31:53 This right here is the reason the movie is called "I am Legend". It's not about Will Smith's legend, it's that he IS the legend. He became the monster that comes into their homes while they sleep and kidnap their family members for them never to return. He's the boogyman to these creatures. He's the thing that they tell their kids about. He's the legend.
Yeah, but even the alternate ending fails to explain this enough. So I think Jen didn't get that, because it wasn't made explicit enough. I personally only understood that *after* reading the book, and if you have to read the book to understand the ending...it's not a good ending. Which isn't to say that they shouldn't have had an ending revealing this twist; rather, they should have done it *better* than that.
@@ArgusStrav yep I agree. That is why I think the film went with the cheap easy ending. They knew they did not pull it off so they relegated it to a deleted scene.
The books ending had the implications that the vampire things had a social structure and Robert was a creature from the past hunting them and killing them in their sleep. He was the monster to them.
I wonder how much Jen would cry if she watched A Dog's Purpose. If I recall, Holden doesn't care for those types of Dog movies, but I bet Jen would cry.
If you saw the alternate cut first, you would've known that there were also small scenes added after robert meets anna and ethan. It shows in those scenes that instead of the blood being the cure, it's a process to reverse the virus. If I remember in the alternate cut, if you try to cure the virus, it will work, but unfortunately, the infected persons' body temperature sky rockets, which kills them in the process. So he actually was doing a process using I believe ice and other methods to bring the body temperature down so the cure can kill the virus while not killing the host. The theatrical cut was just cut up to look like it's her blood just to kill him and safely preserve the cure for the narrative sake. I prefer the alternate cut because that felt more like a more interesting process, and it felt interesting that it fits the title "I am legend." In that, he was legend to the infected as he was the boogeyman kidnapping them and killing them through experiments.
@@jonahforrest2193 I agree, it is. Another good one is Collateral Beauty, I'd love to see Jen & Holden check out Seven Pounds & Collateral Beauty one day. I think they'd like them quite a bit. This just made my crappy day at least 83% better, thanks edit: Jen don't worry about it, I'm a grown ass 27 year old dude and I still cry like a baby at that scene
For your consideration: the first time I watched this film I didn’t notice the lack of score until there actually was score playing. What a beautiful score it was and what a great way to really show to the audience how lonely Neville is throughout the story.
I heard an interview with the director around the time this movie came out. He specifically wanted as little music as possible for the first half of the movie. The quiet created this very uneasy tension that kept building and building, all the way to Sam's death. And once she does die, there's still very little music, which makes Neville so much more alone than he already was. It's extremely effective.
This movie is quite different from the book but I enjoy both stories. Anytime an animal is hurt or dies in a film, I like to look up real things about the animal like their name and other films they were in. It helps to see them more as an actor and less of a plot line.
I think it also borrows heavily from Omega Man? There is a lot of similarities. Was Omega Man also based on I Am Legend? I guess I never looked it up or found out?
@CrazeeAdam that sounds right. I read the book for a college class and that rings some bells. I think Omega Man used the book as inspiration and this film followed closely.
Will Smith has the record for the most consecutive $100 million+ hits at the U.S. box office. of eight, consisting of Men in Black 2, Bad Boys II, I, Robot, Shark Tale, Hitch, The Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend and Hancock. A crazy record if you really think about it.
I love they cast a mime to play the mannequin fred, and he's slightly turns in the frame to make the audience feel uneasy and unsure that it was or wasn't moving.
@7:36 LOL same. also i've only ever seen this movie once but will's performance is top tier. the dog stuff broke my heart and I'm sorry you had to endure this one jen but glad you got meet sam, she's a good girl.
In the Novel it's called (I Am Legend) because the Will Smith Character is experimenting on the Zombies to create a cure. So the Zombies tell each other to watch out for him. He becomes their version of the Boogie Man.
After however many years this movie has been out, I’ve watched it multiple times and I ALWAYS cry as a 24 year old. It is such a depressing thing and I’ve gone through 2 dog deaths in my life and it sucks so I connect and understand. In my opinion it’s worse than a divorce
Will Smith grew so enamored of his canine co-star, Abbey, that he tried to adopt her when filming was finished, but the dog's trainer could not be persuaded to give her up.
I am Legend is one of my favorite Will Smith movies apart from 7 pounds and pursuit of happiness. The alternate ending is a great touch which leads me to yall should definitely watch the butterfly effect as to its story and great multiple endings
My first time watching this was when i was 12 recovering from surgery in a hospital ward, with a guy who 16 and was also recovering from surgery and his mum. When the Sam moment happened, his mum told me in graphic detail about how they saw a dog get plowed over by a bus on the way to the hospital. Traumatic for me at 12 xD
That was a horrible thing to tell a kid, especially in the hospital. Maybe she was focusing on worrying about her son & not thinking... or just a rude adult?!
I know it’s probably not the month or movie to suggest this but if you BOTH want a good cry….The Wild Robot will be sure to give you one but I highly recommend it as it is probably the best animated movie of the year IMO
I also prefer the alternate ending, the creatures clearly have intelligence and purpose and it makes more sense in terms of character development for Will and the larger theme of humans playing gods. in the end, he is doing the same the researches who "cured" cancer did.
Holden, I think it's still crazy that in the theatrical ending, Neville sacrifices himself to save Anna & Ethan & blows himself up with a grenade, but now, technically, they are retconning the ending THEY (the producers) CHOSE to roll with & now they say that the alternate ending where he survives & goes with them to the survivors colony is the ACTUAL ending now & is now cannon to the (eventual) "franchise", just bc of the simple fact that Will Smith is returning to the role next year in 'I Am Legend 2' (I guess they never expected him to tho, bc other than 'Bad Boys' & 'Men in Black,' those are the only sequels he has ever done, loosening up in recent years w/ BBoys [He turned down sequels for 'Independence Day', 'Hancock' & 'IAL2' initially]. Holden I’m glad u showing her this. That dog scene is a good one because not only did he raise the dog and only companion but that was the last thing his daughter gave him
Yeah I'm with you on that Holden I prefer the alternate ending more than the original one cause it sort is similar to the novel in a way. But it goes back to what he said earlier on the movie that "any trace of humanity within them is gone" but that shows him that deep down there's humanity left in them and that it their eyes he's the monster.
The rifle that he uses in the movie was auctioned off this past June and sold for around $15,000 it is an actual Colt rifle that was modified to fire full auto and could fire blank rounds after the movie It was reverted back to its original state of semi auto.
Seven pounds is the best Will Smith movie I've ever seen, so good I've never actually watched it a second time because of the memories and heartbreak from watching it the only time.
This movie isn't bad, but so far no adaption has ever stood up to the book. The original short story of I Am Legend is something that Stephen King references as one of the best horror stories of all time. It is much different than this and the title of I Am Legend means so much more in the context of the events of the book than it does in this movie. I would highly recommend people read the short story Book spoilers: at the end of the book, he realizes that the woman is actually one of them and that they are evolving into a new species with their own hierarchy. They put him on trial for genocide and sentencing to death. Before he dies he announces that he is the last human of the old species, he is Legend
Before execution, he realizes, that there is no place for him in this new world, and takes the poison that Ruth gave him. And so he will become the stuff of legend for this new species, just like vampires were for ours. The terror, that hunts you in your most vulnerable state - when you are asleep. The monster, that lurkes in the sunlight.
I'm with Jen on this movie. Very few times do I ever cry during a film but this one gets me in the feel every time watching. It maybe even worst knowing after on a rewatch because you pay more attention to Samantha during the movie. Also, it was years before I knew this. There are hidden signs of the Butterfly throughout the movie as a message from his Daughter/God guiding him. This has to be one of my favorite Will Smith movies of all time from how well he acted.
HOLDEN! When you talked about why the dogs weren't around and said that you guys recarpeted the floor, I thought worst 😂. Thought you did them in and made them yall's new carpet
*Sam or Samantha the Dog was at the Movies premiere.* Abby and Kona played Sam. Abby was on screen the most. Wil tried to buy the dog but the trainer refused. After paying Wills salary. They didn't have much money leftover for CGI. Behind the scenes shows Will going in to the Video store and the New York City traffic right behind him. Thty did close off alot of Ciry streets for filling during the weekend. There was very little CIT Blue screen of the city. It was actually distressed with trees cars and shrubs.
Holden saying so much about that animal scene and Jen's emotions makes me really want a reaction to the biographical movie about a female US marine K9 handler and a dog, "Megan Leavey" is the title, please put it somewhere on your list. It will make you love (your) dogs even more! Beautiful movie. That said, great to have your reaction to I am Legend, very cool movie and totally not dark at all. 😁I still can't decide if I like the alternate ending more than the original one. But both are nice.
I agree with Jen. The other ending doesn’t make any sense that they wouldn’t kill him after he puts the woman down. I thought he was going to scoot the cart out while staying in the glass enclosure.
@ agreed & I don’t like that. I’m old school in that they’re zombies and are supposed to be mindless. I didn’t like changing it. I like the movie overall and have seen it several times. Never heard anyone posit that they’re vampires.
Jen did alright in the dog scene! I saw another reactor who’s a dog lover get up from the couch and leave because he couldn’t handle it! Also, don’t forget the daughter making a butterfly 🦋 when saying goodbye to her dad?
Ryan Renolds in Buried is amazing, he should have been nominated for an Oscar for carrying that movie so well. Just being trapped in a coffin for hour and half
Most of the exterior New York City street scenes were shot practically on location with little or no green-screen. They shut down big chunks of Manhattan mid-day, mid-week for weeks, it was a massive inconvenience to the city. Most of the footage that they shot they didn't even use; there are entire scenes shot in abandoned major high traffic locations that were left on the cutting room floor. They also did screen tests for the infected being played by actors with full makeup but when the director saw them he was unimpressed and made the call the make them all CGI.
the "alternate" ending is actually the canon, because is the one from the book and I Legend 2 is coming so he needs to be alive.

He was also physically far more frightening in the books.
From what I recall, in the books he was nearly 2 meters tall with long hair and beard.
4:45 ya'll gotta watch Walking Dead next
Holden with the sinister “everytiings gonna be okay” 😂😂
YALL WOULD CRY WATCHING HATCHI BROO
I always preferred the alternate ending
I'm with Jen on this movie. Very few times do I ever cry during a film but this one gets me in the feel every time watching. It maybe even worst knowing after on a rewatch because you pay more attention to Samantha during the movie.
Also, it was years before I knew this. There are hidden signs of the Butterfly throughout the movie as a message from his Daughter/God guiding him. This has to be one of my favorite Will Smith movies of all time from how well he acted.
I always wondered if she's seen this movie. Because of THAT scene
HOLDEN! When you talked about why the dogs weren't around and said that you guys recarpeted the floor, I thought worst 😂. Thought you did them in and made them yall's new carpet
7lbs and Pursuit are ROUGH movies, very hard to get through without just bawling your face off, agreed.
My goodness, I'm watching this in my office and i had to pause at 19:46 so i don't start sobbing in public😭 I'm built just like Jen
23:05 Jen: “because killing the dog was not enough”
Also Jen: “oh hey shrek”
😂😂
Jen, nothing is wrong with feeling that way about animals. I’m the same way! I think a lot of people feel that way.
*Sam or Samantha the Dog was at the Movies premiere.*
Abby and Kona played Sam.
I was giggling so bad when she asked,"That's not the dog?"
I like how they played the same song in the start as in Sharktale😂😂 both MC's played by Will Smith
Thanks for watching both versions.
I agree with Jen. The other ending doesn’t make any sense that they wouldn’t kill him after he puts the woman down. I thought he was going to scoot the cart out while staying in the glass enclosure.
I think its meant to imply they're more sentient vs mindless creatures
@ agreed & I don’t like that. I’m old school in that they’re zombies and are supposed to be mindless. I didn’t like changing it. I like the movie overall and have seen it several times. Never heard anyone posit that they’re vampires.
21:06 i thought she was gonna say "MYSELF!" 😂
I saw "Legend" in the thumbnail and immediately thought, "Legend of Korra" then I took a second and actually read the title.
Jen did alright in the dog scene! I saw another reactor who’s a dog lover get up from the couch and leave because he couldn’t handle it!
Also, don’t forget the daughter making a butterfly 🦋 when saying goodbye to her dad?
Bro I’ve been wanting them to watch this for ages, (manly for Jen and the Dog scene) never thought they would
"Because killing the dog was not enough.... Oh hey Shrek!!" Might be my favorite quote from this channel so far
