This is not the original ending. The grenade did not originally land on the runway. In the original video the grenade was caught by a George W Bush impersonator which he then uses to light his cigar while smirking. this was the first time that Madonna ever backed down from critics. there were threats to her life and family so she decided to do the censored version instead.

I think the rap is an integral part of this song! It depicts the superficial aspects of American life! Materialistic priorities that pinpoint the first world privilege; while people are getting blown up; others are focused on mondaine things! This came out during the war in Iraq!

  • @AiwaLover
    @AiwaLover Рік тому +32

The first and last revolutionary and gore female dialectical-materialist music video of pop. American Life is another substantial masterpiece of art in an industry and music genre that is naturally difficult to criticize moral, military, and economic standards more than religious, sexual, and ethnic ones, and so it was and has come back to be called "generic." " and "superficial". Madonna did the opposite with her audiovisual career (since Like a Virgin), in a more difficult time to do so, and without commercial pretensions, but essentially transparent. Today it is not only less difficult, it has even become a profitable "business" for some artists to raise flags. Katy Perry tried this in 2018 with Witness and even in such a subtle, clean and cute way, she was summarily hounded and slaughtered by fans, ex-fans and non-fans alike. So imagine Madonna, doing this since 1984. Madonna never needed to call herself "feminist" or "empowering women and blacks". But the HUMANIST essence was in her and she did so much more for people of color, women and LGBTI people than Beyoncé or Freddie Mercury. She and Michael Jackson are indeed the queen and king of pop.

I hadn't seen this video in a really long time (since it first came out actually). Watching it now, the rap verse actually makes a lot more sense to me. By this point in the video, she is sick and fed up with the ridiculousness of all the people that "have it all" and are watching this unsettling show for their amusement. Her rap verse is mocking them and their lifestyle, and she is pointing out that there is more to this life than having all of these "things". I think the rap is SUPPOSED to sound ridiculous. And the serious parts of the vers are when she's asking "DO YOU THINK I'M SATISFIED?!"

This music video practically ended Madonna's career in the United States. She was accused of being a traitor and an anti-American, so she was banned from American radios (which belongs to conservatives) from the time it was released until today, and she never really recovered from it. Madonna's drastic fall in the charts of her country affected her so much that she herself began to manage her career in a different way (focusing more in Tours instead of albums/singles/videos), as you will see in her next releases.

At the end of the song, it showed a George W. Bush look-alike lovingly resting his head on the shoulder of a Saddam Hussein look-alike, as though the pair were waiting for a marriage license. Madonna throw the grenade towards George Bush and he catches it and lights his cigar but that's cut from this video and here is one that show the real ending.. They also cut off Sadam in it

    About the rap:
    It's ironic humor.
It fascinates me that people love a song like LilWaynes Lollipop, but they don't find the humor that a silly song like that went to number 1. Madonna is making fun of stuff like that by talking a out soy lattes. You're meant to laugh at the rap section not hold it to the level of TuPac. That's the point. IE that People only care a out superficially and don't actually listen to lyrics. Mindless sheep.
    About the audience:
If you look closely she has a bunch of celebrity look-alikes like Jack Nicholson, the Clinton girls and Sophia Loren. Even Meryl Streep.
    Further references:
    Patty Hearst
    Companion viewing:
Watch Jewel's "Intuition" video to understand the spirit of this song. She made a similar statement in that video and song and a lot of people also missed the joke.
    My reference:
For example I'm working on a series called #TheSimpPillShow where I use ironic humor to make a point about post-feminism. A lot of people miss the joke too and think it's literal.
    My comments:
We need to teach visual literacy. I studied Semiotics and it's scary how many people don't know how to read symbology considering we are bombarded with billions of images every year. It's vital to learn how to read them or else one may be manipulated into nosing things they don't understand...like signing up to end people under the name of God & country.

can anyone show me the recent pop star with such a commentary in a video clip? I always show this video to anyone who are into making music and happens to be Ariana Grande's fans. Artists nowadays really wants to sugarcode everything, but art should comment on every aspect of life. Madonna was great at commenting on literally everything. Life, death, laughter, sorrow, parties, religion, politics - you name it and there should be Madonna's song commenting on that topic.

Why you don't understand the use of "rap" in this song? "American Life" is the name of the album and the song, does the word "american" say something to you? It is irony, tongue-in-cheek! Do you need an explicit explanation? I thought you were smarter! I mean it's Ok if you don't like the music, it's your personal opinion but saying that "seeing Madonna's rap is like seeing your mom doing it" it's completely disrespectful, it shows your lack of understanding though... Btw she can do whatever she wants, she's Madonna, she's earned it.
Pd; I was thinking about becoming a patreon subscriber, but I changed my mind, your lack of respect towards her is outrageous.

This was the song and video that made radio stations boycott her music, to this day. This was released after 9/11 and we were getting ready to go to war. This was her way of showing that war, escpecially this one was a mistake and she was right. It's a shame though that because of this pop music changed. Now 30 is considered over the hill. When I was in junior high and high school we had Cher and Tina Turner who were well into their 40's and competing very well I might add. Sure Madonna had a few hits after this, but think about it; hung up went to number 1 in 41 countries but only landed and 7 here. Radio pulled back and it worked. Same thing with 4 minutes, the best selling single of that year and reached number 3; This is an injustice because no one should be censored for their art. You don't have to agree with her, but she has the right to be creative and manifest. For that, Madonna, I am thankvul that I was alive the same time you are. You got balls bigger than any guy I know. Keep pushing the envelope. LEGEND!!

OMG, the rap is just the boom in music! It is a very strong criticism, that in the period after the September 11th attacks, the songs that were on the rise were raps talking about ostentation, money... and this is precisely the climax of the song, where she questions whether greatness is all that people need to feel satisfied and even criticizes what was playing on the radio to mask what actually happened. Imagine a country that was the target of terrorist attacks and people only talk about wealth, status, sex... she criticized in the same tone questioning all of this... and she was very smart, and the video even more so! Madonna was the only one who criticized that way and few singers talked about love and union, out of that context we have "Where Is The Love" by The Black Eyed Peas.

You need to re listen to American life.
It does continue sonically with the same sound as part of Music but it’s so much more personal and deeper and at the time it was a huge rebellion of the American president, war and the American dream.
Looks like your getting the vibe a lot more here x

I remember long time ago, watching some fashion show, Valentino himself talking about his latest collection, inspired by war ( i think it was the american attack on Irak) and he says he wanted it to look like a "chic army" and i didnt know how to feel really, cause i thought War is not really a theme to get into a fashion show, i remember i used to admire Valentino, but that one thing made me re think how the media shows the horrible things that happen to real people in territory being attaked, like it is just another show for us to watch, a complete disrespect and an insult to all those people sufering. Your reaction reminded me of that Valentino thing and i think youre right in the message you got from the video.

Madonna was really courageous at the time and a visionary. To the People of Iraq, the American army was “Hell on Wheels”. Unfortunately, everyone was too paranoid to realize that. She was blacklisted after this video and the “American Life” album (one of her finest in my opinion) was a flop. Fortunately, contemporary critics believe American Life to be one of Madonna’s best albums.

You don’t get it bro, this came out during the invasion of Iraq and this version of the video is not even the banned version. In the version that u can’t get anymore the bomb at the end end up in the hands of a Bush lookalike who seems oblivious he has something about to explode in his hands. That version is gone from the internet forever! She got banned from radio stations and never really recovered in the US. radio market. This was a legit protest to the war and her rap bit was supposed to be awkward and a criticism of American life that was at the time obviously aware of the war overseas.
