ive seen some other people first heat up the wire and lugs and then only apply solder. Is that necessary?

Totally a valid method. I also saw Goodwood audio apply the solder to the tip of the iron and then simply touch the iron to the wire/lug. Seems there are several ways to go about it. However, I will say that I do often find it necessary on certain things (like the back of pots and sometimes the ground lug on my SP400 plugs) to apply heat to that surface for a few seconds before applying the solder. It's true that both the wire and the lug need to "take" the solder and both need adequate heat for that to happen. You'll know the solder "took" when the edges of the pooled solder melt outwards on the surface.

What temp do you have to iron at? Mine just makes “beads” and doesn’t solder the same as yours. I was at 600 and using lead free solder. Does that matter?

I’m definitely not a soldering pro by any means, but, I can guarantee you that the methods in this video, combined with the parts that I use work. Maybe check out the specific solder that I’m using. Maybe it has something to do with your solder? Check the description for a full list of tools and parts I’m using.

Ok so I just started soldering and also it is just making beads. I've realized I did not tin my iron as I didnt realize that was necessary.
