Excellent tutorial...it's as if you had been the flying the airplane for years!
4:19 It's a problem with Captain Sim's modeling but when you turn on (or off) the autopilot switch, the engage bar does not move. The engage bar is spring loaded down and is used to engage the 3 autopilot servos. If you ever had an out of trim situation with the autopilot you would disengage the out of trim servo, retrim and then re-engage the servo. Going into Hickam one day we lost the elevator servo...no parts to fix it and we had to be in Australia on a set schedule so for the next 8 days we hand flew the elevator but at least we could engage the rudder and aileron servos.
The Flight Director does control the autopilot when the AP is engaged. If it's not engaged, the pilot would manually fly the plane in response to the FD commands.
The Herc is a quick learn for flap settings. Flaps 50 for Take Off. In the pattern or on vectors, Flaps 50 below 180 KIAS and then Flaps 100 below 145 KIAS for landing.

I love the C-130. I always wanted to fly in one and finally got to while in the Army in Bosnia back in 2000. I injured my C-spine and got to take two trips back and forth to Landstuhl Regency Medical Center in Germany and back aboard a C-130 for a total of 4 flights (They were already scheduled cargo flights; the Army did not have to pay just to fly me back and forth lol). It was a joy. My goodness, I just had a thought, I can get the C-130 and recreate the flights in MSFS 2020, and I can use the tips in this video. I have a new goal. Thank you, Jonathon.

The plane can be flown with the heading bug as well, select flt director switch to manual, then select heading on flt director input switch. Adjust heading bug to current heading, engage autopilot and now fly by using the heading bug on the HSI! Also, the big ailerons control knob can be re-centered by right clicking mouse button while the cursor is on the knob. Hope that helps someone!

John, thought you might wish to know, but Capt Sim just recently updated the C-130, now it can switch to NAV mode and follow GPS

Of course, this is older, but I flew 70s era autopilots when I was in the Army on Blackhawks. We didn't have an autopilot, but we had an Automatic Flight Control System, and it was set to get you on a 45 degree intercept (so, heading +/- 45 degrees off course) and then once it captured the VOR/TAC (less than full scale deflection), it would shallow out the turn to intercept. So, if the ability to capture outside VOR full deflection is unrealistic...it's only unrealistic by about 10-20 years of technology. Not bad considering Cpt Sim's previous MSFS garbage. Great video, showing all the functions. I think I'll pick it up.

As always Jonathan, outstanding video in explanation and content. Glad to see that Im not the only pilot that gets overwhelmed in the cockpit. Well done

I'd just like to say a massive thanks for this video and your instructions to all explanation on this and the autopilot adjustments. Brilliant video and easy to follow too. Mabe you should do a good quick start up video too on it. Can I ask do yiu know of a nav map that will work with xbox as I'm missing that side of it and that would help a lot too. Thanks so much again.

I bought this plane a couple years ago, or so. Back when it first became available, (without cockpit). I never planned or tried to fly it. I just bought it be hanger queens at airports. It was great for that. I loved seeing a few sitting on the tarmacs in USCG livery when flying into KPIE. It looked so good sitting around most any airports.
I wonder if one can buy just a cockpit add on? I don't know the price of the new release, but I'm hoping those of us that did buy it in the beginning can buy a cockpit update for the model we already have.

Well done video. I have one small correction. The flight director is not telling the autopilot what to do.There is no connection between the flight director and the autopilot if I remember correctly. The flight director is telling the pilot what to do if the pilot is flying the airplane, In heading mode, the steering bar gives guidance to the selected heading. In VOR mode, it gives guidance to the selected course, and in ILS mode the horizontal bar gives pitch guidance to maintain the glide slope, The same flight director was found on aircraft with no autopilot (such as the T-38) and it works exactly the same as on the Hercules. In the sim, the same arrangement is found on the Fokker F-28. I always thought that the flight director just cluttered up the instrument and was pretty much worthless and left it turned off. Hope this helps. I appreciate your effort in coming to grips with this add-on. You've convinced me to buy it.

That's really interesting - in the more modern commercial jets it's the opposite (as far as I've read) - the fms works out what to do, then the flight director illustrates what the autopilot is being instructed.

      @TWOKDOK1 9 місяців тому +1

@@jonbeckettThese are not mutually exclusive, the FMS instructs the AP what to do and the FD reflects what the AP is being told when engaged, and usefully, when the AP is not engaged, it tells the (manual) pilot what they should do to accord with the FMS.

Thank you for your excellent C130-Videos, Jonathan! It helped me very much starting the plane from "Cold&Dark" and to navigate it with radios and autopilot. It works fine and, in my opinion, is more challenging and fun than all the modern fully computerized airliners.
Of course the CaptainSim-Herc is very expensive, but i like the bird in real live and so i bought it. And flying it in MSFS is much fun!
Hopefully any updates will implement more functionality, i.e. Autopilot with VOR/IFF2, TACAN and ADF. Ramp-opening inflight will be fine 😉. And a variant C130-J would offer a little more modern variant (CptSim C130 for FSX has it).

Great video Jonathon, everything very clearly explained. The term I use to describe 'getting behind the aeroplane' is ' running out of neurological bandwith'( aka 'running out of talent' in Motorsport).

Does the autopilot have the ability to follow a flight plan via GPS? Not through "traditional" means, but via other apps like Mobile Companion... I've seen some models that theoretically wouldn't have this capability but it would be possible to mimic... Does anyone know if the C-130 would have something like this?

    • @jonbeckett

I don't think so - because this version of the Hercules couldn't.

So, basicaly, just like DC-6. Unfortunately you didn't show where you tune Nav frequencies! I can find only com😢
EDIT Found it! Cant't believe you didn't find it importtant enough to reveal its location considering how well hidden it is!?!?!?!
