The way I hear the intro from the recording is that the first note is a kick not a floor tom stroke

You're doing it wrong. Covering Travis Barker is mainly about looking at your crotch, then looking up, then at your crotch, etc.... it's his version of a backbeat. Also, you need a mohawk and some tattoos... then it will be an authentic cover.
