The director Stephen Sommer did DEEP RISING before this movie. Deep rising is my favourite creature feature with a stellar cast. Sommer is a bit like verhoven they both have 3 movie's everybody has to watch sommer has DEEP RISING, THE MUMMY AND VAN HELSIN
10:13 To answer Jen's question: The Nile is the biggest river on the continent with no bridges. So if you end up on the wrong side, you're going to need to find a boat and move all your stuff and pack animals across which will take days, meaning even if the ones on the right side end up with no animals they still have a giant head start.
Mummy Returns deserves more credit for preserving the spark in the relationship as opposed to the modern trope of breaking them up in between sequels so that they can go over the exact same beats of the relationship again
Yeah that made me laugh too; back then there were no bridges upriver from Cairo, plus the crocodiles, would have meant that they'd have to find someone to ferry them across.
I'm with Jen and Holden. After Indiana Jones, this was one of the first epic adventure type movies I saw as a kid and it made a big impact on me. The Mummy reactions are ones I will click on immediately haha
The body farm is in Knoxville, TN. It is near the Univ of TN medical center. They put bodies in various situations such as shallow grave, out in the open, under a tarp, in a car, etc to see how the body decomposes over time. This information is used to help determine when death occurred in real cases.
To be fair, no one thought it was real. She didn’t know and no one else did until it was too late. She also did not run off but wanted to fix it and fought to stay and save the world. My favorite movie.
9:46 I believe that the director said in an audio commentary that Fraser was accidentally standing in front of the pyrotechnics and Weisz pulled him out of the way. The looks on their faces are for real.
Fun facts: -Brendan Fraser suffered permanent nerve damage from the hanging scene -During one of the first takes in the flashback opening, it was Brendan who came out in a loincloth and body paint to prank Arnold Vosloo -John Hannah (Jonathan) played the interviewed mycologist at the beginning of _The Last of Us_ -One of Bernard Fox's (Winston) last films. He was famous for his appearance on 1960s TV as Dr. Bombay in Bewitched and Col. Crittendon in Hogan's Heroes
The guy with the bug in his head (Omid Djalili) is a British stand up comedian he naturally speaks with a cockney London accent which is so funny seeing him here and he’s a great comedian should check him out
I saw him in this film first then I came across his stand up on Just for Laughs stand up and when he switched accents I was so confused. Great routine though best 5min😂
The fellow that played Winston, *"Bernard Fox",* was a prolific actor, and has had roles in many great comedies, dramas, war dramas, thrillers, family comedies, and voice overs, for movies, and TV. He'd be worthwhile digging into.
The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. Side trivia: 1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply). 2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel. 3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move. 4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.
Evie Is one of the best written and acted Female protagonists in film history,Rick O'Connell is the last of an age of great male heroic icons we don't see anymore and Jonathan is one of the most underrated side characters in film history and my favorite character in this series. This film and its sequel are my Generations Indiana Jones I also personally really enjoy the sequel.
😃 fun fact: the actor that played benni was disliked/hated by the camels on set for some unknown reason. The scenes where you see the camel making angry disgruntled sounds n not listening to him was real.
I did find one source that says in one scene, he slapped his camel really hard... and I guess the other camels didn't realize he was only acting. and decided to make his life hell. If that's the case, I doubt he could leave his trailer without being covered in camel saliva.
One thing I love about this film is its ensemble cast. Everyone gets a moment in the spotlight, even if it’s to be killed moments later. I always liked Jonathan and Beni. The former is a lovable cad while the latter is a craven, Peter Lorre style villain.
I recently saw this in theaters for the 25th anniversary and it may have been one of my top three all-time theater going experiences. I absolutely love this movie.
"Birthplace of Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh's mistress. No other man was allowed to touch her" In those final years of the century (1999), we went crazy with Patricia Velásquez. What a woman.
"Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river" means that Benny and friends, while they have the horses, are literally on the wrong side of the river - Hamunaptra is closer to the side that Rick and Evie were on, so Bennie and company would have to cross the river to get there.
This film was probably the first time I ever experienced the feeling of “do I want her or do I want to be her?” I mean, have you seen Rachel Weisz’ hair in this movie? Wowza!🤩
Archeology is one of the fields where you don't have to learn to see how the field advanced. The older generations often look like grave robbers compared to more modern methods. On top of that, Egyptology was one of the big crazes in Great Britain in the 19th Century and one that went on the longest. That's why they treat the map so carelessly after finding it.
Love the mummy, but the one thing I never understood was, if they were trying to stay alive and the mummy was afraid of cats why didn’t they just carry a cat with them everywhere they went.
One of the fortunate things that happened during production was the bookshelf toppling scene working perfectly on the first take. Imagine the time and money it would've cost to reset everything.
The actor that played Winston is Bernard Fox he’s famous for his role as Dr. Bombay on the classic television series Bewitched. Plus he was really big in the sixties and seventies.
3:43 just as a side note, mummification was actually a pretty expensive process even by the standards of ancient Egypt. Most of the Egyptians just buried their dead in the sand.

The horses are on the wrong side of the river? Always assumeed that the horses won't willingly swim across a wide, flowing river at this point and the nearest crossing to get back on the path to Hamunaptra is presumed to be a long way away up or downstream? Meaning O'Connell's party has a head start on getting there but Benny's is faster.
AMAZING!!! I love this movie so much, it has everything. action, comedy, romance, history, magic and great practical and cgi effects. evie IS a walking red flag but it's extremely endearing and there's only so much a woman can do in the early 1900s. literal magic happened when this movie was made. I'm glad it stands the test of time. also @18:55 - LOL jen , yallah means let's go or come on depending on context and imshi means go away or be gone. so he's basically always saying 'lets get the fuck outta here' xD
You're both in for a treat with this franchise! I'm about to do a rewatch of it in a kinda chronological order. The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior, The Scorpion King, The Scorpion King 5: Book of Souls, The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power, The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (I like to view the pre-title opening prologue is set earlier after the first Scorpion King), The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, both seasons from The Mummy: The Animated Series, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
the mummy trilogy: 1. The Mummy (1999) 2. The Mummy Returns (2001) 3. The Scorpion King (2002) // as a prequel to The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), and this should be watched last, the release order is the correct order for seeing them --------------- all of the other 'mummy' and/or 'scorpion king' movies, are really awful b-movies and/or b-tv-films, they just don't exist, 'the mummy' is a trilogy, and it's the 'scorpion king' as its 3rd movie, as the prequel to it, the 3rd 'mummy' movie is NOT the awful 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' with jet li, shudders (it gave, b-movies / b-tv-films a bad name, it was so bad awful horrible yuck) ---------- there's also a failed "remake" attempt with tom cruise, but it has nothing to do with 'the mummy' trilogy at all, it's completely its own (failed) movie: The Mummy (2017)
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 You can watch the franchise however you wish, that's the beauty of personal preference we can all make our own viewing orders. Enjoyment is subjective, a movie you or I might hate someone else may love, something you and I might love or like... someone else could hate. In any case I do feel out of all the spinoff features The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption is my favorite of the direct-to-DVD stories, it strikes a pretty good balance of serious and some comedy, it has a stellar supporting cast (Billy Zane, Ron Perlman, Temuera Morrison, Dave Batista), the director clearly gave genuine effort at giving some visual scope despite the lower budget and the story felt like a decent follow-up to The Rock's original Scorpion King.
Back in the 80's we watched mummy movies on Saturday mornings. Abbott and Costello met the mummy, i think the 3 stooges met the mummy. Boris Karloff was a very famous mummy
Still one of the best adaption of The Mummy films in the franchise. Plus, Rick, Eve, Johnathan, Ardeth, and Imhotep are the best well-rounded characters in cinema, in my opinion.
I totally understand the Evie criticism. And in hindsight being a viewer, you already know that crazy supernatural shenanigans are going to go down, but in the beginning of the film when she has the book, she is simply a librarian that doesn't believe in any of this Hocus pocus supernatural stuff other than that it's history. In staying true to who she is as a librarian, what is she going to do but read the book. Is very true to her character, but she did in fact make the biggest mistake in the film, which was then mostly rectified at the end.
Fun/ not-so-fun fact: Frasier was actually strangled and made unconscious during the rope hanging scene. Sommers wanted one more take to “really sell it” and they hoisted the rope higher and Frasier woke up on the ground with the stunt coordinator calling his name
The pyramids require a special permit to enter. On a different topic, the mirror trick would not be very effective. The mirrors would have to be moved frequently to allow sunlight to reflect off of them. As the sun moves across the sky, the angle of the sunlight would be constantly changing.
Warhorses were bred by the Parthians to be aggressive and obedient and absolutely did not wear blindfolds. Horses descended from warhorses would wear blinders that blocked their peripheral vision when pulling a wagon, but blinders did not block their forward vision. Generally warhorses didn’t wear blinders in battle, as they needed the peripheral vision to avoid collisions with other horses and riders.
Although this movie isn't completely accurate, remember this movie was set in the 1920s I believe so I can imagine archeologists weren't as careful, eg. Wearing gloves, as they are now.
My favourite Stephen Sommer movie is DEEP RISING it's my favourite creature feature. Beni is even in it plus loads of other great actor's I think at the end they end up on skull island
There are 3 mummy movies with a 4th on the way. The Mummy 4 - Teaser Trailer | Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz. Another great couple on screen is Nike & Nora from the movie series "The Thin Man" which is a detective mystery. The screen plays for the movie was by a married couple.
So the reason Imhotep's corps looks so "Abnormal" is because He isn't dead. Remember, he is cursed to be the "Undead" That body they dig up is alive, just chewed up by the beetles and Atrophied after 2k years. His soul is in the dark underworld being tortured. That's Imhotep's curse, the worst of all curses.
With all the Arabic that I've watched in movies and TV, I've only picked up on two things, that "yella" means "hurry" and Habibi I think means "friend" or "brother". I'm still not entirely sure on that last one.
The reason for several Body farms...is to be able to get accurate decomposition Data for many different scenarios when it comes to different type of Elevations, Climate, and the times of the Seasons of the regions in the U.S...then when all new Data is collected from all the Body Farms in the U.S...it is all uploaded into the National Crime Forensic system where it can help give an accurate length of Time in determining how long any Body/Bodies that are found out in the elements or vehicle's when all of the recent past weather Data is ran along with current/updated Body Farm data,
Brendan Fraser is in all 3 Mummy movies. Many of the other characters are in the second film which is also set in Egypt; but not in the third which is set in China.
5:07 actually no. By this time in human history, we were using percussion caps at the end of a bullet instead of having to refill the powder separate from the ammunition. (Ironically, percussion caps were created by a Christian minister.)
15:06 in essence, yes we become "juicy." fat (and water iirc) starts breaking down and leaking out of pores at some point. obvious different causes of death have different effects, but this generally happens at some point in the process. i don't think it's typically still present at the mostly skeletal stage though; that's what made Imhotep remarkable, that he WAS still juicy as by all accounts, he should've been dried all the way out lol
To quote someone else, this is the best India Jones movie, ever. This is one of the most enjoyable flicks I ever watched, and I will forever love the show Doom Patrol for giving me back Brendan Fraser, he is so charming.
10:15 Benny being on the wrong side of the river leaves him facing two options, both kinda bad for him...option 1, his group has to convince the horses to cross the river (a task that's easier said than done with a lot of horses), meaning they have to get themselves and all of their gear soaked (again) which makes for a really miserable travelling experience whether you're walking or on horseback (blisters and chafing/diaper rash are real, and they really really suck), while also taking a chance at some or all of their gear/provisions potentially getting washed away during the crossing; option 2, they go way out of their way to find a bridge or shallow part of the river to cross at, costing valuable time for their expedition and letting the "competition" get there first (and theoretically make any pertinent discoveries first). Either way, it looks bad for Benny.
I am surprised by the Evelyn slander. She of course Did not believe in the curse… I mean do you believe in the curses of egypt? It’s easy to say she is stupid, But I would not fear reading from That book. Aaaaand, she was the one wanting to stay and save the world and Rick wanted to run away. She also saved Ricks life multiple times. She is a good person If very clumsy
The Mummy taking the eyes of the guy who can't see really put himself at a huge disadvantage lol He might not have mistaken Evie for his lover if he had taken better eyes!
One of my favorite movies of all time, Rick is up there with Indiana Jones and Laura Croft as one of the most badass characters in these action adventure movies
I'm surprised that you brought up the "Body Farm". In addition to being a real place with 8 U.S. locations, it is also the name of a novel by Patricia Cornwell who often writes mystery books about a fictional Medical Examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her FBI daughter, Lucy IIRC. It is also the name of a British TV series. Scarpetta uses the Farm in her investigation of a brutal murder of an 11 year girl by the hands of a serial killer.
Wait, what do you mean that you and Holden don't understand the "wrong side of the river" line? It's just a one-up on Benny because now Rick has the upper hand. Benny and Rick were just playing a one-up game. Benny had the horses and Rick didn't. But Rick was on the right side of the river which sets Benny and his group back. Rick won the little one-up game they were playing in that scene. I'm not sure how difficult that was to understand but I hope this helps you understand it better now.
They recast Evie in the 3rd movie. Maria Bello and Brendan Fraser didn't have the same chemistry, but it actually kind of worked for a "We've been married 20 years and things are a little stale. Need a mummy adventure to reignite the spark," vibe.
Definitely one of my favourite classic monster/horror films, along with Halloween. The dynamics, action, humour and characters are top notch. The second film is also great too, more fast-paced, but still fun. My favourite characters are Ardeth, Rick and Johnathan
As much as I love this movie the one thing that never made sense to me was the curse itself. Its not a curse, its a blessing. Being killed by the scarabs was the only punishment. The "curse" just makes him a god for no reason if he is resurrected.
The whole wrong side of the river scene is not that hard to understand. Benny has the transport in this case the horses, but he is on the wrong side of the river. Meaning he would have to cross the river to get to Hamunaptra. O'Connell and his crew were on the right side of the river to get to Hamunaptra. Also yes it was Eve's fault, but see stayed wanting to fix things. She grew from a clumsy librarian to a brave woman fighting off mummy's. If we didn't have moments like these in films, TV shows and book then there would be no point making them.
Please tell me you guys are watching the second one too! One of my favorite parts is where they are yelling at each other across the river. Hilarious!! 😂

all of the other 'mummy' and/or 'scorpion king' movies, are really awful b-movies and/or b-tv-films, they just don't exist, 'the mummy' is a trilogy, and it's the 'scorpion king' as its 3rd movie, as the prequel to it, the 3rd 'mummy' movie is NOT the awful 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' with jet li, shudders (it gave, b-movies / b-tv-films a bad name, it was so bad awful horrible yuck)
----------
there's also a failed "remake" attempt with tom cruise, but it has nothing to do with 'the mummy' trilogy at all, it's completely its own (failed) movie: The Mummy (2017)
Apparently. He had a very good time.!!! 😂
The way a war horse is able to run into battle is by putting a blindfold on them, since they can't see they will run wherever you guide them.
I’ve been meaning to rewatch this film it’s been so long I forgot everything. Will be back when I do
Had this on vhs growing up so I always watched it and also loved it!
Good to see you guys again and I freaking love this movie
The museum curator wasn't a fool. He burned the map on purpose.
"Is he afraid of cats, or piano?" Had me laughing so hard
Brenden Fraser in Brothers is something I didn't know I needed
Love this movie so much!! Happy to see a recation from you ladies 🤌🏼
Glad seeing you both again
Love this movie!
Its a fun wild action adventure fantasy film from start to finish.
One of my favorite horror remakes. Brendan Fraiser was in the DC series Doom Patrol as Robo-man
Hey! Jen finally got the British accent down at 8:16 😁
My favourite Stephen Sommer movie is DEEP RISING it's my favourite creature feature.
27:10 Jen is channeling her inner Holden hahahahaha
So the reason Imhotep's corps looks so "Abnormal" is because He isn't dead. Remember, he is cursed to be the "Undead" That body they dig up is alive, just chewed up by the beetles and Atrophied after 2k years. His soul is in the dark underworld being tortured. That's Imhotep's curse, the worst of all curses.
I love the girlfriends reactions so much.
With all the Arabic that I've watched in movies and TV, I've only picked up on two things, that "yella" means "hurry" and Habibi I think means "friend" or "brother". I'm still not entirely sure on that last one.
IMXI = Move it or Walk
I have watched this movie prob 10 times in the last 2 years alone - never dull experience
The reason for several Body farms...is to be able to get accurate decomposition Data for many different scenarios when it comes to different type of Elevations, Climate, and the times of the Seasons of the regions in the U.S...then when all new Data is collected from all the Body Farms in the U.S...it is all uploaded into the National Crime Forensic system where it can help give an accurate length of Time in determining how long any Body/Bodies that are found out in the elements or vehicle's when all of the recent past weather Data is ran along with current/updated Body Farm data,
I was told that camels can run faster than horses. It kind of makes sense, considering they have longer legs, therefore bigger strides.
Love it when Natalie is in the video!
A movie you can just watch no matter how long its started
I just got done watching this movie in the morning. Now I am watching the scorpion King before I watch part two.
22:06 is probably my favorite scene for the entire movie
I am surprised by the Evelyn slander. She of course Did not believe in the curse… I mean do you believe in the curses of egypt? It’s easy to say she is stupid, But I would not fear reading from That book. Aaaaand, she was the one wanting to stay and save the world and Rick wanted to run away. She also saved Ricks life multiple times. She is a good person If very clumsy
The Mummy taking the eyes of the guy who can't see really put himself at a huge disadvantage lol
He might not have mistaken Evie for his lover if he had taken better eyes!
One of my favorite movies of all time, Rick is up there with Indiana Jones and Laura Croft as one of the most badass characters in these action adventure movies
The guy who play Imhotep always reminds me of the actor who played lex in smallville
😂. Both are good actor But I think Michael Rosenbaum ( Lex and also voice actor for flash in JLA) is a bit younger 😂 than Arnold Vooslo( Imhotep).
@@jayadevmenon7086 true
if you love Brendon Fraser in this one, you should check out Gorge of the Jungle.
It was so good seeing Bernard Fox in this movie. He will *always* be *Dr Bombay* to me (from *Bewitched* )
If you guys like The Mummy, Jungle Cruise has a similar vibe
I'm surprised that you brought up the "Body Farm". In addition to being a real place with 8 U.S. locations, it is also the name of a novel by Patricia Cornwell who often writes mystery books about a fictional Medical Examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her FBI daughter, Lucy IIRC. It is also the name of a British TV series. Scarpetta uses the Farm in her investigation of a brutal murder of an 11 year girl by the hands of a serial killer.
11:38 yes, you can go inside parts of many of the pyramids....at least when I was there in the late 80's
this movie is fan-tastic !!! that old Indiana Jones vibe, its awesome. Love love love it.
19.36 - Dudes _full_ of pockets, he's shredded duck.
5:05 Refill with gunpowder? you are aware this takes place in the 1920s right?
As much as I love this movie the one thing that never made sense to me was the curse itself. Its not a curse, its a blessing. Being killed by the scarabs was the only punishment. The "curse" just makes him a god for no reason if he is resurrected.
The Mummy Returns
The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Soon
The actor who plays the curator is also in 1994s Stargate
I love Jen for this
The whole wrong side of the river scene is not that hard to understand.
Yalla!
Imshi!
Arabic
Both pretty much meaning
Go! Or move or let’s go
All the derivatives of
Go/move you can think of
Please tell me you guys are watching the second one too! One of my favorite parts is where they are yelling at each other across the river. Hilarious!! 😂
