Definitive guide to starting the ATR 42/72-600 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator

  • Following guidance finally being released on the official Microsoft Flight Simulator UA-cam channel, we work through the real procedure that real pilots follow when preparing the aircraft for flight. In concert with this I have corrected the written checklist I put together on launch day - which we can now use going forward with some confidence.
    Here's where you can find the checklist:
    ko-fi.com/jonb...
    Note that I miss out ALL of the checks that real pilots perform to ensure systems are operating correctly. This is both to save time, and in realisation that we are in a simulator where the aircraft is pretty much perfect each time we sit in it. I also don't use the built-in checklist in the EWD screen - I'll save that for another video :)

    Thanks for the vids and checklists. Ive been using both to create my own single page checklist for each plane. Just walk through each video, along with checklist you have put together, and then condense it down for my own use, using some abbreviations that
    later helps with location identification for switches etc. U = upper panel / C2 = column 2 / CL = center left….as an example. That takes me right to the button or switch needed, and at that point I am able to continue the flow from having previously “studied” the aircraft, which usually consists of about 3-4 weeks of non stop flying it, along with videos, checklists etc. After several week I am fairly comfortable with it and can move on to another aircraft to add to the mix

Then @15:37 when you want to start Eng 1, you thinking (I guess) the pump is not running (but it is RUN in green) you shut off pump 1 (OFF in white) and we can see that the X-feed in closed. I was wrestling with all the electronics the other day, couldn't get my green/blue hydraulic systems going and I suspected had something to do with the AWCS being off. I did turn on the Rectifier Control Unit button like you did, messed w diff settings under battery too to try and "restart" any glitch....but was no go. Need to try again today.

    I've watched the official channel on this also, very helpful.
    I'm not overly concerned about the MCDU airways bugs, which I'm sure will be rectified in the near future.
    There are huge positives to take from this aircraft, systems, flight model and indeed how good it looks internally and externally.
    Shipping with no documentation was a slight disappointment, perhaps they will follow.
    The price point however is fantastic, excellent value in my opinion.

    You were correct with Climb Speed you used.

    ETE is Estimated Time Enroute. ETA Estimated Time Arrival.

      I read about the TRU after recording :) The NZ pilot on the MSFS feed stated 400ft AGL for CLB mode. I thought I said about the meaning of ETE and ETA. Not sure about the feathering - there are a few bugs in the aircraft at version 1.0 - no doubt it will get fixed in an update. It lifts before 120 knots, which isn't realistic - the NZ pilot said as much in the official walk-through.

[UPDATE] However, this plane does not play well with my Saitek peripherals. A constant fight between the flight panel and the navigation in the plane. The electrics all shut off whenever I hit the gear up or down on the switch panel. You can't over-ride the throttles and engine condition when you have the throttle quadrant installed. I suspect it I did some SPADnext work, I could probably get it working. It does this on the ATR and the TBM, but not most of the other planes.

Reference the charts for any altitude restrictions if following a STAR (use LittleNavMap if you don't have Navigraph), and then reference the pilot operating handbook for descent rates, or take it for a test flight to figure out what rate you can descend at in a given configuration.

    Question , when i turn on battery , then connect ground power on the tablet and then click both ground power buttons , a lot of my lights are already displaying faults (for example DC Gen 1/2 and ACW Gen 1/2) and also the prop brake light is already lit up where as none of yours are.

    How do you hold/set speed on the ATR? I know it doesn't hold speed like the A320N I've been learning to fly in sim recently so it's interesting to learn.

    Great explain Jonathan👍👍only a question...when you insert the flight plan you have DISCONTINUITY and you have to insert minimum 2 waypoint in the route right? I m on x box so i can choose and insert 2 waypoint in between the take off and the arrival ? And the ils frequency it s automatically inserted when you choose the arrival rway or you have to insert manually? Than you so much greetings from Italy😀👍

      There is no minimum when programming the flight plan - you can just clear the discontinuity and go direct from departure to destination.

      When I adjust trim, I am trimming the elevators. If you look in the key controls you can find out what the elevator trim is mapped to. I have it mapped also to buttons on my joystick - so I can easily trim while in-flight.

    Thank you so much for this video, I have been keeping a close eye on your channel since picking up the ATR yesterday and am learning a lot! Out of curiosity, do you need to update the MCDU data as it says 2014 for me?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому +2

      I've not looked at the dates. The aircraft is using the nav data from the simulator - so it will be using the Meteoblue data unless you have Navigraph - then it will be using that. I would ignore the dates :)

    • @RevReese
      @RevReese Рік тому

      @jonbeckett Thanks for the clarification! I wondered if that would be the case. I was just worried about everything else using old navigraph data and the MCDU using new data. Looks like I will update navigraph and update the sim and everything just to be sure. Thanks again, I can't wait to see more of your videos on the ATR as I already bought the Antonov 225, the Kodiak 100 and the Antonov AN2 based on your showcases! :)
      Edit: just rewatching the official cold and dark video and the Captain does explain that, not sure how I missed that the last two times I watched it! :)

      @@jonbeckett I'm sure I'm missing something simple but my experience seems to be that wherever I am in the menu system, or flight plan listing (which is empty if no flight plan has been entered), the DTO button has no effect at all. I had guessed it might have something to do with going direct to a waypoint, but couldn't get it to actually do anything.
