I love those dodgey repairs. There was almost no way to know that de-soldering would break the pads over twisting. Now we ALL know thanks to you. That’s how we progress and learn
Desoldering doesn’t break the pads - that only happens when you don’t heat up the pins enough to melt the solder and just try to yank the component off. That’s only because he’s inexperienced, not because this is an impossible operation. People who don’t have experience in surface mount soldering almost always rip parts off the board and it almost always results in trashing the entire board; I’ve seen it more times than I care to count
Something about breaking stuff to gain knowledge really doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just ugly reality but it's still a time of mourning if you cause it to happen regardless of your expertise.

It doesn't, because the solder won't stick to the PCB material (usually glass fiber with epoxy resin). What you COULD do is recreate a pad with part trace from thin copper plate, scratch the remaining trace, use cyanoacrylate or epoxy to glue it in place of the ripped pad, with a little solder, connect the trace parts and eventually solder a capacitor onto that. And hope the glue you used to glue the pad with, holds well enough. I've seen it work, I was able to do it once with more light-weight SMD parts, but a capacitor is quite a heavy SMD part... your milage may vary.

Ok so tips for you: 1. Buy Amtech NC-559 Flux - before any solder heating use this stuff. 2. Before desolder always add some new solder to lower melting temperature. 3. For SMD use hot Air station - even cheap one will do with some practice. 4. Change your solder tip to chisel head. 5. Always heat PCB pads, not pins.
@@CocoaEm The TS100 is good but I found because it's pretty low power it doesn't stay hot especially if the heat is getting pulled into a ground plane or other heatsink.
I prefer small conical tips to chisel tips, because it's fine enough for small and hard to reach solder joints, but you can still do bigger solder joints by using the side of the cone.
You have to try a tip like the C4 for the TS100. I soldered with a lot of irons and a lot of different tips. Once I tried that tip I never used another. I even solder 0603 components with it 😂 As for the flux I found out that the Chinese stuff from Mechanic isn't bad at all. @@LysFGC Yeah, but loan words often don't follow the definitions from the origin language. Chef specifically refers to a cook in English, but in French it refers to the chief or boss. "the region free loader" as it says. i tried it my self even though it hasnt been updated since 2008, and it works fine.
I've used the plier twist method on some surface mount capacitors for the sound circuit on an old gameboy color. It works great just requires patience and going slow. Though ideal method for removal is hot air rework.
why not just two soldering irons?? And some flux? Then you don’t have the issue of heating up nearby capacitors more than they need to be with a hot air station
@@Caffeine_Addict_2020 Solder Tweezers can work as well but they're a more niche tool and most people don't have them at their disposal. I thought that was the path this video was going at first honestly
@@Caffeine_Addict_2020ngl tho. I wonder why they make these boards so fragile to begin with. Rather than just gluing some copper the board, it should be *part* of the board for it to not be able to be ripped from it. And i wonder why the SMD caps aren't made to be easier to change. All this feels like design flaws
@@SeleDreams probs cost, although I'm not super familiar with PCB manufacturing. I mean for the capability these things have they cost just about nothing, now. And it doesn't take a ton of effort/experience not to snap the pads off, so it's def not worth whatever the fix would cost

can't you just, add a bunch of solder on scuffed pads? Doesn't it typically reconnect to the lead wire or am i dumb
No
Amogus
Yea, it doesn't work like that unfortunately
When you remove a pad, it comes with the copper layer of it, so it remains just being the board with nothing

1. Buy Amtech NC-559 Flux - before any solder heating use this stuff.
2. Before desolder always add some new solder to lower melting temperature.
3. For SMD use hot Air station - even cheap one will do with some practice.
4. Change your solder tip to chisel head.
5. Always heat PCB pads, not pins.
his iron doesnt look very good at all the first thing id do is get a ts-100.
@@zxcvb_bvcxzdo you run it at 12v?it isnt bad at higher voltage but huge ground planes will be a pain with any iron without a board heater
You have to try a tip like the C4 for the TS100. I soldered with a lot of irons and a lot of different tips. Once I tried that tip I never used another. I even solder 0603 components with it 😂
As for the flux I found out that the Chinese stuff from Mechanic isn't bad at all. I use RMA-UV10 on a regular basis and if I need something a bit more powerful I use RMA-UV35 or some old-school rosin stuff I have left from my grandfather.

One for playing and one for backup. I love the motion controls. The Wii is pretty much my favorite Nintendo system, if not my favorite console period (PlayStation 3 is a pretty close second). I don't have very many games for the Wii but I love all the ones I have including the lame games like "Shadows of Katmai," because it just has a quirky charm and cheesiness enhanced by the Wiimote controls you just can't get anywhere else.
That rocks!!
I looked it up in jisho and ジャンク品 just means "defecive" or "item sold as is" rather than just junk.
Maybe but ジャンク is literally the english word junk and the kanji next to it just means item
Japanglish has a tendency to take English words and change their meaning quite a bit. I can see how the root was probably "junk goods" but give it awhile with people who don't know English associating it with different things at the meaning will change. Happens all the time.
@@LysFGC Yeah, but loan words often don't follow the definitions from the origin language. Chef specifically refers to a cook in English, but in French it refers to the chief or boss. Very impressive repair. I love that rush when something you fix out of the garbage comes back to life with that first power on.
The only reason the discs didn't work even without removing region lock, that was only cause you had to enable ALL of the region locking hacks (other than the wii channels of course)
edit: there is also the homebrew app TinyLoad, which can load any disc and play them, no matter what region it is.
Hot air stations and regular single tip irons are more readily available. I prefer hot air for safer extraction but if you're in a pinc the twist method works if you are careful and slow.
@@oOignignoktOo1 Hot air is also far more versatile, soldering tweezers are only really useful for SMTs with only two pins
Isn't hot air risky for electrolytic capacitors ? Since it can make them blow up
For SMD soldering I 100% recommend getting some flux, makes the job a ton easier. Nice fix tho!
