Uploaded my UNBOXING Video for the RSD (Record Store Day) Vinyl Release of the "American Life" Mixshow-Mix, EP! Which, in all honesty... As a Madonna fan, AND!! Someone who's living with Brain Cancer (The Vinyl Release actually has a portion of the $$$ Proceeds, going to Brain Cancer RESEARCH!) I really cannot say enough, just how happy I am to have this BEAUTIFUL Record, in my collection! 😍&!! To have bought it, knowing that it GOES to benefit Brain Cancer! Which, also... Has absolutely changed (& in MANY ways... 😅) Destroyed my Life... I cannot say enough how BIG of a Madonna Fan, I have become, over the last YEAR!! Of doing these, WEEKLY Reactions! &!! She is a genius
This is the uncut, uncensored music video she made of American Life with the release of the album in March 2003 about the time of the start of Bush’s Iraq War. She withheld the mv until recently on the 20-year anniversary of American Life. She instead released a “tamer” version of the mv in 2003 where most of the gore and mayhem of war was edited out. Despite this restraint, the mv elicited controversy and there were reports she received death threats including to her 2 young kids. The anti-war sentiment and criticism of the shallow materialism and spiritual emptiness of the American Dream, of fame and stardom that Madonna expressed in American Life is as relevant today as it was then. Appreciate you covering this video.

Hi my dear. I love Modern Madonna and old school Madonna all the same! This is such a great video, I am glad she finally released it! This was 20 years ago during a very stressful and political time. This really was really controversial and really got her a ton of heat! But this is why I love Madonna. She is an ARTIST first and foremost. She pushes boundaries and talks about things other pop stars wouldn't dare dream of. She is controversial and shocking, but it's because she has something to say. It's for the ART. American Life as an album is a masterpiece in my opinion and defintitely in my Top 5 albums of hers. Lover her always! Love you too Madam, hope all is well my friend. Really enjoyed watching your reaction to this video, but you don't have to worry when you get back to American Life later because this is one of three different versions of the video. Your friend can tell you about the other two, one was the censored one she put out after she withdrew the video and the other one was the alternate ending version of the video with this one being the director's cut. So you're good to go! Yes, this is a really powerful social commentary on war in the midst of our life in America and all that we have she did a great job of being both shocking and also making a very powerful statement. Happy anniversary to this wonderful and amazing album and I'm looking forward to watching your unboxing!

Madonna pulled the music video for "American Life" shortly before its scheduled release in 2003 due to controversial imagery and lyrics deemed inappropriate in the wake of the Iraq War. The video featured Madonna dressed in military garb and, in one edit throwing a hand grenade at then-President George W Bush.
Do you think she gets hate today? Lol, it's nothing compared to the backlash from the SEX book and Erotica. You could not pick up a newspaper or a magazine and not read something incredibly scathing about her. Or the aforementioned American Life video when radio stations stopped playing her, and she never got picked up again. Her children and friends were threatened, she feared for her safety. Magazines would run articles on protecting your children from her. Also, the wildly popular I Hate Madonna Handbook, TV specials exposing her dark past in NYC and much more that was very Anti-Madonna. Through it all, she maintained her Ef you attitude and Just Watch ME survive ideals. She is now inspiring a new generation that never realized how impshe was.
It's not entirely clear why Madonna decided to release the video now. Still, it's possible that she wanted to revisit the themes and messages of the album in light of current political and social issues. Additionally, with the rise of social media and online streaming services, video may have a wider audience than in 2003. Not to mention the attention is great for ticket sales and reminds us what made her so great back in the day. Time does wonders for perspective, which is just one reason she is a living legend.

Amazing video and very controversial. She ended up swapping the video to a much more toned down version because of the backlash and threats other artists were getting when voicing opposition to the war or G Bush at the time. I think she didn’t want to expose her family to potential violence. Great reaction MRB!

This was Madonna's post 9/11 album. Many felted she pushed too far again. The resulting backlash harmed sales of the album and all it's singles.
This song is not representive of the album as a whole. American Life is a very introspective and autobiographical album. It sees Madonna in full singer songwriter mode.
hi, do you know of this video there are various versions including my favorite which is the bush version. at the time madonna had filmed various alternate endings before having it retired altogether. maybe you can see a different version when you get there chronologically

This video is a political statement. Most americans do not realise the gravity of their government foreign policy. "Nothing it's what it seems". The fashion show displayed here it's just an example of how the big money works around the globe, not only in America. Behing all the glamour that embodies the show, you see several look alike celebrities in the audience, like Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Sophia Loren, etc... she criticizes imperialism, sexual exploitation, far right and left extremists, capitalism, greedy and senseless wars. Madonna is a great artist, she knows how to use her voice (platform) and to explore and expose herself as well. Nobody here is inocent, she knows that. Can we do something to change that? Well, they have been trying to shut her up for 40 years. It's so easy to forget that the vast majority of people around the world is poor.
I was in the 9th grade and terrified of the Iraq war. I still can't watch footage of 9/11. I was so mad when she didn't release it and instead chose the VERY tame version with the flags. But looking back...can you imagine if she did? It would be career suicide. I love when Madonna is REAL but Americans at the time weren't having it then We were all wanting revenge for the 9/11 attacks. Not only was the song a bit out there sonically, but the message blacklisted her almost immediately. You didn't even get the whole version where 'George W. Bush' takes the grenade and uses it to light a cigarette for 'Saddam Hussein'. She was so real for this.
