The word "off" in Japan is a synonym for discount. For example, their version of half-priced books is Book Off. So hard off isn't much of a stretch. Instead of naming it off, hard off would mean very discounted. I even saw a sign for a store named Jack Off. This would be like calling it Jack's discount store.

The "hard" in "hard off" refers to hardware. Japanese shorten the word "hardware" to just "hard" and "software" to just "soft". You can buy stuff like old DVD players, random TV remotes and unknown cables, old PC parts, old home appliances such as microwaves and takoyaki makers, etc.

Just a tip, to remove stickers, soak them in regular pharmacy alcohol for a minute or two. The alcohol will disolve the adhesive and you'll be able to lift the sticker with no problems.
You can even use contact cleaner or 70% alcohol to not damage the plastic.
Also to adjust the potentiometer, you absolutely need a tester or you won't be able to read anything and you risk putting a too high/too low value which can burn out the laser.

If there is one defining feature of western consumers its that they don't care until AFTER they make the purchase, THEN they complain. The idea that you don't have to buy something if you have an issue with it is genuinely something that got lost somewhere in the past few decades. People would rather just tweet #RightToRepair from their new iPhone 18 pro maxes, then just not buy that unrepairable device and buy a repairable device instead.

I recently got out my old PS1 and it had an old game in it from back in the day... When I took it out it brought out some of the drive spindle pieces with it!
I did a quick and nasty DIY fix with my oldest kid and got it working again but ran into the same problem with it being super fussy about what it would and wouldn't play. But you know what isn't? A soft modded PS3. That sucker plays everything I've thrown at it, discs I marked as bad burns, skipping cut scenes, skipping music (I'm looking at you Wip3out and Tekken 3) only downside is no beatmania... As someone who has ZERO soldering skills it's an easy mod and the recent updates to Swiss (Homebrew OS) have really made it the premium way to run games off solid state media for the GC. You remind me of me, I definitely know the pain of trying to burn games to a disc now and whether or not if they'll work. Earlier this year I went and ordered an A/V cable for my Dreamcast - I had not used my DC since 2006 or so, and severely misplaced the original cable that I still can't find. Anyway, I started looking into used game prices, decided fuck that noise, and opted for burning game images to disc. Found some online resources for fairly better quality CD's than just Verbatim, ordered an entire stack, and then later found out each game's image is missing one or two minor things just to make the image small enough to fit on a CD-R, not only that but I then encountered games with multuple discs, like Shenmue, and one disc is too large still for CD-R's, so I had to try and find larger media CD-R's, tried burning that disc, and it STILL does not work.
So, yeah, at some point I will probably mod my DC with GDemu or what ever it's called. I also got into burning PS1 games recently when I looked into jailbreaking my PS3.

6:57 Your answer lies at the top of that page, getting a pre burnt swiss disc and a SD2SP2 adapter will serve basically the same purpose as a GCloader but for cheap while also keeping the disc drive, it's what i've got goin and it works pretty flawlessly for 95% of games.
Also those phillips discs should work, the Gamecube is very picky so you might have to tweak the pot to absolute perfection to get it to read, it took me about an hour to get it dialed in perfectly to read my non brand DVD-R's you could also try a laser from a different gamecube by just swapping the driveboard with the Xeno on it to another disc assembly

You should make more gaming console restoration videos Matt. I agree with you, solving the puzzle that comes with each device is the most interesting aspect of the device itself. All the restoration videos now are just the generic hgih speed facebook watch video without narration where the guy just restores the plastic/metal and puts it back together. Your series is truly unique and hopefully the view counts reflect that!

For whatever reason it's really good at loosening adhesive. I've used it to remove old stickers from pre-owned games, and to move stickers from gameboy carts onto new shells. You have to be kind of liberal, but it works super well and dries out nicely.

(The games alone are like 300$ so i basically got the ds's i wanted for free.) The guy even tossed in a n64 rumble pack with the box for free but sadly someone left battery's in it so i will have to see if that can be fixed.
Its rare but you can find quality lots on ebay if you know what your looking for and check daily, Or sometimes hourly if your looking to snag something cheap and you just refresh the search sorted by newly listed.

The one faded memory card reader door on the right side can be cleaned back to the original colour, I did it to mine , What you do is go to a woman's hair dye supply store, Like Sally Beauty, they sell a bleach gel for hair. What you do is rub it on the door and place it in the sun for a few hours, then take it in, wash it off, dry it, then do it again, repeat this about 3-4 times, And the yellow colour will turn back to the original white.

You'd be surprised how easily people can assume a malfunctioning part of an electronic device is broken, when in reality it's just dirty and in need of a quick cleaning.
I know this from experience: I thought the disc reader in my PlayStation 3 was busted for _two years_ until just two weeks ago, when I took some alcohol and two cotton swabs to clean and dry the laser lens. It now works just as well as it did five years ago. It took me three minutes to do. It wasn't broken, it was just dirty.
Moral of the story? If something's going wrong with your favorite electronic device, properly clean the defective part before you do anything else.

One solution for the lack of mini-DVDs when you have an open-topped gamecube would be to just use a craft knife or other very sharp point to just cut it off - making the DVD spindle into a makeshift lathe. This is no doubt _extremely_ healthy for the drive assembly and motor, of course.

You are right, Gamecube shells that accommodated a full size DVD did exist back in the day. Nobody makes them now because Gamecube is readily playable on the more common Wii which like you said, doesn't even require discs if you use a USB loader. Your best bet is finding one on the used market. IcedCube and GC Viper were the brands.

Yo! Pro tip for stickers. Try going over it a few times with a hairdryer. If you give it enough heat, the adhesive should melt, and the sticker should peel right off. But there might be gunk leftover.
I've used this trick to reshell GBA games, keeping the oem stickers, and to remove crappy paper stickers from game boxes.
I haven't tried with a heat gun, but I imagine it'd be easier to melt the plastic too.

It might sound a little odd but could you possibly just trim down the cd to a smaller size if you knew what size to trim it down to? In theory it might be fine if you are willing to take a couple of attempts and waste a few decent cds.
I could imagine there are multiple ways you could attempt this.
Option 1: Use a broken/sacrificial mini-cd to create a outline of the smaller disk on the larger and carefully cut off the excess.
Option 2: Find the correct radius of mini-disk. Place a rod of some form in the middle of the larger disk, tie a string with the correct radius as it's length to a sharply tipped rod. After that you should only have to repetitively move the sharply tipped rod around the tool until you have a deep groove. Eventually you will want to remove the outer part of the disc carefully then smooth the edge of the new homebrew mini-disc.
Remember this is assuming that you will not need the rest of the disk for data space as the Gamecube cannot utilize that part of the disk.
