- I've asked where all the vacuum lines connect on a 1988 Ford Ranger with a 2.9l V6. My truck is still my daily driver with almost 230k miles, with original motor and transmission.

Thank you!! You really helped me identify a lot of the vacuum lines! Gotta hate it when previous owners move things around for stuff like that.
Oh I agree!
Note. The entire run of Ranger and Bronco 2 s that had the 2.9 Ltd engine came with both auto and manual transmissions.
Yea I have an '87 2.9L 5-speed manual
@@10thejgm78same. Heads cracked and replaced them. Now it does when idling down
oddly enough your video helped me find out what the MAP sensor was. This has been very helpful throughout my entire recent ownership of my 1989 ranger.
Glad it helped!
So many Vacuum issues ive been messing with on my 87 2.9 4wd and not enough info online! This saved my truck from a shop visit and my wallet from emptying! Thank you! A sub from me
Glad it helped! A fairly easy motor to work on!
My 88 is a 2.9 4x4 with a 5 speed stick. Pretty cool. I have the STX model. Thanks for sharing
Have a 88 2.9 with a manual transmission, fun little truck.
Thanks for another great video. One question on that Carbon Canister. How important is it to have those caps on the ports? Mine fell off and are lost. Does that impact performance of the canister or the engine itself? Do these canisters ever need replaced?
Very knowledgeable and informative great video!👍
Working on an 87bronco 2 and this vid helped a lot! Wondering if your crank case air out has a second nozzle on top of the large one that goes into throttle body
There is an EGR connection somewhere in there from what I recall, my truck does not have EGR.
Thanks man. You complete went around the one I needed
What did you need?
@radozeman Wheres the cruise control line?
@radozeman Wheres the cruise control line?
I have an 87 ranger with a 2.9 v6. 5 speed manual transmission. No idea how many miles but recently stopped getting power. And only a running on a few cylinders. Either not getting fire or fuel. Haven’t had a chance to really tear into it.
And thank you very much I didn't know I was looking for this until I found it
Much needed video! Thnx
Thanks!
So glad I found this
Glad it helped!
Very helpful. On the driver's side, you note the small plugged vacuum port on the intake. Any idea why mine would have a hose (currently broken) there instead of a plug?
I don’t, if it’s broken, at the very least plug it! I’m sure there’s additional options, just not sure which ones would require additional vacuum lines. Vacuum hubs perhaps?
Could be for cruise control
Thank you
I recently purchased a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.9 and I am missing the hose from the manifold to the in take box under the battery and there was smoke coming out that hole on the manifold is that something bad?
What’s the port called that goes to the intake to the brake vacuum. Mine rusted and broke I’m trying to replace it
What diameter line are we looking for? And about how much length? Sorry if I missed it, picking some up for a buddy's Ranger that's surging when it idles.
Varies by line, most I would say are 1/8-1/4
Thanks!
Idk if you still check these comments but im having a really hard time identifying a vaccuum like that comes off that tree there on the right side of the manifold. You identified the top line, front line, plug on the back, and the line going off to the right BUT I also have another one underneath that leads off to the passenger side of the engine bay. Also, what would cause brown fluid to be in those lines??
There’s only 3 lines on my truck, forth one is caped off. The three I do have though, big one goes to the brakes, small one to the fuel valve just below it, and the third goes down the passenger side to the transmission modulator. This sounds like the one you are asking about. Is the fluid transmission fluid? If it’s old it’ll be brown.
I have the same engine on my B2. I don't know where I would connect where the vacuum line that's below the battery goes to? the previous owner didn't have anything connected to it.
If it is the one that connects to the filter box, it should to a valve that switches the incoming from either the front or over the exhaust manifold.
Around 3:25/3:30 you talk about two lines coming out of the air box, one line goes near the IACV and the other goes down below for the intake. Which one is which in the airbox though? Cant really tell in the video and someone really flipped my lines around. Btw I have the exact same truck. Thanks for your help!
I guess its more like 2:50.. haha. Please let me know!!
I'd like to say the front one is the connection to the air intake, though in theory I don't know that it would matter as it is just a switch that opens and closes.
@@radozeman so the front one drops down to the air intake and the back one nearest the firewall goes near the idle air control valve? Sounds good I'll definetly try it
Where can you buy all these hoses
Thank you but my 89 bronco have a pill shaped plastic black canister with missing vacuum lines right by the left firewall any thoughts?
Manifold Pressure sensor maybe? ua-cam.com/video/KS5HkVPHg3I/v-deo.html
That vacuum line that goes to the tranny. That only for autos?
Helpful
I have a 89 2.9 an its 4x4 5speed. Never heard of them being mostly automatic
Manual was mostly on the smaller motor options.
i have a standard transmission in my 88 2.9 the made quite a few of them too
By standard you mean manual?
I’ve also got a Manual trans 2.9 v6 88. 4speed
I have a bronco ii with the same motor and manual transmission, same year, 1988. Has fuel and has spark but won't start.. trying to figure out what the issue is
What about timing? And or compression?
Falling for my 88 ranger
I would also check your starter relay on the fender also check your grounds and as stupid as it sounds check your terminals if they are slightly lose or damaged they will make it harder to start
They may not have used the manual transmission behind the v6 but they did use one on its little brother the v4. Interesting little motor.
That is true, as far as I know all the 4 cylinders where manual transmission
I think the Saab had a few automatic transmissions sonets. Was the only company I know of that sold the v4 in the United states
RDAllen I have the v.6 with a manual fm145 transmission it’s an 87 I found in Alaska Montana edition or something like that
My 90 2.9 was a 5speed
I HAVE AN 88 FORD RANGER MANUAL v6 2.9l
The air box has two hoses going into the left side of it if looking from the front of the truck. Do you know in what order they should be arranged? Thank you.
I do not.... I don't know that it would necessarily matter either.
Thanks for explanation. I got an 88 Ranger -(2.9) w- manual transmission. Got 178K miles and was spooked because I had strong gas odor after recent gas fill. No signs of leak. Still looking for signs of gas leaks. Idles great. Any ideas???
From the engine area? or the tank? my tank had rusted out on the very top, between the tank and the frame, which caused a gas smell for mine.
@@radozeman not sure. Truck is garaged and I inspected all the hoses in your video. Re-inspected after market gas cap hoping for easy fix. Blew out garage with blower and will check closed garage in a few hrs. It’s been 3 days in garage sitting idle with strong smell.
@@tman9338 id check around the tank then
@@radozeman Thanks. Will be taking it to a local shop. Know a guy who is sharp and honest.
@@radozeman I crawled underneath and have a localized gas stain and smell coming from the upper portion of the gas tank. Suspect it’s leaking somewhere neat the upper gas tank connection port ad dripping downward. Unable to access. Suspect I will need to drop the tank or remove the bed to fix gas leak. Your thoughts on better access???
@RDAllen ive got an 87 2.9l bronco 2 did they have ac is so can you show me where the lines would go someone ripped them out before I got it
They can have AC yes, mind does not so I don't know where the lines need to go.
I can't seem to get my 87 broncos 2s idle to come down from 1700-2000rpms. I've tried everything, located vacuum lines and such but no luck. I'll admit there are a couple not plugged in but is that really the problem???
Could be, especially if manifold side is open! There is a manifold pressure sensor mounted along the back firewall that could also be bad.
@@radozeman thanks for the info, I'll look into it. Update tho, I did notice that the throttle cable doesn't come all the way back to the little bolt like its supposed to. I believe the throttle may be slightly open because of it.
Do the Manual xmission 2.9s have a transmission modulator?
I won’t think so.
@@radozeman yea, I checked, and it does not.
I have a 1988 with the 2.9 and a 5speed and 4wd but it’s got a bad misfire right now I’m trying to identify the problem
Check Engine light on? If so start there! Next check filters, fuel, air etc! Spark plugs? Main coil? Distributor? Timing on the distributor?
RDAllen I’ve already done plugs wires coil and air
Where is the Mass Air Flow Sensor? I want to clean mine and cant seem to find it. Cleaning it is supposed to make my engine run much better.
This truck doesn't have one, too old. Has a manifold pressure sensor instead, I don't think there is anything you can do with it.
I found that my air intke was really dirty! So i took a of air to it and it has more power. Also cleaned the throttle body with its specific cleaner and again more power and a quieter idle. Thank you!
I would join/subscribe but i cant afford the $$ fee right now! Thank you again and i have watch several of your videos they are great and help me out alot!
I'm missing the tube shown at 3:05 that connects the air intake to the exhaust manifold. Does anyone have the part number? Also I just replaced the IAC valve, MAP, and throttle sensor, which fixed a rough idle (thank you). But now I'm idling high (2000 rpm) and not dropping. Could that missing tube be the reason? Thanks
Did you check the idle adjustment screw? Doubt that tube would affect the idle that much, as the part # I have no idea, should be able to make any 2" tube work (I think its 2").
@@radozemanThanks, is there any way to check if the screw is already set correctly? Or should I just fiddle with it and see if it drops the idle? I wouldn't want to drop the idle manually and think its ok, but then really its a vac issue.
@@darkhorsellc9047 Not that I know, if the truck is running properly and warmed up you would just adjust it the proper idle RPM, which I'd like to say is 6-700?
@@radozeman Many thanks, I'll give that a shot. I appreciate your videos, my truck might have gone to the junk yard otherwise!
I recently replaced the 2inch you are talking about and it made a big difference. I am also have an inconsistent idle but its not real bad. I noticed that the lines going behind the batteries are cracked in many places. I cant find these hoses anywhere thinking about replacing with rubber.
How come the MAF sensor isn’t in between the intake and the air box?
It’s on my 90 version and I hate it
If I understand it correctly, it’s a pressure sensor instead of a flow sensor. Both important for proper fuel! Also reason vacuum leaks are not good on a fuel injected vehicle!
RDAllen because I wasn’t to put an after market air intake on mine, my box is broken open and my throttle body gasket is blown also the MAF sensor gasket is blown and I’m getting terrible acceleration
My RPMs doesn’t match up with my speed
How would I go about fixing? Replace both gaskets and get an after market intake?
But then on the AFtr market Intake there is no space for the MAF sensor gasket
David you can’t shorten up the hose so it fits? To get an original air intake?
I am in the same situation. 1992 ford ranger 2.9.. My sensor between the intake and airbox is falling apart and I cannot find out what it is anywhere.. someone previously modded the intake before I purchased the vehicle. so there is no air box, I believe the intake is from a 96 4.0. Did you come to any conclusions?
Evan Horvat so it has a mass airflow sensor? You can’t get a mass airflow sensor for a 96 4.0 if that’s what you suspect it is?
Ford never could figure out there manifolds, I’ve had two 5.4s with cracked heads was a problem with them too
Never had any more problems with upgraded ones on this truck.
Well its a ferd theres your problem haha
O yes blaming the worst motor ever produced by ford and wide scaling it to all of them I’ll say this I’ve had a 2.3 95 from 215k to 583k miles before rebuild still have it and I have a 88 2.9 xlt ranger with 488k miles I’ve went thru 4 transmissions all rebuilt with oem parts the a4ld is atrocious but I’m rebuilding it currently with the trans go quick shift kit but honestly fords are constantly over cast by LS fanatics but most ford vehicles are incredibly simple and little to no problems and anyone with 2 cents to rub together can fix the problems they do have u can take top end off a 2.9 in 20 minutes with a impact and a ratchet with extension and 4 sockets don’t even need remove the motor I guess I am a fanboy I also got a Tahoe with 184k or so miles as long as it ain’t a dodge or a 5.4 or 6.0 it should do fine
My 86 is a 2.9 4speed w o/d manual
Same with my 88 and it also has a v6 lmao
I have an 86 with a 5 speed
They did also come with a manual transmission.
On the 2.9?
@@radozeman yup i got two 88s and both are 2.9 with the mazda 5 speed factory
Anyone know the hose name at 5:30?
I'm not sure, goes to temp sensing valve on the filter cover.
On my 87 Ranger it goes to the EGR Valve Solenoid. One of the lines on the EGR Solenoid connects to the EGR Valve, and the other one is the one in the video
Do you have video on relays not few spots the relays on that sidewall having problems with the solenoid in the same truck 87 Ford ranger V6 2.9 and I had to take the valve body down to change the only solenoid I saw in the wires were arcing so that's probably why and my cigarette lighters never been out and it's out so the truck will not shift or wasn't and now I changed the shift solenoid the only one that I seen the filter and the fluid and I've already had it rebuilt not too long ago so it's kind of weird how out of nowhere so I knew it was kind of like a electrical or something cuz it's still rides I guess in lint mode and I'm trying not to drive it but that's my only car so now I'm at the relays it's the relays I hope that God that's what it is maybe you know
Hope this helps even tho it’s late check IAC valve MAF sensor crankcase ventilation valve those are for if it’s running bad if it’s actually transmission shifting issue the transfer cases can have issues locking into lower gear and not onto the higher chain keeping it in limp mode other things could be vehicle speed sensor affecting shifting also depending on year they used electric solienoid for the overdrive which could keep in limp mode
I need a motor 2.9 ford
They use to have them on eBay, don’t know if they still do or not
Where is the A/C recirculation line??
What AC? This unit only has 2 60 AC 😂
Oh well my b. Yeah there's certainly no compressor or evaporator housing in sight
Mine is a 5 speed manual
With the 2.9L V6 motor?
@@radozeman yes indeed
