  • After crossing into the Czech Republic, our first stop is in Olomouc where we visit the Trinity Column and the Communist Astronomical Clock.
The Trinity Column was built to celebrate life, faith and gratitude for the end of the plague in Moravia in 1713, however, during it’s completion, it took the lives of 5 of it’s artisans and craftsmen, including it’s designer and principal architect.
In the same square is the Communist Astronomical Clock. The clock was built 10 years after it’s sister clock which is located in Prague, Czech Republic and its mechanism and original design was similar. However, during WW2, the close in Olomouc was heavily damaged, with only the mechanisms in tact. Since the Czech Republic was under Soviet control, the clock was rebuilt with Communist iconography, such as bakers, blacksmiths, and workers. So instead of Angels and Saints dancing when the bells toll, Communist workers dance around.
Our second stop is at the Macocha Abyss, also known as the Step-Mothers Abyss. The abyss is named after a story where a step-mother pushes her step-son into the abyss, but then later finds herself at the bottom of the abyss, either by her own guilt or from the townspeople.
We end our day in Brno at the Astronomical Clock. During the 30 Years War, which included the countries of Bohemia (now Czech Republic) and Sweden, including many others, Brno was never captured. Nearing the end of the war the Swedish Generals told the Generals in Brno that if the city hadn’t falled by Noon, Sweden would retreat. The Bohemian Generals turned back the clocks one hour so they rang an hour earlier, thus ringing out at 11am, thus fooling the Swedish Generals, who then make a hasty retreat. This clock was a memorial to the citizens and Generals of Brno during the Thirty Years’ War.
