My cure for the 2.9 curse

- The location of the fusible link for the heater of the oxygen sensor. I've seen a lot of rangers with this link blown but no outward signs of its failure. Causes lots of drivability problems when warm. Stalling chugging bad gas Mileage random lean codes.
You sir, saved my 1988 2.9 ranger from the junk yard!!
the bad link actually caused my O2 sensor to catch fire! . I have some wiring to do after the fire but, I fallowed the video and my truck runs like a champ again!
*my recommendation to any one doing this*
disconnect you battery!!
strip the plastic wire loom back with a razor
clean the wires up best you can to see colors it makes this go by very quickly
and actually replace the bad link with a fusible link, not a blade fuse there different pieces of equipment for different jobs.
(ps my 88 didn't have those big blocks that said "fusible link" but the colors were correct so watch for that in your truck)
and give mr. Duke Duckett a thumbs up!! that mans a hero!!
Another culprit for similar drivability issues is the TFI (Thick Film Ignition) module but its also called the ICM (Ignition Control Module) located on the back side of the distributor. Those things get hot and will cause all sorts of problems, most notably the vehicle will just shut off randomly, and once cooled down it will start back up and run just fine until that module overheats again. I carry a spare with me and a special driver to get at the screws. There are a few who have re-located the modules inside the cab which helps a lot.
Using plenty of dialectric grease helps out as well.I relocated the igntion module to a better place and zero issues,I basically did the module mod.
Thank you so much It just worked for my 87 Rangers and I'm no good at electrical Truck runs smoothly again 10/19/2021 >> Your my best friend LOL
Definitely going to try this tomorrow my trucks running great until warm then runs like dog 💩 pops and sputters and only does 25-30 mph at the most
That Ranger is quadruple cursed to not want to start at all
Very informative thank you 👍.
i hotwired my sensor heater , bam fixed that ranger. THANKS BRUH
and when it idles I can smell gas that im guessing is coming out of the exhaust
Did you figure it out i have a 87 ranger doing the same thang
@@arsonkent9532 same in mine with my 88
Good to know not sure how Ill replace it yet but having those issues
Duke buddy I need ya lol I’m gonna check this if it fixes it cool but mines spitting and sputtering sometimes idling high you think it’s this ?
i have a 1991 and i’m having trouble finding this connector and wire
so replacing the upstream o2 sensor wont fix this issue?, im having exact same problem as you, it seems to sputter and die when im at idle in park and even stopped at a light.
Michael Bodner it can but I'd check the fuseable link first
Michael Bodner vp4 sensor
I have a 1990 ford ranger mine will be running in park and nuturl then when I go in gear it will shut off or when I’m driving is the issue iv been having
@@phantom3rdchannel I have 1988 ford ranger 2.9 it starts up fine an run okay for about few miles then sputters like hell an Eventually cut off And then it is hard to crank When it cranks it sputters runs a little bit Then sputters more Anyone know how to fix
@@justinthrasher6436 Check your fuel pressure may be a bad regulator
Ok so I have a 1988 and it was running at idle then just died and it hasnt started since it has fuel pressure but no fire what's so ever I've got my 4th starter on now my 3rd solenoid new fuel pump relay 2nd external fuel pump ignition box blinker box I've been threw all fuses. I put new ignition box and blinker on thinking it would solve my lights flicker and slow turn signals but clearly thats not the problem
My windshield wipers are slow as well and don't turn off so they are unplugged
This sounds like a classic example of bad grounds check where the negative cable meets everything and the body grounds when in doubt add some but definitely sounds like shut grounds
87 Ford ranger starter and flywheel are grinding two gether put shim in sill make the same thing
Great job 😁
Thank you.
You still around I have questions?
Where can I purchase this wire and how much of the wire will need to be replaced? The entire wire or just the short 6-12" Blue part that terminates into the grey wire? Thanks my Bronco II is doing this and this may be the solution. How would I test each side of the fusible link to see if it is acting crazy as suggested?
Miles Payne just the small blue section of wire. test for voltage at the grey and yellow wire on each side of the wire outside of the grey terminationsstick a safty pin through and measure with your red positive probe on the wire and the negitive o the ground of car or negative terminal. should be the same about 12v with key on. The blue wires a specific size it should be marked 20 gauge they sell it at any O'Reillys packaged as fusible link wire 20 gauge . make sure if you do replaces to also replace your O2 sensor as it shorting internally is what blows it out
duke duckett need too replace the wire how do I do so ?
I have the same problem, been a great pickup as I drive 60 miles one way to work, why?sentimental.lots of miles but I love this truck and will try that thank you for your input,I am in Indiana and work in Greenfield don't want any more loan payments;by the way I have been thinking of putting diesel engine in this and could do it now but hesitating pryer to actual comencment,do you think 5 speed Ford tranny will be compatible?Thank you for reading.
I have the 2.8 liter (it has many problems)
Will this cause the idle to jump and act up?
It did on mine
I have a 1989 Bii, and I can’t find these wires
If you’re still looking, there’s a plastic splash shield covering them. That needs to be removed first.
@@OCtheG gotcha. I’ve put a 4.0 since I posted that comment. Thanks
Update? Have a 89. Need tips.
I sold the truck 4 years ago all the info on this is in my videos
@dukeduckett so what did u fuse together? It looks like u cut the wires and just twisted them back together
Dustin Clapshaw at the time I had but I fixed it later. You cut the fusible link out and replace it with either a new fusible link or a fuse holder.
@@phantom3rdchannel what size fuse my friend...
@@ep4591 i think i used a 10 amp
what's wrong with just having a hot wire and not having a fuse
So what's the cure bud?
You replace the fuseable link for the o2 sensor heater
i want to subscribe but then ill ruin it
