The motivation for why the Israelis bombed the Iranian consulate which wasn’t the embassy but the annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus was to take out Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi (& seven other IRGC officers). This puts pressure on Iran who was waging war through its proxies, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemeni, Hamas in Gaza & Syrian & Iraqi groups. Iran has worked @ destabilizing the region in a byzantine way through its proxies. Iran has been retaliating BUT in very different way; through its proxies waging the war!

Iran was the one being a nuisance to the world targeting the international trade routes and not focused only on israel their so called enemy. Iran trying to be oversmart shouldn't try to blackmail the whole world with their proxies.
The thing is...despite this escalation from Israel, Iran's response solely depends on if they want a full blown war against Israel and by extension the US, which seems illogical especially when they claim that they are close to researching "the BOMB" and are mere weeks away (according to their claims).
So maybe Iran's response might just be some symbolic retaliation
of little actual value. Which also hurts their image across the arab world as which other countries would tolerate assassination of their top generals at a foreign diplomatic post.

The diplomatic premises legal issue is not as clear as it's made out to be. I would say the strike is probably not illegal based on any kind of diplomatic immunity. That is what it means to have or not have diplomatic relations with another country. Neither syria or iran have diplomatic relations with Israel.
If one of the 2 countries had diplomatic relations with isreal it would be more complicated.
The sovereignty of a nation matters, whether there is a diplomatic ties or not.

For a regime that suffers heavily from being unpopular and illegitimate in the eyes of its people to a ridiculous degree, it would be so hard to recover from this incident
Most of you guys asking yourself why Israel is so bold and reckless at attacking the Islamic regime of Tehran and does not fear getting hit back?
They are one of the biggest militaries in the region after all and they claim they have one of the most sophisticated drone and missile capabilities in the world but why there aren't any retaliation ever from them?

Because they know they have absolutely zero support from the population and if they ever get dragged into a war as big as a war with Israel that can have potentially the US at her side this could lead to a massive disaster for them and can end up destroying their regime even before the first Israeli and American jets arrive at their doorsteps
You just need to look at the past 10 years of Iran's internal struggles and you'll find out that the regime in Tehran reached gunpoint for its mere existence and without its loyalist armed forces like IRGC and terrorist groups and fanatical militia mercenaries it can get toppled down by its people any moment(and I insist any moment)
So in other means, they are sitting right in the middle of the mud and any movement will agitate their death so the only thing they can do is to stand still and not move a muscle and just hope that their intervention in Ukraine ends in Russia's victory and then maybe Russians overlord and Chinese masters help them out from this hellhole they are placed themselves in right now.

The truth is that Iran is not really capable of retaliating or attaching Israel. But Iran attacked and occupied 3 embassies inside Iran: the American Embassy in 1979, the British Embassy in 2011 and the Saudi Embassy in 2016. Iran annexed the American Embassy into its own property.
