Please get a flax/wax stuffing box. You can re-stuff at sea. In 50 years of sailing, including two Pacific passages to French Polynesia, I have never seen a “dripless” shaft gland that can stand the test of long range cruising. It’s a false promise and you cannot fix them in the water. Particulates get in and score the fancy engineering bits and you get leaks. Then you have to haul out to really fix them. You are an inspiration.
My wife and I are long time cruisers, and this is the only sailing channel I ever look at. Non commercial, real, resourceful, determined -- I admire your style. One bit of advice. It puts a lot of strain on the windlass motor to run it without an alternator going. You don't have to put the engine in gear, so no worries about the stuffing box. Of course this assumes you have a power windlass, guess I'm not sure about that. Ken (S/V Eagle's Wings)
Could you elaborate why it would matter for the windlass motor whether or not the alternator is running? As far as I understand the windlass motor gets its power from the battery and the alternator charges the battery. So why would it matter for the windlass motor whether or not the battery is being charged at the same time it is running? The motor itself just draws current from the battery, whether it's being charged or not, right?
If I remember correctly the issue is that the windlass draws a ton of current all at once which is hard on the batteries and running electric motors at low voltage causes them to overheat quickly and burn out faster. Having the engine on and alternator running prevents the voltage from dropping down below the level the motor was intended to be operated at. The problem is diesel engines don't like to be run for short periods at low to zero load. Tough call. I just pull my anchor up by hand or use a winch on the mast 🤷♂️
As I see the two of you on the sailboat, I remember saying I heard. "You don't just have to love somebody to live on a boat with them, you have to like them too."😂. I'm jealous what you guys are doing . Enjoy 🤘🙏🤙
Love, like, hate are irrelevant. Once, during a long race, I steered clear of a shipmate with whom I sensed personal friction. One dark night with VERY light winds, I grew impatient, started giving constant orders. Raise this, drop that steer here, steer there, boom over, boom back, weight this side, that side. At the bar on the island, he said to me "I really liked the way you made the boat move". Any friction between shipmates was instantly greased.
haven't watched you for quite awhile. Busy with life. I want to comment about your appearance. You are now a lean mean machine. They say that people who live on sailing boats...you will find no fat sailors. I sail a 30 foot trimaran coastal. People who don't sail have no idea how much work there is to keep things going. Proud of all that you have accomplished. keep on truckin
Seeing you sail where i used to live is pretty cool, there is a lot to explore from Townsville to Cairns, Hinchinbrook National Park, Bedarra, Barnard and Dunk Islands, out to the reef for an overnight if the weather is good, up the river into Innisfail but I know time is always a factor, thanks for showing the world our little piece of it. For anyone else heading that way on land there is great little towns between the two city’s that worth a few days on the itinerary.
If you can visit Hinchinbrook Island, especially Zoe Bay. On the southern end of the beach, there is an amazing waterfall. My Dade's ashes were scattered there by my Mum (with the permission of the National Parks service).
Had my liveonboard burn to the bottom. One thing I took away from that experience was do not lash up your dinghy so you can't get out your only other escape hatch if there is a fire at the stern of your boat.
when the main sail is up why don't you push the boom to the direction opposite of the tack you would to be after leaving the ancre? or walk backward with the mooring in the hand along the side of the tack you would like to be and then release the mooring line?
Have you tried putting more grease in the shaft sealer while the shaft is SLOWLY turning, ( turn by hand if you can ). Sounds like, you have an air bubble in the seal area.
Look for some of the videos where she talks about her family and early life. Answer: she practically grew up sailing. I’d be on Cap’n Holly’s crew anywhere.
I would like to see more about your dingy and your protection you (looks like sewed to it) as well as that mercury outboard what is it? Thank you Happy. Thanks giving
Pretty cool, pretty layback, I do wonder if things are really that uncomplicated, or if its more like a Swan gliding effortlessly on the surface, while the legs are going furiously below the water - do you like the analogy? 🙂
Hey Holly, add in where you're at in relation to Australia ie: west coast, east coast. Did Dan borrow a pair of your pants, those green ones? Looking very stylish!
I wanted to know if your boat is actually much faster since doing all that work on the haul out? I think you said it used to do 4 knots before and you were expecting it now to do about 6-7 knots with the re-finished hull work. What is the actual increase in speed? Thanks. I’ve been following you about 6 months.
@ Maybe. I can’t relate. A phone is difficult to navigate because you’re always moving the map around with your fingers. And an iPad starts at $360 on Amazon. Android tablets are less expensive than that
Passing on a boom brake/preventer tip I was told and love; Get an abseiling rescue figure 8 (50kn, one with the horns) under $30au, send a line from a strong cockpit cleat through a frictionless ring or bow shackle at the chainplate, back to ⅔ on the boom where you have the figure 8 attached with soft shackle to sheet point or webbing, then over to other side chainplate to be tied off with bowline. This forms a sort of W from chainplate to figure 8 to chainplate back to cockpit. When you now put pressure on that line now you have a preventer until it gets overwhelmed (where normally a static preventer can cause boom yoke or gear damage) and then when overwhealmed it slowly goes through a controlled jybe. You can tension this as you wish from cockpit, a winch helps. In lighter weather just use normally as figure 8 absiel, as it gets stronger wrap line around horn, or then two , for more friction. Does not have to be attached/detached going from tacking to jybing, or from side to side, just losen or tension where needed. Can also be used as a type of boom gallows, keeping the boom to one side at anchor, or keeping boom in place with drouge or flopper stopper in bad rolls.
sharpen your hooks with a point file, maybea nail file, you know when its sharp enough if you drag it across your thumbnail and it digs in, no pressure at all it should stop and what to dig in means you have your barb sharp and pointed the proper direction, the tip barb want to point back in towards the shaft.. have your file on you at all times and check hook sharpness each time you have a bump or hit the bottom so forth.. that tip is what actually grabs the fish and then sigs it in assapposed tothe opposite a dull hook with just poke em so they spit it out.. OMG! I just noticed you have over 100k subs! I started watching you when you had like 5k subs. Wow! Congratulations. Fair Winds & Following Seas!
lol, likewise!!
Me THREE
Same here! Congratulations Holly!
You do know that you are one of a few bad ass sailors in the World.
I love your positive nature. It doesn’t come across as fake. Authentic people rock! Thanks for another interesting post.
The Geck is moving faster! It's noticeable for sure!
Like how you've worked out the jib halyard setup for emergencies!

A little nostalgic for the solo sailor days
It's been a while since u have sailed on a longer trip.. cool to see u under way ... and having Dan is a bonus! ⛵️ Hi Dan!! You are da man!! Hehehe.

Hey Holly, for the stern gland it may be worth trying to replace the grease nipple if you haven't done so yet... Enjoy the Aussie coast sailing!
Really enjoyed and learned from your How To, as well as every thing else. Fair winds and sunshine!
You look really happy. Nice tuition!
To make a good seat on Sweet Dreams I lean on a big flat fender resting on the Bimini frame… very nice video…
Real sailor
Love that you had a great sail. Really enjoyed that you explained everything
Another great video. Thanks for sharing Holly! Greetings from Birch Harbor, Maine!

yay, sailing again! Cheers from Maine!
What happened to the new Harken roller furling that you installed with the new sail?
Was going to ask the same…
The roller furler was installed in the future. Installed in Darwin from memory and Holly hasn't even reached Cairns in this video.
Also I think "Puss" has been replaced too.
Love your content ❤
Glad you are two onboard now. Much better
Windy Hippy was in Horseshoe Bay 2 years ago !!!!!
I love the pearls...blessings...m
Lovely Perl necklace
This was very informative 👏🏼
backwind the main ... in this case push the boom to port ... pushes the bow to starboard ... 2 cents
If you can visit Hinchinbrook Island, especially Zoe Bay. On the southern end of the beach, there is an amazing waterfall. My Dade's ashes were scattered there by my Mum (with the permission of the National Parks service).
You need permission from the government to scatter ashes?
@@captainjimolchs My Mum was not taking any chances so she got permission to overfly the area in a light aircraft and scatter them there.
@@jonathanbourner8763 Could you not have done that on the ground without permission?
Had my liveonboard burn to the bottom. One thing I took away from that experience was do not lash up your dinghy so you can't get out your only other escape hatch if there is a fire at the stern of your boat.
Did you survive?

you get yourself a bo? NICE! someone to talk out on the water keeps you from cracking up when it gets tough . .
An extra hand doesn't hurt, either.
I enjoyed your video 😊 cool little boat, good skills 👍 fair winds
Loved those wind whisperer secrets! You rock Wind Hippie! Also have you tried lanolin spray instead of silicone spray?
Mission Beach would of bin a beautiful place for you guys to visit.. maybe another time ⏲️
Awesome episode guys
Pepperjack a good choice to make a great day, enjoy!
good to see her enjoying a beau
Glad to see you are sailing. Love the humor. Wink wink lmao.
This soundtrack is fire, good pick!
I love that you de-roller fooled. What made you see da light? Or was I just imagining you had roller fooling? Some strange time warp?.
Wonderful episode as always, thank you for that. What has happened to your furling system?
Steady as she goes mates :::::: 🙋🏼♂️🙋♀️🇨🇦👍
I highly recommend this book the light of Iman available on Amazon and Apple books etc
A wonderful video! ❤
Thanks for the tour and the information Holly, but I don't think that I'm ready to solo Geck just yet.
I am! But pretty sure she won''t allow me.
So cool.
Many blessings
Nice job
Good to c u back on the water doing what u luv. Good on u. U guys stay safe…
Hi to Dan and you!!❤😂🎉
I'm very glad to see your channel do well. I wonder if you would ever get a larger boat? Although i feel bad for saying that.
Hi Holly, just making you aware of my e-mail regarding the December issue of Grinde Nyt. Love tracking your adventure ;-)
Definitely a want sail passage.
There is no better autopilot for a captain's sailboat than good crew !!!
Happy Thanksgiving Captain
I thought you installed a roller furler??
What a heavy boat you have! Mine's the same length but 2.7 tonnes. Accelerates well but bashing into waves is just demoralising. Have fun.
Don't bash. Head off.
@@captainjimolchs I have to bear away, although that some times is a diminishing return.

Such a talented creator, no joke!

Delightful!!

Where did you get your solar panel mounting hardware? I can't find any that attach to the rail like yours...

Phone seems to work for her. IPads are overpriced.
