One of the best parts about their music is that you will keep finding new things you never noticed the first 100 times you heard the song. Some will also take on new meaning as you, yourself, grow and change over time. They're timeless. 🤘

June 2001, I walk into a FYE music store before my shift at The Cheesecake Factory and they had like 20 or so albums up on the wall with headphones to listen to them before you buy. I see the new Tool album and think the cover art is bizarre yet cool. I toss on the headphones and listen to The Grudge as the album opener. I proceeded to stand there and listen to this whole song thinking it was the best fucking thing I ever heard. Their preceding Aenima album is great but this was just a whole different level of a different kind of awesomeness. I listened to the song 3 times since I couldn’t pause or rewind. I walked in late to my shift because of this song! After I made enough money in tips, I ran over to the store to buy it so it couldn’t sell out. I couldn’t stop listening to it over and over. One of the best songs ever in my humble opinion and I love watching others react to it imagining myself the first time I heard it in that FYE store in 2001. Great reaction!
Anyone giving you crap should remember that, at one point they discovered Tool and were on the first stage of their journey. This is the first stage of YOUR journey. Plenty of good people here to properly guide you. I discovered Tool Live in 1993 and I get to RE-discover them again “vicariously” through you. So do your thing. Spiral out !!!!!
Yes! No music videos, just music, and read through the lyrics afterwards. I wouldn't say there's so much disdain for holding a grudge, more of an acknowledgement of how dreadfully hard it can be to release resentment even though we know the "right" thing to do is let go. Love the lyrics "Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold." This album is awesome because coming from their previous works, you see an evolution of anger and dispair, then in Aenima, anger but also deeper introspection, and in Lateralus, much more introspection and taking responsibility. I see Lateralus as peak Tool, where they really took off in consciousness and made something different from any other band I can think of.
This song can be considered the fulcrum point of Tool's general emotional state and messaging in their music. Prior to this track, there's quite a lot of anger, angst, rage, disappointment, and sarcasm in their music mixed in with moments of clarity, beauty, and introspection. Afterwards, esp the rest of the Lateralus album (save for one song Ticks & Leeches which IMO should have come directly after the grudge in the track list but is a bit later), is much more about finding peace, balance, personal growth, and essentially a path towards enlightenment. Btw, if you're going to continue with Lateralus album, you have to listen to Parabol+Parabola together, and Disposition-Reflection-Triad together.
@@nickforell1Hell yeah! Gotta check out Ticks and Leeches if you want a good, angry song. It seems to me to be a companion to The Patient. It's the wearing thin of the patience of the previous song (The Patient). Also, Lateralis is the one people are referencing when they say "Spiral out". That is a must listen to, if you really want to experience more of what they are capable of. Love the videos, keep it up. P.S. Also, totally agree with the suggestions of the above poster. Ahhhh Let the ass kicking begin!....Truly one of the top TooL tracks and a lead off on the album Lateralus.....for a reason, it sets the tone, Aenima, the album before this and Undertow, the debut are filled with anger and angst, (Maynard and the band were maturing with each album) they kick off Lateralus with this explosion of a song, wise lyrically and a monster musically, Danny Carey put the world of drumming on notice with this one....but the key is the lyric(s) "Let go, Let it go" because the rest of the album settles in as the most heart felt, life lessoned, life mantra of all time, a true masterpiece!!! No Tool fan will complain about pausing. Besides - you do you and how you deem fit to react. Tool is a lot to take in and everybody needs its own way to do so. You are on an amazing journey.
I've been looking for reactors like you for a long time and for some reason you didn't hit the algorithm for me until recently. In the beginning of the video you seem like some comments might have hurt your feelings or maybe those corrections were just that important to you. I'll say that as long as you seem interested in the music, and the individuals that create the music, people will love to watch your reactions. I've seen later reactions, so I know that your knowledge gradually improves, but I think it's important to say that Tool fans really love seeing completely raw reactions as well. You did nothing wrong, and we're happy you took the time to do this.
I remember being on break from work, ripping open the CD fresh from its release, and hearing this tune for the first time. Everyone's opinions will differ, but to me, Lateralus is my favourite Tool album. Good to see you, Nick!
Just discovered your channel brother and subscribed. Huge 30 year long love affair with Tool. Your reactions are great. Love seeing a new Tool fan being born. Yes it’s awesome to watch time and time again. The great thing about our interpretations is other than the foundation of the songs meaning, that we read it in infinite ways. Which, just like the music is beautiful. Thank you brother. Keep it going!
Don't worry about the lame people that want to control or hear someone say what they want to hear. I prefer honest reactions in whatever form works for you. Keep it up, spiral out! Also your interpretation was spot on. It's all about letting go of grudges if you want to move on and grow. Otherwise, the grudge can control you in an attempt to maintain the illusion that you are in control. Many of Tool songs are about self reflection and improvement but written vaguely to let you interpret it how you will in your own experiences
I'm a huge Tool fan and I watched a bunch of their reaction videos and then I started to see this band Jinjer pop up into my feed alot more. I could continue on and on about this band but you need to experience .JINJER PISCES THE LIVE SESSION
Your doing awesome. Love the reactions. I have listen to Tool since the 90s. The Moto of the band is “think for yourself”. Sometimes Tool Army needs to be reminded that that is a 2 way street and we need to allow ours to think for themselves and have a different take on things%
Tool was my favorite band for YEARS before I actually knew the guy's names. I was going with MJK's thing - which is - enjoy the art - don't worship the artists. Nick - just do what do - don't stress the haters ....
The last 100 or so seconds are what I think of whenever this fucked up world really gets to me. My favorite TOOL song and opener to the greatest album ever made. Over two decades later it still floors me.....🤯
I just discovered your channel and I rarely leave comments but I just have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying you listening to Tool songs for the first time. This is the next best thing to listening to them for the first time again myself. Their music is truly a spiritual experience for me. I just want to second everyone saying that this is your channel and you can pause for commentary as many times as you need to. That’s really why I’m here and not just listening to them directly. I look forward to hearing more of your impressions of Tool and other artists!
I grew up listening to Tool thru high school, Just imagine waiting 5 yrs for a new album to drop and this is the first song you heard to start it off. 😱
I think the entire song is about the process of "letting go." Like "Lateralus." The music has that little riff that's like the grudge itself. Adam, Danny, and Justin take turns within the song repeating it, as it's a part of oneself. Lyrically Maynard's fighting against it. It's really hard to let go! And I'm not convinced the Grudge didn't win at the end--even after the 25-sec scream.
@@nickforell1its ok when i first heard this song i needed a bucket and a sponge... One of my all time favourites of any band or genre ever. I used to hold grudges for some horrific shit done to me and those i care about. Without trying to sound like a dick this song this album this band helped me learn things about myself and the world around me. Tools music is exactly that a tool. To be used to enrich ones own life and encourage the listener to live learn and grow. Great reaction dana would be proud... Sorry couldnt resist 😝
The last section from just prior to the scream until the very end is one of, if not the most epic ending to a song. And yes, that scream is not manufactured in a studio with effects. He performs it the same way live.
Keep in mind - not one Tool fan will ever be bothered by you stopping and taking up substantial time. We are in it for the long haul, as you’ll see with many of their epic songs 😂❤
I like your detailed analysis of the lyrics. Musically Tool is amazing, the level of complexity and perfection from each band member is top notch. The next level that some tool fans miss out on is the message. Every song has a message to the listener and every message is either to point out something you need to overcome or how to mature mentally, emotionally and ultimately become your best self. Tool is life. How can you not love a "front man" that at the concert stands behind the band, without a spotlight, so you can experience the music and message. The message is more important...
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction, u had some great insights into the song and reacted at some key points the way i did. Cant wait for the next one mate.
Some Tool fans take things way to serious. Don't stress them and enjoy the journey. Been a fan since seeing them In a small club in 92. They don't take themselves that serious.
Hey! I want to stand by your song interpretations. Any song goes through one's personal filter. What you or anyone gets out of a first- or anytime listen is 100% legit. No apology nec. Damn those comment monkeys!
Dude. You are doing a great job expanding your music knowledge and, I am enjoying watching it. DO NOT LISTEN to tool nazis. People who expect you to know shit you cant know w/o the same education they had are assholes. You are doing the work. Keep it up. I promise they will keep watching even if it is just to hate watch. Bask in the joy that someone who wants you to know this music so badly will criticize you for getting to know said music in the same way they did. One song at a time. Outstanding job sir.
The reason they didn't put lyrics in the cd booklets was because they wanted you to listen to the music first. And they said what ever you get from listening to the music is right, emotions and reaction...no wrong answers, if you will. It's all your interpretation and yours alone.🤘
I love the immediate reactions. I've been a Tool fan for so long, I cannot remember the first listen to any of their songs. I remember more of my reactions to the more recent Fear Inoculum album, but even that has been a few years and now I know every note of Adam's solos and every beat of Danny's percussion. My immediate reactions are clouded by the intimate knowledge I've gained of the songs and their meanings (to me). I'd love to see a video of me listening to these songs for the first time all those years ago. That's where you come in, Nick Forell. It is really fun to see ourselves through your experience. Keep doing exactly what you're doing. It's fun and entertaining content. Also, I'm sure you've already been directed by the Tool fans to watch the video of DANNY (not Dana) Carey playing the song "Pneuma" live on stage. It's mind-blowing to see how he can play polyrhythms on all four limbs at the same time. Check it out if you haven't already.
I appreciate you, hearing them for the first time and being apart of something as deep as Tool and their fans. I love seeing genuine reaction to the music that we love so much. Tool fans are a different breed as you are learning so is the music. Don’t let the negativity for simple mistakes get you down. I appreciate you trying and learning.
That moment Maynard lets go of the grudge he's been holding for all these years lol. Almost wished you started doing a full album reaction of the Aenima album first, as Lateralus is sort of an evolutionary follow up on the themes explored during the previous album.
For any musicians out there, or anyone who finds Tool's time signatures interesting, check out my active drum transcription of Tool's The Grudge: ua-cam.com/play/PLeaK9tcJzll2pj2Qvt19EXZuQCXWXzYwH.html .
So good, glad you dig it too! I know The Pot or even Sober or another single from Undertow is more "beginner friendly" but for my 💰 this is pinnacle Tool. This 1 track shows every member's strength and the song is dope af too.
I’m probably way late here, but you mention the art work… if you are able in whatever capacity, you have to check out each albums packaging… this one (Lateralus) was as a CD with the cover being a compilation of many pages with different portions of the human anatomy and spirit coming together as one that you see as the cover art. Alex grey a true visionary… Aenima had old school 3d cover glass that made each page of the booklet come alive with motion, 10,000 days had glasses that you looked through revealing amazing 3D images in each page, and the newest CD has literally a small (rechargeable) lcd screen that plays a 5 minute ominous video with sound… it’s incredible the amount of thought that goes into every aspect of this once in a lifetime band. Love your reactions so far brother, Ren, Falling in reverse etc. Get in some Sleep Token as well you’ll be presently surprised I promise. Spiral Out my brother!! Keep up the good work!!
He hee, I had a good laugh at your reactions, because, actually, I can see how you get hooked with this band, minute by minute, with no power to resist them. Yes, I bet you never heard something like that before, and you never will, at least not too soon. I first heard Tool in a video game played by an ex boyfriend, 16 years ago, the songs were Parabol/Parabola. I have never heard anything like that before, so I just searched all of their music, live shows, information, I almost know all of their albums by heart. It's hard to explain everything this band did for me, musically and mentally. But I can relate to your amazed reactions. :)) Yeah, Tool is a phenomenon, and I heard this reactions on musicians who have deep musical studies, here in Romania. My rock band friends are all fascinated by Tool's music. Some of them had to go other countries to see them live, so...
While there are many people in the TθθL Army who are genial, there are some bad apples among us who would label your interpretations “wrong.“ Your interpretations are yours, and they reflect what you take from the art you consume. Feel free to feel what you feel, hear what you hear, and express what you express. Spiral out 😌🙏
First song I fell in love with by them so glad you finally got around to it, awesome reaction Nick and may your Tool journey spiral out and keep going sir! 🌀🔥
interpretations are great and why we watch reactions i think my friend. Love that you did this one. One of my favorites. Descending is also equally amazing. This song lyrics helped me so much. Im also a capricorn which the song is loosely written for or about not that i believe much in astrology but i found it interestingly relatable. Its about karma for the most part. And choosing the one or the ten. "choose to.... let this go" powerful the way he repeats it.
One thing about Tool and whatever message you can take from it starts with being confident in yourself and being able to develop your own thoughts and beliefs off of what you can perceive, no apologies needed for what you wanna do or what you believe is necessary 🤟🤟🤟 spiral out, keep going
Perfect analysis of the song well done … I also love the “ cold and faded anchor part” the imagery is amazing on that… the anchor represents the grudge you hold onto letting it drag and hold you down (stagnant) cannot move until you let the grudge go… let the waters transmutate.. what i got from that it is if you just let things go let things flow naturally you’ll come out the other side a better person but also gold and other crystals (minerals) are formed from water ( waves) crashing against rock so if you just LET THINGS BE you’ll find gold ( a better you, better outcome) of the situation.
I like your reactions. Tool fans are very passionate about their music and they take the lyrics very seriously. That being said I don't expect you to get the message completely right the first time around. If I or anybody else has come down kind of hard, my apologies. You can't ask for us to be easy on though and call Danny Carey Dana 3 times. Also Maynard is pronounced May-nerd before people give you shit about that too.
9:33 - In other genres, I feel like Massive Attack gave as much 'push' to exploration in terms of trip hop, if you get any more exploratory you're probably looking at drum n bass (Goldie, Photek, Source Direct, etc.).
Yeah, do what you will. Experience for you. That 4/4 break in the middle is one of my favorite Tool moments. But, as they say, your favorite Tool song is the Tool song you're currently listening to. Keep going. Spiral out.
Saturn's cycle is about 27 years. Which also represents the age we reach maturity. He was going for 27 seconds. The stone is not only something that weighs you down but is also a reference to the philosopher's stone from Alchemy. Which was sought to transmute metal, usually lead (as in leaden anchor ⚓️), into gold. The choose 1 or 10 has something to do with absolutes from numerology. But I don't know what that means. Probably something about opposite extremes.
Nick, your Tool reactions are awesome. I think you need to revisit more Tool, like Eulogy or Jambi - and did you ever watch the Pneuma drum cam? Also you should check out Puscifer- i think you'll dig the Humbling River, Momma Sed, and Potions.
Like you said on the Acid Rock scene as it relates to classic rock: keep in mind Tool was doing all of this at the height of the Grunge Rock era. Being different has been their stamp. That is why you cant compare them to others. That said, they have influenced so many modern musicians its unreal.
Solid interpretations-I did a quick glance at the comments and I’m not sure if anyone suggested that you check out Danny Carey’s live performance of Pnuema. It’s witnessing true mastery and instrumental virtuosity. If not for a reaction video (although it would be a good one), for your own enjoyment 😁!
Nick Tool is an instrument with function. It fits in everyone's hand. Maynard never forces an agenda, but he leads on a journey that can be wherever you feel. And you mean Danny, not Dana. No one matches Tool and the crazy thing is Maynard has two other bands active A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer none sounding like the others At the clinax of this song Maynard does a twenty-five-second long scream.
0:36 I love that you said that clearly, consisely, and fuck anybody else. I'm in a weird nebulous space where nobody expects that I haven't seen different video games before and I'm glad to see you stand up for yourself that way. anyway here's NOT wonderwall. here's the longest full-breath scream I've ever heard
I like being able to see an aspect I wouldn't have seen, that's the whole reason for listening to people's opinions instead of just shutting them down or saying they are wrong. It's like that meme where one guy says 6 and the other says 9 but they are standing on opposite ends so they are both right (from their position). Except for Tool there could be 40 ways to "see" each song. I even disagree with myself sometimes, on subsequent listens.
I'm sorry people are really beating you up over your Tool reactions - who cares? I saw the video for Sober back in the mid 1990s and was moderately interested. Then I was driving on Evans Ave in Denver in 1997 and heard Forty Six & 2 on the radio. I was blown away and in love with Tool since then. The point is that everyone's musical journey is their own and it starts somewhere. Don't apologize for it - just put yourself in a vulnerable position and embrace it. I actually like it when you stop the song and comment periodically on your thoughts. Thank you for doing these and see them live - it's a visual and audio feast!!
Hey, as some have said - don’t stress about your reactions. You can’t please everyone all the time, especially Tool fans. Just do your thing! 😊

This was the track that got me obsessed. Unbelievably good
The last 100 or so seconds are what I think of whenever this fucked up world really gets to me. My favorite TOOL song and opener to the greatest album ever made. Over two decades later it still floors me.....🤯
Well, I'm very glad I started with this
I just discovered your channel and I rarely leave comments but I just have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying you listening to Tool songs for the first time.
Thank you so much. I’m really glad you’re enjoying the journey
When I was 18 Schism reeled me in, The Grudge got me hooked! One of my favorite all time albums.
Did Maynard and Danny melt your face with that scream and ending solo? Yes, yes they did.
Missing a nose
Oooo The Grudge! Haven't started it yet, but I'm excited.
You do you Nick
Thank you Adam, I enjoyed your insight!
Also its Danny Carey!
This my favorite Tool song. So happy to see you react to this. Great job. Very genuine reaction
Glad you enjoyed it Jason, I appreciate that!
Would love to see you do Wings For Marie 1 & 2
I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction, u had some great insights into the song and reacted at some key points the way i did. Cant wait for the next one mate.
One of the best songs in their discography! Thanks for the reaction!
Alex Grey did the cover art. He’s done a lot of art for Tool.
And painted Maynard before some live shows!
Some Tool fans take things way to serious. Don't stress them and enjoy the journey. Been a fan since seeing them In a small club in 92. They don't take themselves that serious.
This song was my favourite of all time for a decade. Still a great song for sure 🤟
Can’t wait to see the reaction to Parabol/Parabola. Buckle up!!
Can't wait!
Hey! I want to stand by your song interpretations. Any song goes through one's personal filter. What you or anyone gets out of a first- or anytime listen is 100% legit. No apology nec. Damn those comment monkeys!
well said
Thanks but definitely nice to hear from y’all on context I didn’t have
There are as much way of listening to Tool and feel their music than there are humans, that's why we love them.
Thanks for your react
Wow thank you for this. I really appreciate it
The reason they didn't put lyrics in the cd booklets was because they wanted you to listen to the music first.
It’s Danny Carey
*Dana carvey
Yeah! I was thinking Dana Carvey haha
@@nickforell1 knew it. No way was that a coincidence.
Your opinion is never wrong, just like everyone else’s. Songs, especially Tool song, are interpreted by their listeners. Enjoy the ride.
The ride shall be enjoyed!
"The original exists, if you want to listen to it all the way through."
That is the most polite way ever, of saying DBAA. Subbed!
Oh, and speaking of Grey's anatomy and the art for that album, the artist's name is "Alex Grey" and he pretty prolific in that art style.
So good, glad you dig it too! I know The Pot or even Sober or another single from Undertow is more "beginner friendly" but for my 💰 this is pinnacle Tool. This 1 track shows every member's strength and the song is dope af too.
Well said! Thanks Matthew
Fear inoculum will a heck of a ride, brother. The themes are insane, and Tool as a band have peaked here.
Some lyricists can spit bars, but only Maynard spits one syllable across 18 bars
Some of them had to go other countries to see them live, so...
you're spot on. I've often thought Tool is the Pink Floyd of my generation, but somehow...differently adaptive
While there are many people in the TθθL Army who are genial, there are some bad apples among us who would label your interpretations “wrong.“
Your interpretations are yours, and they reflect what you take from the art you consume. Feel free to feel what you feel, hear what you hear, and express what you express.
Spiral out 😌🙏
Spiral out! 🌀 keep going on your tool journey!
That's the plan!
Yup. This is on my top 5. A top 5 that has taken me years to come up with. But what an outro right? Fire! Danny is the shit!
thanks for the honest reaction and thoughts.. spiral out !! keep going !!
Absolutely love this song. I like it enough that I spent the time to learn most of the song on guitar. Your making want to get the guitar back out.
First song I fell in love with by them so glad you finally got around to it, awesome reaction Nick and may your Tool journey spiral out and keep going sir! 🌀🔥
Awesome! Thank you!
Wait until you listen to this track after thousands of times, it somehow gets better, like wtf! 😂 🤘🏻🌀
Oh I’ve already listened to it a few more times. Brilliant!
And More Tool please 😁🤘🏻🌀
Rocking out, like it’s the first time I heard it. When i actually first heard it 22 years ago….
Rocking out, like it’s the first time I heard it. When i actually first heard it 22 years ago….
interpretations are great and why we watch reactions i think my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for that insight!
One thing about Tool and whatever message you can take from it starts with being confident in yourself and being able to develop your own thoughts and beliefs off of what you can perceive, no apologies needed for what you wanna do or what you believe is necessary 🤟🤟🤟 spiral out, keep going
Yeah, that's the plan! Thanks Brandon
Big tool fan here and you’re doing great! Love watching you react!
Awesome! Thank you Tim!
Damn, yes thank you!
You're thinking Dana Carvey lol
That’s 100p what I was thinking
I like your reactions. Tool fans are very passionate about their music and they take the lyrics very seriously. That being said I don't expect you to get the message completely right the first time around. If I or anybody else has come down kind of hard, my apologies.
You can't ask for us to be easy on though and call Danny Carey Dana 3 times. Also Maynard is pronounced May-nerd before people give you shit about that too.
Thanks for the tips at the end there haha
9:33 - In other genres, I feel like Massive Attack gave as much 'push' to exploration in terms of trip hop, if you get any more exploratory you're probably looking at drum n bass (Goldie, Photek, Source Direct, etc.).
in addition to subbing to Tool on youtube, everyone should try to see them live if able this fall. just throwin that out there, cuz Tool. 😀
all the comments about Danny on his drumming, someone show this man the Pneuma live drum cam video. it is now a must as your next tool reaction heh.
Do your thing! Thanks man!
Yeah, do what you will. Experience for you. That 4/4 break in the middle is one of my favorite Tool moments. But, as they say, your favorite Tool song is the Tool song you're currently listening to. Keep going. Spiral out.
Well said!
That’s so damn cool
Love your Tool-reactions! ✨🔥
More to come! Thanks!
This is by far Tool's best imo, the entire album is so intense
Nick, your Tool reactions are awesome. I think you need to revisit more Tool, like Eulogy or Jambi - and did you ever watch the Pneuma drum cam? Also you should check out Puscifer- i think you'll dig the Humbling River, Momma Sed, and Potions.
Like you said on the Acid Rock scene as it relates to classic rock: keep in mind Tool was doing all of this at the height of the Grunge Rock era. Being different has been their stamp. That is why you cant compare them to others.
That said, they have influenced so many modern musicians its unreal.
Great point about the grunge era colliding with this. Thanks Taylor!
I'm in a weird nebulous space where nobody expects that I haven't seen different video games before and I'm glad to see you stand up for yourself that way.
anyway
here's NOT wonderwall. here's the longest full-breath scream I've ever heard
do your thing bro. keep going. Tool is special.
True Tool Army fans will never rip on new enthusiasts. We love people discovering what some of us have been listening to for 30+ years. Keep it up.
Fantastic fans
I like being able to see an aspect I wouldn't have seen, that's the whole reason for listening to people's opinions instead of just shutting them down or saying they are wrong. It's like that meme where one guy says 6 and the other says 9 but they are standing on opposite ends so they are both right (from their position). Except for Tool there could be 40 ways to "see" each song. I even disagree with myself sometimes, on subsequent listens.
Just be you……#toolarmy will 👁🌀🔥 all the songs relate to the album cover.
DANNY! Not Dana
Still a great video, sorry I didn't put that with it.
And May-nerd, not May-Nard. Lol
Haha I’d be shouting too
Yep thank you!
Descending is my favourite gotta give it a try
I've always felt that the closet band to Tool is Pink Floyd. They both are experimental and push the limits during their own time.
The grudge is an awesome song. You did a good job on this song. Do Vicarious, i relate to that song so much. Think everyone does a little bit.
One KEY thing to remember when reacting to Tool songs, have steel skin and enjoy! *(Danny)*
Sage advice...no shit.
