Informative and to the point. In stalking these at lowes for 18.98 each.. You mentioned privacy screening exactly why I want then. The red will look good with my Japanese maples in my backyard with a lot of sun
Cash Rules I’ve recently become infatuated with Japanese Maples. I have 3 of them at the moment. I actually lost one this summer because of the scorching heat. My favorite is the Acer Shiahigashara (Lions Head). Gona have to get some of these bushes though 🔥💥🌳
That was a fantastic demonstration, as I am a novice gardener. I like the look of the dwarf burning bush and he convinced me that I really do want to plant one or two this spring. Thanks for the great information and I will tune back in again, such good information.
Wow! This is the most informative video I've seen in a very long while. Everything I was going to ask was addressed. Thank you. I've subscribed and will share your channel with all my Garden loving friends 😁
Well you convinced me to replace my current shrubs, you didn't say how to space them out. Right now I have a row of 18 shrubs. I wish you had a small table or something to put the thing down it drove me nuts watching you switch it from hand to hand but overall a great presentation.
Are these being added to the Noxious Weed List too? In MN, I just read that the Winged Burning Bush is being added to the State's Noxious Weed List and will be phased out from sales within 3 years. Are there other bushes with a similar name or that are not as invasive but have bright fall colors too? I do have deer in my yard, even though I do live in the city. Thank you! Great Video too!
Thanks for this video. I’m planing to get a few of these plants as a “Good buffer” I live in Bakersfield and knowing that this is a drought tolerant plant makes me feel more convinced that I need this plant.
Thank you for this!! I bought a DBB, on clearance, in June... it's not very big and most of the leaves have fallen. Right now, the topmost leaves are still on it, and are starting to turn red. It's still in the container it came in. I plan to transplant it to a larger container (10th floor balcony with sunrise to noon sun). I know it wasn't 100% when I got it but its present leafless-ness is worrisome. I would definitely appreciate any tips you may give me, especially if I should transplant to the larger container in the fall or spring. I'll be bringing it inside during the winter (northern Ontario). Again, thank you for any tips you may have.
I planted a Dwarf burning bush in my yard last fall in Wisconsin. I began reading about how invasive they are and that they are banned in a lot of states. I inquired about that on another web site and was told that they are banned in a lot of places but they are able to sell them because they are sterile plants. Can you explain what is meant by a sterile plant please? Thanks, love your channel!
Wow! I've been watching your videos lately and no one explains as well as you do! I love it! Thank you for all the helpful tips... I live in zone 9b and your tips really help! 👍🏻👍🏻 and I just bought 3 unforgettable fire plants so I hope it's similar to what you just explained
Hello from Italy . There is a chance to send you a picture of my euonymus Alatus taken at the nursery . However , what I would like to ask is on pruning . Want to shorten the plant by giving it a bonsai setting . The plant is adults so some branches will not be able to bend them or have tall woody branch . Can I drastically cut a branch as big as a finger hoping for growth of new branches or I have to go back year by year thanks
Hello Jim, thank you very much for this very informative video. It was a big help for me. You mentioned that the deers eat these burnig bushes. Other sources on the internet are saying deers does not like this plant at all. Can you please confirm? Thank you very much sir.
I am having trouble with one of my male dogs haveing a pissing contest by himself. He has killed a cedar and a pine, I want to know if a burning bush could live through a dog with terrible outside toilet manners, I have one I need to plant but I havent decided where to plant it yet, thanks
Jim-- Planted my four Burning Bushes in April. The three clustered together 4-ft apart appear to be doing well. But I'm noticing brown tipping on some of the leaves on the free standing bush located on the opposite side of the yard. This bush, approx. 4-ft from the house, is surrounded by a layer of landscaping rocks. Red bark mulch surrounds the other three bushes. Any suggestions?
What can I do to make my burning bush turn red it has a faint red reddish color, but it does not turn completely red which defeats the purpose of getting a burning bush please help
Interesting video. I had my heart set on Burning Bush for a privacy barrier on my front lawn. But we have a major deer problem. Is there anything similar to Burning Bush that the deer would ignore?
I have a burning bush that was planted about 10 years ago very well-established, does well every single year but now at this time it is starting to wilt, the leaves are wilting they’re not turning brown. What would cause that
Just want to also add that rabbits trimmed my burning bushes up as high as they could reach. Made it have an even more exaggerated fountain shape that is rather nice actually. We also have significant deer pressure, but for some reason (knock wood) the deer have left them alone. In many videos and articles there is information about deer resistance, but rarely do I hear rabbits mentioned. We are bothered by rabbits, deer, voles/moles/chipmunks (tunneling) in addition to the usual insect type pests. Especially bad problems with tunneling animals and rabbits.
I was told that deer don’t touch this plant, and in fact, we get deer coming through our yard all the time (I’ve seen as many as 10 at once, and I often find them sleeping in my yard). We have a mature burning bush in the yard - we have lived in the house for 20 years and it was there when we moved in. and they have never touched it, yet they munch on pretty much everything else growing in the yard.
I live in central Florida. Hardiness Zone 9b, heat zone 11. I ordered 5 burning bushes online from home depot. Instead I received 5 dwarf burning bushes. The first listed through zone 9. These stop at 8. I already have them, so is there anything I can do to help them survive or what about my climate will make it not possible? I was thinking of a drier area that mostly gets only morning sun. Would full sun and damper soil be better or worse? I could even place them in shade.
Thanks for an easy to grasp tutorial. QUESTION: When's the best time for Spring planting in La Junta, (Southeast) Colorado? La Junta offers every climate risk but hurricanes-- flooding rains, severe drought, tornadic storms, snow and incredibly wide temperature ranges-- blistering hot summer days-- high 90s to low 100s-- occasional bitter cold winter days with nights as cold as minus-zero. Four potted Burning Bushes waiting to be planted, so looking forward to your reply ASAP. Thanks again!
I was wondering one thing re: the Compactus: how much can you trim it in HORIZONTALLY without losing color density? I am thinking of planting these right in front of a curb so trimming inwards from the road may be an issue. Also, will the roots running into a curb in one direction prevent good growth?
I have two dwarf burning bushes planted to hide my generator. Tore out the deck and have stamped concrete. The bushes are probably a foot from the patio. Should I transplant due to maybe the roots messing with the concrete eventually?
HortTube with Jim Putnam if I kept them shaped up? I guess I was more worried about the roots disrupting the cement. I’ll take a picture....don’t see where to add a picture 🤔 I see your point, I will dig them up to transplant.
HortTube with Jim Putnam I planted them to hide our generator. I bought off a very reputable nursery. Will keep them trimmed up. Should I dig up now? Zone 6
For it being so hardy, I have lost two of them and can't figure out why. Denver, Colorado area. I wonder if getting too much water, sprinkler hit it. Then again, stalks have died back like bug it getting it. I've sprayed and fertilized annually. Any ideas?
It's possible they are to wet, but they are actually invasive in the north around water ways. If you retry them, mound them up a little when you plant them
I planted four of them last year and one of the bushes won't grow. Funny thing is this one has the most sun. Can you tell me why it grows slower the the other ones?
Loved this video, but I have a question!! So clearly the person who planted our burning bushes did not know what they were doing! They were planted in a cluster of 5, but they were planted in full shade (which would explain the lack of color ). They are 2 years old and HERE IS THE QUESTION - can we dig them up and move them without killing them???
Rabbits LOVE these!!! You don’t cage them before late winter where I live…. You can kiss that bush goodbye more than likely if you have healthy bunny populations
In my area Mid-Atlantic 7b this is a Tier 2 Noxious Weed. I thought I had 1. Ha! I've lost count how many there are. I wish you would take this video off your channel. I was looking for videos on burning bush removal and this video popped up.
Great video...I have the so-called dwarf bush for 30 years and it has never disappointed me here in the NY area of its gorgeous red color....except for last year. It never gor red which was a complete disappointment for me. Any ideas why that would happen? We are now in OCtober and so far it hasn't been cold enough to change its color...hopefully by Nov..if not, I may have to discard it, cause it was mainly for its Fall color that we wanted it.
Very informative and educational video.. Quick question -- my dwarf burning bushes (currently about 3 ft in height have a lighter green color vs the darker green of the one you were holding... Is that a sign of a soil problem?
I'd been thinking about getting this bush and here I find your video. Lately the deers have been encroaching in my neighborhood. So I'm kind of disappointed to know that the deers will munch them down. Is there a way to divert them without fencing them? Will appreciate your suggestions very much. I might still get one and fence it up. How will I know it's a dwarf burning bush when I'm buying it?
I bought 3 of these on sale the other day. The bed I am planting them in is very shaded, will they still be able to grow with minimal shade? Thanks for your time!
For a zero maintenance plant this one is big on Fall color. A vibrant Red color. Great Video Jim!
BRO, you taught me EVERYTHING in one shot!!

thanks! would have been nice to see more of the shrub in its fall colour.
I loved this video and I can't wait to go thru all the others. I think it's very informative w/out wasting a lot of time w/unnecessary info. Congrats!

Thank you for this video. When planting in a mass around a well pipe sticking out of the ground, how far to place them away from the pipe ? Thank you

This bush is listed as an invasive species. I love the burning bush but I'm having second thoughts about it.
Loved this video. Made it easy to convince my husband we need these in our yard! Thank you
It would be good to see you plant it .
Love your videos. Very helpful information. Please Jim, get a table to set the plant on while you give us the information. New subscriber!
Hahahahahhahaha my hubby said the same thing!!
Thank you! Excellent - you answered all the critical issues.

Hi, jim thanks for ur video. cutting or seeds of burning bush, which is more successful???

Is the burning bush the same bush as the fire bush. I saw one today bright red and a person told me it was a fire bush.

Will the root system on the burning bush destroy the foundation of your house if planted by your house
Just watched several of your zone 5 videos. Awesome stuff. Thank you.
I just planted this I’m praying it thrives

The leaves on my burning bush are curling. What might be the cause of this?
Very interesting Thank you I received mine today

They are super tough plants. Anytime this spring or summer would be fine
@@JimPutnam Thanks Jim!
How close together can these be planted?
this is the best information site thanks
I live in Seattle , I can use those burning Busch to build my back yard screen?
Hi there - can you tell me if I can plant this plant in the late spring in zone 8 (georgia)?
I know these are drought tolerant but will they do well in desert environments with around 15-30% humidity and temps over 100°?
I was wondering one thing re: the Compactus: how much can you trim it in HORIZONTALLY without losing color density? I am thinking of planting these right in front of a curb so trimming inwards from the road may be an issue. Also, will the roots running into a curb in one direction prevent good growth?
Could you do a video on types of shrubs that may do well in planters? I'm local and in your zone. Thanks - love the videos from a local nursery!
That is a great suggestion. I will do that.
Wonderful -- I'll look forward to it!
Is the burning bush ok to plant near a house foundation?
very detailed info! thanks!
Do the berries attract ants by any chance?
that was a helpful video you just earned a subscriber here
My burning bush looks like little swigs no foliage or red berets is it dead?
They loose there leaves in the winter.
How can I tell if mine is a dwarf, it was here when we bought the house.
It would he hard to tell. Mine are dwarf and they are 6 feet tall after 20 years a mid a couple of prunings.
I bought two dwarf burning bush probably 18-22 " tall ,young 3yr old plant I believe, all the leaves fell off in winter. Is that normal?
Yes, they are deciduous
can i just keep it in a big pot
Very informative.....thank you so much for sharing
Very informative. Thank you.
I have two dwarf burning bushes planted to hide my generator. Tore out the deck and have stamped concrete. The bushes are probably a foot from the patio. Should I transplant due to maybe the roots messing with the concrete eventually?
That is probably to close. Even if the roots aren't a problem, they are going to get to large.
HortTube with Jim Putnam if I kept them shaped up? I guess I was more worried about the roots disrupting the cement. I’ll take a picture....don’t see where to add a picture 🤔 I see your point, I will dig them up to transplant.
My dwarf burning bushes are over six feet tall. I will show them in the next walk through video. Thanks for watching and commenting
HortTube with Jim Putnam I planted them to hide our generator. I bought off a very reputable nursery. Will keep them trimmed up. Should I dig up now? Zone 6
Anytime. They are like weeds. Might want to trim them back a little to compensate for root damage.
For it being so hardy, I have lost two of them and can't figure out why. Denver, Colorado area. I wonder if getting too much water, sprinkler hit it. Then again, stalks have died back like bug it getting it. I've sprayed and fertilized annually. Any ideas?

You can definitely move them. I would cut them in half, dig them up, and pop them back in the ground. No problem.

Thanks for the quick response Jim! Yes, the veins are visible on the top side of a good portion of the leaves...

They will grow, but probably be thin and not get great fall color. Six hours or more would be best.
Can you make a video actually planting one. Lol. I need to see it. Great info though.
Thank you!! Very helpful 😊
Thanks for watching
