We used to believe ’pede/gay’ is a person that half man half woman 😂
So ‘Pede’ in Vietnamese can be used to describe something that has ‘half of this and half of that’. Something has two elements thatat completely opposite to the other.
The egg: sunny side is a whole while the other egg is scrambled.
The sausage : 1 kind is crunchy and one is chewy
The fish is salty creamy and the cheese is chewy fatty (what she really said is ‘Bùi bùi’ vs ‘Béo béo’ but i dont know how to describe that exactly in English)
That why she calls her dish ‘pede egg’

Pede is a French term for homosexual. I am surprised to see her use the term to describe her eggs

In some parts, we also refer to gay or bede people in Vietnam as "oil mixes with gas", or "half oil half gas". Just to increase Chad's cultural vocabulary of Vietnam.

Agree 100%. Your videos are getting better and better. I watch a lot of food vlogs and I have to say yours is in my top 3. Why? I think it has to do with your demeanor in front of the camera, and you being a trained chef comes through in the way you describe what you are tasting, how it is made, etc. This may be my favorite of your videos that don't have you roaming around HCMC with the wife and kids. Those are in a different category and equally interesting but different. Keep up the great work Chad!

If you haven't already tried it, Bit Tet in the north is another version of steak and eggs which is perfect for breakfast. The steak is one piece rather than chopped up, and they usually serve it with eggs, fried onion and red sausage (lap xuong). There's no salad with it but always banh mi, and on a cold winters morning in Hanoi, it's perfect.
