Their special teams unit was excellent last year too. Their huge punt return in the 4th qtr was a back breaker for the eagles in the Superbowl. Go birds 🥲🦅
@@dnaharis7037Butker was genuinely 6th in betting odds near the end of the game right before Chiefs had their drive in OT. If Mahomes doesnt throw the TD and instead Butker tied up with another 50+ fg he would've been damn close. Then if they stop the 49'ers and he hits the last one to seal the game im so deadass when i say he would've had a legit chance.
It's not that he targeted a receiving team's foot/ankle... it's the fact that with pressure in his face that had been lacking in his other BOMBS (good bombs not bad) he had to get it off more quickly and with less follow through which resulted in his shortest punt, which was not expected by the receiving team due to his previous punts. That led to the blockers being closer to where the punt landed, thus making the possibility of hitting one of them all that more likely. Call that luck if you want to, but it was a clear, logical progression of the way the special teams as a whole for KC was dominating the game (not just Tommy Townsend) with SF adjusting to get blockers closer to the punt returner in the first place.
Obviously he didn't know that exact thing was going to happen. But the fact that he was able to put the ball into exactly the place where that *could* happen is good enough. You don't have to do everything yourself, you just have to give your opponent the opportunity to make mistakes.
IMO, Butker should have had it, and TT get a special shout out. To get MORE than half of the teams points (13/25), and break a super bowl record, Butker deserved it
Kickers/punters are always overlooked, even though they have carried games on their shoulders MANY times before. The man had a damn good game for sure. 5 seconds of hangtime on the short punts is incredible. Distance is great, but that hangtime can be the difference between no return, and a runback. Good on him
The amount of special teams talent emerging recently... football is just gonna turn into another steph curry 3 pointer situation where all points come from the kickers blowing the field open. how exciting. xfl, where you at.

I absolutely love Tommy T. He's been an incredible asset to the Chiefs organization. Thank you for this video, Isaac. Know you're not a Chiefs fan, but game recognizes game.
Ray Wersching should have won the Super Bowl MVP for the 49ers back in the 80s. He scored 14 of San Fran's 26 points, and none of his kickoffs were returned past the Bengals' 20 yard line. My buddies and I agreed on his greatness that game, watching it on TV, live. Nobody else really had a great game, so they give it to the QB.
Damn crazy how the more u understand football the more you understand how crucial punters and kickers are and to have two clutch ones at both positions is a few games a season and a few in the post season also chief kicking game is clutch like their qb
Any punter who can consistently give you long hang time when he kicks is worth his weight in gold. It's an impressive skill that requires adamantine strength in the legs and uncanny coordination. There was a rival high school that had a boyhood friend of mine on their team back in the day, and who had an insane hang time. Everyone was in awe when he punted.
What an intriguing title! The idea of a punter almost winning Superbowl MVP is absolutely fascinating. It highlights the unpredictable and exciting nature of sports, where sometimes the most unexpected players can shine on the biggest stages. The Superbowl always brings out incredible talent and memorable moments, and this story seems like it adds a unique twist to the game's rich history. It's great to see different positions getting recognition for their impact on the game! 🏈✨
You could tell that both teams were firing on all cylinders with the way big plays were made at every level, this SB definitely showcased the best of all three sections of the game.
Had the second half not been way higher scoring than the first. I think he def could’ve won MVP. I mean that punt in where it hit the 9ers foot saved the chiefs the game. Not to mention he’s been amazing the whole game. Realistically and I don’t mean to hate on mahomes or anything but I genuinely think this guy contributed more than mahomes when it comes to What is expected of the position-> their actual game results. Obv a QB is gonna impact the game more than the punter it’s just how football works but if you asked me if they got a mid punter or a mid QB to replace mahomes or this guy during the Super Bowl? Getting the mid punter might actually be a bigger loss due to how many drives were stopped short due to these amazing punts.
I think you’re mistaking results and value. Unforced errors cannot be attributed to the punter, your analysis is flawed as you base your premise as plays by player equals points. By your logic, butker and mahomes directly contributed to more points in this game than TT did directly so in his entire career. Isolating plays without context in a team game is something I don’t agree with and arguments can be made to restructure MVP awards for offense defense and special teams but your take is simply illogical.
Y’all are saying he got lucky but mahomes got lucky with this and the missed PAT. Mahomes really didn’t play that good this game. This guy should’ve won mvp. He did everything perfectly. And obv a punter can’t score points but he set up his offense and defense in amazing positions which indirectly caused them to win. He def provided more value than any player on the team
He's a cool guy, I saw him signing autographs at the parade for those who had his jersey, he even signed a $5 bill for those fans. Nice legs as well lol
I don't get impressed by punters very often.....but that 62 yarder from his own 5 was epic. To go from your own ted zone to their red zone with a punt is huge in a game like this
