It is so nice to see a left handed carver, I am left handed myself and just started to carve I hope to get as good as yourself, but I have a very long way to go yet, happy carving
I hope neither of you take this the wrong way, but your style of figures, especially this Santa and the 4” fisherman are my favorite. But, Doug Linker’s teaching/video style is my favorite. Boy if he did a video on some of your carvings I would be in heaven. Probably not likely so I’ll be taking a shot at some of these anyways. Thanks for sharing!
I'm always amazed at how detailed you can get with that meat cleaver, lol & at record speed! I can't seem to get hair fine & even enough, even with my micro v-tools. Thanks for ALL your videos. 🏆
I have always enjoyed watching you carving. It is now much more educational with the added text explanations. You paused occasionally to pose the carving - excellent! You are lucky to have nice white pine source. This is your best video for me, and I watch most of them.
Thanks Jim. Most time I’m in a rush doing things. Just because I have so much to get done each day. With this video I spent a little more time doing it
I have never carved anything before but I am going to try this. My Dad learned to carve as 2nd mate on a cargo ship that ran steel on the Great Lakes. He could take a block of wood and whittle a ship that he would put in a bottle. I want to do that some day. :)
Kevin, I love your stuff, beautiful carvings. I was just wondering if it’d be possible at the beginning of each video to post the size of the block of wood you start with, us newbies would appreciate it
Awesome 👍👍 in russia a guy I met uses a carving tool it's kinda the same as that two sides r sharp the top and bottom it's a carving tool there for doing relief work too
Another beauty carving, well done Kevin. I carve a bit but I would be useless with that big knife, for that matter I’m almost useless with a detail knife, lol.
Thanks for this awesome video :) I'm still a fairly beginner carver but followed along...pausing the video lots. Took me about 5-6 hours to do this carving! Accidentally made a really short body so mine looks like he's sitting on his bum and has a very gnomish look to him.
It really doesn’t matter so much how it looks. Mine looked awful first when I started. I just kept doing it and they gradually got a little better. Just practice lots and they will get much better in time
Caught using a Detail knife, Is it home made also. I made one 40+ yrs ago from a needle file, based on the #11 Exacto blade, over the years and numerous tip breaks it's almost to short to use. Like the vid.
Love the carving. I watched your video to see how to carve the eyes. However, from that point on most of your carving was out of the frame and all we could see was your right hand. Here’s a suggestion. Put you a dot or mark on the table and keep your carving over at center point so it stays in the view of the camera.
Just ran across your video. 5 years later. Like your style.. I am left handed…. You’re the first left handed carver I have come across.. it turned on the light. BTW, what type wood are you using. Thanks. Joe…
I love how you just carve with a few words for instructions on the screen. It is very relaxing to watch. I would love to know how to carve Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, but I'm still trying to get better at the beginner stuff first. You did a great job on the video and on the carving. Subscribed and Liked.
I’ve never soaked any pine. I have carved some that I had the same problem with. My knife would dull very quickly but for the most part I find the white pine pretty decent to carve
Hi Kevin! As a fellow woodcarver since I was 13 (now 65), I truly appreciate all of your videos! I wanted to share a few tips on painting that I learned while attending the Geisler-Moroder School of Woodcarving in Elbigenalp; Austria. www.woodcarvingschool.com/ 1) Use standard watercolor paints (children's paints will do), toned down with a bit of water-base brown stain. This gets rid of the stark bright colors, and creates a more antique or old look. 2) Paint one section at a time (arm, leg, pant, shoe, etc.), and then wipe some of the paint off with a damp cloth, allowing the darker tone to remain in the creases and cracks, creating a shadow affect. 3)When the carving is completely painted and wiped with a damp cloth, use 000 steel wool over the entire carving. 4) Finish with a paste wax, and allow it to dry adequately before buffing.
I really enjoy your work, I have copied a few of them, you do some nice carvings, easy enough to copy...I find carving very relaxing, it helps me maintain my sanity...by the way are you from San Diego, and is your mothers name Tuesday???
Hi Kevin, if I’m right you use eastern white pine, correct me if I’m wrong. My question is where do you get your wood? BTW, I love your videos, you are so talented 🙂
I attempted this today. It looks nothing like yours lol, I need to work on facial features a lot more 🤔 hopefully you'll do more tutorials in the future 😉👍🏻
It doesn’t matter if it looks the same or not. The main thing is getting the practice of doing it. I’m so busy right now I don’t have much time to spare with the videos. I will keep them coming though when time allows
I just discovered your site. Beautiful work. I do wish you spent 20 seconds or so at video's end to show off the finished piece. It would allow me time to really take it all in. The thumbnails are too small for these old eyes.
love your carving! and the great videos. easy to follow but very challenging for me. I began 2 months ago but am finding I have a small aptitude. I was able to carve your "jolly little elf" (except for the eyes, and not quite as well). this is a great companion and a bit easier. do you have a facebook page? thank you again for sharing.
I get the most of my customers either ordering through a message on Facebook or to my email. The thing is, I’m so blocked up with orders now for Christmas I can’t take anymore till after Christmas

I've seen him say before he goes to Lowes for pine, but I haven't seen him specify what he's buying exactly. His pine is probably not the same as mine or yours.
Great video could you slow down when you look at your work for a second or two to give us enough time to see what you just cut away. Everything is so fast , as a novice it's hard to follow along especially when you cut the nose and eyes also as your carving you drop below the camera and we can't see what was just carved. I'm learning alot from your videos I just wish I could take some classes. Thanks for teaching us newbies.
This is fine for a Novice to try. You may not carve it the same as someone who has been carving for years but it’s all about the practice. The more you do it the better you will get
Thanks Tracy. The very first carving I did I carved it from Jack pine. It was tough nails. The white pine I’m using is pretty soft for the most part. Some is like butter to cut. It’s all I used for the past few years.
I just made a comment and it vanished I don`t know how I did it but suffice it to say good one Kevin you must get a bit sore in the fingers as this is a longer video but good tutorial nevertheless, regards from John in England.

Just tried this as my first ever whittle. Its wasn't marvellous but I learned a lot. Thanks.

Love it -really like the layered beard
Thanks Doug. I think I like it this way more too. I’ve been doing it this way for awhile, trying to get better at it.
Still find it amazing Doug that Kevin does his work with such a clumsy looking knife..brilliant!

Love watching. I hope a lady can do it! Yay! The holidays are almost here.
Thanks Kendra. I’m pretty well sure a lady can do it
Feels like there's a step or two missing.
Looks smaller than 2 x 2, IU am carving right along with you and mine is much wider even after whittling a lot off
It was 2" wood that I used
Hi Kevin. Wonderful instructive video. Could you refer to your knife as a sheep’s foot knife?
Thanks Barbara. It’s a repurposed fish knife

Thanks Joe. It's white pine
thanks for the videos. one question, what kind of wood do you use?
Great job Kevin..why white pine instead of bass wood
Thanks Jack. There’s no basswood available here where I live. The pine is trucked in from another province but it is cheaper than basswood
Clap clap clap. Just beautiful.
Is that a repurposed boning knife?
Love it.
Yes

Hello Kevin
Do you start from a rough out or pattern?
It didn’t look like a square block.

Thank you
Thanks Chris. Most time on these little fellows I start from a block. This piece of wood was just tapered in at the top part
I love the carving. However a novice isn't going to be able to cut through white pine. Do you always use pine for your carvings?
