There are a lot great deals to have if people are willing to put a little extra effort in their research. I slowed greatly in my watch consumption. But I have been fortunate for a few reasons. Spend a lot of time hunting and be constant in your search. Be ready to move fast. Great video Bill. I'm always amazed at how easily you can take a subject that may be a little complex and explain it in a way that is easy for us to understand and use in our watch collecting journey. Best regards, Brian
Hi Bill, the primary and secondary markets are kind of moving together. I remember a couple of years ago Nomos Glashütte started something interesting. They said: "Ok, instead of fighting the gray market, we supply them ourselves. And we open our own online store." Watches that were less popular, maybe B-Stock, etc. were given to the "gray market" and special models were sold through their own store. And then all the brick and mortar ADs were really "pissed off". Some of them even stopped working together with Nomos. Granted, they were not dependent on Nomos for their businesses and if it would have been Rolex switching the strategy, they would think and say differently. Take care and Merry Christmas 🎄
Hi Thomas, that is interesting that Nomos used the secondary market outlets for some models over their ADs; however, some day in the not too distant future, the brick and mortar store may go the way of all the Barnes & Nobel shops that used to dot the mall and Tower Records giant shops. Merry 🎅 Take care, Bill

The secondary market can be very good when currency values are changine. When the dollar value went up against the Euro and Swiss Franc because the FED raised interest rates, the ADs didn’t change the price. But on the secondary market companies were able to get watches cheaper, buying in Europe, and pass on some savings (obviously this doesn’t work for high demand watches like Rolex, PP, and AP, but does for very high quality but lower demand watches).
hi, bill. i can see you have a lot of high horology pieces. what are the tips can you give to service these pieces in the future or even tips for servicing "regular" watches. thanks.
Jogie, I rotate my collection and so each watch is only used one or two times a fortnight. I let them unwind fully and take good care of them. When they "tell me" they need service, I just send them in. My best tip is, know your watch and don't send it in for service on a suggested timeframe... pay attention of how you use and only get service when needed. Take care Bill
Great video! I get really confused by the calander , world time and chronograph model numbers from patek. Is there there any site / video which kind of clarifies it and directs towards good buys in secondary market for different models... like under 30k price point for a decent patek with a decent patek complication. Thankyou very much!
Just discovered your site, fascinating, very educational, im just beginning, and refreshing to get away from the usual comparisons to you know who, which to me seems more like moneymaking than a hobby. Looking forward to your videos Bill.
With the strong dollar, buying new Grand Seikos direct from Japan gave you an approximate 30 percent discount before sales taxes (although this favorable currency arbitrage will not continue indefinitely). I admit to being a Jomashop and Shopworn junky. Both sellers feature new old stock and permit returns if you a watch that doesn’t fit. I have had enough experiences to state that both sellers stand behind what they sell, although Jomashop is larger and less personal than Shopworn. Although I obviously like bargains, the watches of independents like Habring, RGM and others like Stefan Ketelaars are often not to be had at bargain prices in the secondary markets and one should ultimately be more interested in getting a more bespoke and even customized watch instead of worrying about savings. While the longer and more frequently an independent produces watches, the more likely one might find them in the secondary market but often the pricing is higher so the only benefit is being able to acquire the watch sooner than waiting for your reference to be made. But you miss out on customization options and the special joy of directly communicating with the watchmaker on various options and selections. One often overlooked sources of preowned watches are new watch ADs who have opened vintage and preowned departments and brick and mortar vintage and preowned sellers like Second Time Around. As for the ADs, you can go in and try before you buy. They tend to buy discriminately, often from collectors or(if deceased) collectors’ families and often are dealing in watches of which they were the original sellers. They prescreen and service what they sell before offering it to the public and they tend to stand behind what they sell. I would rather pay a little more to brick and mortar sellers than on preowned watches bought online even though Chrono24’s escrow arrangement is comforting. Everybody has to find what works best for them which sometimes requires learning from the school of hard knocks of which I am a graduate.
@@watchartsci Very trustworthy and the service is first rate. A while back I bought a watch from them, had it in my possession for 24 hours, changed my mind about the watch, then sent it back to them and ordered something else. They had no qualms with that. As far as Grey Market goes, Grey Market watches are authentic watches made at the authentic factory; they are, however, lacking a U.S. WARRANTY! ( Let's not forget, Amazon does sell Grey Market watches - be careful! ) My advice on buying Pre-owned ( non-quartz ) watches: NEVER buy a watch where you cannot see the movement - at least a crisp photo of a movement. ( If the seller is too lazy to photograph the movement, or too lazy to purchase an inexpensive case opening tool so as to allow them to photograph the movement, DO NOT buy their questionable watch! When looking at the movement, always examine the screws on the bridges, and elsewhere, for abuse. A regulator way out of center ( too fast or too slow ) is a sign the watch needs service yesterday - and someone has been in there! ( It is safe to assume any used watch will need servicing sooner than a new watch. ) My best advice: research, research, research; if you are very familiar with the workings of a watch ( even though, like me, your terminology may be off kilter ) you will be hard to take advantage of!
