I think, more to the point is, that so many of the lost grand old houses ended up like this one: abandoned and in great disrepair. And expensive to maintain when they are in excellent repair.
They are things of beauty for sure, and I wish someone (or I, when the Lotto gods smile on me) could save them all!

Equally amazing and gratifying is that it remained basically untouched and that it is being preserved! (This situation is very similar to Wilderstein in Rhinebeck, NY, the Suckley home.)

I looked up information about the Hegeler Carus families. Mary's father built this mansion. He and his friend were into zinc mining & other minerals. Mary was the first woman to graduate from an Illinois college with an engineering degree. She worked alongside her father in the business and eventually ran it.
Her husband was a writer and editor of religious articles and publications. He was a pioneer in introducing interfaith communication.
It is well worth reading information about these two families. There's a lot more to both of these families than the above synopsis. 😊

Old Coke Cola Machines from the 1940’s-1950’s are all an interest to me. I have I think 16 old Coke Cola machines dating back to the 1940’s- early 1950’s. And more Old Radios from the 1940’s, and 100’s of O Gauge, and Standard Gauge Trains. I have been collecting old cars, radios, lights signs and more for over 30 years. DuPont Circle is stunning historical structure after stunning historical structure turned into dive bars with faulty sewage mixed in with a few maintained ones. However, so many have been reduced to cement floors, open ductwork, and an interior as cold as the clientele. I did not grow up wealthy nor find my way to wealth, but I appreciate it. I literally gasped when I saw the original laundry room, gym, kitchen and butlers pantry intact. These are the rarest of rooms as they often don’t survive in historic homes. So in addition to the absolutely magnificent architecture and interiors, especially those marquetry floors, intricately.stenciled ceilings, and original light fixtures, this house gives us a rare glimpse into original rooms and artifacts rarely seen in any historic property of that era. This Home absolutely should be preserved. I am so thankful it was saved and it is a museum. We all should support this museum. Thank you for sharing this with us. Back when homes were made with true craftsman who appreciate and took pride in their accomplishments and work. Tis the reason why most are still in great functional order. These days, you don't know who or what is building your home...

The craftsmanship blood sweat and tears that went into every groove of carved form of talented art is a rarity that will never be mimicked in today society of building homes, nor will the appreciation for what was ever be felt in modern day homes. I'm glad that people are restoring some of these old spirits that deserve to continue surviving us all after all these beautiful characters of these historical places have endured thru the tests of time. The grand ol"saying.....if a home could speak, imagine the stories it could tell, & the secrets that they hold.
    Up most respect.

Does this gorgeous home/museum belong to the state now? Maintenance needs to be kept up to preserve this part of history. I wish you had provided more information about the family. The family had to be very rich &/or the father had a very well-paying job. It doesn't look like any expense was spared when building it.😊❤

This is a beautiful house, made even more so knowing that generations of one family called it home. This is from when houses had character and originality. I watch YT videos showing multi-million dollar homes for sale throughout the country, and the architecture seems more like that of a business office building or a huge warehouse. They feel cold and are show-offish, and not something I would imagine generations wanting to live in. I hope the members of the family that grew up in the house in this video had happy lives.

The kind of craftsmenship found here is irreplaceable and is to be marvelled at!
