Brendan was a young star of the 90s, coming up with the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Good comedic work in Airheads, Blast from the Past and Encino Man. Even an early dramatic role in School Ties.
So I used to feel like the second one was as weak as Smokey and the Bandit 2. I rewatched it recently and I no longer feel that way. I think I just had unrealistic expectations because I held this movie in such high regard
The main problem with the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was the recasting of Evy. Maria Bello wasn't the same as Rachel Weisz. There are other problems as well, such as some of the writing, effects, some acting, and other things that could've gone better, but not having Rachel was the big one.
The chemistry between Rachel and Brandon is awesome and the third one just didn’t h have that. Also Emotep is another great person in this. If this is a 10/10 I would put mummy returns at 8 or 9/10 as I love it almost as much as this. Then the third well as you said not so much
The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evy described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): They used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. Also, regarding the debate of camels VS horses: Horses are faster, but camels have higher levels of stamina and are adapted for life in the desert. Even though they DO eventually need to eat and drink, they can survive for 15 days without water and can use the fat in their humps to nourish themselves, they also have long eyelashes to keeps sand and dust out of their eyes and their feet are big and wide to evenly distribute their bodyweight (A dromedary, or one-humped camel weighs between 880-1,320 pounds, while a Bactrian, or two-humped camel weighs between 990-1,100 pounds) so they don't sink in the sand.
It's crazy that the riverboat scene is a sound stage and the "night" scene when they're on the camels and the Medjai are watching him is actually broad daylight, just darkened in post.
Jerry Goldsmith created such a fantastic score (orchestrated music) for this film. Music is so often swept under the rug, but it can make a huge impact on the film.
I'm so glad you guys watched this! I haven't even seen the full reaction yet 😄 I just couldn't resist typing that now. This is one of my favorite films. The cast is amazing, the story is classic, and the music WOW the music speaks to my soul ❤
Classic, One of the best movies ever. This is one of those movies who stands its own over time, like Aliens and Predator. It was made so well, that you really don't notice how long ago it was made. One of the few movies I actually remember going to see in the theaters, everyone was cheering. So much fun!
I think The Mummy Returns is pretty good and worth watching. Also if you want a Romantic comedy with Brendan Fraser, I think you will enjoy A Blast from the Past.
The sleazy little Benny guy was in Peggy Sue Got Married. He played the rebel, Fonzieish, cool high-school guy that wanted to quit school and go live with Peggy Sue and another girl on a chicken farm. Quite the range!
Kevin J O`Conner the guy who played Benny was in the Mummy director Stephen Sommers previous film Deep Rising he also played the evil Igor in Sommers later film Van Helsing , he was very good in both films.....
This was an awesome part of my childhood along with the other 90s kids and I'm glad you watched this. My work manager loves this movie so much she made a name tag for me with this quote at the bottom, "I have all the horses!"
Comeback king Brendan Fraser was the cool swashbuckling adventurer most of us grew up with, his chemistry with Rachel Weisz is off the charts and this is a perfect companion piece to Indiana Jones. Do watch the sequel The Mummy Returns as it's even better and has more Rick and Evie again. Other Brendan movies to check out are Blast from the Past with Alicia Silverstone (you both will LOVE that one), School Ties, With Honors, Gods and Monsters, Bedazzled and of course The Whale which he just won his Oscar for. It's an emotional watch so have tissues prepared for that one. Watched him a lot growing up and I'm very happy to see his well deserved resurgence.
Yes and he has a name. He is Jonathan Hyde. Not only has he been in the Richie Rich movie (where he steals the show, though not intentionally), he's also played a double role in Jumanji (1996), Anaconda, Titanic, Trollhunters (animated series, voice role), Being Human (another movie he was in with Robin Williams) and The Strain (TV series), among many many others. For more information, see the Internet Movie Database. And by the way, she is from Australia, but currently lives in the UK and is married to opera singer Isobel Buchanan. And still makes films and is in plays. Plus another of his daughters, Georgia, is also acting. And yes I'm a fan of him, so I know something. Though I have never met him. It would be an absolute honour to meet him live. Although, for me, it would be enough to see a play with him in it. Because I'm shy and get nervous easily, I'd hardly dare say a word to him.
Brendan Fraser is a Canadian. He got into trouble with Canada when he played Dudley Do Right in the movie of that name. They said it made fun of the Mounties.
So glad y'all loved this! I saw it in theaters when I was 12 and had a crush on both Rick and Ardeth Bey 😂. It's definitely worth checking out The Mummy Returns for more of both, plus the same flavor of adventure and comedy with light spooks! Evie gets even more to do in the sequel, and I love when films keep romances just as spicy and fun when (spoilers) the characters have been married for years.
If you like Brendan Fraiser in this, you should both watch Blast from the Past. I know people have mislead you in the past about what was or was not a romantic comedy, but that one isn't stretching the definition at all. It's shocking they managed to create a functional plot in a movie filled with basically good people (with no exceptions outside of extremely minor characters).
Re the scene in the beginning, where Imhotep is being wrapped up in mummy bandages and put into the sarcophagus.... I have the DVD that has a commentary track by Arnold Vosloo ("Imhotep") and the actors who play Beni and Ardeth Bey (Kevin J O'Connor and Oded Fehr). Arnold Vosloo is talking about that scene: "This was scary, man. This is where they entomb me, and.... Bondage is not my thing, I know that for sure after having shot this scene, because they completely wrap me up from head to toe, and I couldn't move for about four hours. "This scene here, they had me stand up and then they wrap me up, and they put me in the coffin. And some people like being tied up, but I can assure you, it's not my thing." [the others chuckle]
classic adventuring party. the smart but cloistered wizard, the unlucky but funny thief and the strong but socially awkward fighter. The token ranger in the end too haha
Not a horror film, but a fun fantasy adventure film! Director Stephen Sommers said in an interview that this movie is "INDIANA JONES meets Jason And The Argonauts as the monster or villain gives our heroes a hard time." In the early 90's a lot of horror film Directors were considered for making a new MUMMY , from Wes Craven, John Carpenter, John Landis, Clive Barker, Mick Garris, David Cronenberg, Sam Raimi and George Romero. Stephen Sommers, a fan of the original, was hired after his last film, DEEP RISING, bombed at the box office. Before Brendan Fraser was picked to play Rick O'Connell, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, and Ben Were considered. Cruise would later star in the 2017 reboot, which was not well received by critics or fans. The Mummy 1999 made $420 million dollars against a $75-80 million dollar budget.
Stephen Dunham was also offered to play Rick, but was later given the role of Isaac Henderson (one of the treasure hunters who Imhotep kills). But geez, do I wish Kurt Russell took the role, I can totally buy into him saying Rick's dialogue....
And also, Universal made their Mummy franchise into adventure films in the 1940s starting with the Mummy’s Hand, so they have every right to “copy” Indiana Jones since Jones sort of copied them
My understanding is that it was first conceived as a horror monster movie (as seen with other classic monsters like Frankenstein and Dracula), but it didn't get very far. It wasn't until they changed the concept (and script) to a more Indiana-Jones-style action-adventure film that it gained any traction.
This was so much fun, I can't tell you how happy I was watching you two react to The Mummy, one of my all time favorite movies since childhood lol! I'm even more happy that you two wore the matching tshirts I got you! So glad you both loved this movie🥹 Yes, please watch the second one The Mummy Returns, it's just as fun as this one, it's by far not better, but still a fun flick to watch! I also plan on getting matching tshirts for you and Carly for when you react to the second one lol! Like I said, this movie was what made me study Egyptology, that's why I know so much that I told you in the chat room lol! I wasn't kidding when I told you that the reason why I'm called moviefanatic is, not only because of my knowledge of movies and actors, but because I have the ability to memorize my favorite movies word for word from beginning to end, and The Mummy and The Mummy Returns are definitely one of those lol! Plus I wasn't kidding that I memorized all three LOTR movies, extended cuts😁lol! Anyway, I was glad to participate in this premiere despite being at work, I wasn't going to miss this for the world lol! Can't wait for eventually The Mummy Returns, plus it was that movie that launched the acting career of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, no joke! Hope you have a good rest of your day, love and support, you and Carly are the best! God bless you, Carly and your family! And as always [snaps fingers & winks] stay classy Cassie 🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹
Really glad you watched this one. They don’t make fun summer blockbusters like this anymore. The Mummy Returns is still quite good and worth a watch. I also really think you would like the movie Stardust, it ticks all the boxes you like 😊
Hollywood nowadays can't handle this type of man, a macho, strong, yet actually flawed and good guy. I'll go to sleep for 50 years and turn in again to see if it's been cured. Brendan Fraser is awesome.
A gr8 film; ag r8 reaction! My late wife was employed @ a CPA firm for a time and Brendan Fraser happened to be one of the clients there. Debbie met him on several occasions when he'd pop into the office (she noted that he was a very friendly and personable individual), and she even secured his autograph (this being about the period when "The Mummy" premiered), so therefore, for me, is now a special possession inherited from her in remembrance. She and I have enjoyed his performances going all they way back to the days of "Encino Man and "George of the Jungle". His Oscar was well earned.
Mythology fact: the cat goddess Baset was one of Ra's bodyguards during his nightly cruises through the underworld, fighting off demons to protect the sun god.
The one-liners in this movie were just awesome... "Looks to me you're on the wrong side of the river..." I considered this more of a comedy-horror than a true horror movie.
Every time you reference from where you know an actor it is like you suddenly start speaking a different language, you have a completely different frame of reference for actors.
I have no idea where to suggest movies as I'm new to your channel, but here are three recommendations from me: - What's Eating Gilbert Grape - The Mask - Space Jam Love your reactions!
The Mummy is an absolute timeless masterpiece. It's without a doubt in my top 3 favourites I could watch anytime, anyday, anywhere, rain or shine, and that's across ALL genres. The narrative, characters, visuals, fighting, humour, it has everything nailed! Over those 24 years, it still holds up brilliantly, and my childhood fondness hasn't diminshed in the slightest. Thank you both very much for your reactions!
Interesting/weird/gross fact: The reason there aren't many mummies in museums is because the English would grind them up and mix them in with food. They also made paint with ground up mummies. The shade was called "mummie brown."
The Mummy and the sequel (I don't personally vibe with the third one) are movies that I can watch on repeat all day everyday. It was my introduction to horror when I was a child and my family quote them and re-watch them often, they're the perfect blend of horror, adventure, action, and comedy. Imhotep's story is all about doing terrible things for love, and it's great to have a sense of pity for a villain instead of pure hatred (Arnold Vosloo is underrated, his face when he fails to resurrect his love and when she is killed again in the end just destroys me). To me, Brendan Frasier is the ultimate leading man, and I'm so happy he's able to come back to the spotlight after all the hardship he went through. Really enjoyed your reaction, I hope you watch the sequel as well!
Regarding Rachel Weisz I highly recommend The Constant Gardener. A complex, , important and passionate movie with a great Weisz and a perfect Ralph Fiennes. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
This movie is just one of the best! I can't tell you how many times over the years that I've happened to have watched it when it's been on Tv! And it tends to be on often lol. Not that I watch it every time. Anyways though, the original Mummy movie from back in the 30ties was for it's time scary but when they revived it in this form, with a great story and action to go along with it, it's awesome! That's why so many people just love it! The graphics in the intro showing Cairo as it may have been ages ago, just stuns me every time. The detail of the body paint on Anuck su-Amun is a work of art. The detail of everything in the movie was cool and wonderful. I've loved Egyptology since I was 10 (I'm 61 now) and was giddy watching it for the first time when it came out. All the actors were perfect in their roles. I adored BF and RW together. (Fun fact- Rachael is Daniel Craig's wife. Though not way back when she was in this movie.) Oded Fehr also was just awesome casting. Y'all have to watch the 2nd one, but stay away from the 3rd. Uuggh! Was fun watching with y'all!😊
Mummies are way more powerful than zombies in the tropes. Zombie=based on a voodoo witchdoctor who used neurotoxins to make slaves, Mummies=Based on the idea that the ancient egyptians knew magic
10:35 This is _exactly_ the reason I would be bored out of my mind if I ever visited Las Vegas-- outside the weekend they had an auto race or maybe a sci-fi convention.
Such an awesome choice! Brenda Frasier was and is such a Chad. Y’all might like the second and third movie two (though they do recast Rachel Weiss character in the third sadly. These movies have some scary gore but are mostly action and romance so….great choice
6:00 So, many people get confused about the curse making him invincible. The point of the curse is that you're eaten alive and unable to truely die while locked in a sarcophagus for eternity, that's why it's a curse, and since he's locked away for ever his invincibility isn't supposed to be much of a problem.
Fun watch! Lol I love how they never explained in the movie that the curse WAS immortality, like he was conscious as that juicy mummy, stuck in that tomb for thousands of year unable to die...with those flesh earing beetles...man that must of been hell
I remember when this came out on VHS we borrowed it off our auntie and sat down as a family to watch it and were so hyped we stayed up late to watch it again, lightning in a bottle is the only way to describe this film.
Brendan Fraser is just great! One of my favorite franchises, they nailed every trope and cliche without unintentionally overdoing them. Welcome to the wrong side of the river.

Also, regarding the debate of camels VS horses:
Horses are faster, but camels have higher levels of stamina and are adapted for life in the desert.
Goldsmith was a true music master.
It's crazy how little the score for this movie is talked about, it's amazing.
I'm so glad you guys watched this! I haven't even seen the full reaction yet 😄 I just couldn't resist typing that now. This is one of my favorite films. The cast is amazing, the story is classic, and the music WOW the music speaks to my soul ❤
Curious if it had a really high budget. It's kind of got an old-school epic feel...but hard to tell.
the Great Jerry Goldsmith...no wonder!
This film was my favorite as a kid. Perfect popcorn movie to watch with family and friends!
Brilliant move, one of my favorites. It's a modern classic of action-adventure. Rachel and Brendan were absolutely beautiful. Loved your reaction!
Def A Blast From The Past! Would be very enjoyable for these two. 60’s innocence coupled with a 90’s coming of age.
Absolutely, what an adorable movie!
Blast from the past is excel l ent
I love how quick Cassie and Carlie are to smell romance! It makes my soul happy! Lol
John Hannah (who played Jonathan) is in “4 Weddings and a Funeral” and “Sliding Doors”.
Ahh this movie 😍😍 Brendan Fraser is amazing in this, and the actor who plays Benny he's hilarious. Brilliant film.
The sleazy little Benny guy was in Peggy Sue Got Married. He played the rebel, Fonzieish, cool high-school guy that wanted to quit school and go live with Peggy Sue and another girl on a chicken farm. Quite the range!
Yes! Benny is an amazing! Very funny and lovable even though he is a complete slime ball. :D
But is she on the right side of the river?! 😄
@@Johnny_Socko last I checked...nope! Lol
I can't stop hearing Johnathan as Jarnathan 😂
LMAO "So they DO have to go back to Hamanamanamnah."
Definitely think they'd enjoy Blast From the Past. Gods and Monsters...maybe not so much.
Rachel Weisz as a librarian made too much feeling lose for me as a young teen, lol.
I know a lot of librarians who love to quote her drunken speech! They actually are very passionate people for the most part!
@@ridney5887Going back that speech after having watched and loved the show The Librarians makes it all the better.
Definitely some sex appeal in this one.
Perfect amount of scary, funny, action, and romance for them! The Mummy Returns is a must, and many consider it on par with the first.
Imhotep was a real guy. He was an architect. Several people died after opening his tomb
Mummy is like one of my all time favorite movies. I honestly like all three movies, but the first one is a classic.
"The Mummy" is a cross between those 1950s B hollywood horror flicks and the british Hammer films.
An absolute classic of its kind.
A brilliant old-timey adventure movie with an amazing cast; love this movie! And the second one is definitely well worth a watch.
Love how the mummy takes the eyes of the one guy that’s almost blind without glasses 😂
One of my favourites of all time. Glad you guys got to experience it as well.
"where are they taking him"
"To be hanged apparently he had a VERY good time"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 always killed me.
Arnold Vosloo is talking about that scene:
"This was scary, man.
I absolutely adored this movie when I was a kid, and it remains in my favorites today
classic adventuring party. the smart but cloistered wizard, the unlucky but funny thief and the strong but socially awkward fighter. The token ranger in the end too haha
Adore this movie and it’s sequel
Film fact: Bruce Campell was considered for Rick O Connell. Campell is best known for playing in action horror flicks such as The Evil Dead franchise.
Not a horror film, but a fun fantasy adventure film!
Director Stephen Sommers said in an interview that this movie is "INDIANA JONES meets Jason And The Argonauts as the monster or villain gives our heroes a hard time."
In the early 90's a lot of horror film Directors were considered for making a new MUMMY , from Wes Craven, John Carpenter, John Landis, Clive Barker, Mick Garris, David Cronenberg, Sam Raimi and George Romero.
Stephen Sommers, a fan of the original, was hired after his last film, DEEP RISING, bombed at the box office.
Before Brendan Fraser was picked to play Rick O'Connell,
Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, and Ben Were considered.
The librarian also played a character in Stargate film and series, as a similar character. Other actor in the beginning was also in Indy Jones film.
Winston the pilot was the last remaining cast member of the Tv show Bewitched. He played Dr Bombay
You have to watch the second one! I like it better than the first! I love seeing more of evies backstory and she’s a badass
Oded Fehr, Arnold Vosloo, Erick Avari, John Hannah, Omid Djalili, ... so many great support cast in this one.
and Omid Djalili does a great stand up set about "Foreign Accent Syndrome".
22:34 I know exactly what Mr. Burns is going through. That's about my eyesight when I'm not wearing glasses. They really visualized that well!
Brendan Fraser is the GOAT. Big recommend for Blast from the Past and Bedazzled and on the more dramatic side With Honors.
Finally you watch mummy yay whatch the mummy returns it also good
"Mummies seem brittle.... like, you'd have an easy time with them."
Kan-Ra would want a word.
Really glad you watched this one. They don’t make fun summer blockbusters like this anymore. The Mummy Returns is still quite good and worth a watch. I also really think you would like the movie Stardust, it ticks all the boxes you like 😊
Cool factoid the Brit is played by the same guy that played Dr. Bombay in Bewitched as their Family Witch Doctor
This is actually a perfect Carly movie, because they always imply violence but cut away without showing anything gruesome.
Hollywood nowadays can't handle this type of man, a macho, strong, yet actually flawed and good guy. I'll go to sleep for 50 years and turn in again to see if it's been cured.
Brendan Fraser is awesome.
I always love these kind of action adventure movies. Indiana, Pirates, Tomb Raider, the old Sinbad films, Clash of the Titans!
One of my favourite movies of all time I've been watching it since I can remember it's a underrated classic
THE Mummy Movie is a throw back to the black and white horror days in the 1920s movies. The modern tech just makes the movie better.
The one-liners in this movie were just awesome... "Looks to me you're on the wrong side of the river..."
I considered this more of a comedy-horror than a true horror movie.
To me, it’s more of an adventure movie with horror elements that pays homage to the original 1932 movie.
Every time you reference from where you know an actor it is like you suddenly start speaking a different language, you have a completely different frame of reference for actors.
Brendan Fraser was a childhood crush, I used to watch this movie 20 times in a row because he was my favorite character. Such a hottie
I have no idea where to suggest movies as I'm new to your channel, but here are three recommendations from me:
- What's Eating Gilbert Grape
- The Mask
- Space Jam
Love your reactions!
If y’all wanna see that fairy tale continue, then watch The Mummy Returns 🥰. You can skip the third.
Interesting/weird/gross fact:
The reason there aren't many mummies in museums is because the English would grind them up and mix them in with food.
1999 was a great year for movies. The Mummy, The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, Fight Club, The Spy Who Shagged Me, just to name a few.
When you realize her old boss was right in burning the map and was legitimately looking out for her and mankind
There is a sequel, called The Mummy Returns! It plays partly in London
The Mummy returns is also fantastic
Carlys favourite words are "That was unnecessary '😂
One of my favorite. Love your channel.
Love this film
Fun Intro! Love that you recognized Cadbury the Butler.
Brenden is actually American born and raised in Indiana.. his parents were Canadian
Cant wait, this is so much fun that Carly will enjoy this socalled horror movie. The sequel The Mummy Returns is even better!!
1:05 the sister didn’t seem to care after that😂
You should also watch the original Mummy 1932 with Boris Karloff, very atmospheric !
Another funny thing is that the scarabs depicted are really just dung beatles irl
Brendan Fraser is just great!
One of my favorite franchises, they nailed every trope and cliche without unintentionally overdoing them.
Welcome to the wrong side of the river.
