    Loved the final remarks that we need to assume positive intent when dealing with each other. It seems the community turned unnecessarily toxic in such a short time and we recently dropped a video about it. We always say collect what you love and love what you collect.

    You final comments on the state of this hobby is “right on”. I’ve been collecting for over 45 years now & it has been tough lately to enjoy this hobby. However, your talk inspired me to keep my perspective on how I s/ still enjoy my comic collecting & stay positive.👍

      TBH, if you've been collecting for 45 years you have multiples of all.the major keys when they were till affordable. I got my FF1,5,48, Batman 1 (only 0.5 but blue label), Xmen 1, showcase 8 & 22, etc. Decadea ago.

      @@davidsamuelson2388 Yes, I got Silver and Bronze Age keys but very little Golden Age. I concentrated on DC runs like Atom, Flash. GL, Showcase, etc. but some Marvel like X-Men, FF 4, etc., but lacking some Spider-Man keys as well as other issues. It is only now they were affordable by today’s standard, but didn’t seem so when I was purchasing collections. I was also earning a lot less in the late 70s &80s. Sounds like you have a nice collection.

      @@Kurenai1819 we are probably close to the same age I was simply lucky and save some money at the time because even books like X-Men 1 weren't all that expensive. I remember a lot of Bronze Age Marvel back in the '80s was you know pennies if that to the dollar as they sell today. I remember picking up multiple copies of Hulk 181 all over the place for $50 to $200 and generally they ranged in grade from anywhere from about a five all the way up to well past 9.0. Also I dos apmw research a.d get lucky qken others shifted to vroanze and many left gold to pursue silver I wmet hard as could be ono.gold. batman I got in the early 90s for cash a.d anloybfpntraded books (those Hulk 181s and other braonze keys that I had multiple.copies). I would never be able to afford these keys at the prices they are today, people paying $15 - $20,000 for a fantastic four five in a 2.0. I remember when anything like under 2.0 was considered to be worthless by the collecting community. Some books of course are outliers to that, I'd collect any Batman 1, Superman 1, Marvel family one, and some serious Golden Age books in a 0.5 every day of the week. Because they're just aren't many of them anymore you know?

      @@davidsamuelson2388 I had collected comics from 1st issues, I sold them all in 1979 for good money because I lost interest.
      I lost interest because they had Frank Miller do Daredevil and I hate Frank Miller.
      They canceled the x-men then they promised to bring them back but it was Dave Cockrums Legion of superheroes, it's like taking the Fantastic Four and replacing them with different characters and still calling it the Fantastic Four.

    One other notable thing about Thor 165 -- the word "HIM!" appears to have been rendered with a premade font, rather than hand-lettered. This is extremely unusual for a Silver Age Marvel comic.

    Good stuff. I also like Iron Fist 14 as a spec book. If you enjoy reading comics I would highly recommend reader copies of Iron Fist 1 - 15. John Byrne's art is as good and in some ways better than his X-Men run. They are just cool smash up stories. Number 11 he faces the Wrecking Crew, 12 Captain America, 13 Boomerang, 14 Sabertooth and 15 an X-Men crossover (including Wolverine's Shi'ar/Fang) costume. Thanks Drew.

      Hi Brooklyn. Unfortunately, that’s just what the series is called. No pressure to buy any or everything from me. The original intent was to help identify for collectors the books that were either showing or had the potential to price themselves out of reach in the near term. Over my years of selling books at shows and conventions there has traditionally seemed to be a breaking point between $300-$500 where collectors hit a ceiling of what they’re will/able to spend. The hope was that it would be of benefit to the community in case a book or books members were interested in were sneaking up in value under their radar so the collector could 1. Be aware and 2. Reprioritize what they were looking for if they were on the cusp of missing out on a book they would like to pick up.

      @@CoMoComicBooks No need to defend yourself, we just have different takes. "Before it's too late" is FOMO, unless you are talking about blue chip silver and golden age. Most books will likely drop in value or interest or both. People should just buy what they want and stop thinking in terms of comics as stocks. Then you can't lose. I was a dealer and for every person who crowed about some great purchase I could point out 5 others books that they bought that tanked. Collectors are like gamblers: they remember their wins, deny away the losses. It's why we dealers remain SELLERS of books. Because overall we win by selling. That means most speculators lose.
      I was a baseball card dealer in the 80s. The baseball card market was gutted by speculators. People without any real interest in cards buying solely to speculate. You can still buy 1988 baseball cards set for the SAME 1988 price! The hobby in ruins to this day.
      We need people who actually want to read the books who are then pleasantly surprised years later to learn that some of them have value.

      Not in a while. That book moves really well (high demand) So most vendors will price it aggressively, because they know the supply at any given show is likely lower than the number of people looking for it. IF14 and X-men 101 are similar in that way.

    NM 98 has been out of control forever in 9,8. Lers be honest, for a book that was bought by the ton vs by the book, immediately bagged & boarded by everyone, you consider almost $2K or more "in the basement"?

    • @CoMoComicBooks
      @CoMoComicBooks  2 роки тому

      For that one I was more considering raw values. The 9.6/9.8s have maintained somewhat. But the main thing is that I can see demand starting to increase for it, which tends to have an upward effect on price, even with the supply that is out there on NM98. Deadpool is a character that connects with younger/newer audiences that could easily come into the hobby to drive the demand.

      Michael, I know what I’m doing is just being more selective in what I buy. Purchasing volume has come way down for me, but that’s mostly because I put a pause on selling early this year. It was a perfect storm of higher overhead (gas, hotels, etc) and lower sales prices due to the market correcting. I have the luxury of being able to do that since comics aren’t my primary source of income. I may have also went hard on the buying this spring and early summer, picking up several collections that I’m still processing. But there does come a time where you just need to generate revenue, so even if you may be losing money or selling at a tighter margin, having money is worth more than having books on occasion.

      It’s a fantastically kooky indi comic from the early 90s! Scud is the protagonist’s name, it’s not an acronym or anything like that, at least that I’m aware of.

    It makes sense for Thor 165 because everybody is unloading mid grade Marvel bronze, because there are so very many of them out there and those books will never hold value -- they're going to continue the downward trend. If you're shooting for Marvel bronze, you have to go over 9.2, or you're wasting your money. There won't be any Market if you ever try to move that thing, especially after the movies are out of people's minds.

      Agreed. Thor 165 is still a silver age book though, so it’s a bit more forgiving in mid-grade. Thanks for watching David!

    The mistake was when every hobbyist took the high margins and created an uncontrollable market. People have no idea they lived in a covid bubble 🫧. High highs come with low lows. It’s not even that low atm compared to before covid but there is less demand because there is no bubble and endless handouts of cash to stimulate the economy. I’d be happy if you get anything close to covid prices. You won’t see them again for a long time, sure some books will increase but slowly not like the spikes you have become accustomed to.

      People also don't want to realize the fact that anything but Gold & early Silver age is an unstable and highly speculative Market. Very few books are ever going to be able to maintain values and I would bet that you will never see, outside of a handful of True Blue Chip books, prices like the incredible highs of 2 years ago. That was the market to selll.into, not buy.

    • @CoMoComicBooks
      @CoMoComicBooks  2 роки тому +1

      Indeed. It was an unprecedented run in the market. Speculation by nature is a risk game and as David mentioned, the further you play outside of the proven material, where books have long established levels of elevated value, the more risk you’re incurring.

    Money must be burning a hole in your pocket if you think it’s recovering in the next month

      Definitely not burning a hole, and I fully understand the state of the world right now, but pivoting to quality over quantity to maximize the dollars that are still in that expendable income bucket or comic budget is a common approach. As always, I’m not telling anyone to buy anything, just pointing out opportunities and good values where I see them, along with some fun books as well.

      There is a number of things honestly. It seems like the C2E2 hubbub was the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back, but there have been numerous things that were just simmering for a while.
