If Khmers didn’t use coconut milk, how did archeologists uncover cooking tools and ingredients to suggest that we have in the areas that were part of the Funan empire, the empire that many historians believe to be the very first Khmer empire? The findings were published July 2023 titled “Earliest curry in Southeast Asia and the global spice trade 2000 years ago”. They found spices commonly used in curry and they also found coconuts on a mortar. Researchers said the spice were similar to how curry is made in South Asia, but the difference is the use of coconut milk. From the paper: “Today, curry is still popular in Southeast Asia, and the ingredients recovered from Oc Eo are matched more closely in modern Southeast Asia than in South Asia in being mixed with endemic spices and thickened by coconut milk.” Also, this is the first site where they found galanga. It’s a good idea to read up on actual archaeological evidence published by specialists working in the field and not sprouting unbased claims picked up from unreliable sources.
