  • A beginners guide to operating the Sperry "Giropilot", and navigating by radio in the Douglas DC-3 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. We take off from Wycombe Air Park, fly some headings using the gyropilot, control pitch with the giropilot, and then look at flying directly towards VOR radio masts, and then flying radials. Enjoy!

    I forgot to mention in the tutorial - the radio compass (next to the nav radio instrument) is what we would now call ADF :)

      the old msn version had it an actucal Instructor and I sat down and figured it out way back when and I remember the msn DC 3 had a load of mods that were fab and I must say the panel looked better.

      Sadly they are phasing out real life ADF stations. One thing to be careful of - electrical storms can distort the direction of the signal, and even lead you into the storm.

      best way to keep her on the RW after touch down is to have the tailwheel locked. SHIFT + G lock/unlock, or pull the lever on the dashboard (but that is sometimes difficult as your are busy landing)

    I think you're using the heading selector back to front on the autopilot. You're using the "desired heading" knob to calibrate it and then using the gyro calibration knob to set the course you want. Which works but for the wrong reasons. Rather than telling the aircraft "you're pointing west and I want you to go north" you're telling it "you're pointing north but I am now moving where you think north is by 90 degrees".

    Takeoof 48" boost/2700rpm hold on the ground till the minimum V1/V2 speed of 82 kts - 95 kts METO Power (Max Except T/o) 38" boost/ 2550 rpm.
    At 110 kts /500 ft Climb Power 32.5" boost / 2050 rpm.

    From what I know about radial engines. Is that you do not want to idle as you do jet engines when descending. Idle too low and you’ll essentially cause spalling within the engines damaging them to Kingdom come. You control your descent by lowering your manifold pressure to around 30-20, RPM to around 2,050 and control speed with flaps.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Рік тому

      Yep. DC3s do good ground loops with engines at idle too.

    Another fun and educational video, Jonathan. I'll have to quit "cheating" and not use the GTN 750 and use the rudimentary gyro pilot. Down where the tail dragger wheel lock is, there's an autopilot switch. I think it switched to on when I used my GTN 750. Must switch on when you used the knob activate the Gyro pilot. I figured out how to make the co-pilot yoke disappear. Click below the hydraulic gauges. I'm surprised how well the pull down menu GTN 750 works with this plane. I'm so glad Microsoft added the DC-3 to the simulation.

    When you pull the manifold pressure" below the RPMs you are effectively destroying the engines; that's a big nono. You dont want to go under your props RPMs (usually 2000 RPM, 20" for a descent) until you are under 100MPH. This is from DC3 manuals

      It's difficult in MSFS too. I talked to a real DC3 pilot - the real thing behaves very similarly to MSFS. To keep it under control you have to be on top of the wheel brakes, the engine torque, and the shifting centre of gravity. It's not easy. If you do a power-on landing on a longer runway, it's relatively easy to keep it under control.

      If you mean "approach and autoland" - of course not. The real plane doesn't have it, so the sim doesn't have it. It does have an instrument that shows the HSI and glideslope though - so you can follow the beam down by hand.

    This video is absolutely amazing 👌
    What I want to figure out, I can tune VOR on NAV1 and 2, but I can only "see" 1.
    Is there a way to see the direction to Nav2
    Also, the VOR gauge doesn't seem to have a GS indicator when tuned to an ILS.
    I can get the track on an ILS, but don't see the GS.
    Am I using it wrong, or is that just how it is?.🤔

    i found that on the ground if you put altitude hold on gyro pitch doesnt work and when you do altitude hold again pitch works, but in the air if you do heading hold on then the gyro pitch wont work even after you do altitude hold again it still wont work. Also when gyro on no autopilot using trim wheel it also cancels out the pitch scroll wheel as well with my plane set to keyboard controls and using a joystick. Does anyone else find this and am i doing something wrong ? Can it be corrected? Love this plane my new fav to fly and i want to know it inside out.

      @GumperVanLier Рік тому

      Yes. Make sure you set your trim around negative 17. Also the balance is off. Check that and center it. At first, I like to start ready to go on the runway. This way you can see how it's set for take off. Despite this, I'm not always successful.

    I have a question, if you wouldn't mind. I've run into a problem with the gyropilot where it holds its heading a consistent 20 degrees to the left of the heading I tell it to, no matter what I do. I tried turning it off, lining it up and turning it on (in which case it should just hold the current heading, right?), but it immediately turns left by 20 degrees.
    Do you have any idea what could be the cause of it? I'm assuming it's user error but can't pinpoint what I'm doing wrong.
