    As being a Scotts rep and counselor, I have tried both the traditional broadcast spreader as well as our SNAP(broadcast) spreader with equal results. The SNAP is great for the small yard or the widow who just wants to "plug and play". The past two years I used nothing but the SNAP(it was free), so why not? The result was my usual, neighbors jealous and envious and mad that I wont give too many secrets away. By the way I am 46 and still can bench 250 lbs...man card completly intact!

    • @rickstercornish

      They are big nitrogen "pushers". However, I believe the thought is to crowd out weeds with a healthy lawn that grows like wildfire. As I am no longer a Scott's rep, I can be a little more selective. I hear Lesco products are wonderful...

    I had to comment about the wife cutting the lawn section. I taught my wife how to trim with the weed eater and she cuts the back yard. We have one push mower so the system is I start on the front while she picks up the dog poop in the back and trims. We finish around the same time. Then I use the weed eater with the edge attachment while she mows the back yard. When I finish edging I blow the sidewalks. It works really well because the yard is finished quicker and we end our task at the same time. Unfortunately, I have been stuck cutting the grass from June of last year because she was pregnant with my son who was born in August. I hope she resumes her chores this spring and summer.

    I definitely have learned a lot by watching your vids today for my yard. My yard is not as bad as the church yard but it needs work. Today while in rural king I noticed the bags of milorganite but didnt even know what it was but now I do thanks. I also like your method of applying week killer with the pump spray in areas.

      Because of my lot size yard I will stay with drop spreader even though I agree the brroadcast would lay the ingrediants more even. Im just afraid it might be a bit over done and will get fert in my neighbors yard by accident.

    Just finished watching your video. Lol time flew by quick. Thanks for the advice. I have been following your program on my front yard and have definitely noticed the difference. However this snow really messed up my grass and not to mention my wife drove all over the edges of the driveway onto the grass during the snow. So I have some bare spots that I will need to fix lol I was actually going to watch Netflix prior to starting this video. And I do agree it was better than Netflix lol thanks once again

    Question, I have Kentucky Blue Grass ive planted, I newly planted last fall, and this spring, I let it grow high before I 1st mowed it, when I did, it got scalped, its still green, but now a lot of stems are still exposed, How long will it take to get the blades back? Or what remedies do you advise?

  • @dvdfrnzwbr
    @dvdfrnzwbr 10 років тому

    It would be nice to see a video on how to get rid of the thick bladed Barn Grass/ Field Grass/ Course Fescue, that is mistaken for Crab Grass, found in old neglected lawns or newely started over replaced lawns. It usually sticks out like an island and it's the only grass in your lawn that is green during drought periods. It usually grows in patches and spreads. Fertilizer doesn't seem to get rid of it. I don't know if there is a treatment other than phyisical removal? Also there is the grass that shows up that is on the other side of the spectrum being too thin bladed and round in shape.
    While on the subject there is a time when it's not worth repairing a lawn and more advantagious to start over with a new lawn. That would make a good video also.

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  10 років тому

      Some very tough challenges there for sure. Foreign grasses are the toughest lawn problem due to the fact that anything you spray to kill them will oftentimes kill your good grass. There are selective herbicides that can kill only certain problem grasses but they vary widely also and are not always available to a non-licensed home owner.
      WIth that in mind, the best way to care for this situation is to dig the clumps out by hand. Dig deep down and around to get the entire clump. The immediately fill in with fresh soil and grass seed. It's a lot of work, but you can do a few clumps per week over time.

    With organic lawn feed and targeted weed control how many seasons did it take to get it looking at least 80% good but I guess that all depends on what your old lawn looked like before you sold it?

    Great show guys! I am a 53 yr old woman who has been taking care of my lawn for 30 years using Scotts. I am very disappointed with them for various reasons but in the fall I started your program Allyn. Now can you lay out a program for me starting with Spring all the way thru Fall using your organic/synthetic blend? I don't let my husband touch a mower unless it's the trim/bank and around trees. He gets on the mower and cuts with no pattern or finesse as I like to do. The neighborhood stops to walk on my grass because I keep my lawn in prestige shape but it's very hard cuz I have a half acre and no city water just well water and a 2 inch well at that???? Watering my lawn is a sometimes 2 day job because of the well? You had some great info and I enjoyed your show. I have a Toro like yours for doing my trim and ride an Airens 50 Zoom zero turn for the remainder of my lawn. The Toro was a Mother's Day gift 2 years ago from my son, God I love him for that! Sure wish I had a lot of money to afford a new well and underground sprinkling. My back is pretty worn out these days. Thanks again for all the advice and if you could program the season out for me I would appreciate it. Scotts isn't going to get rich off me anymore!

    Hi Allyn, I'm a huge fan. Can you advise on when or if I should apply limestone?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  9 років тому +1

      Christopher Conley Hi Chris - if you are talking about supplementing your soil with a lime application, you can do that in spring or fall - just depends on the problem you are trying to correct. Typically lime isn't needed unless there is a pH issue - did you do soil tests or something to confirm you have sour soil?

    Can I use Scotts Kentucky Blue Grass Seed alone, or should I be mixing another with it like Scotts Sun and Shade Mix for instance, for better results?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  10 років тому

      If you look at the label on the KY Bluegrass seed, I bet there are 3 or 4 types of Ky Blue in that blend - so you will be just fine! The idea is that you don't want 100% of one single cultivar.

    Have you ever heard of spreading Blood Meal on your lawn for the deep blue green look? I wonder what the cons would be?. Or if it even works. March I applied Triple 17 heavy Lime 3 weeks later after a few hard rains I applied 30-4-8 slow release fertilizer. Can I apply scotts max green or is that overkill?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  10 років тому

      Hey Jay. I have not heard of blood meal, but I assume it has iron in it - that is what makes lawns blue. If that is what you want, I'd use Milorganite. As far as more fert, I'd say "no" - seems like you have put down plenty for right now. you don't want to push over growth. As a rule, you should keep your treatments 5-6 weeks apart and not apply more than 1 lb of N in a single app.

    • @dadoorsron
      @dadoorsron 10 років тому

      Blood meal is a high iron source and that's what makes turf green up without accelerated growth. It will make the Kentucky blue grass in the turf get that dark blue green hue. You can purchase fertilizer with FE (iron) in it. Liming your turf is only recommended if a soil test show a low PH. Most studies show that lime application are best done in the fall and applications are near 50-100 lbs/ 1000 sqft.. It takes a considerable amount of time for the lime to work through the soil to do any good.
      Depending on the type of turf grass you have in your lawn the requirements of most turfgrass is 4 pounds of Nitorgen per 1000 sqft. So if you do use 30-4-8 you should wait 8-12 weeks before your next application. More is not good. Your turf can only take in so much nutrients during a growing season. If you follow the lawn care nut organic program you can easily go 4-6 weeks in between applications. Milorganite works well over extended usage. Feeding microorganism in the soil. Healthy soil leads to healthy turf.

  • @gtc731
    @gtc731 8 років тому +1

    Hi Allyn!, man it's good to see another person addicted to his lawn (if I may) like myself. Just watched a couple of your videos and intend to watch a few more. So...question about killing mature crab grass. Spose I could save the money and wait out the season right? I mean the life cycle is "dead to the root" once the snow flies up here in the Northeast? leaving behind their seeds for me for the next spring. So are their any benefits to killing the mature crabs (other then eye appeal), or should I nuke them ? cause once mature and gone to seed, the damage is done right? Got to really hit-em-hard in the spring with the pre-emergent, and then stay on top of any baby crabs that manage to start popping up? does this make sense?
    thanks/Gary

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  8 років тому +2

      +Gary Chalifoux yes it makes perfect sense. My opinion is just to let it go at this point. Not worth killing it. Just make sure you do a double pre-m application in spring. If you can get your turf thicker, it will also choke out any future crab grass germination as well.

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  10 років тому

      Hi Matt - there are literally dozens and dozens of insect issues that lawns can develop. Some insects feed topside, others in the root zone, and still others don't feed on lawns at all but still cause damage. Me personally, I keep my lawn super thick and rarely have to treat for insects, even when they invade.

    I too like to use synthetic in harmony with organic fertilizer, synthetic fertilizers can save a dying lawn. However, I do prefer drop spreaders to broadcast ones, but I cannot find a steel drop spreader that's affordable, have you noticed this they are very expensive. You can get great Earthway broadcast spreaders for just over $100.00 *(commercial variety) with pneumatic tires, but not the drop spreaders, your looking at $450.00 - $700.00. Do you know of any source where I might be able to purchase one for less, and not the green plastic ones from you know who.

    • @Thelawncarenut

      I'm not sure as I've never purchased a drop spreader. I'd check your local John Deere Landscapes outlet to see if they have them.
