The Fight That Made Larry Holmes Unable to Become No 1 in Boxing History

  • September 1985. No longer a young boxer, Larry Holmes faces his next opponent, Michael Spinks. Although it was his 49th fight for Holmes, this fight was very special for him. The thing is, 35-year-old Larry had won all his 48 fights. He had beaten many strong and famous fighters, including Muhammad Ali, who won the champion's belt and had not lost once in his professional career. Still, he had one more aim, maybe, the highest aim for any heavyweight in the history of boxing: Rocky Marciano's record. The great boxer of the past had not lost a single fight, and he had 49 of them. Larry Holmes was one step away from repeating the legendary record. He needed to win one more fight, but he was matched with a formidable opponent, Michael Spinks, who had not lost a single fight in his career either. It was the fight of the year.

The way you say Holmes beat Ali leads you to think It was a fair fight. Not even once did you metion that Ali was sick and old

You're all right and I'll explain why we did that. In this video we decided not to dwell on Ali's problems because the previous video (This is How Mike Tyson Avenged His Idol Muhammad Ali!) covered the Holmes vs Ali fight in great detail.

The fight between Holmes and Ali was a fair fight. People always discredit Holmes for humbling Ali. It was Ali's choice to step into the ring again. He didn't have to do it no matter how much he was influenced by the people around him. If Ali would have somehow won that fight, or was even competitive, you wouldn't be saying it wasn't fair. It didn't matter if Ali was the best 38 year old boxer he could ever be. Holmes was going to brutally defeat Ali in that fight regardless. I don't even believe a 28 year old Ali could have beaten the 1980 version of Holmes. That's how great Holmes was. Holmes was at the peak of his powers from 1978-1984. Even Ali at his absolute prime would have had a lot of trouble beating prime Larry Holmes. It would have been a close fight for sure. There was no way for Ali to win that fight, just like there was no way for Holmes to defeat a young Mike Tyson despite still being great at 38 years old. Holmes did to Ali what Ali did to Sonny Liston.

@@donavonhoward114 not really, Ali at his best would give Holmes plenty of hell. Even a prime Holmes was easy to hit, prime Ali wasn't. I see Ali at his best winning a close decision over Holmes, say 9-6

    1985 of September not 1995...
1985 is when this fight took place...

Thank you for noticing the error. In the text of this video it was written all right - 1985, but the person who voiced it, unfortunately, got it all wrong

Holmes could win and repeat Marciano's unbeaten record. At least if you consider just the results, that would make him number 1 in boxing

@@evanbarr9270 Most likely, you just did not understand what I meant by my previous comment. Simply put, if Holmes had won, he would have repeated Marciano's record (49-0). At the time, everyone was talking and writing about it. A record that only Floyd Mayweather could break years later.
If Holmes had beaten Spinks, he would have been #1 in a sense and all because of Marciano's record. Unfortunately for Holmes and fortunately for Spinks, the latter didn't let it happen.
