I honestly thought Rami did amazing. Rami is an excellent actor and I have seen his performances on Mr. Robert. I love Queen but I didn’t like Rocketman as much as the Queen film. BUT, Taron performed very well and his story was interesting to see! Also, I love Rocketman’s costume design!! Both actors are amazing! Let’s not bring someone down... I have seen them perform in different films and TV so both of them are talented actors. You should blame the people behind the Oscars instead.
Like other people pointed out, this is the proportional voting system and I actually think it's amazing that that's what they use! To me that says that issue is with the lack of diversity among voters. The votes represent what the voters think is the best, it's just that voters aren't representative of the population, so general audiences will disagree about who should have won
What I don't get is why the voting process is so convoluted and why the just don't do a simple point system #1 movie- 7 points #2 movie- 6 points #3 movie- 5 points #4 movie- 4 points #5 movie- 3 points #6 movie- 2 points #7 movie- 1 point That way each vote would count and there wouldn't be that thing where the #2 gets more points that it doesn't deserve and the least voted one for #1 getting knocked out. Idk it's hard to explain but yeah, you get it. I know a Tru #1 voting system can be harmful and unfair because I've seen it in the US voting system. One concern with the point system is that average movies that are solidly in the middle of the pack earning 3 4 or 5 points consistently might be bumped up due to continuity in their voting and polarizing may have their places diminished due to fluctuating 7s and 1s but I still think it's more straight forward than the one the Oscar's have on place right now.

yeah that was so botched and just as bad as for the La La Land crew. They had started giving their speeches of gratitude and were interrupted to find out they lost while on stage in front of everyone. So embarrassing, they all deserved better. Both film crews.
Ranked-choice voting is perfectly valid, it's meant to allow people to vote for movies that are their favorites even if they seem to be longshots (like, Drive My Car) without having to worry about "wasting" their votes (It's only existed since 2009 btw). It's a voting system devised in regular elections to make voting for third parties less fraught.

Hi trin! Love this video. The voting system you described for best picture is just the proportional voting system in action ( a proposed replacement for our current General Election first past-the-post-system, which is just whoever gets the most number 1 votes wins). It may sound unfair that if a film gets the most number 1 votes they don't win but this system is actually far more proportional in result. Think about it like this, if a film just got a win based on most number 1 votes then a film could have 39% votes, and another film could have 38% votes. Film 1 would win despite basically being rated as good as film 2. That is not fair. Proportional voting is way more fair than FPTP, as someone who studies voting and politics. It's called proportional voting for a reason, it creates a result of votes which are far more proportional to the way people actually voted, unlike FPTP which doesn't take into account ranked preferences. Another way to look at it is that FPTP means that a film could get 29% of the votes, meaning that 71% of the voters didn't want them to win, but that film could still win because all the other films also have low percentages. This means that despite the majority of people voting against the film, that film still wins. It is not fair (just like the FPTP system is not fair in real life either and also leads to disproportionate General Election results). Really informative video! Love the editing
Yeah ok, I agree that just going by the most voted at first is flawed, but take the election system in my country. There are two terms, on the first one you vote for whoever you want, but if none of the politicians is elected with at least 50% + 1 vote they take the two who had the biggest percentages and make a second election between those two. I's far more intuitive than that and more honest with the voters.
I love the preferential ballot because it reassures voters that their vote will survive beyond their absolute favorite and have a stronger influence on the eventual winner.
She said that it made sense to do it if it was close though (Ex. 39% and 38%)... There is still the problem of boosted films that win because they are just more agreeable. Ur saying that you like that the agreeable film wins which may make in politics but it is also why a lot of people hate the Oscars because it doesn't seem real.

The Oscars use what’s called rank choice voting for best picture. As you described, there are definitely issues with it, but also pros. It does tend to result in awards going to more mediocre movies over great ones that might alienate older members of the academy. But ranked choice also can empower people to make their top pick more risky. You see a lot of people pushing for ranked choice voting for presidential elections because of this. The general rule in American politics is that you have to vote for either the democratic or republicIan nominee; if you don’t and vote for a green party candidate for example, many people will say your vote is basically wasted. Ranked choice gives you a chance to vote for a more risky or potentially polarizing nominee without worrying that you are doing that. If you did rank a third party candidate and they got the least votes, your vote cancels out and goes to your second choice. I wonder if any academy voters feel more empowered to rank parasite at the top of their list knowing that if it does not do well, they still have a chance to influence the decision. All this to say, I wish the Academy were more transparent about its results; I would love to see how the voting process actually works and how often they actually go into those second and third votes. All of this is actually really interesting though. There’s a theorem called Arrow’s Theorem that states there is no fair voting system. If you’re ever curious, you should check it out. A few other things to think about: 1. The largest voting body in the Academy is actors, which makes sense. But it also means that any film that appeals more to actors instantly has a better chance. Not during nominations, but for the final award. 2. With regards to cheating/buying the awards, I don’t disagree that they are paid for, but I think most studios get away with it because they aren’t explicitly handing out money. I wish you could have covered the idea of “campaigning” for an Oscar more, because that’s something I did not know was a thing until a few years ago. That’s more of the bribery you see, with studios hosting huge parties for Academy members and having their stars gladhand academy members and offer gift baskets and that sort of stuff. All that to say, still rigged. But I think you could have expounded more on how they are rigged. Anyway, great video as always. Love to see this type of content from you.
Think of it like this: there may be two movies that are similar that split the vote, and a third movie that is much different that got the most first place votes, but the majority of people didn't like. If 60% of the people think one of the first two should win, but neither got as many first place votes as the third film, should the third film which was the most disliked by most of the voters win? Ranked choice voting like this is good to avoid that situation.
as for the oscars being unfair, i say YES, *especially* for animated movies. most of the wins go to disney/pixar films cause…..they’re the biggest studio. and when you consider the fact that the oscars is hosted on ABC in the US, which is owned by disney, it can be pretty easy to understand why. it’s rare when the win goes to a non-disney movie, like rango and into the spider-verse. however, the part that boils my blood the most is that members of the academy don’t care about INTERNATIONAL animated films. there are so many sensational animated movies from around the world and almost nobody knows or cares about them because the oscars don’t. there was a voter back in 2015 who referred to the japanese film “the tale of the princess kaguya” and irish film “song of the sea” as “two obscure freakin’ chinese f--in’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw.” like excuse me, CHINESE???? as someone who saw both in THEATERS and considers them as my favorite movies of all time….i’m gonna say that’s not true. then they ended up voting for big hero 6 cause that was the one they saw with their kid. kaguya and song of the sea deserve SO much better lol. and even for this year’s nominees, there was only one international animated film that got nominated, “flee”. are “belle” and “the summit of the gods” a joke to you, academy??? i hope something changes in the future. people need to realize that animation is a beautiful art form that has the ability to have content for EVERYONE, not just children. oh yeah and watch all the films i mentioned, they all range from great to fantastic edit, post-2022 oscars: “animated films make up some of our most formative movie experiences as kids. so many kids watch these movies over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. i see some parents out there knowing what exactly we’re talking about.” well.

I saw a video about animations and the Oscars and the group who pick the movie and they're asked why they picked it they'll just say "I watched it with my kid" so they're not really actively seeing good animation movies which needs to change cuz there's obviously people who have a passion for it and also we need to get out of the mindset of associating animation with kids or that in order for an animation to be for adults it had to be super raunchy or violent

I knew someone who was on the Tony’s voting board. To my understanding, they had much less voters and shows found out who was on the board. He said shows would send him tons of gift baskets to get his vote. I don’t trust for a second that the Oscar’s voting is fair.
this is why prefer Independent Film Awards compared to the Academy, they're more diverse and don't overlook films that aren't their typical period dramas
hey trin! love u so much and thank you for making this video, i think the topic is extremely important and i appreciate the work you’ve done to inform us on the biases of the oscar system. Something important to note though is that the voting method in particular is actually pretty fair mathematically, and arguably more fair than just picking the film with the most number one votes. With this voting method (called the Elimination Method or Instant-Runoff Method)the elimination and adding of votes keeps happening until a 50% win occurs. It’s really likely that the original film with the most votes will still win, because a lot of people will have ranked that film 2nd or 3rd, so it’ll win those extra votes anyways. The only way that the majority will shift from the original “winner” is if a LOT of people ranked the original winner LAST out of 5, because then there’s no chance in it getting the extra votes from the elimination. So in this case, yes that film technically got the most 1st place votes, but a lot of people liked it LEAST, and “new” winner has a LOT of first place votes and a lot of other votes ABOVE the “old” winner. So the “old” winner has a lot of people who really like the film, and a lot that don’t like the film (rank it last) whereas the “new” winner has a lot of people who like the film, a lot of people who kind of like the film, and VERY FEW people who don’t like the film. This voting method is very powerful and accurate because it takes into account which films people like AS WELL AS which films people DIDN’T like. This method is actually used in a lot of places for elections for govt. officials to prevent voting in something that a lot of people love but a lot of other people hate. That being said, the voting is certainly biased given the lack of diversity in the voters, and I completely agree that there needs to be a change in the Oscar voting system, but the METHOD itself is actually pretty sound. Sorry if i didn’t explain this well but there’s a lot on info about this voting method and why it actually protects against bias a fraud! again, thank you for the video, you made some amazing points, LOVE YOU!!!

i absolutely loved your best picture review video last year and was hoping you’d do another, but this is even better! i’ve been watching the oscar’s for a long time and didn’t even totally know how the voting system worked. you explained everything very well and made it comprehensive yet still understandable. also nice to see somebody touch on not only the underrepresentation of minorities but some of the flawed and outdated inner workings of the voting system. hats off to you for this one trin !! you really did a great job on the video.

I've always seen the oscars as not really a competition, but as a compilation of films, actors, technicians, etc. that they want to represent the academy. The process as you explained is more about agreeability. EXACTLY! It's about what the academy can all agree upon as being the film, actor or technician that is representative of the current state of the academy whether its who they actually are or want to be perceived as. Loved the video!
My uncle was a part of the academy prior to his passing!! My great grandpa owned a large film wiping business and my uncle was a part of a sound editing business which did the sound on Star Wars! Both were members before they passed but my uncle had Alzheimer’s so for the years he was unable to partake, his wife voted for him which is interesting I think :)

I really enjoy your video about the Oscars Trin Lovell. I do believe that the Oscars have been in a decline and won't able to return to the glory day. Even though I do feel guilty watching the Oscars every year, I still keep this in mind: It's about the ratings and money. Not to mention that the Oscars are bias since most members never seen the majority of films released every year. Thank goodness for the Independent Spirit Awards and Film Festivals from Berlin to Tokyo because they are different than the Oscars.

Also I’ve noticed that when it comes to nominations for woc especially black women they are always nominated for supporting actress and even if they are nominated for Best lead actress I’ve noticed that they don’t win that much (even tho there are some actresses that deserve it , as a black girl how come there has been another best lead actress that won other than Halle Barry 🧐🧐)
love this from you!! I remember my image of the oscars (and award shows) was really shattered once Harvey Weinstein's abuse came to light. I found it so interesting to understand how he was such a big power in Hollywood and specifically at the award shows. Once I understood importance of the producer and the act of campaigning for films, I began to notice best film wins, best actor/actress, etc., would go to the films with the best public (and I'm sure private as well) campaign. its vids like this one that help educate!!
I loved the video. I know there's further explanations on how it works in the comments but I think videos like these help influence or force others to really think what these awards stand for and how they are flawed. At the end of the day art is subjective and can range in positive or negative opinions but if awards like these and others want to stay relevant they have to do better in being transparent and diverse (and not just use these as marketing).
i will say that the reason a lot of people win is not that they actually gave the best performance or made the best movie most of it just comes down to how much time and money they/their studio devoted to campaigning......a lot of great people who are unanimously seen as the obvious choice end up losing just because they didn't campaign with billboards/dinners/events as hard as their competitors did
Ranked voting is in my opinion the most fair way to vote with multiple candidates. Political voting should be done this way. I know it is in some places but hopefully it can become the standard way of doing things
lovely video babes!! I do think tho that their voting method is good - I see some people calling it proportional voting, in australia we use it for our elections and we call it preferential voting. It means that say, if film A initially wins, but most people who didn't put it first liked it less than film B, they can order their voting to reflect which film they want to win the least. As for the rules saying people can't 'buy' votes but we suspect they might, I believe what actually happens is that people don't outright give members of the academy money, but say, might invite them to a special screening and spend $10M on catering and entertainment, so the members will swing their way. It's incredibly preposterous, but people really value the Oscars that much because a $10M investment can mean $150M more dollars in box office. I like this voting system, though I'd prefer for each category to be voted upon by people who operate within that branch. It's better than letting a movie that got 32% of the votes win flat-out.

Hi trin! Love this video. The voting system you described for best picture is just the proportional voting system in action ( a proposed replacement for our current General Election first past-the-post-system, which is just whoever gets the most number 1 votes wins). It may sound unfair that if a film gets the most number 1 votes they don't win but this system is actually far more proportional in result. Think about it like this, if a film just got a win based on most number 1 votes then a film could have 39% votes, and another film could have 38% votes. Film 1 would win despite basically being rated as good as film 2. That is not fair. Proportional voting is way more fair than FPTP, as someone who studies voting and politics. It's called proportional voting for a reason, it creates a result of votes which are far more proportional to the way people actually voted, unlike FPTP which doesn't take into account ranked preferences. Another way to look at it is that FPTP means that a film could get 29% of the votes, meaning that 71% of the voters didn't want them to win, but that film could still win because all the other films also have low percentages. This means that despite the majority of people voting against the film, that film still wins. It is not fair (just like the FPTP system is not fair in real life either and also leads to disproportionate General Election results).

Yeah ok, I agree that just going by the most voted at first is flawed, but take the election system in my country. There are two terms, on the first one you vote for whoever you want, but if none of the politicians is elected with at least 50% + 1 vote they take the two who had the biggest percentages and make a second election between those two. I's far more intuitive than that and more honest with the voters.
I love the preferential ballot because it reassures voters that their vote will survive beyond their absolute favorite and have a stronger influence on the eventual winner.

Ranked choice voting is actually the best voting system out there. It’s literally made so the winner IS the overall best liked picture.

The Oscars use what’s called rank choice voting for best picture. As you described, there are definitely issues with it, but also pros. It does tend to result in awards going to more mediocre movies over great ones that might alienate older members of the academy. But ranked choice also can empower people to make their top pick more risky. You see a lot of people pushing for ranked choice voting for presidential elections because of this. The general rule in American politics is that you have to vote for either the democratic or republicIan nominee; if you don’t and vote for a green party candidate for example, many people will say your vote is basically wasted. Ranked choice gives you a chance to vote for a more risky or potentially polarizing nominee without worrying that you are doing that. If you did rank a third party candidate and they got the least votes, your vote cancels out and goes to your second choice. I wonder if any academy voters feel more empowered to rank parasite at the top of their list knowing that if it does not do well, they still have a chance to influence the decision. All this to say, I wish the Academy were more transparent about its results; I would love to see how the voting process actually works and how often they actually go into those second and third votes.
All of this is actually really interesting though. There’s a theorem called Arrow’s Theorem that states there is no fair voting system. If you’re ever curious, you should check it out.
A few other things to think about:
1. The largest voting body in the Academy is actors, which makes sense. But it also means that any film that appeals more to actors instantly has a better chance. Not during nominations, but for the final award.
2. With regards to cheating/buying the awards, I don’t disagree that they are paid for, but I think most studios get away with it because they aren’t explicitly handing out money. I wish you could have covered the idea of “campaigning” for an Oscar more, because that’s something I did not know was a thing until a few years ago. That’s more of the bribery you see, with studios hosting huge parties for Academy members and having their stars gladhand academy members and offer gift baskets and that sort of stuff. All that to say, still rigged. But I think you could have expounded more on how they are rigged.

Trin really exposing the academy like a boss
Think of it like this: there may be two movies that are similar that split the vote, and a third movie that is much different that got the most first place votes, but the majority of people didn't like. If 60% of the people think one of the first two should win, but neither got as many first place votes as the third film, should the third film which was the most disliked by most of the voters win? Ranked choice voting like this is good to avoid that situation.

Ya this is actually how I hope voting works soon in our actual elections. It’s a much more accurate representation of how people voted.
as for the oscars being unfair, i say YES, *especially* for animated movies. most of the wins go to disney/pixar films cause…..they’re the biggest studio. and when you consider the fact that the oscars is hosted on ABC in the US, which is owned by disney, it can be pretty easy to understand why. it’s rare when the win goes to a non-disney movie, like rango and into the spider-verse.
however, the part that boils my blood the most is that members of the academy don’t care about INTERNATIONAL animated films. there are so many sensational animated movies from around the world and almost nobody knows or cares about them because the oscars don’t. there was a voter back in 2015 who referred to the japanese film “the tale of the princess kaguya” and irish film “song of the sea” as “two obscure freakin’ chinese f--in’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw.” like excuse me, CHINESE???? as someone who saw both in THEATERS and considers them as my favorite movies of all time….i’m gonna say that’s not true. then they ended up voting for big hero 6 cause that was the one they saw with their kid. kaguya and song of the sea deserve SO much better lol. and even for this year’s nominees, there was only one international animated film that got nominated, “flee”. are “belle” and “the summit of the gods” a joke to you, academy???
i hope something changes in the future. people need to realize that animation is a beautiful art form that has the ability to have content for EVERYONE, not just children. oh yeah and watch all the films i mentioned, they all range from great to fantastic

@@eli-meli-mouse cause dreamworks is the bigger studio, i guess? the only anime studio the academy is really familiar with is ghibli, which have a handful of nominations like princess kaguya and howl’s moving castle, and even a win in the case of spirited away. actually the first and only non-ghibli anime movie to be nominated is mamoru hosada’s mirai. that was in *2019* . and looking at the noms from 2018, it’s utterly bonkers to see boss baby next to the literal work of art that is loving vincent. you think the first ever oil painted animated film deserves the same award as alec baldwin baby movie? lol ok oscars 😮💨

I saw a video about animations and the Oscars and the group who pick the movie and they're asked why they picked it they'll just say "I watched it with my kid" so they're not really actively seeing good animation movies which needs to change cuz there's obviously people who have a passion for it and also we need to get out of the mindset of associating animation with kids or that in order for an animation to be for adults it had to be super raunchy or violent

I knew someone who was on the Tony’s voting board. To my understanding, they had much less voters and shows found out who was on the board. He said shows would send him tons of gift baskets to get his vote. I don’t trust for a second that the Oscar’s voting is fair.

I hate that the Academy overlooks a lot of films by A24 like The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems.
Moonlight won best picture but the lighthouse is a double no no bc the oscars have always had an unfair bias against the horror genre

hey trin! love u so much and thank you for making this video, i think the topic is extremely important and i appreciate the work you’ve done to inform us on the biases of the oscar system. Something important to note though is that the voting method in particular is actually pretty fair mathematically, and arguably more fair than just picking the film with the most number one votes. With this voting method (called the Elimination Method or Instant-Runoff Method)the elimination and adding of votes keeps happening until a 50% win occurs. It’s really likely that the original film with the most votes will still win, because a lot of people will have ranked that film 2nd or 3rd, so it’ll win those extra votes anyways. The only way that the majority will shift from the original “winner” is if a LOT of people ranked the original winner LAST out of 5, because then there’s no chance in it getting the extra votes from the elimination. So in this case, yes that film technically got the most 1st place votes, but a lot of people liked it LEAST, and “new” winner has a LOT of first place votes and a lot of other votes ABOVE the “old” winner. So the “old” winner has a lot of people who really like the film, and a lot that don’t like the film (rank it last) whereas the “new” winner has a lot of people who like the film, a lot of people who kind of like the film, and VERY FEW people who don’t like the film. This voting method is very powerful and accurate because it takes into account which films people like AS WELL AS which films people DIDN’T like. This method is actually used in a lot of places for elections for govt. officials to prevent voting in something that a lot of people love but a lot of other people hate. That being said, the voting is certainly biased given the lack of diversity in the voters, and I completely agree that there needs to be a change in the Oscar voting system, but the METHOD itself is actually pretty sound. Sorry if i didn’t explain this well but there’s a lot on info about this voting method and why it actually protects against bias a fraud! again, thank you for the video, you made some amazing points, LOVE YOU!!!

For all my girls confused about the voting process, it's known as Proportional Representation and it's used in elections in some countries.
I've always seen the oscars as not really a competition, but as a compilation of films, actors, technicians, etc. that they want to represent the academy. The process as you explained is more about agreeability. EXACTLY! It's about what the academy can all agree upon as being the film, actor or technician that is representative of the current state of the academy whether its who they actually are or want to be perceived as. Loved the video!

My uncle was a part of the academy prior to his passing!! My great grandpa owned a large film wiping business and my uncle was a part of a sound editing business which did the sound on Star Wars! Both were members before they passed but my uncle had Alzheimer’s so for the years he was unable to partake, his wife voted for him which is interesting I think :)

I really enjoy your video about the Oscars Trin Lovell. I do believe that the Oscars have been in a decline and won't able to return to the glory day. Even though I do feel guilty watching the Oscars every year, I still keep this in mind: It's about the ratings and money. Not to mention that the Oscars are bias since most members never seen the majority of films released every year.

9:35 I actually agree with this system of voting completely, even in politics. Maine has it, its called rank-choince voting it allows you to have a voice and find the movie/candidate that most people will be at least satisfied with instead of a winner take all system

One concern with the point system is that average movies that are solidly in the middle of the pack earning 3 4 or 5 points consistently might be bumped up due to continuity in their voting and polarizing may have their places diminished due to fluctuating 7s and 1s but I still think it's more straight forward than the one the Oscar's have on place right now

love this from you!! I remember my image of the oscars (and award shows) was really shattered once Harvey Weinstein's abuse came to light. I found it so interesting to understand how he was such a big power in Hollywood and specifically at the award shows. Once I understood importance of the producer and the act of campaigning for films, I began to notice best film wins, best actor/actress, etc., would go to the films with the best public (and I'm sure private as well) campaign. its vids like this one that help educate!!

I loved the video. I know there's further explanations on how it works in the comments but I think videos like these help influence or force others to really think what these awards stand for and how they are flawed. At the end of the day art is subjective and can range in positive or negative opinions but if awards like these and others want to stay relevant they have to do better in being transparent and diverse (and not just use these as marketing).

i will say that the reason a lot of people win is not that they actually gave the best performance or made the best movie most of it just comes down to how much time and money they/their studio devoted to campaigning......a lot of great people who are unanimously seen as the obvious choice end up losing just because they didn't campaign with billboards/dinners/events as hard as their competitors did

Ranked voting is in my opinion the most fair way to vote with multiple candidates. Political voting should be done this way. I know it is in some places but hopefully it can become the standard way of doing things
lovely video babes!! I do think tho that their voting method is good - I see some people calling it proportional voting, in australia we use it for our elections and we call it preferential voting. It means that say, if film A initially wins, but most people who didn't put it first liked it less than film B, they can order their voting to reflect which film they want to win the least.
As for the rules saying people can't 'buy' votes but we suspect they might, I believe what actually happens is that people don't outright give members of the academy money, but say, might invite them to a special screening and spend $10M on catering and entertainment, so the members will swing their way. It's incredibly preposterous, but people really value the Oscars that much because a $10M investment can mean $150M more dollars in box office. Members of the academy also don't watch every film and that really grinds my gears :, )

I like this voting system, though I'd prefer for each category to be voted upon by people who operate within that branch. It's better than letting a movie that got 32% of the votes win flat-out.
