  • Milling my own wheat is WAY better than store bought, but why? I mill my own wheat because it is healthier, provides what our body needs, and prevents a lot of diseases that have become common today. It's a simple answer with a lot of complex details. I have whole wheat bread recipes in a playlist link you will find below. There are links to some medical studies and products further down in this description.
    Milling your own wheat gives you the most complete nutritional value from your bread. Bread can be a source of vitamins, minerals, Omega3, fiber, and protein. Bread made from commercially processed flour is devoid of most of that making it a carbohydrate heavy thing your body has to work harder to process.
    In developed countries, a major source of iron for the diet might come from enriched flour. In the United States, flour enrichment was invented in the 1930s as commercially processed white flour's popularity grew. A review of white flour was conducted because of health concerns over the increase in instances of illnesses including Pellagra and Beriberi. Mineral and vitamin deficits are the root causes of Pellagra and Beriberi, respectively. The prevalence of Beriberi and Pellagra were cured by adding back in just enough B vitamins and iron to processed white flour.
    Information on Pellagra
    Pellagra is a disease caused by a lack of the vitamin niacin (vitamin B3). Symptoms include inflamed skin, diarrhea, dementia, and sores in the mouth. Areas of the skin exposed to either sunlight or friction are typically affected first. Over time affected skin may become darker, stiffen, peel, or bleed.
    See more on Pellagra at en.wikipedia.o...
    Information on Beriberi
    A severe and chronic form of thiamine deficiency is known as Beriberi. Thiamine deficiency is a medical condition of low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1). The two main types in adults are wet Beriberi and dry Beriberi. Wet Beriberi affects the cardiovascular system, resulting in a fast heart rate, shortness of breath, and leg swelling. Dry Beriberi affects the nervous system, resulting in numbness of the hands and feet, confusion, trouble moving the legs, and pain.

    My wife has been milling our own wheat berries for several months now. We haven’t used store bought flour or bread of any kind since then. She’s a type 1 diabetic and I’m type 2. We have found that our blood glucose has stayed in far better control, our gut health is better than it’s ever been, and the bread products just plain taste better.

    Even though I have studied about nutrition for a number of years I just recently found this information out. I knew that whole wheat flour purchased from the store wasn’t as nutritious as milling your own I didn’t know to what degree. After watching Sue Beckers videos I decided I’m going to start milling my own flour. Her stories about heath transformations is very inspiring. Thank you for your videos too.

    So I was under the impression that I have a gluten intolerance and haven’t been able to eat products containing wheat flour in EIGHT YEARS. I just found out that I don’t have adverse reactions to fresh milled flour at all. So I’m all in, bought a wondermill and now I can eat eat w my family when flour is involved…at home at least.

    Thank you for such a concise but will rounded explanation of why you should mill your own flour and make bread at home. I went down the rabbit whole of this with Sue Beckers UA-cam seminars and I learned a ton. But when people ask me why or for a reference with the info I would pass on to them I hadn't yet found a video as comprehensive as her seminar... But honestly it's too long and I don't think most would watch it all the way through. So now I can send them your video! ♥️ Most people can keep attention for less than 5 minutes and they'll get the whole explanation in a short video straight to the point. So THANK YOU for making this.

    • @TheWholesomeHome
      @TheWholesomeHome  Рік тому

      Our body (specifically brain) needs carbs. Carbs are necessary, but in limited amounts. Good bread, specifically from freshly milled wheat, gives us a lot of the daily intake for vitamins/minerals/omegas.
      The store bought flour, they have to make it shelf stable to sell and last a long time. While it makes great fluffy cakes and cookies, it is just straight carbs. So, eating that bread makes your carbs higher because it doesn’t have the same nutritional value.
      Think of it like this, back in the day, everyone had freshly milled wheat to make bread. They ground the grains, then mixed in oil, a sweet of some kind, and most likely used a sourdough starter. (Or they took out the sourdough to make a flatter bread.) In this time, there was less diseases and people were much healthier, lived longer, and more.

    • @TheWholesomeHome
      @TheWholesomeHome  Рік тому

      Yes, the food pyramid was a lot more correct when the flour had all the nutrients it was supposed to have .

      Link: www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/gout-diet/art-20048524
      Having the complete Wheat berry, meaning freshly milled, gives you the whole grain nutrients. Whole grain on refined store bought may have some wheat bran put back in, but it may not be from those wheat berries. It can be bran from another source or left over from another milling period. Therefore the nutritional benefit is possibly lost due to the oxidation.
      Plus, the benefits of freshly milled outweigh the moderate purine level.
      Hope this helps!

    I buy King Arthur whole wheat flour. The ingediants say "100% whole wheat". It has a "best by" date of about a year. You say whole wheat flour goes rancid in days. I must be missing something here. Not making sense. Help me understand this.

    • @TheWholesomeHome
      @TheWholesomeHome  Рік тому

      The flour you buy is 100% whole wheat, but it is not 100% of what wheat contains. When the flour is processed to make it shelf stable, the majority of the healthy fiber, vitamins, minerals, and oils are removed. Milling wheat berries right before use gives you all the nutrients you can get from wheat and provides much of what your body needs.
      To help it make sense, I'll give an example that is a bit ridiculous, but i feel it makes the point. If I gave you a pile of orange peels, it would for sure be 100% real orange I gave you, but you'd be missing the best part.

    • @Blair62
      @Blair62 Рік тому

      Thanks for the response. That sounds like awfully deceptive advertising. If that's true then they are removing part of the whole wheat berry. So any part of the wheat berry could be called "whole wheat". For example gluten could be called "whole wheat' or unfortified white flour could be called "whole wheat".@@TheWholesomeHome
