I don't think Lelouch and Eren are really alike at all. They both want freedom I guess, but Eren seems to only want freedom for his race, while Lelouch is attempting to liberate the world. Most of his war crimes are also against oppressive regimes who pose existential threats to the continuation of human nature. Charles was going to eliminate the human subconsciouss and free will, Schneizel is eliminating free will too through the threat of Damocles.
Marley was genocidal and war mongering yes, but did not pose an existential threat to all of humanity the same way Charles or Schneizel was. Rather Eren is the one who posed the existential threat to all of humanity through the rumbling. Eren is more of an aggressor (at least during the rumbling), and Lelouch is fighting oppressors.

An antagonist is the right one for a given protagonist, if both compete for the same goal. In this case, the world is obviously the target. Both Charles and his sons, Schneizel and Lelouch, aim to end conflicts and bring peace. The Ragnarök Connection, Damocles and Zero Requiem are both the wishes that Charles, Schneizel and Lelouch respectively have for the world and the plans that were built from their perceptions of condition human. However, Charles and Schneizel pose as opponents for Lelouch because they see human nature as an obstacle to achieving that goal and decide to address it.
In fact, the final montage of the last opening involving Charles, Schneizel and Zero/Lelouch alludes to the ideological confrontation between them in the final arc, which is nothing other than their vision of the human race. Schneizel and Charles appear standing in the middle of a map painted in two colors because they both have a simplistic, petty, and Manichean vision of humanity. They believe for different reasons that humans are confrontational and consider themselves best suited to direct the people to live in the way that is best for them. Both the Ragnarök Connection and Damocles represent a transgression of free will and reflect Charles and Schneizel's deep contempt for human nature. Broadly speaking, the plans are essentially the same. The difference between them lies mainly in the nuances.
On Charles' side, the Ragnarök Connection is based on the emperor's philosophy that the world's suffering comes from people lying. In response, he wanted to eliminate the masks (the individual we show to others) by destroying the Collective Unconscious to force people to be themselves. The problem is that his plan involves altering the human condition and, by extension, eliminating individuality and free will, since lying is an inherent faculty of humanity and people are a sum of masks (there is no real self without a mask ).
On Schneizel's side, Damocles is based on the prince's philosophy that people want to be controlled. He believes that the suffering in the world stems from people being selfish and greedy and will always put their own interests above the common good. In response, Schneizel will force peace through fear by using the Damocles to threaten the world's governments and thus force them to cooperate in order to preserve their survival. Fear is the raw material of oppressive regimes since it is a form of control over the population and precisely Schneizel's world, like Kira's world, are dictatorships (even the official Death Note guide puts it in these terms literally). So instead of depriving people of their abilities and their choices, he coerces them to choose to do his will and punishes them if they choose to do otherwise. Even if Schneizel doesn't reject human nature like his father, he does intend to "use" it to his advantage to make peace a reality.
However, as Lelouch said, a peace imposed by force is an evil act, regardless of the intentions.

Very well put. It's also quite interesting how Lelouch is now using a brainwashed army like sacrificial pawns, essentially committing the very evil he swore to fight against as Zero.
The reason he earned the respect of the Black Knights despite not showing his face was because he was not willing to make suicide attacks. He convinced a bunch of desperate terrorists to become knights of justice. But now, the leaders of the Black Knights know Zero was secretly using Geass to impose his will on others, sometimes his own people, and he's now sacrificing brainwashed troops to a volcano and fleija warheads. It makes sense that they would vew him as the greater evil next to Schnizel. But I doubt they realize what Schnizel intends to do with the fleija once he's emperor.

Schneizel seemed like a complete opposite to everything Britannia stood for in season 1, a calm diplomat that promoted solutions that hurt the least people. That way of thinking kind of falls apart once you think through the fact that one of the most powerful people in the Britannian Empire surely wouldn't stay in that position if they weren't at least a bit ruthless. Season 2 slowly starts pulling Schneizel's mask and these final episodes just yank it off, revealing his true nature, making him nonchalantly talk about commiting one of the biggest atrocuties in the entire show. He is such an interesting final antagonist for Lelouch.

You know what? I also thought that Eren was very similar to Lelouch, but rewatching this episode with that in mind, its more like Lelouch's plan with Schneizel's ideology. Destroying the world's capitals with Fleya to use fear as a means to achieve peace? "Disciplining the entire human world by yourself" "I shall become a God". Yeah, that's far more Kira / Eren. Lelouch's plan cares much more about keeping humanity alive, not hurting civilians... Eren, Kira and Schneizel talk about peace but they don't care about destroying everything in their way. Lelouch is very careful in his steps.

Schneizel as an interesting character round 1 (I'll share my other thoughts next episode probably)
    15:20
I always thought the pop-out gun was a little absurd, but I do appreciate its thematic function: Schneizel, at every step of the way, refuses to be the one pulling the trigger. He gets everyone else to do it for him (currently, Nunally with Damocles) but never *technically* bloodies his own hands. Here, he takes it to a somewhat literal extreme, literally shooting Cornelia without having to hold the gun. It's to the point of being meaningless beyond an obsession on his part with *feeling* like he's on some level absolved of culpability. And it slots neatly as an inverse of one of the show's main themes:
"Those who kill must also be willing to be killed."
Schneizel, unwilling to consider himself one who kills (no matter how ridiculous that justification is), is most certainly not someone willing to be killed.

Schneizel has 2 completely separates plans. 1 is to fight Lelouch. Second is to take over the world using Fleias and Damocles.

Ichirou Okouchi (the head writer and one of the CG creators) stated that it was the staff's wish that the series conclude with a battle between normal people and the decision that Lelouch made as a human being and that is why Nunnally and Schneizel (instead of Charles and Marianne) were the final enemies. For my part, I find it appropriate that Lelouch and Schneizel face each other at the end. There are several similarities. They are both men who have royal lineage. They are very intelligent, formidable strategists, charismatic, eloquent, charming, manipulative, pragmatic and above all they have achieved everything with lies. The mask is one of the fundamental themes of this series, it is an integral aspect of Schneizel and Lelouch and constitutes an essential gear for their plans to succeed. This episode places special emphasis on this. The two brothers have come this far by pretending to be what they are not. Schneizel has presented himself as a disinterested diplomat who advocates peace and is actually an ambitious narcissistic prince who despises humans; while Lelouch has set himself up as a ruthless dictator thirsty for power, when he really is the benefactor of humanity, who fight for free will and will save the world. I'm still perplexed by the ironic twists in this series.
By the way, did you notice that at the end of this episode Lelouch makes Mount Fuji explode? This seems like a side effect of the battle. A great event that the creators decided to take place to increase the excitement and stakes since we are in the final stretch. Until you remember that Taizo Kirihara said in the first season that Mount Fuji had 70% of the world's supply of sakuradite, which is the mineral that serves as the Knightmares' energy source, so that Lelouch deprived the world of one of its main weapons of war by extinguishing the Knightmares of the next generations and, at the same time, eliminated the reason why the great powers wanted to conquer Japan (not to mention that most countries at ally with the FNU were demilitarized, so there are no armies to wage war). Then you realize that it's no coincidence, that Lelouch thought of EVERYTHING and that the creators did indeed write this story from front to back. There are no loose ends in the ending of Code Geass.
I'll end my second comment by leaving some fun facts:
    1. Goro Taniguchi said that Lelouch and Suzaku had been false friends all this time and that they became true friends during Zero Requiem. He defined friendship as when you trust your friend enough to trade your underwear for theirs. Thanks for the lessons on personal hygiene and how to strengthen friendship, Taniguchi.
    2. Damocles is supposedly shaped like a chess piece.
    Update:
    1. Lelouch will never take CC's code (he didn't take Charles's either).
    2. The Black Knights have no idea that Schneizel will use the F.L.E.I.J.A. against the world. Schneizel revealed his plans now. The Black Knights join him to stop Lelouch and that's it.
    3. The Black Knights hate Lelouch because he lied to them, abandoned them and used them for his own interests. In addition, his plans caused the death of many Japanese.

I agree, the that final battle is amazingly brilliant, it has broken most standards that were accepted in those times and that's why I put Code Geass as the best anime of all time. It's my opininon but summarising everything and what they did in the end, makes this a masterpiece that I've never found anywhere.

The final battle is amazing, but my favorite final battle is the one happening in the next episode. This whole sequence where every character is having ideological arguments with another character and we get little sentences from each one as they argue but it cuts between many characters in many side of the conflict explaining their beliefs and some times enemies agree, sometimes allies agree... it's just... it's beautiful. It helps that we've known these characters for almost 50 episodes and that they've been allies and enemies interchangeably through the show.
For me, Code Geass final battle is an ideological one. And at that point everything is decided. The "fight" ends this episode with Lelouch's victory, and next episode is a final argument that leads to Lelouch taking a decision (a very significant one thematically and in terms of how far his character is willing to go) and thus setting the course of history.
Code Geass has a wonderfully written finale. Truly one of the best if not the best ending of a story I've ever seen, and that's why I refuse to accept the existence of Resurrection and the upcoming sequel hahaha

Scheneizel gave Japan their independence, don't forget about it, he made a deal with the Black Knights, you get Japan if you give us Lelouch.
Japan was free, then Lelouch invaded Japan again and declared war on the world after taking all their representatives hostage.
So of course they hate Lelouch and are fighting him, Lelouch declared war on them.
Why wouldn't they join Schneizel? They have no idea Schneizel is crazy and plans on nuking 2 billion people, they only agreed to join him and use the FLEIJA on Lelouch, not knowing Schneizel plans to nuke the world.
They also knows Lelouch can mind control anyone he looks at, they can't allow him to take over the world.

Another fantastic episode in the tank. The finale of this series really is some peak fiction.
One thing I love about this arc is Suzaku finally joining Lelouch. I feel like we get an idea of how things would have worked if they had always been together. One of Lelouch's biggest weaknesses is that he lets his emotions get the better of him. He's always trying to have his cake and eat it, too. He has to protect Nunally. He has to save the Student Council. He has to take back Kallen. And this has often caused problems for him. Once again, we see Lelouch struggling with a revelation. His sister being alive has caused him distress and he is conflicted. And Suzaku comes to him and smacks some sense into him. Gets him back on task. Cuts away his weakness. I can't help but think Suzaku would have likely been able to keep Lelouch on track in those moments (and likely taken on the task of resolving them in Lelouch's favor as well) and probably prevented a lot of issues.
Suzaku has become notably ruthless, too. The way he talked to Lelouch after the meeting with Nunally. Calling himself "Lelouch's sword" and saying that he will cut away his enemies and his own weakness. Notice that Suzaku even says "Well, Lelouch" when the Black Knights are beating their forces. It was Suzaku that effectively called for the use of the volcano to crush the Black Knights.
Also, how crazy is it that two high school boys are fighting the entire world? And winning? This is what we've been denied the entire series!
I'll give Kenny some credit, too. He's been onto Schneizel since he was introduced. Schneizel has always been one to call for your assassination and then act shocked when you die. He's always been acting like the good, noble, charming prince, but notice he refers to the "use of the mask" in this episode. Considering he was probably the second most powerful person in Britannia for 90% of the series, he's certainly been the one calling for some heinous acts. Like when he had them fire on Suzaku and Zero in an effort to kill Zero. And yet also acted like he was certain they could save him. When he was standing next to the person you were trying to kill?
Note that Schneizel has never been the one to pull the trigger. Lelouch has certainly killed most of his victims through word, but he has killed many people personally. Notably Clovis and Euphy.
So, you asked if they are planning for each other's plans. And yes. Lelouch and Schneizel each have some idea of what the other is planning. And they are planning around those plans. And they are planning around the plans being planned around their plans. Sound a little crazy? Yep. They are a pair of masters. Probably the smartest people on the planet.
Montana suggesting that appearing weak in chess can be a strength oddly reminded me of the development of Big Blue. The chess playing computer designed to beat pros. An early prototype was sent to a Chess tournament. Now, they do rate players on capability. Well, someone had a problem with the computer competing and intentionally gave it a low rating. And some players later complained they lost because they underestimated the computer due to its lower rating.

It kinda makes the Black Knights look like hypocrites.
They detest Lelouch because they view him as a power-hungry tyrant who used them and the power of Geass for his own ambitions. Yet, they're perfectly fine siding with Schneizel, the man who was responsible for the destruction of Tokyo, and who seeks to control the world under threat of mutually assured destruction.
Without Lelouch in charge, the Black Knights are complete fools.

Do you think Schneizel told them his final plan? All the black nights know is that Lelouch is currently on the move to conquer the world and Schneizel seems to be more reasonable to negotiate with. Plus without Schneizel forces, they have no hope of defending japan from Lelouch's forces that are heading their way. They're banking on taking Lelouch out first since he's actually attacking and then handle the issue with Schneizel who may or may not be reasoned with from their perspective.

False. CC betrayed Lelouch until episode 21 of R2, that is, 90% of the series. She hid the truth from him, she was disloyal to him (she was working with his parents all the time), she abandoned him when he needed her most, she used him for her own interests, she almost forced him to have an immortal life that she suffered and the worst of all is that the series never address this. CC never faces the consequences of her bad actions nor does she feel regret for what she did to a person who always treated her well.
