Patreons got to see this video early! This is part of my new format where I take longer to make videos and upload less frequently but, I hope, the pacing is more engaging and the overall quality is more worth my viewers' time! Let me know what you think!
@@ralphhowes I have to agree with you when it jumped and stopped on the wire half way through, as Jake said barbed wire. I felt my blood drain and my heart was in my mouth, then he said he is fine!!!! I said some nasty things at my screen.
THIS has to be the best video I've seen from this channel!!! The simple repairs to a GREAT truck, a short adventure drive, THE DOGGIE!!! Man! You keep this up, you're going to get a lot more subs!! Thanks for sharing!
Great fun to watch. The admission that "sometimes it's better to just pay someone" to get work done - encouraging! The production qualities are also improving - good audio makes for a good video! I enjoyed the voiceover work (mixed well with the other audio) and the inclusion of the dog barking audio! Great stuff Jake - thanks for your hard work to share this with us.
I had an exact same ranger that I bought new in November 1989. It had a 2.9 6 cylinder 4X4 long bed blue. Came from factory with high rider series. I no longer own my truck. I do know they make a kit for installation of a 5.0 302. Years ago I saw a guy that had a 302 in his Ranger. Good truck!
Hey so might be about to purchase the exact same truck you owned. Rebuilt 2.9l motor (2 years ago) 4x4 extended cab long bed. Seems to be in great shape and the price I believe is right.
Question: Do you have any experience towing with that truck and if so, how well would you say it does the job? Also with that 5.0 302 conversion, any idea how much that would cost? I imagine it would make the truck tow fine, I'd just rather not have to invest the extra $ if this engine is indeed solid. Thanks
I had one like this. Mine was an 87. Good truck, just don't pull out in front of anyone😅. If it ever hangs in 4WD, back up a few feet and the auto hubs will unlock.
My first vehicle was a black '92 Ranger SuperCab 4x4 with the 4.0L and 5-speed. That truck got me through college and a couple years after before I traded it on a 2000 Ranger. Loved that truck and would kill to find another one but they're getting scarce...
Like a lot of folks noted already - terrific video and loved the new format. Fun work on the truck and a great adventure using it. Very cool. Thank you.
Thanks for clue-ing me in on the Teeter Rock - I'm in Kansas City and will make it a point to check it out in my 4Runner next Spring. Good work on the Ranger!
Good to see the ranger out and about. Beautiful scenery. Reminds me of my old 88 I think GMC S15 and my 91 Toyota pickup. Such fun little rigs. Back to the days of the truck tells you how fast you’re going to go and not the other way around.
I had an 83 Ford Ranger standard cab 4x4 For 18 years The engine was a 2.3 With the same 4 inch lyft And 32 inch MT Tires It went almost anywhere best truck i ever owned I sold the truck now I want it back😢
Your power steering pump will be relatively cheap and easy to replace. I recommend you do it. Your truck will steer like brand new considering you’ve already done an alignment.
JakeTube! Just watched you on WatchJrGo, then your own video here, and finally watched the show you produced Good Morning UA-cam. It’s Jake’s universe, we’re just living in it.
Always good to see a 89 Ranger. I had one from 1994-2000 and sold it when I got my 2000 F150. It was a 2wd 2.3L 5 speed, the motor was a total dog but that was probably a good thing when I was a stupid teen/early 20s driver. I wish I still had it but the 2002 S10 2.2L 5 speed that was my father in law's truck does a pretty good emulation of theblack of power the 2.3L had. Funny thing was in 89 they moved to a 8 plug design with the 2.3 and that bumped it from 88hp in 88 to 105hp iirc. Even with the extra power it still struggled to maintain 55 mph going up the Sidney Sherman Bridge in 4th gear. It wasnt as big a deal in the 90s as it would be now though.
That shift actuator looks an awful lot like the power window motors Ford used from the 60s - 80s. Wonder if they didn't just modify one to include a switch so the module knew what position it was in and called it good.
Well done, Jake. Nice to see the old Ranger working well. They are neat, that is for sure. The 2.3 litre is no powerhouse, but it does the job well. It dates back to the late 60s in England, so the bugs are well and truly out of it. One thing to consider is changing the differential fluids after going through the river unless you have rerouted and extended the vent tubes. Have fun with that truck. Looks like a winner to me.
good video ,nice upgrades ..and decent lil off road truck that u dont need to love or care about too much lol...my problem is like with dogs i love every car and want to save and fix them all
I kind of figured that was your truck when I saw a Ford Ranger out in front of the shop. I'm glad you got it going and could have an adventure in it. The Flint Hills are pretty cool
My 87 Ranger is about ready to go again after being ignored for a few years....seeing videos like this gets my hopes up!! Just wondering what else is going to pop up and need repair....time will tell.
Looks like you are doing way better and having a lot more fun even though you have about eleven jobs now ! Enjoy your reset in life and know that those of us that follow you and enjoy your antics are super happy for how things are turning out for you ! Also , the girlfriend seems to be just what you needed , and appears to have adapted nicely to the 100% life style.
Check for a stretched out throttle cable at the pedal. Zip tie trick will take up the slack and cause the truck to run less rich, increasing hp and fuel mileage. My apologies if you already did this. Worked great for my ‘94.
@@100PercentJake this was a really big problem on rangers back in the day. I ran into a 93 ranger that had that cable so stretched out that it needed 2 zipties to take in all the slack. basically just clamp the throttle full open, press the gas to the floor and look to see how much extra cable is sticking out inside the cab.
If you need to check 12 and 24 volt electronics an 18v drill battery will do both it helps to have a couple foot long piece of wire with alligator clips on one end and the other end soldered so that it’s nice and stiff. Should be the two outer most terminals on all the major brand batteries.
That's a really capable 4x4 you now have! Short of a Jeep or Bronco, that is probably one of the better off-road configurations out there. In fact, it might even be a bit better since I am guessing it is a lot lighter than those other two vehicles.
I miss my old Ranger. Those 4 cylinders are gutless turds, but they're damn bulletproof. That old truck was still quicker to 60 than my current daily driver, which is both sad and hilarious. Why did VW think 11 seconds was an acceptable 0-60 time for a production vehicle in the 2000s??
Have you seen the video where a guy pulls a D Cell battery apart and uses the center carbon rod and makes homemade replacement brushes for an electric motor.
i have 1990 ford ranger with the exact same lift kit as you do, i have a 6" lift, but I have a question: does your truck feel bumpy as hell? I can't tell if it's just rough country shocks being stiff but man I feel EVERY single bump and it hurts
Had a good laugh thankyou, a tip point the exhaust tip downwards, you will get fed up cleaning the exhaust soot off your dailt the garage wall the parking lot car next to after getting shouted at as per the pedestrians pink leggings the dog and girlfriends legs and any attire she is wearing trust me this is a learnt lesson and have the bruises to show for it. You need to get the V6 turbo from the Cyclone or from several other models that use this motor, a shame the suspension kit did not include a front levelling spring or the spacer you can get these seperately and will help the offroad handling and devise a disconnect system for the front swaybar as a lot of the time it is needed, find some longer chassis to swaybar links and fit a clevis pin to the top's and then you can disconnect quick and aesily when needed, I am in the UK and have one, so parts are always a problem as most gear has to come over the pond for me, so I get creative with some things, like converted the four wheel shift to a cable and lever mechanism as with all the mud that gets in they don't last long.
After looking at your channel I've noticed you've bought a lot of vehicles, what do you do with them all? Do you still own them all or do you get rid of them?
this was/is a great truck. i had a 93 until transmission blew up for 3rd time. I have 2000 now. Ford F'ing Ranger! For the love of God wear some welding gloves. go to harbor freight if you have to.
I've seen the Rough Country lifts destroy the front differential when the axles articulate. Any word on that? The drop plate hits the diff housing from bad clearance.
You call yourself a hack when you are really just budget conscious. Here's a hack for you. So many power steering pumps are growling because hoses leak and pumps are not checked often and things take a beating. If you have replaced the bad hose but can't do the pump at this time, pour a half ounce of Lucas oil into the power steering pump and make sure you add enough power steering fluid to reach the full mark. This will quiet things right down. Does it extend the life of the pump? That I do not know but your growling pump seemed to work just fine so you might consider this hack.

I like the giant oversized smooch mark on your drivers side window.

that dog looks so cute and chill
that came out great!
Thanks for the vibe bro getting one of these trucks soon

Jeeps are light because they’re Unibody, I think this ranger might weigh more than a Comanche. Definitely weighs more than an Xj

How would you address the dangerously slow issue? Lol
You completed a project and got a day off!?! And it didn't all go to shit?!! Does hoovie know about all this?
Hey! A vehicle that when it's fixed doesn't break again on the first trip out, who woulda thunk?
