_______________ PUNK ROCK DRUMMING: HOW TO NOT LOCK UP -- Everything is going fine...and then it happens. You start to feel the burn...then you completely lock up! Playing at high tempos can be a strain, but if we apply correct technique it's much easier and more sustainable. In the drum lesson I show you the techniques I use to play up tempo grooves (like punk rock). Leave a comment and let me know what your fav punk song is!

Showing my age here - favorite is "Did You No Wrong" - Sex Pistols
Close seconds: "Public Image" - Public Image, "I Just Wanna Have Something To Do" - Ramones, "Ever Fallen In Love" - Buzzcocks, "Give Me Everything" - Magazine.
Where's the Bad Brains love? I'm surprised no ones mentioned them here.
You did, and that's good enough. Bad Brains are one of the greatest punk bands of all time.
arre1908 I got that P.M.A.!
Bad Brains are also sexist homophobic people..
sam is not a pear that was 40 years ago, get over it
Nobodys perfect Sam E.
My favourite punk rock song is Ticket to ride by The Beatles. I mosh everytime I ear it.
Lmao

Solid punk track indeed brother ... nice choice...
Lol
The Beatles arnt punk

I start to die during the 2 no verse
Scott raynor one of the best punk drummers
Scott raynor one of the best punk drummers
try dumpweed...
Nowadays i still lock up on Dammit man
32 y/o drummer since middle school; this video cleaned up SO many issues for me. I have been wrecking my wrists, elbows, and forearms between drumming and chasing my two toddler boys. My dad arms are super grateful for the awesome tweaks and techniques. Subbed!
So glad to hear it Michael!
Nofx- linoleum or Streetlight Manifesto - Everything Went Numb :3 and great lesson, helps alot!!!
j
NOFX- the decline! It’s a dbeat symphony haha.
Anything by F.E.A.R. I didn't realize it when I was listening to this band as a teenager, but these guys could play. Especially the drummer on Camarillo.
Yeah....bad day bad day bad day bad day bad day.......
No way - Adolescents
Depression - Black Flag
I'm not a loser - Decendants
Nofx "the decline " hands down the most epic best song ever written
Nervous Breakdown by Black Flag
best punk song ever
+Angel Barron Ha, I knew BF would be one of the first bands mentioned
YES
anything from the Bad Religion Brooks Wackerman era. Brooks is the man.
romjab oh ya now he's with avenged sevenfold and he's so sweet
Tre Cool had no problems with locking up. That dude is a monster
tingkagol truth
Same with Matt Kelly; that guy can just play so many different rhythms at once.
Pretty sure he has severe ADHD (not making fun, I believe I read that somewhere). I wonder if that helped him play the way he does.
Same with Marky Ramone
@@punkrockcentral1812 That Marky Right hand technique
it was really interesting to see you blasting the drumset like this. Always thought you had the magical touch of groove and tasty licks, but not this. Fantastically done!
Thanks for this, Stephen. I am guilty of muscling the stick instead of letting it do the work. Nice clear instruction on the fundamental difference between Moler and Gladstone. Don't understand how anyone can hit the thumbs down on this.
I highly recommend listening to the album Trashed by Lagwagon with their first drummer Derrick Plourde (RIP). My favorite track off that album is Stokin' The Neighbors. I think an amazing and unknown modern punk drummer is Oded Cohen from Not On Tour. Super fast and technical punk drumming.
I love Lagwagon. Such a tight band
Stephen Taylor hey thanks for the quick reply! Definitely check out Not On Tour... sorta like a female-fronted Lagwagon. Propagandhi's Jordy Samolesky is also amazing. You might also like Night Fever from Denmark. Lemme know what you think! I love punk/drum talk.
By the way, have you ever seen how Erik Sandin plays fast? He does some sort of 3 over 2 pattern with his hi-hat/kick drum.
Two of my fav bands! Saw both in one gig in Holland, Not on Tour opening for Lagwagon. It was such a great performance by both, as always!
To me, Punk rock is like a first serious girlfriend, I don't love her anymore, I never try to run into her, but deep down, I'll never fully get over her lol. I can't remember what my favourite song was........but like almost anyone who's been in a band as a kid in the early 2000's, I sure remember playing Linoleum by NOFX lol.
Perfect analogy lol
Stephen Taylor Thanks mate, cool video btw.
NOFX - Everything from Punk in Drublic
Or the decline in it’s entirety.
Any Operation Ivy fans??
NickBeanDrums oh hell yesss
YES!!!! I love The Crowd, Sound System, Knowledge, The entire album dude!!!!
Fuck yeah!
I have hand drawn fliers from 88-89 just found in my file cab, crazy
The greatest creation of the Bay Area, hands down!
holidays in the sun to me is the blueprint to punk
That song is amazing
I really liked how you emphasised that drumming isn't just about the use of individual techniques but the combination! Keep up the good work!
I want a full length video on this one, or 100 videos on all the techniques :)! You rock, man!
My legs are what get tight haha
Been playing skate and hard-core punk for 27 years. Every once in a while I still cramp up in my thumb meat at the hand when we have a few 200+ bpm songs back to back. I dont always have great stick control when that happens.
Turbonegro - Get it on!
My favorite punk songs drum wise are a tie between _"Dirt by The Stooges"_ (Proto-Punk), _"Mr. Spooky by Mr. Epp"_ (Grunge/Punk Rock), _"Let it all be by The Melvins"_ (Grunge/Punk Rock), _"Yukon Fang/Enjoy The View by Fang"_ (Grunge/Punk), _"Dead Billy by Big Black"_ (Grunge/noise punk rock), _"Human Fly by The Cramps"_ (Punk), _" Eucalyptus by Scratch Acid/The Jesus Lizard"_ (Grunge) and _"If You Must by Nirvana"_ (Grunge) if you listen to them you'll notice the drumming is simple but it sounds *awesome!*.
I just recently found your channel, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Many thanks for your work, sir!
+Waqqiz Glad to have you hangin around
dude, your lessons are amazing. thank you so much... i'm back playing drums after 8 years and its really helping me get back on track. keep it uppppp!!!! well its almost 2years late but 2 of my favorite punk albums are fresh fruit for rotten vegetable and milo goes to college. the one and only germs album also have a place in my heart
And now we dance - The Vandals!
Oh man! My favorite genre :) lotta good techniques my own drum teacher emphasizes in our lessons. "Think down, throw down"
As for your question, most stuff on Fat Wreck Chords is gold. Especially been digging Bad Cop/ Bad Cop lately. Also been jamming to the Menzingers, the Muffs, Jeff Rosenstock (more alternative-y), the Flatliners and Against Me!, to name a few more (but believe me I could go on for daaaaays lol).
Stickin' in my eye by NOFX
Amazing lesson. Not sure how I missed this. Love that ride cymbal.
My favorite pop punk song is "me for me" by a band called Quit, some of my favorite drummers from the old 90's punk era were Derrick Plourde from Lagwagon,Mark Moreno from Fifteen,Aaron Cometbus from Crimpshrine and Pinhead Gunpowder,Dan Panic from Screeching Weasel, and Bill Stevenson from The Descendents and ALL just to name a few. I am 42 yrs old and punk music is still my first choice in music and that's all I practice to especially melodic hardcore !
probably has to be holiday in Cambodia by the DK's. also much love to bad brains and agent orange's first album!
Seeing Red or In My Eyes by Minor Threat
Great picks!!
By the way-Great series Steve! Fantastic approach on how you explain the world of drumming , in it's entirety.
Fav punk song, I'm split on suburban home by The Descendents or Seeing Double at the Triple Rock by NOFX
freakin' out by Death is probably my favorite Punk song ever. everyone needs to check out Death
Death is thrash not punk
franky danko He's talking about A Band Named Death, man.
Yes the original death band was punk
Death was metal
The metal band Death is killer too though
"Bloodstains" by Agent Orange
Caden Pardo you cant make things worse for me!!! sometimes id rather dieee
I knew I had it the first time when my body felt weightless playing at that speed. The music starts to sound much better when you're no longer straining
Awesome videos. Been playing ten months and just been invited to play my third band doing Punk covers. Thank's for all the great tips dude.
For some reason the intro sounded like 80’s lars ulrich
Bro I just died when I read that!😂
Favorite punk rock song is definitely Basket Case by Green Day
Laclan Copeer :/
Great song
Gross
Yes, its good song for beginners but how about Recklesd Abandoned by Travis 🌚 its absolutely amazing parts😍
Rise Against - Survive is definitely my favorite, it just blows my mind
when it comes to drumming i think my favorite songs to play are: bad religion - who we are, the flatliners - here comes the treble
Platfus (I Hate You) - Green Day
New direction-Gorilla biscuits
I against I-Bad Brains
Good Good Things-Descendants
Descendants silly girl was my jam in my high school years. Brings back memories
Now thats a exquisite cymbalsetup for Punkrock, that Kerope does a great job for it
thanks for taking the time to break this down. it's important to show how being loose allows one to keep speed up.
I use 2 songs as a quick test during practices to play along to in order to gauge whether or not I'm properly warmed up.
NOFX - Punk Rock Elite
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Blowin' in the Wind
They're both short enough to check my speed and not too long to endure for a warm up.
Queen - Stone Cold Crazy
my favorite song is im not a looser descendants
It's not your favorite bc you cant spell it right... It's descendents
I love videos like this - videos that go deeper than "here's how you play this groove," and go down to "here's the technique that will help you play ALL OF THESE GROOVES." Great vid, Stephen! Thanks!
+imkopaka Yea, technique vids aren't popular here on YT but they're where the magic happens. Glad it helped!
Thank you! Steve, this is an invaluable tool for any drummer into punk rock, metal and hardcore. I’ve been in hardcore and punk bands most of my drumming days. For some reason no other style does it for me. I still love the music and the energy. Check out Slapshot from Boston. Also: Slayer, Negative Approach, Obituary, Minor Threat, CroMags, Agnostic Front, Sick of it All and Fear are my favorites too.
My favourite punk song is Reservoir by PUP
Johnson Lorenzo hell yeah dude
May 16 by lagwagon
Yes
Thanks for this, I've been playing 14yrs now and was doing this unconsciously, but having recognised it I'm going to try focus on it and get it even more relaxed because occasionally at a gig I've had it where my arm goes stiff and it's a feat to get through the rest of the song like that!
I know the feeling. This should fix that for ya
Just picked the drums back up I have been practicing my Latin and hip hop beats. Going to try this tmrw.
Anti manifesto by Propghandi is one of my all time favorites
Bro, LOVE that song
Bruh why your v so deep?? Lol
ikr
to show upper chest bruh
V for ventilation
*matt halpern has entered the group chat*
This is the video i was looking for! 👍🏽
Great lesson! Wish I had learned this stuff before having tendinitis/carpal tunnel issues. Now more than ever, I really have to watch my technique, stretch, and just listen to my arm when it tells me it's done for the day (which I should've been doing all along).
can you talk about ear care for drummers?
I'll see what I can do. Really important subject
To answer your question, Stephen, I've always been a fan of English '70s punk so I really like "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols.
+Harrison Myers First wave of punk. Can't beat it. It really set the groundwork for many of the changes we've seen in rock over the past 35 years. Holidays in the Sun is a fav of mine off that album.
+Stephen Taylor the original punk movement also inspired to a looser extent a lot of NWOBHM bands like Saxon and Motörhead. The only difference is that NWOBHM bands got rid of the "naff-naff bits" such as "having quiffed-back hair and looking like a pirate", as Biff Byford of Saxon put it.
+Stephen Taylor Dude, wicked chops, also i love the Halpern epic V tee ;)
awesome lesson stephen! enjoyed learning about the moeller technique
I forever love you for making this!!!
Wait.... Christian punk?
Update: I was considering to delete this comment, because I no longer feel like I need to share my surprise about the existence of the genre. Yes, I was surprised, but whatever, I do not want to implicitly express any sort of contempt towards people playing this type of music, if anything I am sure the people playing do it with great passion and enthusiasm, and I am not saying that to kiss ass (and I am aware that it very much sounds like the opposite of that).
Anyway, I noted a lot of positive reactions to the comment, and I want that to stay, so instead of deleting I want to add to my comment that the coolest thing on the planet is being respectful towards EVERYONE. And playing the drums is fun!
Yeah, screamin bout how jesus got fked up on all that wine...
Watch and Wash your mouth young man!
Lol, keep your religious bullshit to yourself
Hey guys...lets keep it friendly. Love for everyone to express their opinions but we can do that in a way that is respectful to all involved in the conversation. Drum on!
Paweł Morrison I don't believe in religion, but I do believe in GOD. (There is no reason to curse) Peace!
"The Eco-Terrorist in Me" by Rise Against
WOW! This song is great!!!! Thank you so much
41 and been playing punk for years, had to figure this stuff out on my own, you young kids these days are lucky.
Да..тапереча не тот, что давеча☝️
I play in a thrash metal band and I love to incorporate drums from other genres into heavier music so learning that classic bass snare, bass bass snare groove is very refreshing
"Pretense" Knuckle Puck
Pyromaniac 619 HOW DARE YOU GUILT ME
Pyromaniac 619 YES
Ryley Redman consider this a repercussion of the actions you were never properly punished for
most of the old green day stuff, but if I really really had to narrow it down to one song it would be burnout on the dookie album
such an amazing song but I lock up a lot on it
+jay kelly just keep practicing single and double strokes
Solid lesson!
baptists - bushcraft
nicest punk beats out damn near.
I enjoy your channel man. Subbed. I used to play. But I play guitar and sing now. Been wanting to get my drumming back up to par.
Favorite punk rock song? NOFX - The Decline ! :)
hcpunk91 love NoFx
Nofx - Green Corn
ZappaPowered yes!!
Right now it's probably The Ramone's Wart Hog. Of all time, possibly M+M's or Aliens Exist by blink-182 with a special nod to Josie by blink as well.
+Joey Hernandez I still love me some Blink. Josie is such a great tune
+Stephen Taylor Some say she doesn't get all jealous when I hang out with the guys. Haha. But thank you for the video, I was actually thinking about this a few days ago. Trying to learn faster beats in a much less stressing manner. So thank you for this. :D
Love the way you explain things! Very easy to follow. Thanks Stephen!
Glad it was clear for you Dominick!
Stephen Taylor yeah man! You're the best!
Misfits Helena and scream
Dead Kennedys holiday in cambodia :)
Cheers, Steve. This has helped me a lot as I don't play fast tempo a lot but it does happen in a few songs we play and I always end up locking up.
So glad it helped!
Great lesson. Thanks man!!
Definitely Ben Wah Balls by Blink -182
Any mcr or green day folks?
New old guy to drumming and punk is the favorite to try to play... Thanks for the lesson... And also thank you for that incredibly deep V t-shirt.... Favorite song is Hope by the descendants
My punk favourites have to be either Six Pack by Black Flag or Surf Combat by Naked Raygun
Rise Against!
Punk186 Brandon is a TIGHT punk drummer.
Anthem part 2- blink 182
Tim McIlrath not punk
CalvinDeeDrums boi
Hi Stephen great video!
I'm 4 years late to this, but:
The Flatliners - Dead Language
A Wilhelm Scream - Party Crasher
PEARS - (Self-Titled) (or honestly any of their releases)
These punk records are top notch!
Pears is so fucking gooddd
Bang Bang by Green Day! Or Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard! Or basically anything by Blink-182!
Burnout by Green day
Good song
Evan Tate Great song for classic punk drumming
Lamborghini Diablo SV Sex Pistols are garbage. The Clash is the best
Leo Mendez Clash is good but Sex Pistols is not garbage. green day is garbage
Green day is not garbage. How dare u hate on a band that made so many great songs with power cords. I grew up on green day watching TRE cool. I had green day posters all over my room. Not the hardest music to play but the songs are some of the most catchy and I'm my opinion some of the best punk. But when it comes to one of the best punk drummers u can't leave out Travis barker
hi stephen, great lesson again,i started playing in the punk era."teenage kicks" the undertones is the ultimate punk anthem.
I can't believe I only found this video now... man, thank you!
NOFX, Lori Meyers
nofx- don't call me white
first off, favorite punk song is watershed with foo fighters (Dave Grohl).
these techniques are so important, you just can't emphasize it enough. When I finally got my technical side to a quite above average level, so many things fell into place. The chops, my overall strokes, and my stamina!
Now this video was very basic for me, and this is things I've known for a long time, but its crucial for anyone who's playing, and it doesn't hurt to be reminded or just re-informed.
Thanks for your videos Stephen. I'm a senior year at a music-ed and this summer after my graduation this will be my goto inspiration place, as I'll nolonger have drumlessons in school. I'm applying the best music schools in Sweden (that's where I live), small country but if Abba could I can! right? only I can stop myself. Thanks for the inspiration once again, bless you man!
+Johan Söderlund Best of luck to you with the studies! Proud of you for making the commitment and putting in the work.
3 of my newer all time favorites: Turbonegro - Boys From Nowhere, Radical Operations - Beer Me, Pissing Match - Piss Test
Everything sux - the descendent
say. Good bye green day
I really love the drum track in The Clash's "Julie's Been Working For The Drug Squad". Topper Headon is soliiid.
+Christian Barrell In my book, he's the most underrated drummer in rock. His drumming on their albums was absolutely ground breaking in my book. And it shows...the band started to achieve success when he joined and saw their decline when he left. He was one of the key components to their success. Such a phenomenal talent.
Favorite punk song: right brigade-bad brains
