    So would this be able to be used in place of “all purpose flour” in recipes? What about “bread flour”?

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  11 місяців тому +19

      This is an excellent question. I might put together a video about this. Yes freshly milled flour can be used in place of all purpose flour. However, the weight is different. Store bought AP has been packed down in its packaging and is very dense. Freshly milled flour is light and fluffy. You need a kitchen scale to weigh your flour versus simply scooping out cups. I know that sounds annoying but this small adjustment is so worth the health benefits!
      Bread flour is called that because it is a type of flour better suited to making bread products. In the freshly milled world that is called “hard wheat”. There are tons of different types of wheat berries out there and they all bring different qualities to the table. Hard red and hard white will have the highest protein content and that makes these best suited for bread. Soft white is lower in protein and better for cookies, pastries, etc.

    I just discovered this recently and I am on board. I’m trying to educate my friends and family. We eventually pay for “conveniences” one way or another. There is very little flour in shelf bread. It’s mostly stabilizers, preservatives and fillers. Those wreak havoc on the gut. That’s why people have gut problems.

    Love it! At the agave of 26, my daughters health deteriorated to the point of not being able to walk. One of the changes we made is milling our own flour. Game changer. I’m not saying that that alone healed her but it’s allowed her to eat bread products again. After almost 2years of diet and lifestyle changes, my girl is back to about 80%. Working, serving others, exercising, and living. Our processed food was literally killing her.
    The other benefit is taste! I cannot eat store bought bread anymore. No flavor at all. My family is spoiled rotten! Love your channel, keep it up. And prayers for you getting pregnant!!

    I DID IT!!!
    Nutrimill has started their Black Friday sales already and the classic grain mill is $100 off right now at $179! (I got the classic because in comparison the Harvest is not capable of grinding corn it says- so no corn meal if that matters to anyone) the harvest grain mill I believe is $80 off right now. But the savings from buying the classic paid for most of my 2 buckets of wheat berries I bought too! I’m very excited to learn how to cook with this- and get those 20+ stolen nutrients BACK into my bread and flour!!

I thought I had a good deal and you got yours for $179! Good for you! I was told I had celiac by my doctor and never had any symptoms. I have an autoimmune disease and have been convinced for years that our food was contaminated. Feel great one day and bad the next. My first loaf wasn’t bad. When I saw your thumbnail that said "I get upset about this" I clicked SO fast haha! I am also upset about how modern flour is processed, especially after I just learned that most flour in the U.S. is bleached with benzoyl peroxide and goes through another chemical process called bromation...something that has been banned in other countries. My family farms wheat and I knew that it couldn't be the wheat itself that is the enemy because it has many nutrients.

    Totally agree! We switched to fresh mill flour and noticed a great difference in our health! 20 years ago it was hard to find a mill, grains, now, abundance. The stores will be next to carry grains. For now, so many options for the northern states and different sources for the southern states, online. As a lifelong bread baker, took me 5 tries in a learning curve to figure out to use more moisture, less flour, and now great bread products! I remember ordering organic foods out of state 30 years ago, then slowly you saw the products in stores, and now, whole stores dedicated to Whole Foods. The food industry will follow demands. Thank you!

    The discovery of malnutrition was by Army doctors observation of the new recruits for WWII, they saw 30% were. Yet when questioned the recruits seemed to consume sufficient quantities of food. Hence the law requiring refortification requirements for all grains was established. Sourdough is even better for your body.
    I got the mill attachment for the mixer you have. Works great! During the pandemic mills were impossible to get. I got a coffee mill and only ground wheat thru it, worked great too.

I read somewhere that electric grinders affect the flour quality. Hopefully, that's not the case, because I don't want you to have to roll up more coins just to get a new hand grinder. I’m sorry about your diagnosis. I’m not well versed on flour alternatives but whatever you use, the fresher the better I think will be standard from a nutritional standpoint. Once milled, I imagine the degradation begins and works faster versus its non-milled state. Always mill what’s needed and no more.

You’ve convinced me, and I’ll be looking for a grain mill today. I have an older one that is hand-cranked but it’s become too difficult for me to do for very long. Actually, you remind me of me when I was younger and I look forward to not only your new videos but I’ll be looking back at some older ones. Keep up the good work!

I mess up a lot but my kids still love it haha. Oh and it was Sue Beckers Bread of Life video that did it for me. It is true for every country - if you are in a situation where you can, you should grow as much of your food as you can yourself and process as much of the food you need also yourself. Getting out with plants has so many benefits, which is way beyond just having fresh produce, its antidepressants, its cultivating understanding of how nature works, its a sense of security because in time you know what you are doing and how to approach problems, and of course its way more healthier to eat own food and its incomparably tastier.

    I love your passion. However I'd like to make a point if order. Yes, Industrial Seed Oils like the large modern flour mills, remove the benefits of seed/nut oils and add harmful synthetic preservatives to increase shelf life. But there is a new emergence of small batch seed & nut oils that retain the benefits without the harmful additives. Of course, like freshly milled whole wheat berries, it's not shelf stable for an extended period of time.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  10 місяців тому

      True and depending on which type it can’t be heated either. Which is what most people do with seed oils, heat them.

    Fun fact: The reason why flour started getting stripped of nutrients and tasting worse was from trains becoming standard across the continental US. This allowed for mass production. The more nutrients are pulled out of flour the longer the shelf life. Traditional flour lasted a month before the flavor started to lesson, but this new white flour (what we have in stores today) could last for years without degrading in flavor. During this time cheese production started to be mass produced too which is why mass produced American cheese tastes worse than European cheese, the same as how European flour tastes better than American flour and is healthier, due to Europe's geography being better suited for small batch production.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  10 місяців тому

      No unfortunately not. They are marketed that way but you can’t purchase true freshly milled flour from the store. If they are selling full intact flour without the bran and germ sifted away, it has long since oxidized and gone rancid. True, full, intact freshly milled flour starts to oxidize as soon as you mill it. Their is no store bought version that comes close, from a nutritional standpoint, to flour milled fresh at home and used right away.
