Hi, the springs are compression springs, they need to be about 65mm long and an internal diameter of 8mm or bigger, mine are actually 16mm in diameter. The spring wire I used was 1.3mm od, I'm sure thinner would work just as well.
Just watched a couple of your videos and like them very much. It's nice to see a poster who doesn't have a 4000 square foot shop with every tool ever made. Like your approach.
This is Jonathan, not Racheal. I was thinking that tension springs could be used underneath to pull the sliding bit down rather than pushing it. Might be easier although not so neat I guess ?
Hi Simon thanks for helping me with wire, but can you please tell me the size of the 4 countersunk screws that secure lift to base plate as my calipers are very old and not accurate any more many thanks😊
Thank you. As a 70 year old lady I’m not sure about making springs. Do you have a length and suggestion what they would be called in a retail setting. Lift is on my trim router like yours. PS I’m based in New Zealand and love your way of explaining things .

would that work on a plunge router? they all ready have springs, would those springs need to be taken off? It might cheap but it does work, as seen; l have thought about just using a threaded bar with a coupler and a allen key headed bolt.
There are quite a few videos on UA-cam about using a plunge router converted into a router lift, the lift I used is pretty cheap, it's already got me wondering if I should upgrade to a high quality one it does work, for casual use, it's just not like using a quality tool, but better than nothing. The lift I used is for trim routers only.
Did u call those springs compression springs ?? what was the wire size of the springs u opened up to make the new springs mate? Could I buy a certain type of wire for that on a roll?? The springs at 1st I didn't thin I needed but I'm seeing more and more ppl online now talking about the same issue.. Great job btw. I will be using ur idea too. I bought one of these lifts months back but haven't build my router table yet..
They are about 1mm thick, I've only ever repurposed springs and have never seen the wire on sale, To be honest I think mine are a little too thick, I sort of collect hardware as I like taking things apart! And yes they are compression springs

Well that was an eye opener for me. I didn't know that a spring could be re modelled so easily. Thanks for posting.
When I was first shown this about 30 years ago I was apprised as well, it's a good trick to know. :-) 😀

Thankyou. Will try those. Love your fold up router table. You have some good practical ways of doing things. @@DIYTinkerer
I love the spring mid for the router lift. I have just purchased the lift and will pick up some springs. do you have the OD of the wire ?

Re Wire: If you search for 'spring steel wire' you should be able to find a supplier
hi, maybe you can add somme gravity easely with weight :)
I used springs in the end, I have a video on my channel about how I made the springs if you are interested 😀
