Fun fact with Martian Gothic! It was planned to be a novel series but the writer was approached to make it into a game instead. This is why world-building takes such a large role, but in the end, the story is quite crazy good for a Sci-Fi. It even is the basis of inspiration for some elements in Dead Space as we know it. A Marker praised by a cult of people who don't understand the alien power, turning them into undead beings. :) Also sadly, they were rushed by like 6 months to get the game completed and shipped out. Resulting in a frustratingly difficult game and even some enemy mechanics missing. I think it had good potential but came out a little too late and sadly rushed as it was made by a very small team.
The first Resident Evil style clone game I remember playing was Hard Edge on the ps1. It was slightly different with a more anime style. You were one of two Future Swat team members trying to free a skyscraper from terrorists. I don’t remember too much after that.
One of the interesting mechanics in Martian Gothic: Unification Point is that the characters have to stay separated or else they'll be assimilated into a monstrosity called a "Tri-Morph". Oh man I completely forgot about Curse the Eye of Isis! My mom got it for me when it came out as a surprise gift, because she was convinced it was like Broken Sword... which it wasn't, like at all 😂 But fortunately I still liked it, so thanks mom
If you ever make a second video, there's 2 that's definitely worth checking out for fun times. One is Carrier for Dreamcast and the other is Mystic Nights for PS2 that was a Korean exclusive but it has a full English translation.
A pretty underrated RE clone on the PS1 was TRAG - Tactical Rescue Assault Group. It's not really survival horror because you can beat the crap out of enemies beat em up style, but there's the puzzles, passwords and maze like building to explore much like RE.
Galerians and Deep Fear could make some pretty cool games, just from the concept and story, if done right. I especially would love a game where you are a lab subject that has head popping powers and turn out to be the bad guy, or a survival horror in reverse in general, where you 'are the zombies'
I can't believe you didn't mention the drug use aspect of the original PS release of Galerians which was toned WAY DOWN in Galerians: Ash. Having to use drugs to fuel your individual powers as well as the drugs you use to keep them from overloading your brain AS WELL as the drugs you took for health was crazy given the frequency in which you used them. And since there were animations for many of them, you spent a good deal of time watching cinematics of Rion popping pills and injecting questionable substances straight into his carotid. I loved it.
Probably my favourite "RE Clone" was In Cold Blood by the devs of Beneath a Steel Sky & Broken Sword. It was basically James Bond done in the style of Resident Evil, but it was less of a survival horror & more of a point & click adventure game. However, there were a few levels with some rather horrific & tense moments that caught me off guard & definitely could've felt at home in a true survival horror game like Resident Evil. BTW, it's on GOG for less than 10 bucks!
Many of these elements also can be found in the first Fatal Frame game (i never got to play the other ones) and i feel like silent hill started out like a RE clone, but that could just be me remembering the games in the same genre which didnt have a large selection of games at the time.
Nope, you're absolutely correct, Silent Hill did indeed start life as Konami's answer to Resident Evil. However, over time Konami lost faith in the project, so the development team just said "fuck it" and decided to take the game in a very different direction than what Konami had originally wanted. Kinda like how Demon's Souls started life as a failed Elder Scrolls clone before Hidetaka Miyazaki swooped in and re-tooled the entire game into its final form.
Hey, I just want to say I've been binging your channel for the past weeks while I work. The good thing about your videos is that it does not contain your usual expected games on the list, some of it I've heard for the first time. So good job, and hope you have more views.
I remember reading about Cold Fear in a PSN magazine in middle school. Was so excited for it and when i bought it I absolutely loved it. It was probably shit idr much about it though.
I have that game I picked it up from a bargain bin a million years ago and still haven't gotten to it. If it's at least competent I'll probably enjoy it.
@@arkdetective Yep, truly the granddad of survival horror. Of course westerners wouldn't get a taste of that or even know of it's existence for a long time afterwards.
Yes but did you know alone in the dark is the first 3d survival horror game? And the first iteration of modern horror game which also went on to inspire resident evil greatly, i bet you didn't know about that.
Agreed! Playing through PE1 at the moment for the first time and it's great (on the small Vita screen). Never did finish PE2 so that's next on the list. PE3....ugh, might play it for completion's sake haha.
I totally thought Carrier on Dreamcast was what Deep Fear was supposed to be. I remember reading a Gamepro magazine and seeing the Deep Fear preview (I'm dating myself here) but never saw it come to states, though now I know why. When Carrier came out, I figured they just scrapped Deep Fear and made that instead. Now I know, haha. Thanks for sharing this!
Alone in the Dark did all of this first. Resident Evil is an AitD clone, and Survival Horror existed in Japan since Sweet Home on the Famicom (which also inspired Resident Evil itself).
There's a "devilman" resident evil like videogame that is a bit interesting, I thought it would be cool if you gave it a look later, If you haven't already
@@devastomondiale2241 the gameplay mimicks that of alone in the dark. Not sweet home. Sweet home was what resident evil was gonna be based off of. The game play was inspired by alone in the dark
My first survival horror was something called Alone in the Dark on the 3DO. Looking at it now and how the franchise endee up, I'm glad RE learned from their mistakes.
Always makes me feel weird, when someone who doesn't like tank controls reviews many tank control games. There's nothing wrong with them if you just play the games enough to get used to them
Yeah I don't get tank control haters. It's like they don't know what they're talking about, mofos don't even realize RE4 has tank controls. And they say they're outdated. Like it literally prevents you from losing the sense of direction, no other control scheme does that, how is it outdated?
@@steelbear2063 The complaint about Tank Controls is usually from the time-loss that happens as you rotate(ppl are usually impatient,w/ character-movement-response). Also, ppl who don't use the dodge-function effectively or have trouble w/ the controls,in general. Another thing is,if there isn't even a dodge function in the 1st place, you usually take damage for what seems an unfair reason... Those seem like valid complaints,if you aren't used to "Tank Controls" & you compare that,to how the majority of games don't use them... There is a valid argument, that dodging is usually much easier w/o tank controls. As,all you have to do is press the controls(or w/e is equivalent)to /immediately/ move the character. Versus, waiting for them to rotate,so that you can cause /any/ movement. Again, unless there is a "dodge" function,of some sort... It really depends,on which kind of controls you grow-up playing games w/. Or,if you can easily adjust to using different control styles & be as proficient w/ whatever you have to use(gamers don't usually have a choice, that is)... BTW,for the record,I like tank controls in games that are RE-style or use pre-rendered BGs(usually one-&-the-same). Tho,it can be hard for me to switch back-&-forth between styles & not need an "adjustment period",in certain games... -Peace
DEFINITELY check out The X-Files: Resist or Serve. I had a hard time grasping at first that there was a survival horror X-Files game, with 2 branching paths nonetheless, but it's also surprisingly decent. It's also hard as balls, but it has the series' spirit, with (fine, totally zoned out) voiceacting by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson themselves.
"May have worked on players in '96 but maybe not now" As I frantically try to do all I can to escape from being murdered by low poly abominations with god awful tank controls while simultaneously having a panic attack
I think he meant Survival Horror games that rip off Resident Evil Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu does utilize a "Resident Evil" style format of running around in a set environment where the player must traverse the landscape, while picking up necessary items to open locked doors and progress through the stage but that's where the similarities end I looked it up
Here's a suggestion. Second sight. It's actually kinda like the first game in this video, where someone wakes up to find they have psychic powers. It's very weird and clunky using a control style kinda similar to resident evil 4, but with levels instead of an open environment. It's still got the weird obtuse puzzles though. The story is also weird as fuck, to boot. It still managed o get 12 year old me with the obvious twist somehow. I guess I was too stupid to see it coming.
I hope you talke about Extermination in the future. It was reasonably good, even if it can’t compete with the greats. Also it had two different voice casts and sets of character models for the European and North American releases
Just want 2 add 2 what you said about Extermination... Namely, that it was also a launch title & it didn't take long for other games to over-shadow it... What I mean is,I started working in retail, about the time it came out. And,I always noticed LOTS of unsold copies in the game-case at our store. Then, years later, any of the other stores within the company I worked at,they would also have large quantities of the game, still unsold... Which, lead to it being easy to get a copy, for those waiting for it to be reduced. Or,put on clearance... I ended-up buying it about half-off from full-price,not on clearance. Because,I waited until sometime in 2004 & the store I was at,at the time, only had a few copies left. So,rather than risk waiting so long that the final copy sells,I bought it at about half-off. However, not long after, the store finally reduced all of their oldest PS2 games to almost single-digit pricing(Extermination ended-up going down to just $15,shortly after I bought my copy)... Anyway,I don't think the game was well-received by others, but I agree w/ you. As,I enjoyed it for awhile. Though, there was some part early in the game that either confused me or was too difficult for me. As,I bought the strategy-guide & the game,at the same time. But,even with the strategy-guide,I got stuck somewhere. And,when that happens,I move on to another game. In this case, there wasn't much choice,though... Another thing worth mentioning,is that the developers thought they had a "sure-fire hit". Since, there were Game Mags talking of it being like "Resident Evil-meets-The Thing",in their Previews of the game-footage... That is,I specifically can remember how all the game mag previews kept talking about how great the CG-sequences looked. Also, this being one of the 1st PS2 games EVER,meant that /anything/ was bound to be considered "must-play" & be well-received... However,I recall the /Reviews/ were quite poor(supposedly, the game was more promising-looking in the early-stages everyone was judging it by). Specifically, there was great disappointment that the game didn't change much from the early version to the final-release... EGM,in particular, disliked how scripted the game felt & that it was too linear &/or simple, overall. Mostly, the reviewer complained about how he felt the game should have stayed in development longer. Or,that the developers should have done more with their time, before release,to match what was "promised",or whatever... Also worth mentioning,is that some EGM reviewers were known for being "picky" & overly-expectant of games. Which,is what lead to them having multiple reviewers,later-on. And replacing reviewers, over the years... However,at this time, they were still using the single-reviewer format... To explain how I remember this so well; I used to read LOTS of game mags & I would re-visit them, while looking for info. on various games from yesteryear, that I bought from GameStop. This may sound strange,to the modern gamer. But,since I'm from the pre-internet-age,I enjoy the nostalgia of going thru my old game mags... Anyways, sorry for the length, but hopefully this will be worth reading someday,by those interested in hearing more about "Extermination". I apologize in advance for not putting it in a more "interesting" order. But,I felt it necessary to keep the original flow. Rather, than attempt at editing for conciseness. Also,I'm excessively-thorough/eccentric & despise the lack-of-openness so prevalent w/ comments,at times. Which, has lead to me needing to clarify, rather unnecessarily,I feel. So,hopefully this will prevent that from being requested(I guess)... Sooooo,yeah... ;) -Peace & Hopefully this will be of use 2 /someone/ out-there :)
That Men in Black game is a treasure. I remember how mad similar it was to Resi playing the demo yonks ago. Was so blessed to find out my friend owned the game in 2010. Tiny legs melee combat!
I met the guy who wrote Martian Gothic at a developer's conference called AdventureX a few years ago. I told him that I'd enjoyed playing it as a kid, but he really, *really* didn't want to talk about the game.
Probably one of the most infamous RE clones (at least if you watched X-Play on G4 during the 2000s) was the Des Blood series. A Japan-exclusive series, It had all the trappings of the original RE games, but what made this series different from the other clones was the inclusion of interactive sex scenes with various female characters. And it showed everything.
ESPECIALLY when he brought up deep fear, i didn't expect him to relate it to blue stinger (though I have a special place in my heart for that game haha)
One of my favorite RE clones is T.R.A.G. on PS1. It's bad and stupid, but it's my kind of bad and stupid. Imagine Die Hard with the "KAWAII ANIME" knob cranked to 11.
Before watching this, I was expecting T.R.A.G on the PS1 to make the list which is also a sort of "Resident Evil clone" without the horror Its a weird and obscure game and its worth checking out if you haven't heard of it.
PS1 games where entire gameplay & visual style almost exactly like RE, but no horror element -T.R.A.G (basically Die Hard, but Resident Evil) -Chase The Express(basically Under Siege 2, but Resident Evil) There's also a survival horror party based turn based RPG, titled Kouldeka, which is a prequel to the Shadow Hearts trilogy
I had a Man in Black game on PC that was like survival horror, but I could have sworn it was different than this, BUT I looked around on the net and I guess my memory just changed it, cause there does not seem to be another one.
Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu. A non-localized game. Basically a kamen rider beat em' up game with abandoned building/secret enemy base, narrow hallway, health potions, resident evil type puzzle, and fixed camera angles that changes everytime. I don't really know about the story, cuz it's in japanese, but definitely worth checking out.
Galerians, Martian Gothic, Deep Fear, Blue Stinger (briefly) AND the PS1 MIB all in one video...? I feel like this is aimed specifically at me right now

Hey buddy, this was my introduction to your channel. And I gotta say I'm hooked. I'm a HUGE resi Guy and loved this video. Thanks and subbed!😊
Deep Fear cutscene looked like Pheonix Wright was begging for death from an umbrella soldier lol
insert comment about how alone in the dark was first something something
Alone in the dark the new nightmare was actually a really good game and RE clone.
And don't forget sweet home, the OG of capcom horror.
@@arkdetective
Yep, truly the granddad of survival horror. Of course westerners wouldn't get a taste of that or even know of it's existence for a long time afterwards.
Yes but did you know alone in the dark is the first 3d survival horror game? And the first iteration of modern horror game which also went on to inspire resident evil greatly, i bet you didn't know about that.
@@trickycheat3570 yep and also before alone in the dark inspired them, resident evil 1 was a first person perspective game.
"We've yapped on about Parasite Eve"
That was a great game tho. The first 2 PE games are amazing, the third one sucks.
Agreed! Playing through PE1 at the moment for the first time and it's great (on the small Vita screen). Never did finish PE2 so that's next on the list. PE3....ugh, might play it for completion's sake haha.
When he started talking about MIB I forgot this was about R.E clones.
12:57 Resident Evil meets a child's version of Metal Gear Solid. 😏
Eternal Darkness is true clone of the classic RE.
More of alone in the dark clone
Alone in the Dark did all of this first. Resident Evil is an AitD clone, and Survival Horror existed in Japan since Sweet Home on the Famicom (which also inspired Resident Evil itself).
There's a "devilman" resident evil like videogame that is a bit interesting, I thought it would be cool if you gave it a look later, If you haven't already
It was released only on japan
Resident evil one was inspire from alone in the dark ps1 as Shinji Said
i appreciated the beaumont joke, austin.
MIB has toys, games and a cartoon show. To think that all that came from an unknown 90s indie comic that has like 4 issues only.
What about “Fear Effect” 1&2? You forgot “Fear Effect”... :((
Yes yes yes yes.
It's definitely above average when it comes to being an RE clone.
Some games that get weirder the series went on.
There are more than enough RE clones to have multiple videos cover them.
@@RippahRooJizah true that.
We're supposedly getting a remaster of Fear Effect 1 titled Fear Effect: Reloaded sometime next year.
I haven't thought of Galerians since I played it way back in 1999! May have to dig up my PS1 and give it a replay.
I think you mean Alone in the Dark clones/rip offs
Yes...
this guy survival horrors
@@MiSambra alone in the dark started the trend
I think you mean Sweet Home clones/rip off in ploygonal shape?
@@devastomondiale2241 the gameplay mimicks that of alone in the dark. Not sweet home. Sweet home was what resident evil was gonna be based off of. The game play was inspired by alone in the dark
My first survival horror was something called Alone in the Dark on the 3DO. Looking at it now and how the franchise endee up, I'm glad RE learned from their mistakes.
You can tell it's Will by number of polygons that went into his ears.
Austin, I have been waiting for this one for a long time, the time is now
Always makes me feel weird, when someone who doesn't like tank controls reviews many tank control games.
-Peace
Men in Black scared the ever loving shit out of me as a kid. I first saw It over a mates house at a sleep over and needless to say I didn't sleep ok
Great video as ever. Galerians is even more brazen than people realise when you look at how closely some of its maps mirror the original mansion.
Damn, that horror night at the museum game seems right up my alley.
My heart hurt when you played that PSO Personal Mail sound effect around 7:15
I got whiplash from that Beaumont joke. Good vid as well.
I feel like Deep Fear could work today. It needs a remake.
"May have worked on players in '96 but maybe not now" As I frantically try to do all I can to escape from being murdered by low poly abominations with god awful tank controls while simultaneously having a panic attack
"Resi" This shorthand drives me nuts! 😅
I know right? Everybody knows it's "Rese".
@@ronroidz2925 We call them "Ressa" here lmao.
That Beaumont Texas joke was like a right hook
You talk about Resident Evil knock off but forgot to talk about Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu for PS2
I think he meant Survival Horror games that rip off Resident Evil
Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu does utilize a "Resident Evil" style format of running around in a set environment where the player must traverse the landscape, while picking up necessary items to open locked doors and progress through the stage but that's where the similarities end
I looked it up
I love seeing a new Austin video pop up right when I get off work thanks for making my day
Here's a suggestion. I guess I was too stupid to see it coming.
galerians trailer actually traumatized me when i was a kid
"Ammo wasn't rare, but it was limited."
Uh, what. So it was rare?
Sooooo,yeah... ;)
-Peace & Hopefully this will be of use 2 /someone/ out-there :)
Holy fuck the Beaumont joke got me. My grandma lives there, so I'm acutely aware of the nothingness that is their downtown
God i remember renting that MIB game when it first came out. Never got past the artic.
You could say that Resident Evil is a clone of Alone In The Dark
So it was a hentai game?
I went into this video expecting Carrier for the Dreamcast to be mentioned. Am sad.
Before watching this, I was expecting T.R.A.G on the PS1 to make the list which is also a sort of "Resident Evil clone" without the horror
Its a weird and obscure game and its worth checking out if you haven't heard of it.
PS1 games where entire gameplay & visual style almost exactly like RE, but no horror element
-T.R.A.G (basically Die Hard, but Resident Evil)
-Chase The Express(basically Under Siege 2, but Resident Evil)
There's also a survival horror party based turn based RPG, titled Kouldeka, which is a prequel to the Shadow Hearts trilogy
"Every girl should carry one" is fucking hilarious.
Galerians, Martian Gothic, Deep Fear, Blue Stinger (briefly) AND the PS1 MIB all in one video...? I feel like this is aimed specifically at me right now
As someone who spent 4.5 years getting my undergrad in Beaumont, TX...I approve of Austin's message
