This. I played played this when i was a kie alongside goku densetsu and i had an absolute blast with those ds games. I revisted attack of the saiyans recently and it jolds up honestly, it should be ported to switch n continued
Incredible game, always dreamed of a DBZ RPG but turned based. I wanted all the sagas on a big screen home console but this was the closest thing I got. I was hoping Kakarot was what I was looking for but the combat doesn't do it for me. I'd love every single saga in this style!
Check out the fanmade game Dragon Ball Z: Legend of Z. It was made using RPGMaker and covers all of DBZ, some of the movies, and even has Super content. It was crafted with love and meticulous care.
Before I watch, just gotta say that I'm so glad to hear you talking about this one. I recently got around to it for the 1st time earlier this year with added achievement support (gotta love emulation) and it holds up surprisingly well. I'm super disappointed this game didn't get a sequel, because it absolutely deserved it.
Such a great game. Love that the first few sections of the game were strictly the side characters like Krillin,Yamcha,Tien, etc. You didn't get Goku until later.
I remember back in 2009 when my mom took me to best buy and bought me Attack of the Saiyans. I didn't know what RPGs were back then but this game truly blew my mind
This game covers from the Piccolo Jr. Saga from the original Dragon Ball to the Saiyan Saga from Dragon Ball Z. That's cool, and also it bridge between the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z with more content to explore. That's awesome.

This game is what got me more interested in DBZ in general, as I had never seen the anime or read the manga. It's a dope game, even to someone who's not a diehard fan. Too bad they never made sequels to this game for the later sagas.
I'm so mad at myself for selling my copy of this 😭😭😭 I wish they would make more turn based DB games. I'd love a sequel to Fusions as well. It was one of the best 3ds games in my opinion.
If you haven't played it and want a more modern DBZ turn based game, I recommend looking into Dragon Ball Fusions on 3DS. We'll talk about it eventually, but I love that game.
@@retrorebound8887 forgot all about that game, I’ll have too see how much it goes for these days. I saw that one had some Budokai 2 energy with the fusion designs/concepts, would love to try it out
Honestly whenever you get a DBZ game that isn't a fighting game; it always feels like a breath of fresh air, but when that game is also a turn based RPG; well now you've got something special. Sadly never got a chance to play this one back in the day despite wanting to (and considering the prices not sure I ever will) but always remember emulating Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya Densetsu and just playing that crap out of that, so much fun. Something about DBZ and turn based RPGs is just that strange combo that shouldn't work but it just does.
I'm so glad I own this game. I'll never sell it. We all wanted a Legacy of Goku 4 or nowadays, a Super Legacy of Goku, but honestly, this was the game I wanted a sequel to the most, just imagining what the combat would evolve into with Super Saiyan added to the mix, would've been AMAZING.
I was hoping they continued with all the sagas. Frieza, Android, Buu. But make all the characters playable and viable. Yamcha being a speedy hard hitting machine in the battle against Frieza would be awesome.
It would be nice for them to make Dragonball games focused on the side characters..alot of lore fans would love to explore. Especially early yamcha or king piccolo
Love the videos Matty! Just wondering when you title these “is it as good” “is it actually bad” is this based on a certain meta critic score or based on your personal experience of reception at the time of release ? (a curious fan)
Great question! Typically, we go over to Metacritic/Opencritic to see what the consensus is and then discuss based on that. I learned with Broken Bond and its performance that I shouldn't make those titles off my personal experience only because Broken Bond is awesome and, in my personal life, people didn't think so. I know it ends up inviting the occasional "WUT?! BUT THIS GAME IS GUD/BAD BRO" but that's really it. Hope that answers your question!
The boss theme is a total badass awesome when fighting Vegeta I wish they remake this for the Switch and cover until Buu saga or better yet until Beerus or fudge that until Omega Shenron
A great game. I’ve played and beat it 3x. I remember there being a secret broly fight in this game . If you not almost to max levels on your characters. Don’t even attempt it.
The prime play order for experiencing DBZ story in games is: Attack of the Saiyans, then Legacy of Goku II, then Buu’s Fury. (For some reason, Legacy of Goku 1 was kind of bad)
Don’t know if i can say this but i’ve loved and love this game SO MUCH that i’ve bought it 4 times after losing it, selling it and everything… and, no lies here, I think i’ve played it over and over again, more than 30 times (at least), trying so many combinations… and every time i get sadder that there will never be a future for that "to be continued" at the end.
This was always an interesting game to me as a kid I loved the dragon ball origins games and always wanted this one but never actually got it. It’s definitely on my list to play eventually
Funny you did a video on this because a good friend of mine is playing through it right now. I perso ally haven't played it but it's always sounded so intriguing to me, I definitely want to try and play it sometime
Remember this game is made by Monolith Soft, the developer of Xenosaga, Project X Zone 2, Baten Kaitos, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. That's why it's awesome.
I still remember when a friend bought the Gameboy Advance version of the Dragonball Z Trading Card game without a manual in high school. He couldn't figure out how to play the game and after four or five of us trying it for a few lunch breaks I finally figured it out.
Maybe this comment will be unpopular but I feel as though the art style is done in such a great detailed pixel style, it has helped keep the game more timeless. I really love pixel art games and this one was very top notch... the newer 3d environments with cel shading just don't look that great to me. Dbz fighters looks like old newgrounds flash animations to me... great gameplay but the art style just doesn't hold a candle to this one imo. I really enjoyed the supersonic warriors games for this reason also. Idk if you have tried advanced adventure but I highly recommend that also. Legacy of goku 2 was the best of that trilogy imo.
An idea for a video: i'd love to see an episode of Retro Rebound on the return of "Boomer Shooters" games like Warhammer 40K Boltgun, Prodious, Ion Fury and the like
@James-gj8rn it's all good, I had just never really heard the term "Boomer Shooter" before and seeing it twice in one day was funny😅 have a good day and stay cool if you live somewhere warm

My only gripe with this game is its soundtrack - not that it's bad, but while the Legacy games had amazing chiptunes of the Faulconer Team score, and Yamamoto "adapted" some great tunes for the Budokai (and a hundred other) games, this one only has original songs and they're... Fine. And there's only like 6 of them. Gets kind of grating. Wish they had adapted Kikuchi or something (I do love how they use the japanese VOs & the original attack names tho)
Best dbz rpg game. They really explored the z works more before the new game Kakarot. I appreciated every dude character had their own story. There was a sequel teases with frieza but I guess the popularity of raging blast and xenoverse stomped handheld games.
