Now that I've been playing marching snare more than ever and am likely going to march for the first time this summer, I can tell any person that is thinking to themselves right now that rudiments are "boring" or "useless" that once you get them down, they're really a ton of fun to work with and will make drumming in-general so much easier and fluid. Gabe calls the paradiddle-diddle "boring" for the sakes of the video, but I honestly find it one of the most fun since it's an easy one to do fast. If a bit of technique training and rudiments can get me to playing top-grade solos in my state, it can take you much further. They are your best tools...!
I am a current DBO Academy Student ( Level 5 out of 5, 1 being a Beginner ) and at $195 for a year is Very Well worth it. Even the youtube courses are awesome. Gabe is an excellent teacher, and we do live chats as a group now and then. Great stuff. Keep up the good work Marian.
Holy crap. All of a sudden I feel like its my life's mission to incorporate paradiddlediddle into beats. This makes it so much more interesting to use!
@@DrumBeatsOnline By the way, do not worry about those moments when "inspiration leaves", it is ok. It is unrealistic to expect anyone to have the same level of energy all the time, look at nature and find strength, even nature has its rests... winter... If Gabe pretends or let other around to let him surrender to their expectations, that will only extend the period of "winter". Let Winter be for we know after winter comes Spring! ;) Your eyes look tired... Rest My Friend, Rest... I hope that just as I receive your instruction on drums, you would receive what I share, without expectation, only shearing as a candle shares its flame yet it doesn't diminish its own... When the opportunity arises (if you haven't already), join DBO academy. I've been a member for nearly a week and it's already changed the way I think and approach the drums. My playing has never felt so good.
Bro!!! This is my favourite Rudiment. I do it to increase hand speed and I enjoy the way you used different surfaces I can do this on my bed and pillows
As I got farther into the video I found a lot of this stuff are things I already do while learning by ear but without understanding the underlying theory behind it, so thanks for clarifying that.
There is probably enough material in this one video to keep me going for at least a year. Excellent stuff! He makes it look easy but once you take those rudiments and start moving around the kit, that becomes the test of whether or not you actually know the rudiment. The new sounds you hear will throw you off but don’t give up. Keep practicing! You’ll get it eventually. *And don’t forget to reverse hand order.
Kinda funny, because that pretty much what I've been practicing tonight. Pretty cool tough to see you make it too another level and see all you can do with that. And by the way, is good to see you back.
🤘Your videos and instruction are definitely getting more creative. Love it. I also noticed something about the studio.... Is just me or do we, as drummers, like to collect Snares?
I mean... I see what your point is but I think at this point, if you want to be able to play the last step quickly, the most efficient would be to start working on it directly as it's so far away from the original paradiddle diddle... But in the end I agree, working on your rudiments is great, applying them on the kit is better !
Epic lesson. My brain always goes "boom" though when I try to change a rudiment which is in triplets in to eighth notes. Yet.. Never a problem changing a pattern which is eighth notes in to triplets. Weird. I will persist!
You actually counted the rudiment out wrong. It wouldn't be 1 & a 2 & a Its more 1 la li 2 la li What you counted is a set of eighth notes with a sixteenth note on the end. Similar to the cadence of a horse galloping.
Man that blue lighting looks epic on the snare rack. Great lesson, one of my favorite rudiments.
Thanks Haiden!!
Really changes the perspective of we look at rudiments, I really needed this, thanks Gabe
That's awesome Justin!! I'm so glad I could help.
It’s always a good day when Gabe posts. Especially after his break

I know the masking of the words at 4:10 wasn't easy. I respect that, those little details are what make your videos so clean.

The first time someone gave you a pad and said play rudiments....Ummmm it took me three tries to even get close enough auto correct would work
What is a rudiment?
A simple thing that goes r l r l rl!!?
