Hey Jim! Thanks for this video. We live down in Summerville, SC and I just picked up one of these beauties at the nursery for my fence. Excited to get it in the ground - thanks for the instructions and I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos!
Do you notice it only being fragrant in the afternoon? At my friends place a smelled something nice and fragrant in the afternoon and it was the only thing I saw blooming. But it wasn’t a consistent scent.
I have about 35 ft of this growing along my gutters so that it hangs down along my lanai. It’s so big and beautiful! Literally smells like someone sprayed a light perfume all throughout my backyard. I wish I could post pics!
Was not aware to mix Carolina (Gelsemium sempervirens) and Swamp Jessamine (Gelsemium rankinii) in order to have a fall display. I have found, however, that this plant will strangle other plants by rapping around their stems and as that plant grows in girth it will get choked. I transplanted about a dozen wild Carolina Jessamine seedlings to an arbor and fencing but after 2 years have found that they have not been great flower producers so I intend on replacing all of them next season with named varieties that are purchased at a plant nursery. Great video!!
Middle Ga and they grow abundantly among the brush near my apartment. They smell soooo good. I just learned it was toxic but, I'm still researching...😮
I've planted mine where I hope it will grow up the cedar fence. Should I install a grate/grid or vertical trellis? Or will it cling to the cedar fence eventually without a support?
Thanks for all the info! 🙂 I'm looking for a beautiful, flowering vine to grow around a half-gazebo, over a hot tub. I am hoping to find one with bright, colorful flowers... but I don't want it to "shed" too much (like morning glories)... AND, I''d like for the flowers to be somewhat fragrant! I heard you say that this plant isn't as fragrant, so I might keep looking. ...It sure does have a beautiful blossom though! :-)
Very helpful! Jim, could you grow this in a container? Was thinking of one for the railing on my back steps. I’d give it a good prune after flowering to keep it under control!
Thank you for all your amazing videos. I absolutely love them. Truly informative. I was wondering, can you mix this with Trumpet Vine? If not, what evergreen flowed vine can you mix with a trumpet vine?
Growing in Tucson how many hours of sun and how often to water. Thanks just bought it yesterday and excited. Greatly informative video thanks Sorry forgot can you keep these in a pot on the porch?
I planted carolina jasmine in containers this past spring. I put them next to a privacy fence. I did not put them in the ground because the ground is covered in white rock. I am old. Too hard to shovel, lol. I am in 8b on the eastern shore of virginia: salt air and wind. Can I leave the containers outdoors this winter or will it freeze and kill the plants? I do have space to put them in the shed but.... I am old and lazy.
Thanks for your video Jim. Is it true bugs and deer don't eat this, and most afids don't last long because it is actually a highly toxic plant? Not safe for small children or dogs either if flowers are eaten?
Hi we just planted one of these beautiful vines. It’s droopy and I wondered if I was overwatering it. We planted it about 2 weeks ago in a half whiskey barrel. Can you give me any hints?
I inherited this plant from the previous owner. It is on the mailbox and huge. I want to cut it all the way down close to the ground. Can I do that and when should I do that?
Mine has been planted for almost 3 years along chain link fence. It's not spreading very much, it does flower. I'm pretty disappointed I wanted it to cover the fence. Can you recommend a certain fertilizer and show how to mix it?
Thanks for the video! I'm in Georgia and my Jessamine is not growing so well in the pot. I believe it had thrips and gets yellow leaves all the time (fungus?)! Nothing I do seems to help. Any ideas?
I have a Carolina Jassamine in a container. I bought it in the spring and it grows nicely but the leaves have never looked vibrant. And, it has not bloomed until now in January. I did some additional research and some sources say that it will bloom starting in Dec. through May. I'm in North/Central Georgia. Now that I know it's not in a dormant state... I want to make sure I'm caring for it properly. What should I do to care for it in the winter? I've been ignoring it. :-) And, watering it occasionally.
In very hot N Texas my plant we’re doing great but all of a sudden the leaves are becoming yellow. I’ve read that too much or too little watering can cause this- how can I tell which it is? Also I have been using Miracle Gro about every 3 months - is this too much?
I live in Arizona - the guy at the nursery said that in indirect AZ summer sun it should be ok- the sun can get to a brutal 120 degrees here. I plan to plant it in partial shade- any recommendations for this dry and hot climate?
Hello! I need help ASAP!! I wish I had watched your video before repotting my Virginia Jessamine yesterday. I thought my mom knew better than me so I asked her what I should do to repot it and she told me I could remove some of the roots when I removed the plastic liner it came in because it wouldn't fit in the wooden planter I was transferring it to. Sadly this morning the leaves were droopy 😥 I felt so bad because I should have gone with my gut feeling that removing the root was like removing a limb. What can I do??? A neighbor told me I should buy something for plant shock.
@HortTube with Jim Putnam, I had this growing on the porch at my last house & my Son-in-Law has prohibited putting it on our porch at the new house. I have a mature hardwood tree in the sunny front yard with a low branch cluster. I think the tree would not be negatively impacted, it could also grow down the slope there. What's your opinion?
+Molly Salout They bloom on new growth so the size of the plant doesn't really mean anything for flowering. It needs to be pruned some in the late winter and fertilized.
Hi Jim, I live in South San Francisco, California, close to the coast (zone 10A). Our temperature is around 60s with late Indian summer it does not get higher than 80s on a few hot days. I have this plant leaning against the wall of the house in the front and it has not bloomed a single flower in the 3-4 years that I have it. It does grow and climb but just with green leaves. A note though our area has constant wind if that maybe a factor for lack of bloom? I don't really fertilize but uses Osmocote once a year. Any suggestions to help it bloom some flowers? Thanks!
Hi Jim, great video. We planted ours a year ago on a large 5x8' trellis. I have strings holding them up and the plant not weaved its way very well through the trellis. I'm wondering if I can cut it down and try to re-train it? The trellis openings are small (1.5" squares), so also thinking the plant is not going through. They are about 5-8' long now, can they be cut down to 1-2'?
I was alarmed when I saw yellow jasmine was poisonous. I did not know there was two different ones. I'm sure the nursery would not sell something like that. I have it planted now. Like your video
Swamp Jessamine and Carolna Jessamine will play nice together, but Confederate jasmine and Carolina Jessamine don't play nice together. Planted separately they are fine and would extend the bloom time.
@@JimPutnam hey plzook in the comments as there is a man named Jim I do believe that is having major issues and was begging for ur opinion. I just hate to see the plant go to waste and u night lose a viewer
Okay so I believe this is the same plant in my yard. for the first time I see long cylinder type pods? Are those seeds? Very long and skinny? Thank you
Hi Jim, I inherited a beautiful big Carolina Jasmine in our new house. It is all along the back wall of our yard. There is a ton of dead undergrowth on it, but the vines are green and it flowers. The dead undergrowth is pushing the vines out a lot from the wall. Our neighbors behind the wall just cut the vines that had intertwined with their honeysuckles and the Carolina Jasmine vines on our side are now about to fall off the wall. Any suggestions on how to trim undergrowth and not damage the healthy vines that are starting to bloom now?
I just broke my carolina jessamine trying to transfer it.. where the base is on the surface. is there any chance it will root? it just started blooming again :(
Thank you. My jessamine has not bloomed in the last two years. I'm in zone 7a. I keep it in a fairly good sized container in a mostly sunny spot. Any suggestions? Thanks again for your informative video.
Hi Jim, Please help; no one here seems to know what’s happening to my plants! Wish I could include pictures but seems I cannot here... :) Last week the Green Acres fellow said that I was watering them too much; this week they look even worse with the reduced watering. I spoke with a different fellow at Green Acres today and he says to water longer less often with smaller drips. I’m in Antelope CA 95843 and I water M,W & F each week for 8 minutes each morning (0600) on 3 gallon drips. When the fellow said O need to cut back water I changed the drip to a 1 gallon drip and time to 5 minutes, three times a week. I haven’t had even one problem with either of these vines all (mostly dry), but chilly Winter until now when the temps are getting into the high sixties mid day. The older plant was gardener planted last May 2021 and the younger plant was planted by me last Fall in September. Please help… I have run out of options and I truly love these vines; I’m retired as of end last month so I have all the time in the world to dedicate to these vines, so please help! Thanks Jim Stay safe, be well, and many beautiful growing seasons ahead to you Sir!
Live in Virginia. Planted this last year and it has gotten fuller but is the same height. What do I need to do. Is it because I am in Virginia and it is Carolina jasmine?😂😂🤣🤪😂
I want this to grow on my cedar fence surrounding my courtyard. The nursery said chicken wire would be a good way to get it to twine up the fence. What do you suggest to get it going along the fence. Thank You!
I have this in zone 8B, I have ripped it out 6 times now, because instead outside my gutter drain, it grows up it and clogs it. Why previous owners planted it there is beyond me..lol
Excellent info. The tip about growing it with swamp jessamine is deeply appreciated.

What do you think, Jim: Will Caroline jessamine grow in our hot dry desert climate here in Phoenix AZ?
It absolutely grows in Phoenix. I have a huge one in my backyard that I've done very little to tend to, and it is very happy. Even flowers in spring.
@@hannahparmelee8212 does it need to be in full shade or sun? I live in Tucson.
can the Caroline Jasmine grow in a large planter?
It's kind of a weed. It will grow anywhere. Just don't overwater it.
Can I “extend” the blooming season by planting a true jasmine with Ms. Carolina? Is it a good idea?
Swamp Jessamine and Carolna Jessamine will play nice together, but Confederate jasmine and Carolina Jessamine don't play nice together. Planted separately they are fine and would extend the bloom time.
