Regarding your exposure issue, you can change the Natural Live View setting to do things like remove the influence of the film simulations. There's also 'Preview Exp in manual mode' settings. Both are in the Screen Settings area of the menu.
I did read somewhere that the X-T5 has worse rolling shutter than the X-T4, as the higher resolution takes longer to scan. But I shoot almost entirely in electronic shutter with my X-T5 and only notice an issue on very fast moving things (vans speeding right in front of me etc). But you get no rolling shutter if you use mechanical shutter.
My only problems with my X-T5 have been that the shutter release button and focus mode (S/C/M) switch got a bit stiff, but some silicone lubricant fixed that (I use silicone because it doesn't attack rubber or plastic).
It's a fantastic camera. I love using full Auto ISO groups (you can switch between three of them) for almost everything other than low/poor light.
I love how it's possible to set a button to toggle between group 1 and your current group in the quick menu. I set my group 1 to have a bunch of settings I might need quickly, as I can access it rapidly with that toggle. (One such thing is full mechanical shutter, to rapidly get me off my usual electronic shutter when needed. And another is full focus tracking.)

You were right Mike. I changed the Natural Live View setting and the preview now matches the final photo. Thanks so much! I will pin your comment in case someone else faces the same issue. I find that the rolling shutter gets worst with longer focal lengths. With the 16mm F/2.8 I was getting almost no rolling shutter. But it is not horrible. I think the a6400 had more rolling shutter effect than the XT-5. I never noticed that the switch got stiffer to be honest but I might try the silicone lubricant anyway. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will keep them in mind for the video in which I will be talking about how I set up the Fuji XT-5.

@@AristeidisSfakianos Nice! I vaguely remember using those settings also to make the back screen expose nicely in combination with certain flash settings (manual flash only, I think, for when the camera exposes low but will be 'topped up' by a bit of flash - so I just want to so a normal natural exposure on the back screen not a dark one. I think shooting flash on TTL would prevent that need).
I have seen a very small number of people say rolling shutter is made worse by slow shutter speed and/or long focal length. But only rarely enough that I suspect they are wrong.
It's my impression that a camera scans the image from top to bottom at a fixed speed when running electronic shutter. That's why the internet has lists of what the scan time is for each camera model.
So I think the only thing that matters (for rolling shutter) should be how quickly the subject is moving from one part of your screen/frame to another part. If it's a car going at 100mph it will be very distorted if driving close across in front of you, but not distorted if a long way away.
The exception would be if you are shooting into the distance and aren't keeping the camera steady. Then yes I guess the entire image could be distorted and bent by rolling shutter. Definitely check that your X-T5's IBIS is switched on (maybe you switched it off if you were using a tripod, as many do?).
I did read that, for video, you should adjust your shutter speed to twice your frame rate.
But I could be wrong. In any case, rolling shutter and barring should both vanish if you switch your camera to mechanical shutter.

@@mikefoster6018 I don't usually shoot with flash as I am mostly shooting natural light but it does make a lot of sense. I am not sure how the MS/ES issue would affect rolling shutter for video. I think the rolling shutter is predominantly video. It hasn't been an issue for me when it comes to photos. Other than that I agree with everything you say about the rolling shutter issue. Cheers Mike!

I'm a fully articulated screen guy bu the variable angle tilt screen is AMAZING for photography and I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy using it.
I think with a 16mm or shorter lens you could use the X-T5 for landscape specially to take advantage of the 40MP sensor. It even has the HDR mode for you to take advantage of with a tripod.

Regarding file sizes: You should really switch to LOSSLESS COMPRESSSED for the RAW files. There is no downside - the lossless compression means that the pictures are identical and then the file sizes go down to 35-50 MB depending on the scene. That is the same file size as the lower resolution Sony files you mention (A7 III-files), even though they have many more pixels. It's a mystery that this is a feature missing from many Sony cameras, and it should be the standard setting on Fujifilm too. :)

I am familiar with the lossless compressed file format Bjorn but I was reluctant from using it since, in my mind, it is still a compressed file format. If you are mentioning it maybe it is worth a try then. Thanks for the suggestion!

@@AristeidisSfakianos there are algorithms to compress data without losing any quality. If you think about it you can compress a text file, but if that lost any part of the file the text would be messed up. Applying this sort of algorithm to photos gives you less compression but full quality

Mmm - not sure your comment about the "majority of people using the camera" would prefer a fully articulating screen as you suggest. In fact it is quite the opposite!!! Stills photographers (who make up the majority of users of the XT5) were crying out for a flip screen. If you, and others who are more hybrid shooters, should go for the XH2.....this is the hybrid equivalent. The XT5 is aimed at stills photographers in the main

    • @AristeidisSfakianos
      @AristeidisSfakianos  8 місяців тому +1

I understand your argument. I am just thing that a fully articulating screen has more functionality than a tilting screen and with this Fuji could cover everyone with the XT-5. I am not sure why you replace a feature with more functionality with one with less. Regardless, this is my plan. To use XT-5 as my main photography driver and get an XH1 or 2 for all my video work. It is just that XT-5 has such great video features that it is hard for me to believe that Fuji didn't mean it to be used for video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Nigel! Your comments are always appreciated!

Yes, you are right....the XT5 does have decent video specs, but this is because it can!! Some stills shooters will want some video occasionally so they are provided. The issue about "replacing something with less funcitonality" (the screen) is not, in my and many other stills shooters view, seen as a retrograde step....quite the opposite. Stills shooters were dismayed to see the attempt at making the XT4 a hybrid and introducing that articulating screen and were shouting from the rooftops for the new XT5 to revert back to a more still friendly flip screen,,,,,and Fuji listened - XH2 for hybrid shooters....XT5 for stills shooters. Great move on their part. I always watch your videos and like them a lot....just wanted to give a viewpoint from a stills shooter!!

Count me in to the vote for a flip screen. I had every XT model from X-T1 to X-T3. I skipped the X-T4 just because of that articulating screen and I now have two X-T5's to make up for it. I am so happy Fuji returned to the flip screen with the X-T5. All Fuji need to do for the X-T6 is fix their AF tracking hit rate. If they could do this they would have the most perfect APSC camera on the market in my opinion.

Its slogan says Photography first. Fuji has listened to its user regarding its screen on XT4. In fact, most XT user despised the articulating screen on XT4. See the XT5 ads and you'd see how Fuji really boast this tilting screen. For stills, this is the best for composition. As for video segment, you might want to try XS20, XT4 or if you can stretch your budget, XH2 or XH2s.

Credible review, Aris. (You look like a tough dude in that black leather jacket😊). I tried Fuji but was disappointed in the AF hit rates - did not make up for other good features. Even when using single point AF with maximum number of points, the focus was not set exactly on the dot the “box” center, but a tad offset - not good for critical focus images.
Exposure preview issue is not unique to Fuji. Above comment gives one approach. LCD preview is the JPG image, not true RAW. Increasing screen brightness can also mislead regarding exposure. It’s a good practice not to rely on LCD alone - pay more attention to the meter. If you do prefer the “eyeball” method, try calibrating the camera using a grey card. In controlled conditions shoot a grey card (nail the right exposure) and adjust exposure compensation for screen brightness factor in all of your images. For instance, you might find that the LCD “eyeball” is consistently +.5 EV more than correct.
Minor nit pick: At 5:05 in vid “choise” should be “choice”. 😊
    Cheers!

Right?? Love this jacket and I am very glad you picked up Paul! 😀🙏 Yeah. It doesn't excel in auto focus. This is true and whether you choose it or not depends on what you need it for. This is a good point. I have set up my screen to be quite bright. I should probably bring it down a bit. However, it is weird but I never really had this problem with the XT-3 and one would expect that the XT-5 would have all those things sorted from the beginning. You are right. I should probably use the grey card method to calibrate the camera. I might even make a Short about that given the opportunity. My apologies for the little mistake Paul. Thanks a lot for pointing it out. I will be more careful moving forward. Always appreciate your comments!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but the image preview on your LCD screen and visor is always based on your JPEG settings-- this is why you're getting different contrast and exposure on the raw file compared to what you see in-camera. You can use tools like the histogram or the exposure indicator to help adjust your exposure while shooting rather than only relying on the displayed image.
I don't shoot on Fuji, but my Lumix camera also has a setting to display the expected exposure in the live preview before I hit the shutter release. This could also be a useful setting to switch on if Fuji offers an equivalent! It can save you from a few wasted shots trying to get your exposure right in manual mode, for example. (On Lumix cameras, this setting is called "'Constant preview").
