We missed Madonna Sunday because of this video! Usually, for our Madonna reactions, the video is what UA-cam blocks, but this time it was the actual song audio. This led to the video having to be constantly edited until finally, YT let us post it. I couldn't tell you why this song in particular was so heavily blocked, but we finally got it. If you want to watch the full uncut version of the reaction, we have it posted on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/TriFate

I would complain to you about the kkkk edit but I'll see the complete link. The video must have been censored by YT because it speaks truths about the illusion of the American dream. Many Americans were offended by these criticisms and Madonna was wronged because of that this was so bad for Madonna because since 2003 she has been boycotted and her singles do not play on American radio.

This is why Madonna is no mere pop star…she is a true artist of the highest degree and makes statements. You have to realize Madonna sacrificed her 20+ year career of major radio play to make a statement with this song. She had US hits after this song but never got the same love on radio ever again for her anti war stance (remember most radio stations are owned by conservatives). Similar to Janet Jackson after the super bowl

I agree with what you said. The song itself wasn't political. It was a critique of the modern American life and culture that glorifies fame, glamor and material fortune. It was the music video that was political and antiwar.

American Life was the necessary criticism.
The album came in a troubled moment in the US, shortly after 9/11.
Madonna dialogues with the present, makes social critics & already opens the album with a deconstruction of the American way of life (American Life).
It goes through the flashes that chase the celebrities, the exaggerations that mark Hollywood (Hollywood).
It enters on a more intimate wave (Nobody Knows Me), then Madonna talks about her past (Mother and Father) & on the disappointments of the life (Love Profusion).
Also yielded the theme song from the movie 007 - Die Another Day & one of the best clips ever (Die Another Day).

People didn’t like the song anyways whether or not there was a radio ban.

    • @WilUnleashed
      @WilUnleashed 3 роки тому +4

Wasn''t really a ban or blacklisting. She pulled the video before it aired and had a flag version replace it. However, some conservative political media like FOX decided to comment on the original video as if it was released. No one really saw this version until it was leaked and which later was used in the tour backdrops of her 2004 Tour. Radio didn't blacklist her. It was becoming a time that radio felt Madonna was too old for their audience (which I find extremely ridiculous). The song itself is far more lighter than the video. The song wasn't about anti-war or Anti-American. Unfortunately, people took the album out of context. I'm sure the cover/photos on the album didn't help and much of the press she did, she was quite political. That said; the song just didn't work for radio. A lot of people, even some fans, took issue with the song along with the self indulgent rap. While "Music" was her real last hit on American radio, she was struggling then in getting airplay, especially by the third single release of WIFLFAG. It didn't help she had a spat with the record company in what singles to release. The record company wanted "Amazing" as the fourth single, and Madonna wanted Impressive Instant. Madonna kinda got her way, as Impressive Instant got a promotional release, but she did everything to keep Warner from releasing "Amazing" as well as refusing to perform it on the Drowned World Tour as they were hoping to use LIVE footage for an official video.

@@alexgiron8148 I understand that, but my point was that people didn't like the album even when it got highly promoted. The VMA performance only increased sales of the album by a couple thousand. You can't claim she's the biggest female popstar in the world and then in the same breath say she's an underdog. That's not how it works. The singles all tanked and people just weren't feeling the acoustic electro-folk sound. Maybe a hit like Music or Don't Tell Me could have helped but tbh, none of the singles sounded like hits to me.

There’s the superficial aspect of simply enjoying the music and beats, and if you go deeper there’s the underlying point she is making.
She made this video right before the attack on Iraq, as a kind of warning and by the time it was ready to be released, the war had already started so she chose not to release this version of the video. She didn’t want people to think she was trying to disrespect the men and women who fought.

This video protested Bush's war against Iraq and those who in the U.S. who didn't care or who supported the war. Madonna was excoriated for this video and banned from radio play, something she is still experiencing. Madonna, George Michael, and the Dixie Chicks were just a paltry few who spoke against the war and/or the Bush regime at the time. The album "American Life" is a political album that also entertains social commentary. It's also an introspective album with some of the most lovely acoustic songs by Madonna, and one of my favorites.

This was a very controversial video for that time. Madonna always showed her true point of view to the point of being singled out. Excellent 🙌🏻

The director's cut uncensored doesn't have "President Bush" at the end catching the grenade. That was the version played on European Music channels (the Bush version) before the video get pulled by Madonna and FBI due to serious life threaths she and her famlily received. The video still played for about 3 weeks in Europe before being replaced by the flagged video on her UA-cam channel. The directors cut was featured on a special DVD series specialized on Directors. This video is from March/April 2003 (Her video with Britney was from November/December 2003).

really well done review! this video was indeed a reaction to the Iraq War and actually Madonna decided to not release the original version and made a censored edited version because of how Controversial it would have been at the time. Great job on looking at the intricacies of the symbolism of the video between our American life and their reality.

Madonna never really got the recognition for doing such a brave and incisive music video like this. Like really, I’ve never seen any artist THAT big going THAT far! I guess the USA government just wants very hard everyone to ignore her American Life era.

Since you seem to be discovering the studio version of songs and then watching a live version. You should defo check out The Re-Invention Tour performance, which is basically the video images but ramped up to 10! It opened the military section of the show.
You both talked about not yet seeing a live performance where she really let's loose and does full on Choreo. I would for you to check out Into the Groove, her first number 1 single. Watch Into the Groove on the 1987 Who's that Girl Tour, live in Italy, she is half Italian. The video DVD was not called Ciao Italia. The dancing, Choreo and vocals are all 10/10. You can tell from the stage that it is the 80's, her first world tour. The little kid from the Open your heart video is on this tour as one of her dancers. It's so great to see young guys appreciating her genius. You should both consider watching Madonna: Behind the American dream, a BBC documentary made in December 1990 that shows just how famous she really was, no one had been that famous before and her movie Truth or Dare that followed her backstage during the Blond Ambition tour, you will not believe what her life was like. ❤️ Anyway love you guys for listening to a range of music. Get your girlfriends involved. ❤️✖️

After the SEX/Erotica era of 1992/93, American Life video (censured) was her next major political statement which was critical of the then potential war in Iraq.
When war was declared, she pulled the video, but the damage to her career was done.
Most people now agree the war was unnecessary and illegal

You guys have to watch the original ending because the directors cut toned down the original ending. Skip to the last 30 seconds of this link: ua-cam.com/video/XZ7tZrQtHgo/v-deo.html
It is only 20-30 seconds of your time and you will absolutely love it.
(P.S. The lighting of the cigar symbolizes who is responsible for starting the war.)

I am so impressed with both of your reactions to this video. Very spot on. At the time though, you could not say what you said. Anyone that expressed those thoughts would have been considered a traitor, thankfully most Americans, especially the youth of today understand what really happened then. As a long time fan of Madonna, it did feel a bit disappointing that she chose for the first time in her career to back down to pressure. She always paved the way in terms of strength in conviction and telling the truth. But on the other hand she was also a mother, she couldn't be as defiant as she was in her youth, she knew the backlash could put her family in danger as it did when the Dixie Chicks spoke out around the same time against the war. I also think she realized it was better to play the long game, this music video wouldn't change the war, but her staying in the publics good graces, rebuilding her career and staying relevant gave her a pedestal to speak from, a position from which people could hear her speak the truth on tour and not be cancelled by conservatives or the right wing.
