Personally I’d recommend the Grado 78E cartridge for playing 78s.
Vinyl Eyezz cool! But it’s a little bit more expensive than what I would like. Is the Ortofon 2M 78 any good?
@@vinyleyezz The Shure M78S with after market stylus works best, 2-3g is too light for 78, mild warps will skip
I'm new to Vinyl Records and I'm watching all of your videos, they are so helpful, thank you so much ❤🙏
Your videos are very informative and you have a nice voice to listen to, Jared.
Song of the Day: Hotel California by The Eagles
Never heard of it.

Lil View HOW?!
Hotel California is a one star Yelp review with the two minute guitar solo
Thanks so much for an Excellent instructional video. Very helpful. I’m a total beginner who’s had a Thorens TD 158 in a box since owning, ready to enjoy my vinyl records 😊
Song of the Day: Lateralus - TOOL
Thank you so much! I had no idea I needed a pre amp I just thought the record player was not working being so quiet 🙃
Ah this was so detailed!! Found out right away I don’t have everything I need. Thank you!!
Loving the OM vinyl at the back!
🤟😎🤟
Thanks! Good to have you back.
So if I have a turntable with a preamp I need active speakers? Or can I connect a turntable with preamp to a passive speaker without a receiver?
I was just about to ask that but i think that u need active speakers.
And if u want to use passive speaker s u would need a reciver
Both Lonely Boy and Sister by the Black Keys are massive jams
This is excellent! Been looking for a simple and well explained video to help me out. Thanks so much!
Song of the day…Scotty doesnt know
Love the Om record you have on display - Adviatic Songs is 🔥
Immediate sub because HOMIE GOT THE SH2 SOUNDTRACK AND AN OM VINYL JUST HANGING THERE
Gosh this dude is helpful but I always zone out listening to him
really glad you're back, jarrett
my song of the day is Tremors- Angels and Airwaves
Great video Jarrett! I'm currently spinning Beck's new album Hyperspace, HIGHLY recommended! Bright red 180g edition!
I wanna get a nice set up but I’m not made of money 😂
My god. That Silent Hill 2 vinyl!
Love it
So what I take away from this video is that I could get away with a turntable with a preamp and an active speaker and that's it? Please let me know if this is correct
Thats right
Helped a beginner set up his player so I figured I'd repay it with a comment
Nice video on setting up system
Hey, I'm looking for my first turntable and as a student with a manifest lack of money, I decided to buy a turntable that connects to my bluetooth box (I know, I'm sorry, later I will upgrade my setup). What do you think is the best turntable with bluetooth? The Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT or the Sony PS-LX310BT?
I am 70 years old and now reconnecting my old amplifier and phono and tapes to a new Denon. It’s does not work . Your video was marvellous . How do I know if my amplifier has a preamp ? It’s a old 1980s JVC Thank you very much for your video it was very easy to follow
Thank you so much! Great breakdown for someone new to manual set up. :)
What is the album you have in the video with the icon cover artwork?
You need to complete your video and show how level the turntable and how to align the cartridge, and set the proper needle pressure and adjust anti skating control. Thanks
Do you have a video showing how to do it with a player that has a built in preamp?
Mine does and I am lost on how to connect speakers to it
Are you sure grounding the chasis will do the trick? Thought it had to be a proper grounding screw? My Suitcase Record Player doesn't have built in pre amp
I believe you said, Use a nice TT like this one. Now get the cheapest interconnects you can find
Red goes to red, black to black thanks
what to do if you have 2 turntables and connecting it to a mixer with only space for ground wire ? what do you so with the other turntable ground wire ?
So I can skip buying an Amplifier and buy an Active speaker set is this correct? Amazing video btw thank you!
I see vinyl OM !!! Coollll
I like your icon of St. John the Baptist at 1:16 :)
Thank you for your detail information it will be so easy to setup turntable!!!!! Thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching Tai! 😊👍
So if I'm a complete beginner that's not looking for amazing quality, the most budget friendly option (that's not a suitcase player that'll ruin my records) would be to buy a turntable that has a preamp and connect it to some active speakers, right?
Can one do a simple turntable / wireless earphones set up? Going minimalist here.
Saw your excellent UA-cam video on how to connect a turntable to a Panasonic system.
Ours has a SU-CH7 amplifier, ST-CH7 tuner, SL-CH7 CD player. We are attempting to connect a SANYO TP 1005 A turntable to this system. It does not appear that the SANYO has a pre-amp.
We plug the turntable into the amp via the RCA jacks, into either the VDP or VCR/DAT inputs on the SU-CH7 (the other option, OUT, doesn’t produce anything). Those are the only RCA inputs on that amp. Adjusting the Volume knob on either VDP or VCR.DAT shows it going from -82 to 0 , but even at that highest level the volume is quite low, on either VDP or VCR/DAT. When we switch it from VDP or VCR/DAT to FM, the volume level is very high! We have to turn the volume knob down by about 180 degrees. We figure we’re missing something, but don’t know what. Can you assist? Thanks! Jim in Thunder Bay Ontario.
Another item to note is that some receivers have an input labeled "phono", which means it has an internal pre-amp. You can plug your turntable directly into this phono input. However, most external pre-amps are of superior quality than the internal pre-amp in a receiver. If you are using an external pre-amp, you'll want to plug into one of the other channels on your receiver and NOT into the phono channel, or else your sound will be distorted.
I wonder how many times vinyl eyezz has said "Hey friends." Your vinyl videos are super helpful. Thx
Sleep-Godspeed You! Black Emperor
This all seems way too complicated.
Agreed
Yup
It’s so hard😭it’s taking me hours
Why do you think no one uses vinyl anymore
It’s literally a few steps task, can’t believe someone finds this complicated…
is there any difference in terms of sound quality if i decide to connect active speakers directly to my turntable (AT LP120 so it does have a preamp) or does having a receiver a better option?
Great video. Very helpful!
Glad to help! 😊
Can I ground the preamp to a speaker negative terminal (instead of preamp grounded to the amp/receiver)? Will it be just as effective?
Can I connect my TV and record player in the receiver and use the same speakers?
Active speakers don’t always have volume knobs. Essentially an easy way to tell is that active/powered speakers don’t have an input for naked wired cables.
Thanks for the help!
Is it necessary to connect a ground cable to the receiver from the pre amp
So when do you need a receiver? If your turntable or speakers don’t have a volume knob? Or you want to run multiple devices through the same speakers? Do receivers ever come with their own internal preamp? If so, do you need a separate one between turntable and receiver?
I would like to add two important points here, just in case to speak to everyone with different kinds of setups. I think Vinyl Eyezz made good points, these are just for addition.
1. If your receiver has PHONO inputs, you can plug your PHONO outputs of the turntable directly to the receiver. You don't need to buy an extra phono preamp, unless you want to invest a high-end phono preamp, to improve sound quality. In this case the the preamp outputs still need to go to the LINE inputs of the receiver again, not to the PHONO ones.
2. If your turntable has LINE outputs and you switched to this setting instead of phono, DO NOT plug LINE outputs to PHONO inputs anywhere. Phono signal is very low compared to Line. Connecting Line outputs to any Phono inputs won't work, or might damage your preamplifier or receiver. Same logic applies to the preamp outputs. DO NOT connect preamp LINE outputs to PHONO inputs of your receiver. These should be connected to LINE inputs as it is shown in the video.
Happy Listening!
You're back!!!
We purchased a vintage setup. The turntable is super sensitive, and I am struggling as the records skip, sound bad. The adjustments are confusing
Could I use an audio interface as an amplifier?
I have hooked up my TT to an integrated amplifier and it plays well. If I hook up a preamp between the TT and the preamp, will it improve the sound much more?
Traffic Jam by James Taylor!!!👍👍👍
Its not a crosley turntable but would it still be a good turntable with a red needle?
Metal Jesus getting down with the request
could i connect active speakers directly into a turntable with a built in preamp?
Will I need to use a receiver if my turntable has built in pre amp and I use powered speakers?
No. You may eventually want to upgrade to using a receiver as it can push out more power + better sound, but to get started, no you don't need the receiver as long as your speakers are active/powered and your turntable has a built in preamp.
Referring to a Phono Stage* as a "PRE-AMP" tells* me that you have little (to no) idea as to what you're doing. Well Done!!!!
What do you do if your turntable doesn’t have a built in preamp and it shows nothing to hook up the ground wire?
May i connect an ampl to active speakers? Is there a problem ? Or i have to use only pasive speakers for conect the amp.. thamks
This is useful if I do even upgrade I'm content with uturn orbit.
What about adding a subwoofer to your setup?
Is a receiver the same as an amplifier?
I have the PL 990 Pioneer. Able to setup and spin by itself but no input levels when connecting RCA to audio interface as normal. I'm guessing you need a pre amp in between given there's no switch at the back of the turntable. There are only 2 RCAs. no ground cable like in the video though?
Vinyl Eyezz Very nice content & insight, With your current setup up do you use a Subwoofer or just two other speakers?
You are great sir from Pakistan
bought a stereo receiver without any prior knowledge together with a turntable but no speakers. Dumb question: if I do not connect speakers to the receiver will it produce sound? the receiver model is sony str dh190
Fluance must have cheaped out a little bit since this video was released. My rt-85 only came with one rca cable and one ground wire and my Fluance preamp didn't come with a ground wire or an rca cable. Whats the point of including the rca cable and ground wire at all if I'm going to have to buy another set anyways?
Great video, helped me with my first setup! :)
What if I have a turntable with phono and active speakers, can I connect them directly or do I still need a receiver?
ELI5 why turntables have ground posts which has to connect to the preamp?
So if im using powered speakers, do I just need a turntable, preamp and those powered speakers and I'll be good?
Excellent explanation and tutorial! Thank you!
Song: Comrades -> Half-Light
How would the setup work with a built in amp?
Now what if I wanted to use monitor speakers.
(Ex. Yamaha HS5)
Would I use an adapter for 1/4 female to rca’s?
Hey, if the turntable has a built in pre-amp, is it possible to hook it directly to active speakers ?
Have searched, but can't find the answer. Hoping you can help? I have a Pioneer PL-112D TT and a JVC A-X2 amp. Amp has a phono input and both sockets are black. TT has a phono lead, and there's a red and white phono plug. Does it matter which goes where? Like, I was thinking, Red for Right, but I dunno. Can't really find much on the web
I thought the pre-amp could also be inside the receiver, no?
Does it matter how long the exposed copper wire part is? For example if the copper comes out half an inch on the other side of the terminal, will it affect Sound?
song of the day...
Neil Diamond - Holly Holy
I am looking for a speaker that takes the plug in the back not the 2 wires.
I just brought home a receiver (built in preamp) and a turntable. I don’t have speakers yet but trying to turn everything on to see if it works - turntable is great but I can’t get the receiver to light up - it also doesn’t connect to an outlet or anything (but is connected to the turntable). Is it a dud? Am I missing something?
Idk if this is a dumb question, but could one use a bluetooth speaker with it's own AUX 3.5 mm input as speakers as long as you have an adapter and the speaker has it's own power source (whether it be its rechargeable battery or having it plugged to a power outlet while on via a charging cable) and it's own volume buttons? I'm referencing a portable JBL speaker.
What if your using two turntables can you get dual input receiver?
I got a Argon TT turntable with built in RIAA amplifier for XMas and later i bought the Argon tenris A4 active speakers. The Argon stuff is amazing. I do wonder if the turnt t has a built RIAA amp could i have just bought passive speakers? I do leave the RIAA amp in off mode. I did all the set ups but i missed the needle tracking adjustment but i cant adjust the screws and my TT does not have a skateing adjustment. I bought a simple TT wich is just straight forward but it is so much better than the sheap All in one turntable i had wich you talked about, that you REALLY didnt recomended, built in speakers, amp etc... i mean it was my 1st tt, it was a start of the hoby, i didnt know anything about vinyl records. You always start with something sheap...id started with crappy stuff. Now i feel like a more of a pro:ish record spinner 🙂.
Superb detailed video. 👍 How do I connect this to my Yamaha RXV AV receiver which has phono stage as well as Rca line in plug's ?
