I just wanted to add a little info about the Ezra Cask Strength, as I am a huge fan and have several bottles. There is also a sister product called Distiller's Collection (Which usually comes in at a slightly lower proof). The Cask Strength is a single barrel picked by a store and the Distiller's Collection is a single barrel picked by the distillery for a store. Both are generally around that 5-6 year old mark. Also, for comparison sake you'll want to pay attention to the barrel filled date on the small strip under the main label...Lux Row was an NDP prior to 2018, so any barrels filled before January 2018 used Heaven Hill and anything filled in 2018 or after was distilled by Lux Row using their mash bill...There are also differences in the barrel numbers (HH filled barrels use a 7 digit barrel number and LR filled barrels use a 4 digit number, but the fill date is probably the best indicator of who distilled it). 2023 is the first year Luxco has used their own distillate in these offerings, and at least earlier this year, barrel picks included samples of both to choose from.
This information also applies to Rebel Cask Strength and Rebel Distiller's Collection products, which is a wheated mash bill. For my palate, I much prefer the Heaven Hill rye based bourbon, but the wheated bourbon that Lux Row is producing...I think is one of the best wheated mash bills available, It's phenomenal and I can't wait to see how it develops over time with some more age on it.
I would be curious to know what the fill date is on the bottle you guys tried, to see which distillate you were sampling.

Navy Strength indicates that the alcohol content is at least 57%. At that strength it will not dilute gunpowder should it be spilled.

In the British Navy, gin and/or rum was stored on ships next to gunpowder. In combat, barrels would break and moisten the gunpowder, but the gunpowder would still explode if the ABV was sufficiently high.

I only recognize the Ezra Brooks Cask Strength. We currently have that in Pennsylvania. $49.99. And it is a Fine Wine and Good Spirits exclusive in Pennsylvania as well. Always enjoy your videos from here in Sweden. Often with a dram of some quality distillate in my glass.
Navy strength comes from the British Navy and the 18th century I believe. The barrels for the sailor's daily Gin or Rum rations were stored in the gunpowder room. And should one of the barrels spring a leak it needed to be strong enough (I believe somewhere around 55% ABV) that the gunpowder would still ignite should some of that good stuff seep into it.

I love my bottle of Ezra Brooks Cask Strength. I'd love to see a comparison between store picks for sure! I will definitely buy it again if I ever see it in PA. Here is a fun fact about the term Navy Strength. On the old ships, gin, rum, and gunpowder were stored in wooden barrels near each other. If the rum or gin barrels ever got a leak, their higher alcohol content- at least 57.15% (navy strength) would ensure that the gunpowder that may have gotten wet from these leaks would still burn. It's nice to know that it's not just some random number but had a practical purpose! Cheers Guys!

Navy strength refers to usually gin or rum at around 57.1 abv. That is because it was stored near the gun powder and if the barrels broke it, that level wouldn’t harm the powder and still allowed it to explode.

If I could make a suggestion, I would say try Horse Soldier if you can find it. It is readily available in North Carolina. (I don’t see any on the wall behind you, i assume you haven’t had it) Their cask strength is quite good IMO. I would send a bottle except its in the $90 range.
Our whiskey club also unanimously loved Mount Gay Black Barrel Cask Strength. It is rum finished in bourbon barrels, and it is fantastic. If you liked the gin, this would be worth a try. (Cask strength is unfortunately only available at the distillery in Barbados, but that’s a nice trip) We made smoky old fashioned cocktails and multiple people in the club said “this is the best cocktail I have ever had.” My bottle is almost empty now. Will have to go back to the island.

Google: “Navy strength” is a term that refers to a spirit that is bottled at exactly 57% alcohol by volume. The term was coined by the branding consultant John Murphy on behalf of Plymouth Gin in 1993 for something that used to be called 100º UK proof spirit. Nowadays, the term is usually associated with gin or rum, and brands like Woods 100 are 57% and share a common dark, rich characteristic that is reminiscent of the rums carried on board ship in the 19th century.

Just picked up a Chattanooga single barrel toasted rye 121 proof for 55 bucks the other day. It reminds me of a tootsie roll

I'd savor the single barrel Knickerbocker gin.
They don't even list the single barrel version on their website under available products.

I got a barrel pick from my bourbon group "big bourbon club" out of Louisville and they did a jack pick and that is delicious. Would like to send you a sample. I think you would enjoy it.
