- Come along with us on a guided, historic home tour of one of the south's most exquisite Renaissance Revival homes. You'll be transported back in time in this 18,000-square-foot mansion spanning four levels and crowned by a two-story cupola.
Commissioned by imaginative owners and constructed by the most skillful workers of the time, its technological amenities were unsurpassed in the mid-19th century. When constructed, the now historic house had hot and cold running water, central heat, gas lighting, a speaker-tube system, in-house kitchen, and an elaborate ventilation system. There really aren’t any words for a home like this. I kept thinking how in the world can you go on a 3+ year honeymoon and purchase things for a home of that size? Who thought of curved pocket doors, the hidden linen closet with an urn to disguise it? It really is an overwhelming example of architecture, craftsmanship, details, and just plain beauty!
IKR. I love pocket doors but never saw curved ones before.
Thank you because I was thinking the same thing.
Exactly! So many architectural cleverness in a private home... It's wonderful!
@@juniort.thecolorten2207 wrong- the doors are actually curved. Did you watch the video? They are barrel curved, not arched.

Beautiful restoration and the upkeep must be a labor of love.
What is 29:00?
Remember begging my Grandfather to take me to the Hay House. He would drive us up the circular front drive where I would bound out of the car and run up those front steps. I would take the huge door knocker into my little hand. The smile on the face of Chester Davis, the Hay Family butler, was like no other. I would present him with an apple, fresh picked flowers. She would allow me to wonder and dream as a little girl in the 1960’s. Thank you for this memory lane journey. The house looks amazing and loved again!
What an amazing memory!
Thank you so much for allowing us to share in your beautiful memories of this home.
The fact that the kids wanted their parents room to stay the same ❤️
This house is like a decadent dessert...almost too much to take in at once. Thanks for introducing it to all of us!
continual overwhelm
This exquisite mansion just screams I'm not just rich, I'm filthy rich!!Wow!!!
Absolutely beautiful historical home.We are so fortunate to have these beautiful homes saved and restored. Nothing built today can compare. Thank you for this wonderful video !
As a child of 12 years old my Catholic school brought us on a tour of this wonderful home. And when I got older I bought a Eastlake dining room table and chairs. Because I thought the dining room was the most magnificent room I ever saw. I’ve never forgot this house and what a treasure it is to see it again thank you for the lovely video.🥰
imagine the time it took to remove the coal and cigar smoke out of all that very detailed and intricate work
This video reminded me of the show, "America's Castles," that used to be on A&E several years ago. It's fascinating to see the artistry and craftsmanship that went into this house, especially because they didn't have all of the power tools that we have today. I'm always blown away by the scale of these historic homes. Thank you for the tour - very interesting!
I loved that show
Loved that show.
I miss that show SO MUCH!
THIS IS MY HOMETOWN!❤️I had wedding pictures made on the Hay house steps and my children have had prom pictures taken on the front entrance as well! I have many tours and memories of this incredible mansion! You put together a wonderful video that I am so thankful to be able to share!🥰
I wish that I could tour it, but I can’t climb stairs anymore! It’s wonderful that your family has special memories there.
Wow that is so special!!
I appreciate that the house guide did not talk nonstop, rather he allowed us to visually savor the Beautiful home!
That’s thanks to our incredible editor who took 1.5 hours of dialogue and cut it to 40 minutes!
What a housekeeper nightmare.
Such elegant detail, simply amazing.
Crazy you say that because my mom was a housekeeper there back in the 80s and early 90's. She used to tell me and my sisters about her experience working there all the time. She loved working there. At the time we were young and didn't know about the history of that house and really couldn't appreciate her excitement of working there. Now that i'm 43 I wish I'd gone there with her on the tours.
The pocket doors! And two sets curved!! Laine must have been beside herself! Oh, the stained glass is so lovely. And the curved pocket shutters are fascinating. Such gorgeous design throughout the house. Natural light, airflow, so many things no longer so carefully planned for when houses are built today. Thank you for letting us join you on this tour. 🙏❤️
The house feels alive. Warm and welcoming and so proud of herself!
I'm still on the entryway and it's stunning! What an incredible piece of history!
Toured this house last year an it took my breath away! So glad you were able to visit. This video captured so much of the amazing detail that makes this house a treasure. Another fantastic video by Kevin and Laine! Thank you!!
The Hay House is my favorite historical home. We toured it 30 years ago, (and bought the booklet to remember it by,) and so much progress in its restoration has occurred. Thank you for the gift of this video! Now we can enjoy its beauty untill we can visit in person once again.
The opulence is overwhelming within this beautiful home. As always, I greatly appreciate the preservation aspect and incorporating the three families is generously key to this house. As I navigate more toward the Helena and Pearl houses, one can not help but respect the upper echelons of homes.
Thank you so much! I was a docent there on the late 1980's. The progress since then has been amazing. It's a mansion but understandable how a family could live there. The view from the cupola is wonderful. I love Macon so much that one of my children is named Macon.. :) Thank you for sharing the Hay House
2:37 in and I am swooning over that watch, how elegant and beautiful
Really really really good job y'all- the subject matter is of course stunning but your production values have gone through the roof! So so proud of the work you're doing! It must be said I've always felt that had Longwood in Natchez been finished the interiors would have felt similar in finish- arched openings, marble floors, gilt everywhere, etc. Charming fellow as well-
This home is made from art and craftsmanship. I'm in awe of all the thought, time and of course the money needed to get this close to perfection.
Such opulence, such beauty. I wouldn't want to clean it though. If walls could only talk.
The nanny's room is so pretty. It would make a lovely sewing room too with all of that light.
Absolutely loved this tour. Amazed at the curved pocket doors and windows shutters. What a feat of workmanship! Can you imagine what that would cost now a day IF you could even find an artist/carpenter to be able to make those doors & shutters. What an amazing home.
Brent Hull?
Those pocket doors are to die for. I love pocket doors lol
Some of these homes look far above and beyond the horse and buggy technology of the day...beginning to think previous generations were much more advanced then we were originally told. The arched windows and doorways plus the cupola are spectacular, and an architectural feat alone
Agree. Look at the videos by Jon Levi where he shows evidence of a hidden (covered up) past - the Tartarian builders who built most of the amazing buildings around the world. It's eye opening.
We have only devolved.
Wowza! That is one solid looking house! The Italianate style is so classicly beautiful. It's so well cared for..looks brand spankin' new.
This is my favorite tour! Not just that it is breathtaking workmanship, but because my maternal grands, great grands, and theirs before them were from Macon. It gives me chills to imagine what it was like back then and wondering if they attended an event there or what they had thought of this gorgeous home. Thank you!
Wow, hot and cold water in the 1800’s. Just to have running water is amazing. 😮beautiful home.
WOW WOW WOW! Cannot wait to get my butt back to the states so I can go ‘splorin! Loads of love from Glasgow Scotland 🏴 ❤️ xxx
Oh, my….incredible…..this is more elegant than our currant White House. Imagine the wealth it took to construct such a home….
You all have shown some very beautiful ones, but I got to say this one is the most stunning !
Just absolutely stunning. My heart beat a little faster when I spied the ladies in the ceiling plaster work.
The beauty and the feeling of the love that went into building that place is so evident it practically radiates from the screen.
Great tour, I took 100 screenshots to add to my Victorian house album, I have over 25,000 photos on my iPad. I love that circular staircase that goes up to the cupola and the house is just fantastic, the plaster work is impeccable
Do you have photos of the victorian homes you saved to your iPad on your channel ?would love to see them I love older homes and photos.I bet others would love to them also.have good day.😉
I took a lot of screenshots, too - which will go on my Pinterest Victorian architecture, millwork, and other applicable room boards.
Just incredible! It’s sad when we lose these bits of marvel and history. I’m so happy they have preserved this gem.
The Hay house is absolutely stunning! How wonderful that it was donated with its furnishings to the Georgia Trust.
Awesome preserved historic building … amazed that is wasn’t turned into apartments … so sad that so many historical homes were renovated for multi family use.
The first thing I look at in an antique home is the woodwork. So many of these treasures ended up defiled by someone who was obsessed with white paint. I'm happy to see this house kept some of woodwork pristine. I did some research to see why so many antique homes with extensively decorated woodwork ended up whitewashed & found that realtors are telling sellers that they must paint all wood in the home white or it won't get a high price! Seriously? It breaks my heart.
This home is gorgeous! Thx for telling us about it.
This is the manor of dreams! Just stunning in its sheer grandiose design and so much detail.
What a magnificent home! To think that it was built without power tools, bulldozers, excavators, cranes, or any other modern equipment. The view from the cupola is awesome, but I can only imagine how much more beautiful it must have been when the house was first built. There were no modern buildings or paved roads. No cars, no utility poles. It is great to see the house still stands, but also sad to see the landscape around it swallowed up with modern clutter.
I grew up in Macon and always loved this house! Thank you for featuring this gem!
Thank you for your efforts to bring us all such an incredible tour! I'm thrilled by the sheer number of arched pocket doors with etched glass inserts; I can imagine the whole place full for a Ball. And how fortunate so much of the original faux painting could be restored. That's what we're all about, right? The 'downstairs' kitchen tables reflect the number of staff needed to keep such a place clean, and running properly. I hope the displays include their stories too. The mind boggles at the thought of dusting all of the roses and cherubs on the moldings (such an inadequate word for those beauties). Thank you Kevin for a great job filming, complete with drone views. Hope Laine is feeling better soon. :)
Absolutely breath taking. Really love this fabulous home. Thank you for sharing. I also wish to make a special note of praise for the tour guide. His informative comments added much to this special presentation. Hats off to the Trust and all others responsible for this wonderful restoration. Enjoying and watching from PA.
To call this a house is a gross understatement; it's a masterpiece of architecture and artisty at the highest level. Stunning! Beats anything I've seen anywhere else, Europe--lots of what I've seen is ostentatious/pretentious, but this has real class.
Best video on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing this. My wife just about fell off the couch and was in shock at the features. This was a travel back in time.
Wow! Thank you!!
Thank you! This was so interesting to watch. Loved learning of all the restoration efforts of this home and how they staged it in different rooms to show how each family would have had it. ❤️😊
This is incredible! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I am from Georgia not very far from Macon and had never heard of this gorgeous home. Now that my family has moved back home, I can’t wait to make the short drive to see it myself! Please keep these beautiful home tours coming. I love learning so much from the things you share!
Thank you for taking us on this tour. I am in awe of the craftsmanship involved to create this jewel! I’m very impressed with the care the foundation is exercising to preserve, conserve and restore it.🌸
What an absolutely gorgeous house! So much to love, but the curved pocket doors are amazing! Thank You for sharing this with us.
This was a delightful home to see, most opulent. I am so glad it has been restored, our homes are our history and so many have gone to ruin. Thanks for your channel, maybe it will inspire us all to respect and save our homes for future generations to enjoy.
Im leaving this comment as I log on to watch AGAIN!
Here we go again. Every time I think alright this house is my favorite you show another one that's even better. This one is my favorite. For now. 😉
My mind is BLOWN. I live less that two hours from the house. I knew of it; but have never been inside. I had to stop the video half-way through to rest my brain. Good Lord! Thank you for this magnificent tour!
The filming was spot on. I was transported in another time and my imagination ran wild. Thank you 😊.
Just have to say again, i love this video!!!. Have it saved in my favorites. Great to watch it again!. And, fantastic music choice!. So evocative!. Such great craftsmanship and artistry!!. No Vanderbilt dwelling will EVER compete with this time period!!.
Macon is my home town and the grandson of Mr. P. L. Hay and I attended grammar school together in the 1940s at old Alexander 3 school across the Ocmulgee. When we were studying architecture in the 7th grade, his grandfather invited the entire class to visit The Hay House one day to view the interior with all its architectural treasures.
Over the years I have taken many out of town visitors to tour The Hay House.
It's an architectural gem and Macon is so fortunate that The Georgia Trust had the foresight to become the keepers of this beautiful and unique treasure.
That has GOT to be the finest home you have featured thus far!
Thank you for the tour of this beautiful home, I hope to visit it this month!!! I love the trompe l’oeil walls, one of the many things that I love!
What a fantastic tour, thank you so much for bringing this to us.
The grand scale and superb finish (wood and plasterwork) of this home is unbelievable. The window workings alone are so thoughtfully & beautifully engineered. This level of architecture is rare so we are blessed it still stands today to remind us of what is possible and honor the high standards achieved in the past! Inspirational
Thank you for sharing this house tour: what a breathtakingly beautiful work of art. This is definitely one of “America’s Castles”.
I love your channel. As a lover of American history it feeds my soul. Thank you so much for caring for these properties like I am not able. Much respect!
I live just outside of Macon and I have never been on a tour of the historical houses in Macon....This house is amazing but I like to see the entrance of the house from the front doors. There has always been rumors of a tunnel from the house of this era that go to the river where they used them for rum running... Thank you for the awesome tour.
That house was so nice. He was the top of the line tour guide
so stunning!!! Thank you for sharing friend :)
That was awesome!! I so enjoy these historical videos and amazing homes! Incredible architecture and design! Thank you for sharing with us!
Possibly the most beautiful house I've ever seen
The Entry really commands attention, even though it has a masculine feel its very inviting Love the front doors!!!
I love the sinks in the bedroom
I really enjoyed learning about his beautiful house. Mr. Willis is an excellent tour guide. Thank you for sharing!
I am rarely left speechless when it comes to giving my 2 cents in terms of design and architectural features. This time I haven't got a single critique. This mansion is splendid and marvellous. Not a single thing I would change, everything is massive, gorgeous, luxurious and fit to be preserved as an architectural masterpiece. I love the colours, furniture, covings, mouldings, I LOVE everything about this house. Just grand and spectacular!
Fabulous tour of a magnificent house from the Italianate era. Thanks for posting!
Magical and transformative - gratitude to all who labored and loved in this house 😊
Those ceiling medallions and plaster moldings!! And the painting on walls and ceilings! ❤️❤️❤️
I can’t imagine being able to call a place like this home. Breathtaking!!
I am stunned by the trompe-l'oeil work. This artist was genius. I hope he was paid well. Sublime.
Absolutely beautiful house. Excellent tour. The marbling is superb and the staircases throughout are exquisite. Those arched doors and the stained glass, too lovely for words.
Wow
AHHMAZING!!
Curved pocket doors 😍
That dining room made my heart skip a beat!
WOW - what an amazing home. The artistry that went into the house, again is another Wow. The beautiful furniture, paintings & the statue of Helen! Thanks for taking us along for the tour.
I had the pleasure of touring this beautiful home many years ago. We were able to stand in wind tunnel. Such a wonderful invention. This home is beyond beautiful. Thank you.
From top to bottom, glorious house!
My mouth hung open through the entire tour. Never have I seen such a stunningly fabulous antebellum home. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I would love to stand in this beautiful house.
Wow! Exquisite is not a word that comes in to my vocabulary typically....but this is EXQUISITE!!! The amount of care taken to properly take care of this is amazing. Thank you!!
STUNNING!!
Beautiful! The terminology "Renaissance revival" is funny to me, as Renaissance itself was a revival of ancient Greek architecture so at this point it could be considered the phoenix bird of architecture styles
~Positively gorgeous! Thanks guys for this thrilling tour! ♥️🤗♥️
Laine and Kevin, thank you for this extraordinary special. I’ve listen to it twice and this time I thought of you walking through this house and seeing things and how they were restored and not renovated. This was an incredible afternoon for me that I am eternally grateful for. I may never get to see the Hayhouse but I took a tour of the house
Gorgeous home. So glad it’s been renovated to it’s past life.
Wow! It must have been magnificent to live and experience this beautiful home.
Thanks for sharing, friend✨
Italian renascence has always been my favorite. Every thing is exquisite. The colors used are so comforting. This is probably the prettiest historic home I have toured on utube
You should be very very very proud of this one...
Truly an original and historic home...unusual and innovative for a surviving Antebellum structure. Thesewent is eloquent, knowledge table and very likeable. A very enjoyable and informative story about a fascinating slice of Americana. Thank you so much for sharing!
I have been visiting this home since 1979…it is glorious!
I visited on a hot July day of 2020. I was so glad to be on the road again after those early months of the pandemic. I arrived out of breath and was the only visitor on the scheduled tour. I had a small visitor, Darin, with me and was allowed to bring him throughout the house in his stroller. I took many photos of him throughout the house that I still cherish. Thank you for the tour and for those memories. I took an instant liking to Macon.
Can you imagine having that kind of wealth during that time period ….Absolutely Beautiful
Absolutly amazing and so well done !
Craftsmanship is so masterfully executed and designed. Height of grandeur and decadence.
What a great tour! Thank you..to date, this is by far the most incredible home I've seen.
Gorgeous! Thank You For Making This Video! Magnificent!!
This is breathtaking. Such craftsmanship could never be duplicated today.
