I made a simple map for this trip. If you want to follow along or to consider paddling this route, the map is available here for free: www.dropbox.com/sh/ecs0amwrcmabtob/AAC7_xu0VCxdgb6Z18ztAVnEa?dl=0 It's geo-referenced and will show your position on the map in an app like Avenza Maps. This is a re-release of the 2018 Algoma Headwaters videos series. I wanted to re-release it for a few reasons: (1) looking back, I wasn't satisfied with the original edit and I liked the idea of making it a long format video, (2) this was one of the best trips of my life and I enjoy sharing it, and (3) because this is a great time to be thinking about ice-out trout trips :)
Thanks this one goes on my bucket of Ontario canoe trips. You really should give a name to that falls. Put it on your map thats how naming things permanently gets started. Name it after your girl who knows maybe you'll immortalize her.
Even in my better years I would not work this hard to be on any lake .... I drive to a lake.. put my boat in ..and then I stay there... Portaging seems ridiculous to me😆
Loved the impulsive dancing on the lake but instantly thought after hearing the birds call... what’s not to love of the sounds of nature...it never gets old
We re-watched this video again tonight when there wasn't anything else of interest to watch. It turned into a beautiful trip, in spite of the wicked start with one problem after another. Thank you for pushing on. It was worth it. One thing that really stood out was the change in your methods between then and now. For instance, picking up a fish, you used dry hands. These days you make a point of wetting them. When holding the poor fish, your grip was so tight I could see your fingers sinking in and the poor fish was burping like crazy. Also, you left two to three hooks on your lures, but recently you taught Xander the benefit of removing all but one hook. Practice makes perfect. Way to go Jon. Keep it up
Second time I watched this one. Just as enjoyable . What a spectacular trip. Great way to relax on a Sunday afternoon after a tough slow day of fishing. Every year I can't help but rush the spring fishing season. Thanks a lot for posting and have a great day.
I truly have enjoyed the videos, you are a true brush and trail cutter. It's people like you the make it possible for the other "skilled outdoors-men" to complete their dream trips, lol. You paved the way. "Outstanding!!!" As an old man speaking... I hope you really appreciate how special the "uncut" trail of life can be. This is Special, enjoy it while you can... Peace !
Thank You John for great great great videos. I love your attitude, energy, creativity, and respect for nature. I'm Canadian, from Toronto, now living in Mexico the past 7 years - the one thing I miss most from back home are the northern Ontario canoe trips - so your video adventures hit home big time - close to my heart. You've got more guts than I to hack thru those brutal portages !! I'm learning a lot too from your videos and I'll apply to my motorcycle adventures here central Mexico. Keep up the great work. Mark.
Jon. When you are able, please get a 4 runner. Keep your rav4 but you need a 4 runner. Possibly the greatest road mule ever built. It will never break and its almost impossible to get stuck. Love the show!
This is my favourite trip you have ever posted. Best time of year and great trip with big reward working through adversity. If someone asked me what do you dream about. I could easily show them this trip
Very interesting to hear that, thanks JB!! It's one of my top few trips...sometimes I think it was my most enjoyable trip ever. But the conditions played such a huge part of that. Would be interested to hear someone's perspective with less than perfect weather, fishing and bugs.
Backcountry Angling Ontario Sun - trout - minimal bugs. That’s the holy trinity right there! Like Halley’s Comet man! You hit the jackpot that year. Good for you.
John buddy! Those scenes you cut in with different bits of nature, be it animals or the branch of a tree blended with the beautiful music are just amazing! It's a nice touch to your videos. Thoroughly enjoy your work I appreciate what you do bud.
Another old geezer who spent his younger days paddling the BWCA and Quetico .over 2k miles over 20 years….living my fishing dreams through your great adventures.
👍🏼 Have fun learn and pass it on to the next generation. This year or next year I want to get up to Algonquin Park for sure.Keep up the good work and have a blast doing it.
Great remake from the original version. You are a blast 2 watch. It was great getting lost in this video for a couple of hours. The beauty of your country is amazing. The respect you have for nature and wildlife is outstanding. Thanks again Jon. Stay safe. 👍👍🎣🎣
Yep, as corny as this will sound, Jon, I like your candid honesty, your humour, and friendliness; it's like we've been friends a long, long time. Thanks for taking us along.
I haven't seen this beautiful route yet thanks for reposting a great trip... I'll have to check out that book with the forgotten canoe routes! Thanks again
WOW What a fantastic idea. Had I know that years ago... "Reset the trip. That didn't happen. Start over!!" Man that would of saved a lot of really bad times. Thanks Jon
I keep telling you that you are incredible in hopes that your head doesn't swell! Your videos are so well done, John. I dream of trout fishing trips like that one. I'm seeing that your luck and mine are something we definitely have in common! Ha, ha! Chin up and keep smiling! It's all good when you get back next to the fire! Cheers!
Hahah you rock Brian, thank you so very much. This was truly a dream trip...may never get a spring trip like it again. 10 nights, incredible fishing, and perfect weather the whole time except for one afternoon which happened to be when I opted for a rest day...that just doesn't happen.
Came back to watch again 2 years later. Still great. Especially the rest day (53:47) -- ground beetle journey, rain clinging, onions frying, beaver slap, et al. Nice piano too. You mesmerize with your adventure like watching paddle swirls. Thank you. (Hey, is it too late to add "Buy me a garlic bread" to this video?)
I love your solo camping and canoeing more than any of your other videos. It seems more refreshing, much more beauty and more interesting to me. Love when you film the tall trees, the creatures, the sunsets, the rivers, and I also like watching you in that environment and how comfortable, calm and fearless you come across. You also seem to play the perfect music/melody for you video's. I would love to see you fish Halibut, I find them to be interesting fish and Delicious. Can't wait to see your next Solo Camping.
Thanks for this beautiful comment Leesea! Love your appreciation of the little things in nature and in the video. I would love that too 🤤 Thank you again!
I’ve been seeing a theme develop in your videos with missing gear. I’m impressed that you’ve been able to keep a sense of humour about it. Good idea to have spare lifejacket and sweater in your car. I’ll keep that in mind for my next trip!
I love your videos. I once saw a video of Joe Robinet and on one of his trips he went to a lake to catch Blue trout. I would love for you to go there and fish for those blue trout. My camping and hiking days are over. My cancer issues keep me in the bed these days. Those blue trout where amazingly blue. Let me vicariously explore with you. the bible say's young men see vision's, old men dream dreams. Let this old man dream about those blue trout.
I googled blue trout and it said they are called a Beardslee trout. They are so rare that they only occur in one lake in the whole world. They are only in Lake Crescent, Washington U. S. The locals call them Blue backs.
In case you didn’t understand what the fish was trying to tell you he said “A man in your line of work needs a 4x4 pickup with a lift kit and some nice off road tires.”
Blue Barron When I heard “I’m stuck”, & saw the street tires on his rig, the exact same thought screamed thru my little toy brain!😂. Lifted rig, stock rig, they’re all only as good as their TIRES! Like his, my rig spends more time as a Grocery Getter than off reading these days, BUT, when we fish the Great North Woods in MAY, I worry less than most. The last 4 sets of tires I’ve put on my rigs are BF Goodrich KO2’s & I won’t run with less! When I get teased about “Geeze, Jim. Those tires aggressive enough for ya’?!?” I look ‘em in the eye & say “You know those days when you get 18” of snow, & you don’t want to take your truck out?” They always say “YEP.” I say “With those tires, I don’t have those days.” Mic drop.
Hahaha you guys are right for this kind of stuff. Shouldn't have been on that road, but wanderlust and hoping for a shortcut got the best of me. Just can't justify basing my car on the .01% of the year I actually need that clearance. And now I've got Erin's 4x4 Tacoma anyway 😝😝
Awesome, Ontario lost canoe routes . I got that for fathers day years ago and always said I wanted to do each route,... awesome gonna love this episode already !
Thanks for re-releasing this. This is one of my favorite trips of yours. I have been seriously considering this as an ice-out trip and the map will come in very handy. Dan.
Thanks a lot Dan :) This trip was such a gem. The weather and fishing played a big part in that, but if the forecast is looking good, I'm confident the fish will be there for you. Hope you make it out!
I love your style of film making and the raw style of shooting that is so refreshing. Capturing and editing conversations is tricky but you do it well. I don’t think you need to narrate (vlogger style) as often as you do. You can let the long and slow cuts take over the story line progression.
Great video again Jon! The missus and I were actually yelling "NO, NO!" each time you released one one of those brookies! They're in very short supply an hour north of the big city. I don't even chase them anymore, they're harrassed enough as it is. Lakers are everywhere, but what I wouldn't do for a shore lunch of 14" wild brookie! You know, short of 38 portages.... 😊Take care, cheers.
Serious dejavu, we’ve been here before. I loved it the last time I watched it and I loved it watching it again. I still have a couple feet of snow in my yard so it was nice watching a video of bare earth and sunshine. Thanks for sharing this trip again, what a beauty place.
Thanks for tuning in again Dane! :) I hear that...and we've got 10-15cm coming tonight and more in the forecast next week, just when we were starting to melt. "Second winter" as they say.
Boy, this brought back some great memories. Those back lakes north of Megasin Lake was the first time I tried out a canoe. I was staying at that lodge with my dad - I think I was 12 at the time.
I remember reading your article about it before the trip! It was one of very few things I could find online about the route...that and a discussion on myCCR. Not much else.
great trip Jon, beautiful Ontario,, lovely fish, nice work, another trip is on my list, thank you for that, My nova craft is getting ready, :0) take care,, Bob
Another nice video production of some great looking back-country Jon! That run of waterfalls you found at the north end of Torrence (sp?) Lake was such a gem. I can't imagine coming upon that in real life, all alone to enjoy first hand. I am not a big angler but I really enjoyed seeing the Lake and Brook Trout you were catching, the varied colours and cool one- offs like that big dark trout. Anyway, thanks for making the effort to film this as I know it can't be easy. Keep adventuring!
Great video and what a great time to put it up, breaks up the long winter and gets the excitement going for the upcoming canoe season. Thanks so much for the link to your maps, they are hard to come by so thank you!
The one you let get away. We believe you because you sound so crushed. Although I’m happy you put it back. Now you’ll have to come back and see if you can capture it on film. Oh and what they left out on the review was “Great place to catch some nice fish.” Great video and look forward to the next one.
I really admire you keeping your cool at the beginning of the trip. I'd have been cussing up a storm if I lost my rain jacket and life jacket. 🤣👍👍Awesome video. Makes me want to camp this weekend.
Great Video and Trip. The fishing looks unreal! The song “Kevin’s a miracle man in the bush” and “never stand up in a tippy canoe” kept playing in my head. Hahaha. I hope you know what I mean.

Im just blown away by all of your videos. Ive been binge watching them all week. Simply amazing.
Love the loons. Best part of the trip . I miss that we use to listen to them on Meziadian Lake in Northern BC . Lived on that lake for 35yrs .
The fish are beautiful but the moose and the night sounds are heaven to me.
I can't get enough of your videos, just really enjoy them!

Wow! Now that was an epic trip. Incredible fishing. Great weather, doesn't make losing the rain jacket seem so bad other than being out a few bucks.

A little over a month til opener buddy and your video's got me pumped!
Thanks Shawn!! Almost there man!
Watching this was a much-needed relaxing escape. Thank you for posting this!
Just what I like to hear :) Thanks my friend!
great trip Jon, beautiful Ontario,, lovely fish, nice work, another trip is on my list, thank you for that, My nova craft is getting ready, :0) take care,, Bob
Thanks Bob :) It's a beauty...hope you find your way there!
Backcountry Angling Ontario me as well, would love to get into those brookies
Another nice video production of some great looking back-country Jon! That run of waterfalls you found at the north end of Torrence (sp?) Lake was such a gem. I can't imagine coming upon that in real life, all alone to enjoy first hand.
I am not a big angler but I really enjoyed seeing the Lake and Brook Trout you were catching, the varied colours and cool one- offs like that big dark trout. Anyway, thanks for making the effort to film this as I know it can't be easy. Keep adventuring!
This is just awesome. I'm going to be moving to Chapleau sometime soon with my family and can't wait to start doing this sort of thing!
Right on Simon! You're going to have a great playland around you
Excited for spring but Sunday morning I'm going for 2 nights by ski and pulk sled . I made pemmican for food though, and will eat any fish I catch.
Awesome! Hard not to focus on spring, but late winter is a great time too.
The vid was so nice I watched it twice. I'm sure you remember the comment I made the last time so I won't repeat myself. tfrs!
Tf*r*s hahah love the acronym work. You rock Ted, thanks man!
Love the video and love it up there my dad and I have a trap camp on fifty-dollar Lake and we do lots of fishing up there
Thanks Joe! Did you leave the other comment about your trapline there? It was a different account, just curious :)
Yeah just another account 😊
@@joemartin4292 figured out must be. That world be a crazy coincidence lol
Great video and what a great time to put it up, breaks up the long winter and gets the excitement going for the upcoming canoe season. Thanks so much for the link to your maps, they are hard to come by so thank you!
Thanks so much Amori, love to hear that! Almost done another winter :)
One day my friend, I’ll be up there to experience it for myself, thank you, wicked trip!
Go get 'er brother!!
The one you let get away. We believe you because you sound so crushed. Although I’m happy you put it back. Now you’ll have to come back and see if you can capture it on film. Oh and what they left out on the review was “Great place to catch some nice fish.” Great video and look forward to the next one.
Hahaha still painful 🤦♂️😜 Thanks Alice!
I really admire you keeping your cool at the beginning of the trip. I'd have been cussing up a storm if I lost my rain jacket and life jacket. 🤣👍👍Awesome video. Makes me want to camp this weekend.
Hahah thanks a lot Leslie!
Awesome adventure. Great video!!
Great Video and Trip. The fishing looks unreal!
The song “Kevin’s a miracle man in the bush” and “never stand up in a tippy canoe” kept playing in my head. Hahaha. I hope you know what I mean.
