I have lived in San Antonio almost all my life, my parents permanently settled here in 1969 after my father retired from the military when I was just five. To say I have moved residences frequently would be an understatement, I don't wish it on anyone, but it has allowed me to experience what living in San Antonio is like from just about every neighborhood we have. From Terrell Hills to Las Palmas, Pecan Valley to Stone Oak, Wheatley Heights to Los Angeles Heights, Tobin Hill to the Tobin Estate, Floresville, Cibolo, Timberwood Park, and Helotes, I've moved often but not far. What I can say from this experience, where ever I was in and around San Antonio I always felt at home. I always felt a part of the community, the culture, and the diversity that is uniquely San Antonio. Here, more so than anywhere else in the country I have visited, we have done a remarkably good job of organic diversity in just about every way possible. It says a lot about our city and our people, about or culture, that we are such an inclusive community. I hope we can retain that, and that we not allow the hate, division, and craziness that is threatening to tear the rest of the country apart to also tear our community into factions. Of course we can do better, but let's not become worse in doing so. We are San Antonio, we are Tejas, and we are family.

Can we talk about the waste of money it was to build the huge VIA bus station at 281 & Stone Oak. The place is a ghost town! Nobody uses it! It could have serviced other areas of town much better. Like the northeast side which is greatly neglected on so many things.

You should talk about the influx of meth coming in along with outside state ppl taking advantage of it which also plays apart in violent crime. I've lived on the southside my whole life and I can see the difference in a span of 10 years

    • @RoySATX
      @RoySATX Рік тому

What is coming in now isn't typical meth, that stopped arriving about six years ago. It had previously been high potency D-isomer meth, the stuff most people think of and the stuff that is responsible for the euphoria and increased energy levels. It abruptly stopped arriving and was replaced with heavily adulterated and lower potency L-isomer meth. Users no longer get the euphoric highs and long-lasting increase in activity levels, they do still get the physical and psychological issues, the addictive effect, as well as increased incidences of extremely high blood pressure, irritability, and depression. Also, while fatal overdoses of D-meth were extremely rare, the same is not the case with L-meth especially considering the much larger adulterant load or cut seen in L-meth, including sadly fentanyl.

You talk about Universities at the beginning of the video and I often joke if SA wasn't known as Military City USA, we should be called College Town USA due to just how many colleges and Universities are in this area from the 2 UTSA campuses, to one of A&M's campuses, to all of the private universities like my alum, UIW, and there's St. Mary's and Trinity. Not to mention the local community colleges. Am I missing anything lol? Of course you have in nearby counties like Texas State in San Marcos and TLU in Seguin.
I think there's 2 huge contributing factors to the spike in crime in SA. 1. Katrina- When Katrina hit New Orleans, a LOT of people moved to Texas, and unfortunately their gangs came with them and they eventually clashed with the gangs already here. 2. The Open borders with Mexico. I know for a fact that the Cartels have been making their moves into Texas. Like I have family in Bastrop County (located between Austin and SA), and the Cartel have been buying private property out there and people have been moving due to the dramatic increase in violence. One of my cousins almost got SHOT by a stray bullet due to a turf battle near his ranch. So yeah, thanks Biden . . . .
I am not surprised that the Medical field is still big here, but there's a problem with this number- the new people getting hired sorely lack peoples skills. My mom has worked in the medical industry most of my life (she was a receptionist and did secretarial work). Well, she eventually was forced to retire early thanks to Obamacare shutting down certain types of hospitals and no one will hire her due to her age (despite her years of experience). It's also why you have so much young people in the health industry because the 'higher ups' of these facilities refuse to pay high wages to those who deserve it. I honestly worry about the Health industry because most of it isn't privately owned anymore and Obamacare certainly threw a monkey wrench into the situation.
Okay, sorry for the rant, I still love SA mind you, I just am tired of the things that have caused this city to go downhill in crucial areas. One of it's biggest pros those is the diversity. Even from when my mom was young, the city was already diverse compared to other cities. She was a teen in the 70s and in her group of closest friends, she was the only white person, with the others either being Hispanic or black. Over 10 years ago, I learned just HOW diverse the city has gotten- we have one of the largest communities in the USA of Muslims and also a huge number of Indian folk (I still see families from these two groups quite often).
Hmmm, nice job covering Floresville, but I think you should mention that it's not a suburb of SA since it's the County Seat of Wilson County, especially when there are other towns in between it. Like when you look at addresses in Floresville, they don't say "San Antonio", they say Floresville. That's just my personal preference though.

So, racial diversity. The city is great. I'm a conservative white guy. And when someone, usually from Austin, says I don't understand racism, I tell them I do because I was a white kid from the West side and went to S.A.I.S.D. schools for most of my schooling. (That's a joke ... but true) Seriously ... it's a great city. Some places I wouldn't go (like Zarzamora and Frio City Rd.) but that's true in just about every large city.

Your going to be hard pressed to find an urban area with less crime than San Antonio, unless you are able and willing to double or triple your cost of living. You are going to pay one way or the other, San Antonio strikes a reasonable balance. Think back over the past few years, add up all the riots, murders, car jackings, and burglaries in urban centers across the country and San Antonio for its size is remarkably quiet. Sorry you got robbed, but criminals are everywhere and by your own admission you made yourself a mark. You did not deserve to get robbed, but you bear some personal responsibility. Welcome to San Antonio, sorry your arrival wasn't so welcoming.

As for language (Tejano) I have found the Spanish I spoke when living in Lubbock and Midland is far different than in San Antonio. But, hey, that is part of the fun in expanding one's horizion.
Medical care (one of the primary reasons I'm here) is excelllent.

Most of the jobs being Healthcare explains all the Covid vax mandates on jobs. I refused to get it, and was out of work for 2 months after my contract was canceled. I work at Whataburger now, and have embarrassingly been evicted and now homeless, as fast food CANNOT pay the bills (you won't get proper hours). Being back in SA these past several months, it's sad to see so much crime here these days. It wasn't always like this. If it means anything, I'm on the West Side, and work by a High School. The strip center right across from my work gets shot up all the time.

The police force is how they keep the natives(ethnic minorities) quiet, they constantly patrol their neighborhoods and profile them, why a felon can't vote and it's easier than you think to become a felon in Texas for some stupid minor drug or alcohol offence than people realize. Voter suppression, the police and courts help.
People don't understand San Antonio history, the Westside use to be Indian town since before the Alamo and still is. a string of Apache Rancherias at the fork of the Alazan and Apche creek(many more Helotes was an Apache corn Camp) has always belonged to the Apache. while the Texas rangers and Texans hunted them down many just went home to the Sun Otters clans Rancheria there an never left Still there, but spread out westward past Our Lady of the lake and today beyond. So many there have No idea? who they are an just go with the Texans Story that all of them are Mexican and flooded across the border with Santa Anna. Idiotas!!! La villita was where the soldiers(mercenary soldiers who fought for or against all six flags) of the Alamo that married Indian women many Apache women and had many many mestizo children. when they were forced to hunt Indians down and ship them off(many of whom were family members through marriages), THEY CLAIMED THEY WERE SIMPLE POOR INNOCENT MEXICANS. F-that their families lived and died 8 generations(at least 200 years or more) before the Anglo's flocked in to steal their Rancheria(some were corn camps some hunting camps they rotated living on to let soil an game regenerate. When Squatters were attacked it was because they squatted on one claiming nothing and nobody was there. Just developed prime real estate that belonged to the Apache. The reason Drug and alcohol use is more prevalent in this area IS BECAUSE ITS A RESERVATION NO ONE EVER MADE OFFICIAL.
Anglo Historians know, it's one of the biggest reasons they want to control what history narratives are taught in the white indoctrination schools. How they point an shake their white boney fingers at the Chinese is really so hypocritical it ISN'T EVEN FUNNY. The Canary islanders were snobs built and lived across the river toooo close to the Apache Rancherias and constantly complained of being attacked AFTER THEY WERE TOLD NOT TO BUILD THERE.IDIOTS!!! NEVER EVER LIVED IN LA VILLITA. their history is buried under the Bexar county court house and city hall the ANGLOS(who they sided with about the slavery issue) purposely built on top of their history to erase it. Because THAT'S WHAT THEY DO! Bet yo didn't know any of that DUDE? your ancestors probably rode an Iron steam ship an took a train to the wild west. LMAO!!! Cowboy's rode into Texas on milk cows tied to Vatters an Mutters wagon, after the west was settled for over 200 years. Just an Apache Princes what do I know? of the Moccasins De Alto Pico Clan.

Yea , being black in Texas is not my favorite situation. I've had soooo much r@cism happen to myself and my daughter whom is mixed ,her father is from Mexico, and now lives here. I'm originally from Florida and going back , I'm not for the attention that is poison to my child and her growth. It's truly sad because how is it that your a minority city but show such hate for black Americans odd to me?? Just odd??

You are right about racism but it mainly comes from the *american black* community. Africans and Latin blacks are more welcoming and not racist compared to the American blacks.

What about for a black African American family? We are considering moving there next summer.

I also think that’s odd? My husband is Asian and he’s gotten a lot of flack too esp on the south side. Weirdly enough, we were more accepted in Boulder, Co

San antonio is gentrified. The inner west and south suburb is where the uneducated hispanics live (iffy/bad community). East/southeast the uneducated blacks (iffy/bad community). The center/ inner north/ north east/north west is where the educated middle class hispanic, whites and blacks live (safe community). Everyone outside hwy 1604 is where the rich educated people live (it a much safer community)
