- Welcome to Springfield, Illinois. Today, we will be walking around the old neighborhood of Abraham Lincoln and touring the home he shared with his family. The Lincoln's moved into this home in 1844 and lived here until leaving for Washington DC to assume the presidency. He never again returned to Springfield until his burial. Today, we will talk about Abraham Lincoln's life here, tour the home, walk around the neighborhood, and visit a neighboring home as well as the visitor center. Join me today as we step back in time and visit the home of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln.

I love these old style houses and it’s nice too see history being preserved for future generations too see
I grew up in Washington, a suburb of Peoria, Illinois. For our 8th grade field trip, we went to Springfield and toured Lincoln’s home, law office, and tomb, as well as the nearby State House. It turned out to be a pivotal event in my life, since seeing the legislature in action and relics of Lincoln’s law practice inspired in me the determination to become a lawyer. Consequently, I later went to law school and practiced law for 30 years before retiring. All inspired by a trip to Springfield!
How cool thank you for sharing ❤
Just the thought of life before plumbing and electricity is crazy
I too lived in Illinois at one point, and today I have family that lives in Washington, IL. We originally lived in another suburb of Peoria, IL
I did the same trip in 8th grade! From Gurnee, IL!
I did that same field trip in 8th grade and I still think about it today!!
I am Australian and admire Abraham Lincoln as one of the truly outstanding heroes of human history. I visited Springfield several years ago and visited the home every day for a week or so. It was a privilege to visit his home. I also visited his nearby tomb and the remains of New Salem where he lived as a very young man. I was driven to New Salem in a spectacular act of kindness by an American woman. Someone looking for a business idea might consider running a van for tourists between Springfield and New Salem!
Didn’t he own slaves?
@godsgirl7201 Lincoln only grew up in free states where it was illegal to own slaves. Can you show me where you read that he did indeed own slaves?
@@cristiangomez4537 there was slavery all throughout the northern states. Maybe you pick up a history book.
@@ajohn502 ok now try answering my question now?
@ajohn502 where did I say there wasn't? I said he grew up in free states. Now, can you answer and show me where he owned slaves?
My great great grandmother met President Lincoln..when she was a little girl.He stopped by train..she shook his hand. ❤ My grandmother told me about all this.I was really surprised 😮❤
Quite an honor I am sure

Nice well maintained home. One of the best President United States ever had
Not simply one of the best, THE best president!
He owned slaves lol
@@godsgirl7201 note even remotely true, where did you get that information?!
@@godsgirl7201 Lincoln was the great emancipator. He was responsible for outlawing slavery and making it illegal! He was strongly opposed to the practice and never once enslaved anyone, although his wife’s family did. Don’t spread misinformation
@@godsgirl7201 Sources? Wasm't slave-owning a SOUTHERN thing?

Lovely home, well taken care of..Lincoln would be proud.
It would be nice to see it decorated for Christmas as it might have been back in the 1840s.
I wish neighborhoods were still like that today. That would be lovely.
I agree. Most of the authentic, genuine natural history in America has been destroyed. It's nice to see some areas are preserved
It looks great but has no heaters, aircon, or flushing toilet!
I agree.
They have it in nc
@@barrywainwright3391 that’s because there’s no money in it for the elite in preserving neighborhoods. It’s all about tearing down, building, rebuilding, tearing down, and all at taxpayer expense .
I live in a country, where the corrupted politicians have destroyed it for their benefits n wellbeing. I always admired n respected This brave n honest president Mr .Lincoln. This vedio made my dream true.Thank you somuch.
Such as Jimmy Carter also, honest and humble,
Very few because the elite are pushing their agenda.
True
While I admire Lincoln, it must be said that, as a politician, he pulled a few fast ones. When he was in the state legislature, he joined a few colleagues who actually jumped out a window to prevent a quorum for an upcoming vote! As president, he suspended the writ of habeas corpus, a highly illegal and unconstitutional measure. He was no doubt a great leader, but not in any sense perfect!
I grew up on Lincoln Avenue in a small town in northern New Jersey right outside of New York City and I grew up loving Abraham Lincoln since I was two years old… I am so excited to see this video… I’m in my 60s and I thought I would never see Abraham Lincoln‘s home.. and now it’s come true🇺🇸❤️🤍💙😇🙏☮️✝️💜⭐️🌎
That's incredible 😊
Very nice
Lincoln Ave in Fair Lawn?
Just visited there with grandsons and went to his tomb as well
THE PRANAM THE❤😊
I think the home was lovely! President Lincoln did quite well considering that he was born in a log cabin! 😊❤
I went to his childhood home in Indiana. Very small. All that was left at the time was the footprint.
I am so thrilled with this video. I will be 74 soon. I "met him" when I was 12, and have been awed by him ever since. In 1962 my parents and I visited the Fords Theatre, which had not been refurbished. It was a Lincoln Museum. Plain walls, wooden floors and exhibits. Thinking back, I think I felt closer to him there under those circumstances, than if I were to go back there today. My father went to purchase a small botebook so that i could take notes on the exhibits. I was 12.
From that point on, he's the human being I've reverred the most in spite of the fact, I recognize his many flaws. After leaving academia i began lecturing in various aspects of Lincoln annually in my local community. But sadly, I never made it to Springfield. My son and his family are vacationong in the West this week, but took a southern route in order to visit his tomb and sent me pix. They didnt take time to tour his home. I will be sending him a link to this site. Thanks so much.
They had three different holes; that’s fancy. 😂 Idk why but this tickled me bc when I think of outhouses, I’m like, why would you need three different holes to do your business in; it’s all waste from the bodies so it shouldn’t have mattered that much, right? But I guess he was the president, so nothing but the best for him.
When you say that you “met him”, can you explain what that means?
I will never forget seeing that blood soaked pillow in the building across the street from the Ford Theatre where they carried Lincoln.
Such a beautiful home, thakyou Lincoln a brave , kind hearted man.😊
When I was a child my parents brought me to see President Lincoln's home.
Also we went on a train ride that had an actor that played Lincoln.
I was small & he was so tall & the top hat made him look taller.
He sat down with us & would tell us tails & it was really like meeting the real person, especially when you're a little 'kid'
I sat on his lap & got to hold his gold pocket watch as my parents looked on & he told such interesting stories.
Our time with him was brief because there were other's on the train but I have NEVER forgotten that experience. I wish I could thank him in person as an adult.
I have a large collection of books on President Lincoln & the Civil War.
I'm hopeful that if the man, the actor might see this humble comment -- that it makes him smile.
Thank you sir for letting 'US' go on this tour to see Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln's home , that unfortunately President & family-- never got to live there long & of the loss of their dear children.
On slavery -- President Lincoln said ; " If you want slavery FIRST be a slave. "
Treat ALL FOLKS the way 'YOU' want to be treated -- is my take away from that.

It's so sad the best presidents and people get assinated. Lincoln was one of the GOAT and he's even carved into a mountain. What an amazing tribute to one of the greatest Americans. Very nice video.
I personally do not believe he was a great President at all. But, I can respect what he went through.
Didn’t he own slaves?
I live in Springfield. I ride a bike to and from work every day through this area. The homes are beautiful and the park Rangers do an amazing job.
All preserved so well... I wish I could visit his home & his grave. He is one of my fav American President....
First time i ever pictured in my mind Abraham Lincoln sitting in an out house.
You would think the out house would be insulated. So in winter you could carry a hurricane lantern with you for light & heat. Imagine having diarrhea in winter when it's -5F
Greetings from India. Thanks for showing the home of Abe Lincoln. Read a lot about him in my childhood.
Ironically he created the Secret Service yet they failed to protect him. This was awesome. Thanks! Like many I’m a great admirer of Lincoln.
The original role of the Secret Service was to deal with counterfeit money. It was after his death that they were tasked with protecting the president.
They failed to protect him because 1) Lincoln established it literally just a few hours before he was shot, 2) when they were established it was just to fight counterfeiting. The idea of the Secret Service protecting the President didn’t happen until 1901.
At the time, the Secret Service was primarily responsible for counterfeit currency and did not protect the president. He had bodyguards for that who obviously failed miserably!
I didn’t know that .thanks 😂😂😂😂
When we last visited Lincoln’s home, it was a wonderful experience. My daughter uses a wheel chair & as soon as a park guide saw her he personally lead us to the back yard. The back porch lowered to ground level & we both got on & then it raised & we basically took the tour backwards & it was wonderful. We could not go upstairs but we saw everything on the first floor & did not feel like we missed anything. It was really great.
LOVE IT

I just learned A.Lincolns son Roberts summer home is here in Machester, Vermont. Robert Lincoln also passed away there.

Love Abraham Lincoln and read every book I can on him❤
I grew up in Litchfield, Illinois, which is the half way point on I55 between Springfield, IL and St. Louis, Mo. I have been there many times. I am amazed each time I'm there. The out house is interesting. I asked the guide why the seats weren't just flat as most I had seen. He said it was because women had long dresses and had hoops. That way the dresses would fit over them and not interfere with their pretty dresses. I thought that was very interesting!
Also, the Kitchen was much larger originally, but Mary had wanted a separate dining area. So, she had half of the kitchen made into a dining area.
I have always wanted to tour this home. Watching you walk across that parking lot, though, makes me sick for all of the history that was destroyed to make a place for cars to sit.
Very nice video thanks 4 sharing
Thank you for making these videos for people like me they can't get there cuz I've been born in a wheelchair and it ain't handicapped accessible the way I see it in the video so thanks for making the video and thanks for taking time out to make the video God bless you and I stay in the house so it is blessing to see on Roku that is my TV please it shows UA-cam thank you for making the video keep making a video please for people like me that don't get out no more because I'm in a wheelchair God bless you for taking time out to make the videos 🇺🇸

Wow that house is eerily beautiful 😮❤
It's extremely cool in this place too. I would love to go take another tour TOO
When I was a kid of 10 years old, 65 years ago there was a canopy bed in one of the bedrooms. I fell in love with it! 2 years ago when I visited again there was No Canopy bed! I asked the tour guide about that and I was told they switched furniture out to suite the house. A lot of the furniture DID NOT belong to the Lincolns’ !! I was so disappointed.
Yes, it would have had bed curtains too
I also visited as a kid when I would go see my grandmother in the late 60s, and yes, much of it has changed
thanks for sharing it
We live close by and never get tired of going there and spending the day! New Salem is really fun as well!
I tend to go every few years. Always worth the trip!
I found out my Potter relative helped found New Salem. He came from Massachusetts!
I was there almost 45 years ago. It cerntainly has changed. My Mother was fascinated by the outhouse and how small the house seemed for such a big man.

Why do you say that?
Name me 'stuff' that the current Prez & 'vp' has done for America? Opened borders so they can cheat by letting them vote-- crime-- deaths-- Fentanyl -- their actions will bankruptcy America -- higher prices for food & everything-- the latest Harris wants to do is distory businesses & distory our food supply. Look at the garbage that's put in our food now-- read the fine print.
Lincoln wouldn't want to see the folks now in the Whitehouse doing their best to distory America .
Please watch some Fox news -- and learn what is really going on

His hat style was called a stovepipe hat. It was very popular at the time.
Memories....I've been in this nostalgic house many years ago touring.😊
165 or more years of history amazing
Ive been there. Peer through the windows and it felt so nostalgic.
Lincoln’s home was completely renovated several years ago, but the original structure is still intact. So, most of what you see, such as the siding, walls, doors, and woodwork is indeed original.
It was a great tour. Our guide was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the house. One tip: Unless you love kids you might want to not visit during the end of the school year because of all the junior high trips. Well organized but a bit crowded nonetheless
Loved the house and the tour guide!😄❤

I’ve been there! I’m from Decatur. It is one city over from Springfield. Proud to be from the Land of Lincoln. I’ve stayed in that tall, round hotel… it’s The Hilton. It was amazing in the 90s.
Abraham Lincoln had been to my hometown a couple times. He even gave a speech in the downtown area. I’ve stood in that location many times. I don’t live in Illinois anymore but it’s a good feeling to have lived where Lincoln did.
A WWII navy seaman used to tell me many times about Lincoln visiting the family in Missouri . The seaman showed me a photo of the couch that Lincoln sat on.

It is sad he didn’t go back even to visit.
My parents brought me to see Lincoln's home in 1962. The area does appear to have changed. The Lincoln home was surrounded by old homes. The neighborhood was decaying due to age & lack of upkeep. I believe the backyard had a picket fence.
The sidewalk in front of the house was old concrete and much narrower than the current brick paver construction. The house color remains the same as I recall seeing.
I’d like to see it in its old decaying state , it gives it more character, makes it feel more authentic
We also went to Springfield for our 8th grade trip here in Chicago.
We made the 200 mile trip in 8 Greyhound buses to visit the old and current Capitals, Lincoln's home, and of course his tomb.
We also went to the Chicago History Museum where they had his death bed, life mask, stove top hat, items he had in his pockets the night he was shot, and at the time, the chair he was sitting in at Ford's Theater on that night.
Very humbling experiences both.
